Popcorns everywhere!…read more Landmark Cinemas in south London provided a good movie experience. It featured 8 theatre rooms within a colourful retro interior. There is a concession immediately past the entrance and large popcorn refill for their members and they were willing to provide smaller bags. The actual movie audio/visual experience was great. The big screen is huge compared to smaller independent theatre chains (Imagine), and has no reflective glare for better picture quality. The reclined lounge seats are comfortable and make for decent view even near the front. Interestingly, we noticed there were premiere seats with recliners paired side-by-side within a partition for couples viewing. Their Movie Club membership included a movie admission each month, concession discount and waived online booking fee. Only blemish was the popcorn spread over the concession floor that no one seemed to be assigned to sweep away. A seating area is available to wait before showtime as staff cleaned up the theatre room. Skip it or hit it? It's worth coming for a comfortable movie showing especially if you overlook the popcorn strewn over the floor.

Western University has its own movie theater! The first time I visited, I wasn't sure what to…read moreexpect. But I was pleasantly surprised by a nice, clean theater with a large screen and comfortable seats, and concession prices that are cheaper than a typical movie theater. Second-run movie theaters I've been to usually have sticky floors and are filled with screaming children and/or high school kids doing inappropriate things. Western Film is much nicer! Western Film usually screens two second-run movies per week, one at 7 PM and another at 9:30, along with occasional midnight screenings of cult favorites. Tickets are $5 on most nights, and you don't need to be affiliated with Western to go or to buy tickets. On Tuesdays, tickets are only $3.50. I've been twice, and it wasn't very busy either time, including during the week that tickets were free. There are a variety of parking lots of campus, some of which are free for the 7 PM show, one of which is free for the late show, and a couple of which are always free on Fridays and weekends. Check out the Western Film website for more info about parking; I believe the parking regulations change with some frequency. If you don't mind waiting a few weeks to catch a new movie, Western film is surely the cheapest way in town to see movies on the big screen.

The Grand Theatre, under a variety of different names has been entertaining Londoners for over 100…read moreyears. I have been going to shows for over 30 years and am rarely disappointed. That being said, I don't go to every show but normally pick two or three a year that most interest me - not including smaller productions downstairs at the McManus or one off concerts or events. Admitedly, it may not have the production values of a big Broadway play but more importantly it doesn't have the cost. The seats are comfortable (well, relatively) the lobby and lounges are well decorated and they often off rotating art and/or interactive displays set up. There is a decent selection of beer and wine to be enjoyed at intermission and even cookies and juice for the kids - all at reasonable prices. Ideally situated in the heart of Richmond Row, it's easy to have a nice dinner beforehand or apres show drinks. I'm always amazed when I hear some people say they've never been as it's always been a part of my life and the cultural experience. I mean - yes, sure -- I've seen some plays that I enjoyed less than others but this can be pretty easily avoided with a little careful selection of what shows to see. London is lucky to have regional theatre of such an amazing caliber and I hope it's around for another 100 years!

An independent cinema is always fantastic, the Hyland is a treasure. A single screen - which can…read moreshow everything from blockbusters, vintage silent movies, to special runs and re-releases, foreign and non-english films, and special events. This place is well-run and clean. The staff is always friendly and informed about coming shows and events. I especially like that for special events, there can be a curated pre-show of interviews and related ads (i.e. - vintage tie-in toy ads for the Star Wars shows). Some of the standout special events we've attended over the years have been: the world premier of Women Talking with a talk by the director, a silent film festival with an expert speaker and a live pianist to play the accompanying music, series marathons (Lord of The Rings and StarWars), a Mama Mia sing-along (I can't remember if that was a planned event or just happened organically), and The Rocky Horror Picture Show with costumes encouraged (like any good RHPS showing there was excellent audience participation). The popcorn is always hot and fresh. Fair notice, it's an old theatre with old theatre seats (my husband always brings a cushion). The parking lot can be a bit chaotic but I find that part of the charm. There's plenty of street parking in the neighborhood.

I'll admit, indie, art, and foreign films aren't my thing, but Hyland does release some more well known films, just a bit later than the big guys. And you know what? That's okay! I'll gladly take Hyland's old school vibe over the other guy's incessant advertising and jacked up prices. This theatre brings me back to the good old days of movie going. Plush fabric seats, no cup holders, and no stairs, just the good old slanty floor. Same goes for the concession stand. Very simple, and quite affordable, with lots of unique options like artisan popcorn. I went to Hyland to see the Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2 double feature. What a treat! Thankfully we purchased our tickets online through their paypal system because it was buuuusy! Almost completely full! They have a retro night called "Retromania" which this event was a part of. There was a lot of parking in the back but it was full when we arrived. Thankfully there is a lot of parking on the streets nearby. It was a bit unfortunate that they started a half an hour late but with a line up out the door, GO HYLAND GO! We didn't get out of there until 2:30 or so. Thankfully they kept the concession stand open between the films and they sell coffee and tea. I had a blast at Hyland and I definitely want to catch more films there! PS: FUN FACT, my dad used to go on dates at Hyland Cinema in the 70s! This place has a lot of history. I suggest checking out their website and reading about it!

Recently went for our first visit since the switch to Gateway. They took out the giant octopus…read moreride, which was a negative for me. They added a new "table" section where you can play craps, blackjack, roulette and baccarat. There is a real roulette wheel and oversize craps dice, although the craps wasn't working during our visit. They now have Willy Wonka and Invaders from the Planet Moolah (good), but the rest of the digital slots have the appearance of lower-end machines. This is perplexing. If they went to the trouble of putting in new digital machines then one would think that they would add premium slots. Not in love with the My Club rewards that replaced Winners Circle. Firstly, they put "Mrs." on my card. I've never been a Mrs., nor was I asked how I would like my name to appear. Winners Circle would put a nickname on your card if you asked! It's terribly anachronistic in 2018 for a corporate entity to address a customer in such a fashion. Secondly, there is no free play during the month of your birthday. How tight or loose the comps are remains to be seen. Parking is still free, but the first two rows are handicapped only. Free coffee, tea and soft drinks.

When you play on a table you should know not to have your beverages or food over the cloth, put objects on the table or do anything that may damage the equipment. A staff member approached you (any one should be able to inform you of this basic ettiquette) and politely asked you to keep your drink back from the table and the reason why. You became immediately confrontational - Why? Who are You? Are you "even" staff? They informed you of all this.... You then decided to amp up needlessly situation and you know all the other things that you and your party did and I'm not going to get into that... The staff at Strokers are excellent and everyone is welcome there, and many people from many different nationalities and walks of life play there - what it boils down to is that you had a chip on your shoulder and instead of just accepting the staffs request you decided to take offense and then double down on that, saying it was due to race - and that is just disgusting. I've admittedly made indiscretions of my own at times and have been reminded by staff of rules and ettiquette, as have many players - all you had to do was be polite and accepting instead of taking it personal - maybe you should reflect on your own actions of Saturday night - you ruined the night for yourself, your friends and frankly for staff who work very hard for the patrons and deserve better. Strokers is one of the very best halls in all of Ontario and despite your false misleading review will continue to be successful for all the hard work its owner and staff do to maintain an excellent room.
