A Taste of India in Mystic, CT was a place I genuinely wanted to love. My family and I are huge…read morefans of South Asian food, and if you've read any of my past reviews, you know we frequent Indian and Pakistani restaurants often. Because of that, our bar is admittedly set pretty high--which may have influenced how we felt about this visit. Overall, the experience was average. This is a family-owned restaurant, and there were definite bright spots. The chicken momos were outstanding and easily the highlight of the meal. They were flavorful, well-cooked, and something I'd actually come back for. Unfortunately, the rest of the dishes didn't quite meet the same standard. We ordered the Chilli Chicken with Vegetable Fried Rice, Chicken Vindaloo, and Chicken Biryani. While the portion sizes were generous--and we appreciated the complimentary garlic naan--the food itself was overly salty and lacked depth of flavor. On a positive note, they also included a free dessert: Gulab Jamun, which was very good and a nice touch to end the meal. Service-wise, the generosity with portions and extras was appreciated, but flavor is ultimately what matters most, and that's where the meal fell short for us. If you're in the Mystic area and craving Indian food, A Taste of India may be worth a stop, especially for the momos. That said, there are likely stronger options not too far away. Overall rating: 3.25 out of 5

The food was amazing. We had a hard time stopping myself from eating any more. I was doing my little happy hum. We had several naan bread; paneer tikki masala; Chicken Bhuma masala and gulag yamun. We definitely will come back or even order to go. This is a little gem. Only suggestion is for the owners to have some Indian music as background.

My wife and I were craving Indian food and this restaurant was highly rated. The high ratings were…read morewell deserved. The owners are from Bangladesh, and they are quick to point out that this is not an East Indian restaurant but a fusion restaurant (I have never been clear on what a fusion restaurant is other than expanded menu). There were a number of dishes normally seen on menu from an Indian restaurant but no Nan bread. Instead they have paratha which if found I liked more The food was excellent. Previous cautions regarding wait time for food correct as I think every thing is freshly made rather than scooped up from last weeks offering. The ambience was modest (think small town diner rather than five star Michelin restaurant). I am more interested in quality of food. They do have a nice outdoor space. They caution regarding how hot you order food. My wife ordered it at 1/10 and was good. I have the Fireman's bowl and I think that is a 3 or 4 out of 10. I asked to have an order of Dal for take out at the heat that the chef usually eat it at. After signing a consent form and waiver (joking) she gave me an order of dal at 8/10. I tried it at this heat and yes, probably should have a glass of milk or some yogurt to cut the heat. I will try a 10/10 next time. All I all an excellent experience and one to be repeated.

It was sumptuous and delicious. For dinner, we had the garlic nan, which is always great, Vindaloo with shrimp, and Chettinad with Chicken. All amazing. The food is always freshly prepared, quiet, comfortable ambience, and excellent service. The owner/Cook, Nalini, pours her heart and soul into her grandmother's traditional recipes that have been passed down to her. A wonderful. Interesting person as well. Some history: I have eaten at probably 3 Indian restaurants in my life before discovering The Curry Queen. None of them caught my interest - I just didn't get it. But I like Thai curry, so we stumbled into the Curry Queen several years ago. OMG, the combination of spices is so interesting and tasty, the meat is lean, the menu is broad and varied, and vegetarian dishes are endless and delicious (I'm not vegetarian). It is a consistently wonderful experience. Shocking to find this in Old Saybrook. CT! The closest thing I've found to this level is an Indian restaurant in Northern Wales two years ago. If you're in CT, don't miss a chance to try The Curry Queen!
