    Lovely stones from Salame Jewelry

I found the winter event via Facebook last year, and was glad I did! This year was just as good, if not better, as I came a little more prepared. I was also happy to find out that there is a summer event, too! Glad I can purchase local goods all in one location twice a year. The building is a little confusing, and there are a lot of vendors (just under 60 according the website!), so I recommend giving yourself plenty of time to peruse. I parked on a side street both times, and wasn't too far from the venue, but I could see one might end up somewhat far if they came during peak time. I arrived early enough this time to pick up a goodie bag, which included a couple of items from vendors (wearing the nail polish I received right now - thanks Different Dimensions!) as well as some coupons (didn't see these until I got home - check your bag before you shop!). I checked out the vendor list before I came to expedite things, since it can be a bit crowded. Worked out great - I had purchased a ring last year from Sloane Jewelry and lost it, so wanted to get another because I loved it. I didn't see my ring at her booth, but I asked just in case, and sure enough she had the ring I was looking for behind the booth! So if you don't see quite what you're looking for, check with the vendor. There are lots of great things to see and buy - make sure you make it to both the gym and the basement! Various artist's studios, as well.

Those interested in getting a REAL taste of what Indianapolis has to offer, you must visit this awesome arts festival! A glimpse into the true heart of Indiana. A place where people of all colors, creeds and classes come together to appreciate the beauty and creativity of local artists. My first visit was also my first time as a vendor for the event. Even though it was ri-donk-ulously hot and humid, the Indy folk turned out in fine style! Everyone was so generous, considerate and chill. The booths are set up around the Harrison Art Center, as well as inside the art center halls and gymnasium. Even though the space is a bit tight throughout the grounds, you can still get some space in the indoor art galleries. Rooms and halls are lined with the most amazing glass works, paintings, and other creations from urban artists in the nearby neighborhoods. I took a quick break to grab a cider from New Day and check out the booths for a minute. The building is kind of a maze, but it was fun to explore President Benjamin Harrison's community church. Alas, I didn't get the chance to stop by the Yelp booth, but if you were one of the first 100 lucky chums to check in to the event, you received a super cute IHE canvas bag with some groovy swag from various vendors. So bummed I couldn't get one. There's also some good eats at the festival, thanks to many of Indy's rockin' food trucks! And where was my booth? Right next to Scratch Truck and the General American Donut Co. food truck. Great. The donut truck had the audacity to have a donut ice cream sandwich! Rob had two. He told everyone who came by our booth about the awesomeness that he just experienced. He should've received some sort of commission for pushing their food. Even better, this event is free! And most of the vendors use the Square readers, making it easier to impulse spend. The atmosphere is family-friendly, where people can get their artsy fartsy fix. The prices are quite affordable, and the goods are more utilitarian. Not just home and garden decor, but things that can be used on a daily basis. You will definitely walk away with something! The only downer is the parking. It's definitely slim pickens. There's a couple nearby lots that charge for parking, but they fill up fast. I'd definitely get there early for a decent spot. if you come out in the middle of the day, expect to park 3-5 blocks away. Most of the artists that participate in this event are also involved with the shop that hosts the festival, Homespun Indy. if you enjoyed the IHE, then you can get unique, local products year-round at their Mass Ave location. The festival continues to captivate the hearts, minds and support of the Indy community, and that's pretty awesome.

First 100 people to check in on Yelp get these awesome swag bags!

What a fun street/music festival! There were over 100 vendors with some of the coolest jewelry and hand crafted art pieces I have seen. This was a great set-up and easy to navigate. Live music, delicious treats, and amazing artists to check out!

Listening to local singer songwriters while awaiting the opening of the event.

Super easy event to attend. The IMAF is an annual tradition of low fuss, high quality art, music, and food on Indy's Old Northside. The density of quality exhibitors coupled with convenience make this a very worthy event to put on the calendar and repeat.

    A sampling of goodies.

