Hubbell Hinkhouse is the best! He has successfully assisted my wife and me numerous times at the Oak Brook Library (we are residents) with respect to issues regarding our computer and iPhones. Hubbell is always pleasant, patient, and knowledgeable. I am amazed at the breadth and depth of his expertise and experience. Shhhh.... I love little libraries like this. Grand windows flank the building which makes reading a book with a view of a golf course quite gratifying. Lot parking available. They could use some lounge or reclining chairs. read more

The librarians here are the best! Love their audiobooks too. I am baffled by some of the reviews- everyone is so nice here! There are study rooms in the back if you need quiet space. I took several tests after studying here back in the day. This a great space for kids with great programming. I love my local library. read more

A small but charming little library. They are located in a nice quiet area and have plenty of spaces where you can study. Definitely not as busy as other libraries in the area, but I do appreciate these smaller and quieter libraries very much when I need them. I like that they a perpetual book/CD/DVD sales nook where you can purchase a few items that are being weeded from their collections. The one thing that doesn't seem to fit in with the library is the awkward collection of Lladros in front of the bathrooms. They are gorgeous but I'm not sure whey they're in front of a bathroom area in a corner and what they have to do with the library. I'd love to see some of the spaces revitalized for more effective patron use. read more

DUDE, I love my local library. Quiet, relaxing setting. It feels like a library not like a huge building where books are everywhere, but you don't know where to start looking for the one that you want. Free museum passes (certain ones like the Brookfield Zoo), baby story reading time every Tuesday, self check out (just books though, not dvd's), free internet, printing (10 cents a page) What more can you ask for? It may be small, but they can pretty much get whatever book you want since they are part of a whole network of libraries around the area. YAY, hope the internet, kindles and nooks doesn't kill libraries off completely, it would be so sad. read more

This library is ridiculous. I was told my Oakbrook property taxes is unincorporated and doesn't pay for them. So I have to pay over $100 a year for a library card. Who makes these petty decisions. I just wanted a local card to go to other libraries. I wouldn't waste my time here. read more

Worst Library I have ever been to in my life. Not a place of learning and study. I was using one of the library's computer monitor to use a a second monitor to study. A Mr. Ejez Khan walked up to me shaking his head like a disapproving father stated You cant do that! I ask him Excuse me sir but who are you? He said i am part of the library staff and I then informed him that i was given permission by library staff that I could use the monitor. He asked me who gave me permission and I said I dont need to give you that information. He then brings the library director Sue Madorin who asked me the same question and I pointed to the gentlemen sitting behind the desk near the computer lab. She then pushed me back off to Mr. Khan who was then introduced as the IT supervisor. He said I couldn't use the monitor for that purpose so I got up and left. The director approached me again and says I dont want you to feel uncomfortable I explained to her that Mr. Khans approach was unprofessional and uncalled for and proceeded out of the library. The head of the oak brook village calls me and basically stated that no one gave me permission to use the monitor. I asked him about the way that Mr. Khan approached me and he stated that thats not what his staff told him. Its funny that he would say this because to my knowledge the only person that could hear the initial exchange between Mr. Khan and I was the gentleman who gave me permission in the first place. May I add that in the library is a cell phone free zone Mr. Khan was on his cell phone talking while in the library How did I know because he was 10 feet from me. Its good to see "staff" of the library not following rules that are posted everywhere in the library. Oak Brook is a very nice area too bad people holding public positions and work for the village are not. PS: Wifi is not good either. read more

Went to their book sale on 4/11/19 (Day 1, at 3:30 p.m.). Waste of my time. The book dealers get there when it opens and clean out the place. I've seen them cart off boxes of books on a dolly. Unless you get there when the doors open on Day 1, don't bother going. read more

This is a really great public space to get work done. I have met with others for group-study and they are always accommodating. There are plenty of tables that range from very quiet (in deeper sections of the library) to places where it is more acceptable to converse at a higher volume. Wi-fi is free, which is of course wonderful. read more

The library is nice. Some of the librarians aren't the nicest. I use to study here in between classes and some mornings before class. On Tuesday mornings a group of non-working mothers overwhelm the lobby with their weekly meeting. One time, they were on a conference call (on speaker phone) in the lobby taking up most of the tables and a guy with a crying toddler took the toddler INSIDE of the library trying not to disturb the women. Throughout the holidays they had various programs (some musical) happening in their meeting room which could clearly be heard throughout the library. Yes, small children run around yelling INSIDE of the library. This library has no respect for people that are in need of a quiet area. This place should be called a community center, NOT a library. read more

This is a decent library that usually doesn't get too full. The lobby area is nice with vending machines and lots of seating. It's hit or miss for quiet study however, since there are no quiet reading rooms. Since it's one large open space, there can be a kid yelling in the childrens area, and you'll be able to hear it on the other side. The librarians should focus as much on keeping the noise level down as they do on making sure no one's eating inside. read more

