A friend recommended Bash to us, so we decided to come try it for ourselves. The restaurant is cute and has a nice atmosphere. The menu is accessed through a QR code on the table, which I'm personally not a huge fan of since I try to stay off my phone while dining. That said, the menu is extensive with plenty of variety, so there really is something for everyone. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Everything tasted fresh and high quality. We ordered the Gyoza, California Roll, Ruby Roll, Tekka Don, and Miso Soup. Everything was good, but the Tekka Don was definitely my favorite, and the Miso Soup was delicious as well. The drinks were probably the biggest disappointment. The beer was overpriced, especially considering the serving sizes and compared to what we've paid for many of the same beers at other restaurants, where they're often available on draft as well. The wine selection could also use some major improvement. Most of the options leaned toward the sweeter side, and the quality just didn't seem to match the quality of the food. Since I couldn't find a wine I wanted, I ordered the Lychee Martini instead. It was okay, but definitely not worth the price, and I wouldn't have ordered a second pretty sweet. The wine and cocktails are priced similarly to what you'd expect to pay for higher-end drinks, but unfortunately, the quality just isn't there. These felt more like $7 drinks being sold at premium prices. Even the presentation of my martini was a little strange--it was garnished with two loose flower petals rather than a full flower, which looked more odd than intentional. Unfortunately, the drink selection would probably be the biggest reason we'd choose carryout or another restaurant next time. When I go out for dinner, having a really good glass of wine or a well-made cocktail is part of the experience for me, especially when the drinks are priced at a premium. Service was friendly, and our server was helpful and knowledgeable, but unfortunately it was slow. It took a while to get drinks, additional soy sauce, or have someone check back with us, and we had to flag our server down several times. To be fair, they definitely weren't standing around doing nothing. Bash seemed to have a steady stream of carryout orders, and our server spent much of our visit packing those orders. We actually felt bad for how slammed they were compared to the rest of the servers. It seems like they either need a dedicated person handling carryout or additional staff so the dine in service doesn't suffer when takeout is busy. Overall, the food was excellent and absolutely worth returning for. With some improvements to the drink selection and staffing, the dine in experience could be just as good as the food. read more

Group of 6 for some birthday celebrations. The waiter notified the manager and the complimentary drinks were on. Staff really works hard and the service is top notch. The food is incredible and the menu is pretty expansive. They do appetizers, sushi, main entrees and desserts. It is a small establishment on Trumbull but residential street parking is abundant. Be aware that for parties of 6 or more a 20% gratuity is added. We weren't aware of this until after we left. But the service was worth the extra large tip we left. We talked with many other patrons that frequent this place and they love it. The place was packed pretty quickly so a reservation is necessary. Our server JT was phenomenal and the Manager Jack even spent some time with us. You must eat here. It is an experience. Came here on a cold, snowy day when I was craving ramen or udon. I came with a group of friends and liked how the space is split. Half of it is a more traditional setup where you take off your shoes and sit in a wooden area, and the other half is regular tables and chairs. They are a popular sushi spot, but I went with the udon instead and it absolutely hit the spot. So warm, comforting, and exactly what I needed. One of my friends got the ramen and literally licked the bowl clean. Bash Original Izakaya used to be one of my favorite spots, so it's always nice to return, but this visit didn't quite hit the same high notes as before. We had the takoyaki, spicy tofu bites, avocado salad, tuna tartare, and a few sushi rolls. The takoyaki used to be much fluffier, lighter and evenly cooked inside when the restaurant first opened. This time, the batter felt undercooked in the center, and the sauce was a bit too heavy, overpowering the octopus, which was too chewy. The spicy tofu replaced my all time favorite agedashi tofu; it was light, airy, and delicately crisped in a subtle broth that let the tofu shine. The new spicy version comes with a thick batter and a bold sauce that overwhelmed and masked tofu's natural flavor. Really hoping they consider bringing the original back. The tuna tartare had potential - served on crispy fried wontons with avocado - but it could have used a splash of citrus or acid to brighten up the richness given how fatty the tuna, spicy mayo, and avocado are. The rolls were standard fare, nothing particularly memorable, but still enjoyable. The avocado salad was fresh and nicely plated, but nothing to call home about. On the service side, things were noticeably slow though. It wasn't overly busy, but we didn't get any refills and had three different people involved just to process our check. Didn't seem understaffed, just a bit disorganized or inattentive. Not a dealbreaker, but something to keep in mind for busier evenings. My coworkers and I go to lunch together once a quarter for our team celebration. In October we chose Bash Original Izakaya, a casual Japanese eatery. The restaurant is located in the Woodbridge neighborhood adjacent to Midtown Detroit across the street from Wayne State University's football stadium. We opted for traditional seating, however, standard tables are available. The aesthetic is warm, and very much on theme. The menu seems small upon reading, but there is actually lots to choose from including a variety of sushi, ramen, platters of foods for sharing, Chicken Katsu, pork and beef Bento boxes. Appetizers