I went during the afternoon on a Saturday, which is the best time to go for a quick service, because other times they are extremely busy. This was my first time, trying the yucky udon miso butter noodles, and it will not be my last. The noodles were so buttery and delicious and hot. You can add any kind of egg or any other toppings any kind of meat and it just increases the deliciousness of the bowl. The chicken karaage is so well seasoned and goes perfectly with all the items in the bowl. And if you don't eat chicken, the tofu karaage is just as crispy and delicious as the chicken and I do not love tofu. It was slower than I would have liked when is not as busy, but our waitress was kind and were very supportive in our food decisions. I got the robata sampler: some notable standouts were: -the triggerfish jerky: thin cut and with a hint of sweetness, the fish flavor was delicate and tasty. It reminded me a little of the dried cuttlefish I ate growing up in Hawaii, but a much more refined version - chicken meatball: this was juicy, hearty, and had great flavor. The teriyaki sauce was flavorful without being too sweet - shrimps: these were expertly grilled. They were tender inside, and had a nice hint of charcoal flavor from the grilling - pork belly: this was a great cut of meat. Busy spot but worth the wait! Our table of 4 really enjoyed the drinks, apps, and entrees. It was 8:00 pm on a Thursday and we waited ~30 mins for a table. We started with chicken karaage bites and calamari. Both had delicious dipping sauces and were nicely fried. Both apps came out very quickly and were hot. I'd give the apps a 4/5. Everyone really enjoyed the udon noodles, most of us got miso butter pan fried. This meal was super flavorful and had a lot of the miso butter! This was the first stop (and meal) after my sisters & I landed in Detroit. It was a colder day, so this meal was just absolute perfection from start to end. I came here so hungry I did not get to take a picture of my main food but it was so yummy! I've been wanting to go here and it was my friend's birthday so our server gave her the matcha brownie and I swear that was the best matcha ice cream I've ever had thus far. It was just the right amount of matcha and the color was perfect! I had the Smoked Pork Belly, Shrimp Scallion Dumplings, and Jasmine Collins. Everything was delicious and the smoked pork belly was so juicy and tender. We had dinner at Ima Izakaya and were excited to try some of the newer menu items. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space was dimly lit and relaxed, not too busy, and service was timely. Not overly warm, but efficient.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started with the ahi tuna tartare (4.5/5), which ended up being the clear standout. The tuna was fresh and nicely dressed, and the sesame rice crisps, while oversized on the plate, were actually perfect for each bite. The avocado added just enough richness to round everything out. I honestly wish we had ordered a second. I went with a couple of handrolls, and this is where things leveled off (3/5). The salmon avocado roll was fine, but the salmon was overseared and flaky instead of smooth and tender. The spicy tuna handroll was standard, though the tuna felt overly minced and a bit pasty. At $9 a handroll, I would prefer less handling and a cleaner texture. Sometimes simple is better. My wife ordered the chicken katsu curry (3.5/5). If you have had Japanese market curry rice with a fresh chicken katsu, this dish brings those elements together, but it does not elevate them beyond that. At $26, we hoped for a bit more refinement or a little twist. The portion of pickled ginger was surprisingly large and mixed into the dish more than we would have liked. It is probably best to ask for that on the side. Overall, it did not quite do it for us. We will definitely be back, but next time we will probably just stick to the classics. If you are looking for rich, well balanced, flavorful ramen this is the place for you! We got the pork tonkotsu ramen and it was phenomenal. The pork was extremely well seasoned and it was a nice juicy size. The bowl is huge so I shared it with my husband and we were both stuffed by the end of our meals We also got the edamame which was the best I've ever had. I'm not usually a big edamame fan to be honest but the seasoning on these edamame brought new life and meaning to eating it. 10/10. My father in law joined us for lunch and had the ginger tori ramen. He never had ramen before and is a little picky with his food but he ate the whole bowl. I tried some of his and it was good. If you're looking for a good intro to ramen that's a good one to start with. It tastes like an elevated top ramen from college days We also got the salmon avocado hand roll which was extremely good. In town for personal reasons, I found out that some of my work teammates were also in town and meeting up for dinner at this Ima Izakaya location. I'd heard such great things about it (and never want to pass up the opp to meet up with friends), so I kind of invited myself to join them! It was a Wednesday evening around 7pm and the place was packed! We started with some appetizers (edamame, fries, and dumplings) and all was stellar including the service. However, we needed more time before placing our entree orders and at that time, our server may have given up on us a bit due to a larger party... we had to flag someone down to take our order after a pretty long wait. Entrees were not quite as much as a hit as the apps, but they were still pretty good... we had a variety of food amongst our party of four ranging from the eggplant, a noodle dish, a ceviche, and something else. I would absolutely return and probably try the ramen next time as well as a cocktail or two... I