My rheumotologist and neurologist both suggested I try acupuncture to see if it could offer any relief. Let's be clear - being poked with long needles is not my idea of a good time. I had no idea how this treatment could be relaxing or helpful, but I'd heard so many good stories so I decided to give it a try. After asking around, several people suggested I head to the massage therapy clinic at the Algonquin College gym. What? Algonquin College has a massage therapy clinic that isn't run by students (they do have a student-run one as well, but that's for another review)? Yes, yes they do. It's tucked away underneath the massive staircase that leads up to the gym. Anyway, after making an appointment with Dar Blue (yep, that's her real name!), I anxiously awaited my appointment. Dar was friendly and calming and explained the procedure to me, making ti very clear that acupuncture doesn't work for everyone, but that is can affect some people quite dramatically. She mentioned I might feel dizzy or ill afterwards. Yeah, I was terrified. She started with a relaxation massage, and I honestly didn't even notice when she started to insert the needles. It was totally painless. I had no adverse reactions, just relaxation and a zen-like feeling (no, I'm not a hippie). Afterwards Dar helped me with a lot of stretching techniques and told me that if I felt any effects it would be within the next 24-48 hours. I felt a lot better - less pain for sure. I'd recommend giving acupuncture a try if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain, and Dar is a great place to start.

All they had time for was a 30 min massage but I would take anything I could get for some relief. My appointment was with Kaylee and she was truly wonderful. I had been for a similar massage the week before at home in Toronto, which I thought had been pretty good at the time. But comparatively, Kaylee's was far, far better. The room was nice and warm, and she had a pregnancy massage pillow ready for me. Hurrah!! I could lay on my front with my boobs and belly supported properly but not squished. It was glorious. Her touch was just right. Strong but not too strong as too be painful before I had a chance to relax. Her personality was a joy too. The 30 mins flew by and I was sad that i couldn't book another appointment with her when I left. But when I'm back visit my Mum again I will. And you should too. The front desk area of the clinic was in a bit of a mess the day I was there. It wasn't their fault though. They had recently had a car drive through their front window into the waiting area. Yep. That's right. One of those "I stepped on the gas instead of the brake" deals, and CRASH... right through the window. So there were some workers there fixing drywall and such. But I will say that I didn't notice any noise at all when I was in the massage room.

She's excellent at what she does, and offers a clean, safe, relaxing environment. Soft music, gentle lighting and a fireplace on the wall - all make for an awesome experience! It's super easy to book online - and they'll even text you a reminder the day before your appt! They're also now able to do direct billing to your insurance company - makes life easier!

I'm speaking from years of experience. Another bonus; extremely hygienic environment. There was no double dipping in the wax, everything was sanitized and Dina did the best job ever. She's a perfectionist neat-freak that's for sure. Just when I thought my visit couldn't be better; they throw in a voucher or a free manicure or relaxation massage on your next visit. Depending on the month of the year, booking a last minute treatment may be tricky, however, there is the option of submitting your name onto a waiting list. I've found though, that it's best to schedule a date in advance (and keep it) to ensure your treatment moves forward as planned. There is a cancellation policy fully laid out and explained, however, should you need to cancel your appointment. I have been to many clinics where the RMT talks my ear off and I get no relaxation whatsoever, I'm sorry, but I am not in a salon getting my hair cut, I am getting a a massage and trying to take my mind off of things...Please be quiet!