If you want a fun activity on the Indy Northside, look no further!…read more I came here with a group of colleagues for a fun night out from the lab. It was a nice social activity that also allowed moments of quiet to focus on your piece. I find this dynamic kind of nice because I'm not one to talk endlessly even when I'm with my friends. They have tons of pieces to choose from, ranging in price and size, so you can make this activity as much as you want to get out of it. There's no studio fee, so glazes and kiln services are included with your price. They have just about all the colors of glaze, which have a display on the wall by the glaze bottles. The staff are all very friendly, Brooke and Fernando were especially attentive to us throughout the evening. They made sure to help keep our workspace tidy and helped with some glazing and artistic touches. Importantly, we never felt rushed with the process, which helped us feel like we could make something we're proud of. They also have some glass fusing stuff as well, so you can make some kinds of mosaic glass lamp shades (or at least that's what was shown throughout the space). I'm curious how that's priced, because that would be another cool outing! Pottery pieces take about a week to be fired in the kiln, so I don't have my masterpiece back yet. I'm very excited to receive it! They also provide shipping, so if you're a little further away, you can still get your piece. I'm sure I'll be back again before too long!

I had just discovered Hammer and Stain on…read moreFacebook after some girlfriends were discussing making craft events part of our get together this year. The best part is there is no clean up after or even before having a girls night! We had all gone to another place and while we had fun Hammer and Stain is a lot more affordable and they have a lot of craft variety. I love they have different projects from door mats to all sizes of signs. And they are priced accordingly. While I love my larger projects it is also nice to have some smaller things to do. I won this class on Facebook, but we had just been talking about picking a night to come. Before leaving we checked out the future projects room and there was some fun stuff! I know I want to do some smaller items for my 3 tier tray and my friend saw a cool football she wants to do. The location is perfect! They have their own parking lot. There were 3 large tables and our projects were there waiting for us. You sign up online and pick a project that they will have for the different classes. I have such a hard time deciding, but love the sign I chose! I went with paint instead of stain and love that I can get help even though I have done it before. It's nice to have someone there to help with color choices. I am bad about using too much paint so it was good Mansa was there to guide us! I am always the one who ends up with paint on me. Of course it washed off, or I would have teal fingers today. I love seeing the other projects and really like the paint wall so you can choose colors and stains. They have a website and a Facebook you can follow! I always recommend connecting on FB so you can keep up with all their classes and events. They have a fun Valentines day class where you make a tray and decorate cookies! Our plan is to do a St. Patrick's day class with friends. I can't wait to see all the upcoming classes. It's fun to actually make decor for your house or give as gifts and I am really glad we found Hammer & Stain!

There are plenty of paid parking lots and street parking available around the area. Keep in mind that street parking is free on Sundays. Communication is outstanding, with reminder e-mails, detailed maps on how to find the studio, where to park and after your class instrutions on applying the grout. But let's get to the classes. Currently this location "only" offers Turkish Mosaic Lamp workshops. However, you can choose your type of lamp, or just a globe or candleholder. Entirely up to you and your budget. It is not cheap, but neither are the materials needed. You will be seated at a tablel with seemingly endless mosaic glass options in so many great colors, it's going to be tough to choose a color combination. There are a few suggestions on their website as far as color combinations go. And of course you will need to decide what type of pattern you will be creating. Another tough decision. You will get a two-sided sheet with various patterns you could follow, or you can feel free to create your own. Our instructor was Kurt, a most patient man, as I dragged about a dozen of folks with me as usual and there were a couple of other folks besides our group and with that every last seat was taken. He answered question after question and refilled bead and glass shapes continuously. Showed us how to glue things in place, made suggestions, helped here and there with project gone awry and somehow still managed to share a bit about his home country of Turkey. There are little lit platforms where you can check what your lamp will look like when completed, and also an actual lamp you can hold your masterpiece to and get a better idea. Once you are done with your pattern, you get to create your own mix of tiny glass beads and apply those in all the 'free' spaces. then you are done with studio time. You are given grout and instructed on how to apply this once your project has reasted at least 12 hours. (you will also get an e-mail the next day, reminding you and a link for the instructions again). You will also get your lamp part , if you chose to make a lamp, and the bulb to go with it. All is neatly in a nice sturdy bag so you can add your globe and your grout to it also and have it all together in one place. Highly recommend this experience and I am hoping that they will add some of the different workshops that are offered at other locations. Fingers crossed.