think we just had an "off night" with service and ordered wrong too. Had heard great things about this place and it did not disappoint! I went on a Thursday around 6PM and we were able to get seated right away. The ambiance is great, very thoughtful design, and very cozy especially on the rainy day that we went. I ordered the Spicy Pork Tonkatsu Ramen and it was incredible. The broth was not too salty, just the right amount of spice, and the pork was very tender. I would highly recommend this dish and would certainly order it again! I will say the one tricky thing about this spot is parking. After circling the area, we got lucky and were able to find street parking behind the restaurant. Went here today to catch up with friends because the food is always delicious and had positive service experiences up until today. While dining on the patio, my friends and I admittedly lost track of time while catching up. However, instead of being approached with professionalism or courtesy, we were aggressively told that our table was reserved and that we had been there too long. [[HIGHLIGHT]]What made this confusing was that there were several empty two- and four-seat tables around us[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. The staff member(who we later found out was actually the General Manager) partially cleared our table, walked away, then came back to remove the remaining items. We understood we had been there for a while. What we did not understand was the rude and unnecessarily aggressive approach. As she walked away, we were speaking amongst ourselves trying to understand why the interaction felt so hostile then she turned around, came back to our table, and said, "You've been here too long, that's why." No one had spoken to us beforehand or attempted to handle the situation respectfully, so her tone and energy felt offensive and escalating. On my way out, I attempted to address the situation directly because I found her behavior unprofessional--only to learn she was the General Manager herself-Frankee Thomas. Rather than listening or de-escalating, the situation escalated further and my friends and I were asked to leave. I have never been asked to leave an establishment before and never expected that type of behavior from someone in a leadership position. Hospitality is not just about food, it's also about how people are treated. This experience left a very bad impression and honestly made me question why the interaction became so confrontational in the first place. I hope ownership takes a serious look at how guests are being spoken to and treated because no one should leave feeling disrespected after simply trying to enjoy a meal with friends. read more

Things were great until they weren't. As another reviewer, my friend, mentioned in her review we had a not so great experience with the general manager. I've been going to Ima since they opened. Me and my mom would often frequent and most recently I introduced my friend who just moved here from LA. It's quickly become one of our favorite spots but the interaction turned altercation we had with the GM was unnecessarily hostile and rude. After 2.5 hours of dining, and I do mean dining not just sitting as we had just finished our second dessert (big back activities) and drinks, we were asked to leave because they needed the table. Her delivery was a little curt and there were several tables empty but whatever. My friends were a bit put off by the interaction and one made mention of how we just ordered more food to which the GM makes a abrupt turn to come a rude reply, "You've been here 2.5 hours and we only allow people to sit for 1.5 hours. And we need the table, that's why!" If that was her attempt to answer our question, smooth things over or redeem herself, FAIL! Regardless of how she felt about OUR conversation, it was a private convo amongst ourselves that she should have never inserted herself into. She was walking away. We were not talking to her, nor were we rude or unruly. On the way out my friend approached her to let her know her approach was rude and unprofessional and that's when it really got ugly. I didn't catch the whole exchange but ultimately we were told to leave and we're not welcome all because the GM was given professional constructive criticism. My friend never once raised her voice of got hostile. I truly felt like the GM had some personal issues that she elected to take out on us. Which is never ok. All of our waitstaff were pleasant. And honestly if our being at the table was an issue, it really should have come from our waitress. I'm sure her delivery would've been much better. The GM has 0 customer service skills, 0 accountability and clearly doesn't handle criticism well. As much as I love Ima I'd really never want to come back with how embarrassingly rude and poorly we were treated. Food: Spicy Pork Ramen, Pork Belly Skewer, & Steak Skewer 10/10. Came to Detroit for a concert and happened upon this restaurant before the show! The interior was absolutely stunning inside of this place! Found myself just looking around before even getting to the host stand haha We were able to order some happy hour drinks for $5 each which was amazing! The Jasmine Collin's was incredibly refreshing! For an appetizer we tried the Spicy Tuna with Sesame Chips! The sesame chips were light and crispy and the tuna was so fresh and had a nice heat to it! Everyone seemed happy with this! For my entree I liked the Chilean Sea Bass! The miso on the fish was SO good! And the cabbage salad was a great texture difference to balance with the fish. 10/10 dish! Dessert here was the Choco-Caramel Crunch. We all took notes and loved the notes of miso and caramel mixed in with the rich chocolate mousse.. yum. I was in town for a quick trip and the evening I got