I've been here twice before and I believe everything was fine. Today was a very different story. We just wanted a quick light snack/lunch so we ordered fish pakoras, which I've never had before and vegetable pakoras which we get frequently at Indian restaurants. I think someone made a terrible mistake with vegetables and accidentally poured an entire box of salt on them rendering them inedible. HOWEVER, the fish pakoras were excellent. My pappadams were a bit salty as well which overwhelmed the caraway seeds. Very disappointed in today's visit. read more

The Royal Punjabi has to be one of the best restaurants in the area! Norwich mainly seems to have fast food chains and American type places, but this spot is the exception. I came with a few coworkers for lunch and there were plenty of people picking up their meals. There is some seating there, but not a ton. Either way, you order at the counter. I really enjoyed my Lamb Curry, the only complaint being that the meat could have been a bit more tender. However, the flavor of the curry was so delicious that I didn't mind. I order from the Royal Punjabi often so I can't say much about their ambiance since I've never sat down in one. I can say that their food is delicious and whenever I call to check on something the people on the phone are super kind. I usually order Chicken Tikka Masala spicy and add potatoes. The Masala is rich, tomatoey, and spicy with a beautifully cooked and salted rice. It's really one of my biggest go tos when I want food. My bf always orders the Chicken Korma and is always super happy with that. It's also a nice creamy rich dish topped with a bit of almonds and raisins. The samosas are well spiced and delicious served with a tamarind sauce though sometimes they only send two and other times three. The mango lassi is lovely. And this one's weird but I truly truly recommend their chicken wings and curly fries! I honestly think they have THE best chicken wings in this area. And you needddd to try the curly fries. Their crispy and flavorful and spiced with a Cajun rub. Just delicious. If you're looking for delicious wings or Indian food in Norwich, this is the place. read more

We got Butter Chicken (so good!), Chicken Tikka (so good!), Shrimp Tikka (it was OK), Curry Chicken (we got mild... should have gotten medium), and garlic nan (it was so good!), and samosas (huge! Wow. Easy five stars. Tried Indian food for the first time ever tonight. I know a lot of people that do not like it so I was nervous. (I love food, and I'm cheap so I didn't want you waste my money). The shop could use some help visually too so that also made me a little weary. Some organization and paint could do wonders. But the food.. We ordered the lamb Korma (medium) and the chicken vindaloo (hot) with 2 garlic naan bread. It was all fantastic. The vindaloo brought the heat and actually made my husband sweat, we are big fans of spicy food but usually disappointed. Not disappointed here. Both meals were flavorful, tasted fresh and the lamb was so incredibly tender. My hubby doesn't like lamb and he wants to get it next time. The portions were also fantastic. We ate there, brought home leftovers, ate them for dinner tonight and I still have some left. We will absolutely be back. read more

