While most in the Alternative arts and medicine community have incredible hearts and caring personalities, very few have achieved what I would call a high-level of practice, or, "Master" status. It takes a dedicated practice and training with highly qualified teachers (the 2 main factors that are missing in most practitioners'/teachers' backgrounds). Scott has trained intensively (and I'm not talking about a year here or few months there) with the best, and continues to dedicate himself to his practice to this day. Scott's expertise becomes more and more apparent the longer you study with him, as he never shows off his abilities or strains to prove himself. I wish nothing more than for him to get into the ring with one of these "Mixed Martial Arts" fighters, thoroughly kick their ass, and end that nonsense of a sport. Alas, he would never do such a thing. Scott's teaching style is very individualized, meaning everyone gets a lot of attention. He is attuned to the needs and sensitivities of each student, however different they are, and will adjust the lesson accordingly. From young children to older people, he has an enormous range as a teacher and instructor. I am looking forward to when my daughter will be old enough to begin taking kung-fu lessons with him. Where to begin, first of all about me and who I am, I'm 29 years old I've been studying buddhism,…read moremeditation, and body awareness practices steadily since I was about 12. I spent about 4 of those years heavily involved in aikido (w/ Frank Doran-sensei), kenjustsu (kashima shin-ryu) and kyudo (ANKF). More recently I spent about the last 5 years living in China as a full time live-in (gongfu) student of a daoist priest. I have been helping a friend teach some of his classes in the San Francisco area but have so far refrained from making it a personal profession though I have been encouraged to do otherwise. What to say about Scott? Having met various teachers in China, Japan, the US, and even some in South America, I have never met one that held a candle to Scott's mastery of gongfu (kung fu) as a vehicle for self defense, a cultural art form, or a vehicle for spiritual transformation, let alone all of them together or with an understanding of why they all matter and how they relate. I've met a lot of folks who traveled to china to live and train there, sometimes for years. It's really exciting to go to a place where it looks like "just in the movies". The thing about someone like Scott is... he's hard to spot. He doesn't live in a temple. He doesn't wear robes or have a topknot. He doesn't live in China and he's not Chinese. He doesn't even follow certain ritual forms of sounding profound that are standard among such teachers or drop buzzwords. So you typically need to have some background in order to see what he has. If you have a mature appetite for martial arts and want to train with the best, go check him out. If you are just curious and want to see what he's up to or if it's a good fit, he's very approachable and loves to talk about this stuff. If you're looking for cardio-kickboxing or to prove how tough you are to people, you should go somewhere else for that.

I did tons and tons of research into authentic martial arts schools in northern Colorado (north of Denver, specifically). LWK is a small-ish dojo that will actually teach your child respect, discipline, work ethic, and confidence. It's not a place to send your kids for half a year only to quit when getting promoted to their third belt level is too hard. The instructors pay so much attention to detail and are even handed in having both junior and senior students polish their forms. They're also very approachable, offering up direct assessments upon request in class based on student concerns. There is an opportunity at the end of every class to get instructor feedback so you/your student will know what to work on. They are transparent about the costs, with no huge jump from the introductory period to the first official month. You can find both the tuition rates and class schedule on the website and see if it will work for you before joining. There are family discounts and a weapons class was recently added to the roster. Another area where LWK is awesomely transparent is that they have pamphlets on how belt promotions work: what forms/moves are the students expected to master. That way you have a clear idea of how to move forward. This is because LWK has been around for thirty years, which says a lot. This is an environment where the students do traditional Japanese martial arts warm ups, learn the Japanese names of their forms (nothing overwhelming), bow to each other when entering the mat/sparring/leaving class/demonstrating their forms at the end of class, where senior classmates voluntarily help junior classmates, where they recite a code of honor at the beginning and end of every class, where expectations are clear, and hard work is the norm. If you/your student are looking for a place with learned teachers, a decades long tradition of quality instruction, old school values of dedication/respect, and a welcoming-and-self-challenging environment in which to train, this is it. As with everything, you will only ever get what you put into it. 15 minutes per day of at-home practice never hurt anyone. I hope that this is giving the reader a sense of what the school is like and that it's set up for students to succeed. Everything is transparent, the tuition is reasonable (and many forms of payment are accepted), to eliminate obstacles to joining so the student and their family can just focus on their work and progress. Progress is enriched here because LWK is highly involved in the authentic Karate community in northern Colorado. They're among the handful that host a tournament every year, judging certification clinics are held here, and the recent inclusion of the kobudo (weapons) class shows a commitment to exposing students to Karate as a whole. Signing up to LWK is to join a Karate ecosystem with peers to challenge you/your student towards betterment. My only complaint is that the complimentary uniforms are affordable due to being cotton/polyester blends, and plastic-based synthetic fabrics are highly environmentally damaging in the wash because they shed lots of microplastics that wreck oceans and inevitably come back to harm the human biosphere as well. If you're a person who is committed to slowing climate change and believe that human behavior has been immoral on this topic, then I'd recommend looking into 100% cotton uniforms and belts before signing up for LWK.

As a result, the correct mechanics of the form are taught first, then technically refined over time once those have been demonstrated properly. In this way, all students can progress without taking up the whole class for just one form instruction. Also, very importantly, Shifu is always watching your body mechanics, stance, hand/feet position and work, point toe, etc. every step of the way and will call it out if incorrect or needs adjustment.
