We were very loyal and happy customers for over seven years -- until, without any warning or notice, we were dropped from service the morning we were expecting our daily walk. We were literally given three hours notice, after 7+ years of being daily customers. We had had three different In Their Element walkers, from when our dog was a puppy until now at 7.5 years old, and we were mostly very happy with all of them and Glenn's communication/company. Recently, our walker of several years, whom we absolutely loved, left, so we had to switch to another one. After four weeks with the new walker, Glenn called to say that they wouldn't be walking our dog anymore. We were shocked. We were told the new walker didn't like how our dog would bark when he came to the door and in his van. The walker had mentioned this to us a couple days prior and we said we'd work on curbing the barking -- but there was never any mention of the potential of our dog getting dropped. In fact, the walker told us how great our dog was while hiking on the trail! As you can imagine, we felt completely blindsided and left in a lurch when Glenn called to say the walker wouldn't be taking our dog anymore, effective immediately. None of the other walkers had had any issues with our dog's behavior over the last seven years. Regardless, we respect different handlers' styles and would have of course worked to find solutions -- but we were never given that chance. Glenn did offer to walk our dog himself for one more week, but he made it clear that it would be an inconvenience to him. And after having the proverbial rug pulled from under us like that, it felt like an empty gesture that wouldn't make a difference. He also said that they would take our dog back once/if his barking improved in a few months, but again, given how they were dropping us immediately in the meanwhile, it didn't make matters any better. You would think that after being so supportive of this company for so many years, they would have worked with us a bit -- at least given us some notice or a trial period. We wish they would have discussed the severity of the situation with us (we had no clue!), and that we could have talked about it and hopefully worked towards finding a solution, rather than being completely blindsided and dropped. The utter lack of conversation, communication and professionalism was stunning, and we are highly disappointed to have had our relationship with this company ended this way. read more

Ben the Golden/Lab mix was a rough pup when we adopted him at six months old. He pulled with all his 90 pounds on the leash and was really tough to walk. When I moved back to Oakland, I had to figure out a lot of stuff by myself, and it was a little overwhelming. When we started with ITE 2 years ago, Glenn and the dogwalker Luke came over to meet us in person. They made me feel really comfortable right away. Since then, they got online billing and a cool Instagram page. Bebe totally loved Erin. But the reason you should hire ITE for your dog care is that they really care about your dog. A few months ago, a friend's beloved dog got very sick. She brought him to UC Davis to save his life, but he didn't make it. Turns out it was leptospirosis...the same bacteria mentioned in an email I received from Glenn warning me about...you guessed it...a mysterious, but luckily still rare ailment befalling Bay Area dogs. I'm glad to know Glenn and his team were onto this, and I appreciate them letting me know how I could protect Bebe. Five stars and more. read more

Glenn initially seemed like a great fit for our dog and the walks were good (though FYI, notes they leave that are so highly advertised are never as long or as thorough as they claim) but a month in, he very abruptly dropped us as clients. Glenn called and simply said they could no longer walk our dog due to staff changes. I have no idea if our dog was a bad fit or if they actually had staff changes, but we got little explanation and were given few alternatives. Given that both myself and my partner work full time, and that he gave us less than a week's (6 days) notice for dropping us, it's been a pretty huge inconvenience and he hasn't seemed overly apologetic. What's worse, they're asking for payment immediately and in full. We understand that we were getting dropped at the end of a pay cycle, but it's not the most delicate technique in cutting a customer to say in the same breath that payment is also due. Obviously we know we'll have to pay. If you're going to bring up money so soon in this situation, you'd think it'd be to say our last walk or 2 would be complimentary due to the inconvenience. Not the case. TLDR; the walks are fine, but I don't think this business particularly respects or values new customers. They could drop you at any moment, and will seemingly give it minimal thought. *UPDATE* : Glenn called and wrote to apologize/clarify the misunderstanding, which was nice. It seems there's still some confusion about how much notice we were given. He told us 1 week, but apparently if we had asked for more time he would have said ok. Good to know, but it shouldn't be on the customer to ask for more than what's being offered. Next time, just give them 2 weeks. read more

My dog was walked by In Their Element for about 6 months. She started off with Glenn, the owner, who was great. He told me repeatedly how easy and well behaved my dog was, and that she was great at "training" new dogs in pack and trail manners. After a couple months, per company policy, he passed my dog on to another walker, Francis, who would become her assigned walker. One day, I was parked in front of my house while my baby napped in the car, and I saw Francis pick my dog up. I saw him hold her leash down with his foot so close to her neck that she had no choice but to lie down on her side. He then pinned her down on her back until she cried. As he walked down the stairs, I saw him kick her in the snout when she tried to walk ahead of him, not once, but twice. Hard enough that she cried. This is a dog that I have never heard cry before. I immediately contacted Glenn who essentially told me that he didn't believe me "All the other clients love Francis", and that it was company policy not to let the dog walk ahead of the walker in the stairs, so probably Francis was reinforcing that. He did comp me a couple weeks of walks. Needless to say, they never came near my dog again, and I would advise you not to let them near yours! read more

We have been with In Their Element since September and love it. Glenn is very thorough and only hires amazing walkers, so you know your dog is going to be in great hands. They do an introductory meeting so you (and your dog) get to meet everyone first, which is great. Our dog loves his hikes, and they do such a great job of keeping the walk groups small and consistent, so the dogs get to spend their time with their friends. Because they take such care in who they hire, and keeping walks small, there are rare occasions where they are short a walker and need some pups to forgo walks, which isn't a problem for us since Glenn always gives a lot of notice and I work close to home. Online scheduling and automatic payments are also really easy. In a few clicks I can add or cancel walks, and I never have to worry about making a payment since it's set up with my card. Our dog walker also happens to be an excellent water color painter, and gave us a watercolor of our dog for christmas which was amazing! read more