in, a few coworkers and I grabbed dinner here. I had found them on Yelp a few weeks prior and made a reservation. Our group decided to share a few appetizers to get things going. We ordered the edamame, street fries, spicy cucumbers, and shrimp dumplings along with a round of drinks. I had lost my voice a few days before so I went with the hot green tea with honey. It came out in a cute tea kettle, which kept it hot and gave me a few refills. Loved that for me. After that all arrived at the table we decided to snack and catch up a bit before ordering more. The spicy cucumber and street fries were probably my favorite, but it was all tasty. After that our server disappeared. A half hour went by, and no one checked in on us. We tried grabbing the attention of other staff with a little eye contact and friendly gesture and were ignored. When someone finally made it to our table, it was a new server. Something about it being really busy. I get that, but whatever. Anyhoo, for my entree I went with the yaki butter udon with tofu. It was creamy and flavorful and the portion was huge. I would order it again especially if I was really hungry. All in all, I totally get the hype. We ordered a lot of small plates to try and most were good. We loved the edamame, it was so tasty! The corn was a bit disappointing as it was one tiny piece on a skewer. I thought it would belong on the robata grill part of the menu so a bit misleading. We both ordered ramen and they weren't bad at all. I got the ginger tori with chicken and my friend got the yuzu miso with short rib. It was very filling and satisfying. We liked the dessert also, a bit of a different take on a warm brownie Sunday with green tea ice cream instead of vanilla which was interesting. It was a bit dim inside and got crowded soon after we sat but there was always someone cleaning up our finished plates to give us more room as the next dish came out and we appreciated that. First time at this location and I was impressed. I've been to Ima in Midtown a few times but I must say that this location is a notch above. The service was very good. The hostess was very friendly and we got a table fairly quickly even though they were kind of busy. Our waitress was also very friendly and attentive checking on us often. The food was great. They are great at accommodating for vegan meals and straight up have a few on the menu. Our party had an assortment of dishes off the menu and we enjoyed them all. I can NOT believe I haven't written a review for one of my absolute favorite restaurants in the entire city of Detroit yet! Ima Izakaya, you have my heart!! It's got just about everything you love from the menus at other Ima Noodles locations, if you're craving the ramen, udon, or rice bowls, along with SO MANY MORE ITEMS! They've got a whole host of cold and hot share plates, tons of skewers from their robata grill, and so many other new and incredible entrees! I've had so many of the delectable dishes from here, so trust me when I say it's impossible to go wrong with ordering here. Also, they've got a $5 food AND drink happy hour that I strongly feel is slept on! This is easily one of the best happy hours around and y'all need to experience it already if you haven't yet! The following are the dishes I order again and again and again every time I come here! The togarashi rice chicharrones is a happy hour exclusive and completely worth it! I could eat a whole Costco-sized bag of these in one sitting, I'm not even kidding you! The umami thicc fries, blistered shishito peppers, miso sesame cucumbers (so refreshing, EVERY TIME!), the karaage fried tofu bites (yes, I prefer the tofu OVER the chicken!), ALL of the sushi hand rolls, and the sake-steamed clams (order this with a side of rice because you'll want to sop up every drop of that DELICIOUS broth)! All of these dishes I've listed here are perfect for sharing with your entire group! Generally, every time I come here, whatever party I'm in ends up sharing the vast majority of the goods anyways, Ima Izakaya is so conducive to this sharing style! The robata grill skewers are ALL so good! I'd just recommend getting the platter where you get to try a little of everything, because it definitely just depends on what protein and veggies you like. My personal favorite and what I find to be the most underrated is the fish jerky though, might sound odd but TRUST ME ON THIS and try it for yourself! I'm craving some RIGHT NOW! Finally checked out the happy hour here. Not sure it was because it was Friday, but it was super busy. So busy that you should definitely get there right at 3pm. My friend and I waited over an hour to be seated. I really liked the chicken and scallion skewer. The lamb dumplings were delicious (not part of the happy hour deal). Nate and I were lucky enough to visit an izakaya in Tokyo last May and we absolutely loved it! These casual bars serve skewers of grilled deliciousness and plenty of drinks. Ima Izakaya brought us back to that experience in the best way. There was a bit of a wait but we were soon seated in the enclosed patio (which was super warm even though it was the end of December) and we got to work reviewing the menu (even though I obviously looked at it multiple times before we got there, #iykyk). We decided on the skewer platter, which came with one of each of their skewers, fish jerky, and some dipping sauces. We also got a couple hand rolls (spicy tuna and yellowtail). The food was so delicious! I loved all the skewers but I think the mushroom and asparagus was my favorite. I will say that the fish jerky wasn't my favorite, but the recommendation of dipping it in the aioli did make it more palatable for me. I loved the hand rolls - the tuna was definitely my favorite, but both were very well done and so tasty. Service