What a strange location…read more Despite being located in a large mall and near the centre of a major intersection (Hurontario/Bovaird), this Chapters location seems oddly out-of-the-way. Maybe it's the fact that a lot of the land isn't built up around it, maybe it was because it was nighttime, or maybe it was because the crowds I thought would be at the event I attended weren't present - whatever the case, it was a surprisingly-enjoyable experience. This was one of the rare times when I attended an event here in both a professional and personal capacity. I went out to cover a book being launched by federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh... and I also went to get my book signed, as I'm all about the bookstore experience for signing events. What I noticed walking into this location it's that, even thought it's a "chain" site for the brand, it's the little details that set this location apart. The Starbucks is fully-integrated within the store (no security scanners like the Square One location), and it's sort-of encased by bookshelves around half the chairs, which makes it much easier to sit and enjoy a drink or talk with someone in peace if you're so inclined. The kids' section is the biggest I've seen anywhere outside the Yonge/Bloor location, and I was actually a bit surprised that this site focuses a little more on style over substance, via a central "mezzanine" area". That's not to say it's lacking in books - not by a long shot - but the setup was appreciated. Service was fantastic, with a handful of female staffers at the checkout asking me if I was attending the event without my prompting, and were very friendly when I bought a copy of the book afterwards. I ended up sitting through the whole thing, and was impressed by the staff's management of the lineup and the groups going up to sign. (PROTIP: There's an older woman who attends these events, who sports long, scraggly hair and has a wiry build, who's jumped the line on at least two occasions, having done the same thing at the Sally Field signing event in downtown Toronto. Keep a look out for her if she comes back. She's a wily one.) In the end, I was very pleased to attend this location, and getting a bro-shake from Singh (along with a photo) was worth the price of getting up there. I was actually a bit disappointed with the crowd - there weren't nearly as many people as I was expecting (blame the Leafs playoff game), and the line moved exceptionally quick. There is a Dollarama in the plaza and a Walmart. There is also a Starbucks inside this Chapters. I like the books and non-book items that you can buy here. There was a lot of selection for Valentine's day such as women's scarves, adorable tea cups, coffee mugs, cookies, and other knick knacks that you don't need but just want to buy. It's a good place to pick up presents. They have a great selection of journals at this location. Some of the staff is a bit stand offish but others are friendly. I do like this Chapters location though.

On my last couple of tries, I had to settle for things that had way better alternatives online, but they won't let you pick up at a store, and I'm all about avoiding the wait times you pay shipping for. I needed a daily planner. I was looking for one that went more than one year. They had a display sign saying that section was that, but it was 16 month planners with 4 months already past. I scrounged and found only one expensive option that didn't even have daily pages after 2025, only monthly overviews. I broke down and bought it because I was tired of looking online and in-store for what I was after. Lesson learned. Try Staples first next time. I like to browse while I'm there. I had to investigate the whole store to find where they moved everything. That's all fine, but some of the shelves are too high for the usual tags, and some are not up against walls so again, no clear signage. As I browsed the puzzle selection, which is pretty good in terms of selection, I encountered yet another obstacle with lack of pricing. Some of the boxes were properly labeled with price tags, but the one I really liked had nothing. That whole section had no tags on any of the boxes. I analyzed every side and edge of the box to see if it had an MSRP price printed. Nope. I also browsed the "fluff" merch throughout the store, as it's generally cute. Not cute enough to justify the prices most of these things command. $9 for a small box (20 pcs) of small size children's bandages? Get them from IKEA. I'd say the redeeming feature is the staff who have been serving me lately. It's OK sometimes if you're in for something you already know they have in stock. Otherwise, you have maybe a 50/50 chance of a successful trip.

My not entering this store was a wise choice. Blackwing pencils are special in that they use high-quality graphite that rarely breaks. It is made of incense-cedar wood that makes sharpening it easy. There's a rectangular eraser on top, likely for flair. It's still crazy expensive for a pencil! If you are looking for a fancy writing instrument or quality paper, this store is for you. I went on the Black Friday sale and selected a board game to be delivered to a store. As it was a gift, I didn't want the recipient to accidentally open it when it arrived at my house. After hearing nothing on the supposed day of delivery, I called the store. They said it was in transit and would arrive in a couple days. I can only guess this was wishful thinking. 8 days later, I called online customer service. I waited on hold for 40 minutes. This is where the total gong-show begins: It was never even shipped. Supposedly, it's "in stock" online, but they just can't ship it. "Why?" you may ask. Well I suppose that's just one of the many mysteries of life. The cynic in me thinks they boosted their Black Friday sale with things they don't actually have. Which is illegal, by the way. It's against the Consumer Protection Act to have false sales. I tried navigating their website's "Chat With Us" feature to get some help. It's automated and entirely broken. It asks for your order number and your postal code and then just...quits. At least I know Indigo's AI will never contribute to the Skynet future from the Terminator movies. This thing is dumber than rope. It does literally nothing but waste your time. Which I'm realizing is probably the point. As to my experience on the phone with a real human after all that holding time: The CSR online assured me the issue would escalated. She said I would get an email in 2 hours confirming this was being dealt with. 48 hours after that, I still hadn't been contacted. I called back. I waited on hold for an hour and then they closed and I was disconnected. So, I woke up early and called them as soon as they opened on their time. 6 am my time. 20 min of hold. Then I was told that the issue was escalated, but that escalating it means I'll be contacted in 7 to 10 business days!!! Will they ship the thing they supposedly have? God only knows. Will it go out of stock while I wait? Probably. They are still selling it on their online store despite being unable to actually send it to one of their stores. This isn't a new product that is hard to get. It's been around for years. Will I get it before Christmas? Lol. Unlikely. I think what IS likely is that they'll try and refund me and they won't honour their sale. Just a giant waste of my time and energy. It's back up to $70 and I supposedly got 30% off. I can't stress enough that this isn't the fault of the people at this store. This is on Indigo's terrible online portal, pathetic customer service, and seemingly fraudulent business practices.