After moving to Oak Brook, and being armed with my IL Drivers License showing my 1725 35th St. Oak Brook, IL 60523 address, I went to their library to apply for a library card. There seemed to be confusion among the library staff as to whether or not I lived within the area served by their library. Puzzled, I was nevertheless rejected, despite somehow being simultaneously eligible to receive numerous unsolicited telephonic invitations to polo matches, fireworks, etc. from Oak Brook's Village President. Happily for me, Westmont's library welcomed me with open arms and friendly services. Thank you, Oak Brook Library, for rejecting me thus resulting in a far better experience with Westmont. read more

The Oak Brook Public Library is wonderful. The setting in the woods, the building itself, the collection is outstanding and the staff is professional, helpful and friendly. It is a very welcoming environment for families, business people and individuals. The staff will go out of their way to assist you and help you find whatever you may need. The programming is excellent for adults and children alike. As an avid reader, I have been a member of many libraries in my life and feel Oak Brook is by far the best. read more

If you have small children this is the library for you. Miss Jennifer does the most awesome storytimes for the children. I have been to many other libraries to view their storytimes and they pale in comparison to Miss Jennifer. She reads picture books and then has a full assortment of songs, games, and flannelboard activities that coincide with the story. She brings the books to life and shows the children that a book can take you in many directions. She makes reading fun. The children adore her and can't wait for their next storytime. It is obvious that Miss Jennifer loves her job and it shows! And finally she has the most beautiful voice. She is certainly an asset to the library and I hope that she will be here for a very long time so that all of the children can experience such a GREAT STORYTIME! read more

I'm sad to say I don't have many good things to say about the library. It's noisy, the layout is strange, and patrons feel like visitors at their stuffy old grandmother's house. There seems to be a positive correlation between age and disagreeableness at this facility. The more youthful staff members are pleasant. Some of the more senior staff members here seem to want to perpetuate the crotchety old librarian stereotype - and do so quite effectively. Read the other reviews. This isn't anything new. The collection is not stellar for a village that is pretty well off. The library really doesn't do much to make this better. The OBPL has the MAGIC system, which is really no better than the library's lame collection. MAGIC pulls from a few other equally lame libraries in the surrounding area and that's about it. Unlike most libraries, patrons cannot request books through the Interlibrary Loan system themselves. You have to ask the reference desk to put the order in, and depending on who you get, the experience can be degrading. It would be much easier for the patrons to type in their ISBN number and order the item themselves. Maybe their staff doesn't have enough to do over there so they restrict patrons from access to this page and only allow staff to put requests in. It's weird. Movies are $1 to check out, which is not the case at many other libraries. You would think Oak Brook wouldn't be $o $tingy when it boa$t$ a median annual household income of $132,389. And make sure you return that DVD on time, because it's $1 per day if it's overdue. Not the case at other libraries. Also no grace periods on overdue items. Cla$$y, Oak Brook. The website is awful. I'm pretty adept with computers and it is very hard to navigate. Their website really needs to get into the 21st century. The library hosts a used book sale every April. I have been going for years and it has always been a great place to meet up with friends in the Oak Brook area. All of this changed in the past few years when they started allowing phone scanners. The phones are used to scan ISBN numbers and see if the book is "worth anything" on the Internet. If it's worth something, people buy the books and immediately list them for profit. Since this practice started, seedy people from surrounding areas come looking for books and movies. They are extremely rude and territorial. I was once innocently looking through a box on a table with books for sale and from across the room a derelict-looking woman yelled out, "EXCUSE ME, THOSE ARE MINE." Yeesh, sorry lady. What's worse is that, unlike most libraries, the OBPL not only allows phone scanning devices but they ENCOURAGE it. For $10 you can bring a phone and be a parasitic vagrant from one of the surrounding towns taking books only because they are valuable. Most libraries restrict this practice because people become so uncouth and the community can't enjoy the book sale their tax dollars paid for. This is not a community gathering anymore. People are mean, aggressive, and horrible to be around there. What is truly the worst is that the staff seem to delight in the chaos of these events. When I complained the woman at the cash counter about the phones, she very flippantly said that was the nature of these kinds of events. No it isn't. Your library sucks. I started this review thinking I would give it two stars, but I think I have enumerated enough issues to warrant a 1 star rating. There are lots of other nice libraries in the area. Hinsdale is big and has a nice collection. My hometown library in Elmhurst has a very pleasant staff and 10 cent overdue fines on items. Their website is up to date and easy to navigate. They have tons of study space and the facility is gorgeous, bright, and clean. Also, I understand they could accept library cards from surrounding towns. Honestly, it's worth the trip to avoid the OBPL. Wheaton's library is stellar, and their book sale is amazing. They have a huge collection. Arlington Heights' library has a great book sale and they ban cell phone scanners because it makes the experience terrible for its community. Most libraries ban cell phone scanners at book sales. Oak Brook's library saw a way to make a few extra bucks at the cost of a civilized sale. Shame on them. Oak Brook's library needs some young blood, a face-lift, and a serious attitude adjustment. read more