was great and I had so much fun being transported back to Tokyo (well, as close as I've gotten since we got back to the US). I even got a Suntory whisky highball, which are everywhere in Tokyo. I would definitely go back for their happy hour especially (with $5 drinks and small plates). Ima Izakaya gave me the most delicious ramen experience I have ever had. I am from New Mexico and don't get the 20 degree weather we were experiencing that morning, so when our server Jason brought us our meal the amazingly flavorful broth of my tonkotsu ramen warmed me down to my very soul. The broth was a perfect balance of salt and umami with a good hint of spice, the bork belly was well glazed and fatty, but not tough. There was plenty of green onions and seaweed to keep the dish fresh and alive, and the noodles cooked perfectly. Jason was wonderful as well always making sure we were taken care of and was pleasant without being over bearing. There was a family two tables down who left saying "nothing here looks good, I think we are going to go somewhere else" and I truly feel bad that they could not experience the same thing I did. This place is good! The tonkotsu ramen is edible, but the broth is plain. However, the edamame, hand rolls, Kalbi short rib skewer were delicious. I would absolutely return to try the udon noodles and other dishes. read more

We've been to Ima Izakaya a few times now for dinner and for happy hour, and happy hour wins every time. The food is just as good, but the value makes it one of the best deals in Corktown. Definitely go early though because it fills up fast. The vibe is cozy and laid back, the service is always kind, and everything we've ordered has been full of flavor. The spicy tori ramen has that perfect slow build of heat, and the kimchi udon is a solid pick too. It's become one of our go-to spots in the city when we want something casual but really good. read more

Fun little Asian cuisine spot built within a strip along Corktown. Indoor seating and covered patio seating. Smaller seating arrangements. Extensive food menu. Maybe they were understaffed but a very slow service but quick food runners. Good for a small dinner with friends or a date/double date. read more

I've been here multiple times, usually without a reservation, but I recommend making one because it's very hit or miss. I've walked in with no wait before and other times waited up to 30 minutes. it's popular for a reason. Their happy hour menu is amazing. Everything is $5, includes drinks! They also have a mocktail selection. I got the salmon roe rice bowl and it was super flavorful and very filling. The tofu karaage was on the spicier side but still really good. I tried the ube coconut jasmine tea mocktail and it was very sweet. The hand rolls are a must. Any of them, all of them. Don't skip those. I didn't get the kabobs this time but I'm definitely saving them for next time. My friends loved the fries, just note they do have a bit of a spicy kick. The cucumbers were refreshing and creamy, and the chicken karaage was also really yummy. The workers are so friendly and laidback. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior vibe is very unique. Friends suggested and booked a table on the patio for 5:30p on a Wednesday ahead of a show at Fisher Theater. The patio is nicely closed up and well heated. I was surprised how comfortable it was in there. Joe greeted us immediately and took our drink order. We had about 25 mins before the end of Happy Hour. Drinks were delivered and time to order food. I ordered from the HH menu - skewers, wasabi-octopus, and a spicy tuna hand roll. I wouldn't do the octopus again, I didn't realize it was raw. Good flavor though. I didn't dig the texture. The spicy tuna hand roll was weak but filling. No veggies just a bit of tuna on rice. My friends loved their bowls. Nice hunk of short rib, on top of creamy, thick noodles. Along with fried garlic, kimchi, lime and veggies. The pho was huge with delicate rice noodles full of fresh jalapeño, sprouts, pork belly and lime. Service was great. We were looking for him and he wasn't hounding us. Perfect amount of attention and he didn't skip the details. Brought me a drink I wanted without further prompting. Great visit. I would recommend to others. This block is trying to come alive. Hopefully the parking situation gets better. I think there is a neighboring lot for the local businesses but it is not clear if it costs or is open or what one has to do to park there and not have someone try to tow your vehicle. Street parking is choice but that too is unclear. What is with the frickin lines?! Can we park there or not? Didn't get towed and paid my parking. Guess it was ok though very frustrating. read more

I was in the mood for Ramen, so my cousin and I decided to try this place out. I ordered the wasabi octopus as an appetizer along with the shrimp and scallion dumplings and a big bowl of the tongue Katsu Ramen as my main the octopus had a great wasabi flavor, but was cut into tiny bites that looked more like calamari than octopus. It was extremely chewy so I was only able to eat one or two bites before having to push it aside. The shrimp and scallion dumplings were good. I ordered the Hamachi Crudo and it was oddly cut very thick and had little to no flavor. It was another appetizer that went uneaten. The Tonkotsu Ramen was extremely milky. It is usually the flavor I go to at every Ramen spot, but this one tasted more like it had cream or milk added to it as opposed to a nice pork broth. It was a little offputting for me all in all the service was nice and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the vibes in the restaurant are cute[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] but the items we chose were all a no for me. read more