Chef Gurpreet Singh did not surprise us as he served awesome food. This I am saying with good intentions as I cannot believe any sardarji can make bad food and I salute to everyone of them. What surprised us is the gentleman with multinational lineage who took the order and convinced us to try specific dish which was not in our plan. What also surprised us that everything except the Samosa was freshly made unlike claimed (and it was tasty but picked from a retail frozen box so -1 star). What was strange is the run down location in the middle of the city (is this yet another Detroit) but I will go back to try more of Mr Singh's dishes. And, yes there is plenty of parking nearby some looks tad worrying even though next to Superior court and many law offices. I was told that this was the best Indian spot in the area, so I decided to come for takeout. Street parking only. We got the chicken curry, lamb saag, butter chicken, and chicken tikka masala, which all comes with basmati rice. By the way, medium spicy was not enough heat for us. There are 3 levels of spice (mild, medium, and hot) Out of the four, our favorite is the chicken tikka masala. The tikka masala just has a bolder and more flavorful taste compare to the rest. The butter chicken had more of a dairy flavor, as expected and it is our second favorite out of the four. This sauce is just buttery tomato sauce. The chicken curry was alright but not the best I have had, especially coming from bigger cities with more Indian restaurants. The lamb saag was our least favorite. The spices in the saag were just not our type of taste. We also got garlic naan, which goes well with the sauces from the entrees mentioned above. The naan was a little soggy but it was wrapped and transported a couple minutes before eating. In addition, we also got mango lassi for drinks. It was very yogurty. Comes kind of thick. 3 stars looks so sad, but I cannot, in good conscious, give it higher. I'll start with the good. The food was tasty. Not the best Indian food I've ever had, but warm and fresh. The sauces are tasty. Now the not so good: Space was small and kind of dingy. It looks like it was updated recently, but then not really kept clean. The buffet was very limited. 8 steamers with one being toaster Naan and one being Gulab Jamin. There were 2 chicken dishes, and 4 vegetable. One of the chicken dishes was fried chicken legs. As I mentioned, the naan provided to the buffet the day I was there was commercial toaster naan. Not really the same thing at all. The buffet had Styrofoam plates and cups, with plastic utensils. This place seems like it would be good for takeout/delivery. But as a buffet, I'm less than whelmed. The staff was pleasant enough. Not overly friendly. Not rude at all. I've been meaning to leave a review of this place for sometime now. I moved down to CT this year and have been looking for a unique spot to eat at. I have tried some Indian food before like butter chicken and chicken tikka masala and have been interested to try more ever since. The Royal Punjabi allowed me to do just that. I've been eating something from the menu every other week and becoming more and more familiar with Indian flavors and food vocabulary. You can choose to have your meal mild or more spicy. I was doing mild until I realized that medium was good for me. I've been able to experience so many new flavors and food items that I am grateful for the experience each week. Try anything noted to have Indian seasoning. For example, the curry and Indian dry rub wings are awesome, as well as the chicken pakora. The sauces are great as well, and I now like tamarind sauce. Thank you for that! I would have given five stars but I feel like the cost of the menu seems to be a little too expensive. Going by myself, It wasn't uncommon to break $20 and even up to $30. If the menu was a little more affordable, I think it would become a more attractive option for a lot more people, and I may revisit once I tried all the items I am interested in. The chicken and vegetarian options in particular seem to go a bit high for me. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for seafood, lamb, and goat, but chicken and vegetables are very inexpensive in comparison. I may reconsider the price judgment in the future if I find that they have set the bar for flavor, for everyone to follow. read more

We ordered a lamb pasanda and a chicken korma spiced medium. Both were outstanding, the pasanda had a delicately flavored tomato gravy, and the korma was creamy and rich. Next time I will probably ask to push up the spice level, but I'm not complaining, because it was delicious. Portions are generous. The dining area is spartan, and it looks like they do mainly take out business. Still, the whole space looked clean as a whistle. The staff are very polite. We hope to visit again soon. read more

You can order at the counter and they will bring the food out when it's ready. I got the chicken vindaloo and garlic naan. The garlic naan was a smaller portion than expected but very good. The vindaloo was vibrant and flavorful. I almost ordered another one to go! The medium spicy wasn't very spicy at all. If you like food on the spicier side, definitely get hot. Their Naan Bread (reg. or Garlic) is great and their Basmati Rice is great too. I don't like seeds or whole Peppercorns etc. So I did not like what I ordered today, the Karahi Chicken...which had seeds or Peppercorn throughout and it was spicy when I ordered mild. (Not spicy) Due to a surgery I can't have spicy. Every other dish I've tried so far is great, even my 8 year old son loves it! I only order delivery from here, not sure how the restaurant itself is. So, I've been ordering from here for years and my favorite dishes are the Daal Soup, chicken soup and Rogan Josh. The food seems authentic in that it is spicy, tangy and flavorful. My major issue is that sometimes they do not answer their phone during lunchtime for hours. I feel lucky when I can get through, but they inconsistently answer the phone. Okay, this was our first time ever ordering/eating anything from here. We heard it was in Norwich, passed by it and my husband and I read some reviews. Were never committed to stopping, but today after tons of yardwork and no one wanting to cook...we took a chance and ordered. Me: chicken tiki masala Hubby: chicken saag Also ordered an appetizer of lemon pepper wings (8 in the order, we asked for all drumlettes) and an order of regular Naan bread. We were having it delivered. They said 30 minutes and we got it in 30 minutes. Let's start with the wings, they were indeed all drummletts as we asked, they were fried to perfection. Great flavor, I thought it was just a touch too lemony at first, but they actually were not. The crunch, the size of them were good too...not tiny. I seriously could've eaten all 8 myself but I had to share with hubby, lol. Next... My food- chicken tiki masala....my hubby tasted the sauce and said, You're probably not gonna like it cuz it's not sweet ( like at another place we've gone). Well, nope.... that meal was truly great, the rice, perfect... the chicken chunks big, the masala sauce...I loved it. I ate almost half of the container of rice with half if the chicken. Sooooo good! Only complaint is that the Naan bread was only one, cut in half...but it did taste good. I tasted the sauce from my hubby's order of chicken saag, it had a nice little kick to it, not too too spicy....but too much for me, but the flavor was good too.