included edamame, crispy wings, takoyaki, and more. I enjoyed the Pork Gyoza (fried pork dumplings) and a Bulgogi (steak) Bento Box. The team had desserts of Yuzu cheesecake, and Mochi after dinner. Everything was delicious. Service was friendly and accommodating. For large parties, they recommend reservations ordering ahead, because there is one chef and it takes time for him to prepare each meal. Made a reservation for the omakase for my birthday and got to sit in the fun section in the front where you're recessed into the floor. When I say this omakase situation is a VALUE...they brought out so much food we couldn't believe it. It just kept on coming. We were physically uncomfortable at the end but what a shame to let it go to waste, right? This was too much raw fish for me with at least two fully sashimi courses, PLUS a nigiri course, PLUS a maki course, in addition to several other delicious apps. We really enjoyed the wings and scallops, as well as the crispy bao with pork belly. Though I have to say my favorites were somehow the desserts -- a vanilla bean cheesecake with to-die-for lemon whipped cream and homemade ice cream with incredible shortbread crumbles. I was stuffed but we found room to finish those desserts. As part of the omakase we also got unlimited drinks included, so I enjoyed multiple tasty NA cocktails and my partner tried several sakes. (Like I said, the omakase is an amazing value!) Presentation on everything was so thoughtful and lovely. Service was great. They had a good variety of choices a few friends chose that we shared including a popcorn lobster roll with fried lobster crumbs on the sushi. I wasn't disappointed with anything I tried. Service: was pretty good, the waitress was pretty attentive and quick. At some point in the drinks phase, they had asked us to move from the booth table for a bigger party and gave us complimentary 10% off the meal for the inconvenience. Honestly the new table was better imo for the group, ducked off to see the mesmerizing ceiling lamps. Ambiance: sushi bar vibes. We came here for my birthday dinner, which the staff was aware of. We spent almost $200 on food but they didn't give a free dessert or do anything special for the event, which was pretty disappointing as I feel that's usually a nice touch and plenty of other restaurants do it. I think it would be really nice if you guys could incorporate that into your restaurant practice somehow. That aside, let's talk food. We ordered the spicy tofu bites and crispy wings as an appetizer. The tofu bites had good flavor but when I think tempura I expect it to be crispy and not soggy. I think it's due to the tofu sitting in the sauce instead of being drizzled or maybe separated somehow. The wings were phenomenal. I think everyone should try these at least once! The sushi and sashimi were really quite nice. It's probably one of the top spots for sushi in Metro Detroit. I've personally had better, but that's only because I've been to Hawaii and Japan so I try to be fair when comparing places to other local places. Toro was not my favorite, it's sad to say that Kura has a superior Toro in my opinion. The yuzu dessert was just okay, not a tart as I would have hoped and I was left wanting for more yuzu flavor. However the mango cheesecake mochi really delivered with the mango flavor and was so pleasant texturally I wanted about 10 more orders of that! The "traditional" seating was not so traditional. I can't believe I've waited so long to review this spot, because I don't think it gets enough love as a go to spot around town. This is a fantastic spot with great food, great atmosphere and amazing service. I'm drawing a lot of this from memory, and the way my memory is the fact it stands out should be proof enough of how much I enjoyed. I think we were here either on opening day or maybe the next day, so the first thing to notice is that it was great from the get go. There wasn't a breaking in period, a slow start, a disco ball falling from the sky onto a crowd of coked up partiers.... oh wait that was Club 54 in 1978 (probably). Walking in, the restaurant is beautiful, like walking into a Japanese dream. Lanterns light and hang in multitudes throughout the restaurants, offering a soft glow that is great for dinner but not so great for the picture taking ;). Sitting down, we were greeted very quickly and placed a saki bomb order to start the night. Being an Izakaya, we were able to order several dishes to get a wide variety dishes to try. The curry rice was my favorite, I can mainly say this with great confidence because that's the only one I remember the name. Outside of that I do believe I enjoyed everything except the fried chicken, and not because it was bad, but because there was nothing unique to it. It was like popcorn chicken you could get anywhere. It wasn't too far from my hotel and while waiting for my room to be ready I decided to check it out! Yes, Yes and Yes! The vibes are definitely like your in Japan with ambiance and the lights and decor. Really cool, they give you several options on where you can sit such as even on the floor. It was just me so I did the sushi bar! I got the Bash signature roll and omg it was HUGE, barely could fit a roll in my mouth but so flavorful and filling! The bathroom too which was cool and interesting at the same time I believe had a bidet and you're able to program it off to the wall. Ravien who was the girl who waited on me, very nice and friendly as well as the host who seated me. All in all this place is definitely worth trying! I will be coming back! Some people may think 22.00 for a roll is a lot but with inflation and it being sushi (a signature roll at that), I mean it's what I expect. I always love visiting Bash because the staff is always friendly, the food is always good and the atmosphere is always serene. It is nestled in the heart of WSU's campus but it's not overly crowded in the area especially during dinner. That's not to say that toys place doesn't get packed but it's more like you can find street parking fairly easily. They have a variety of izakaya dishes as well as sushi.
