I encourage you to seek one of them out immediately. Are they gone? Good. Now that the D-Bags have left, I can tell you about Stephen Knight, and Knight Studios looks to serve people who are serious about body art. I do not mean snobs or elitists. I do mean people who fully understand the life-long commitment they make when one decides to get a tattoo. As a result, Stephen and Alex take the proper time, professional approach, and trained input to ensure their clients have the best experience possible. Earlier this year I moved to Washington State. As a result, I waited months until I was in Chicago again to have Stephen tattoo me. To me, it was more important to receive a tattoo by someone whom I trust me than receive the immediate gratification of having the piece completed. I do have a quick example of my experience at Knight Studios. I brought Stephen several ideas I had for tattoos and where I wanted them placed. Stephen took the time to create stencils, discuss the realities of each suggestion, and work with me to find the best possible design, size, and location of each piece. I've been to a couple of places with my idea, that has been a pet project/labor of love for almost 10 years, and Stephen was the first to actually see it the way I saw it, and run with it in a way that I really loved. If you're looking for a hipster type tattoo, or looking for some old school flash piece - he could probably do it with this eyes closed (but hipster tat factories are a dime a dozen around Chicago). But if you want art, real fucking art, take it to him. So far he has taken the time to sit with me, go over the artwork, and really understand where I am coming from with it - and it gives me great confidence in his abilities. I will check back in after my first sitting. I just had my second sitting with Stephen on my arm piece and am blown away with how amazing this thing looks already. He took one of my favorite pieces of comic art and added a touch of realism to it and it is amazing. Alex worked on an existing piece for a family member, and made what was essentially a garbage tattoo look like a well crafted complete piece. I had the pleasure of getting a nice back piece done by artist Suerte. I came in not really knowing what I wanted. I told him I wanted something on my spine and I gave him an idea. With that idea, he created something very beautiful in a short amount of time. The second tattoo I got done here was a thigh piece. This time, I worked with the apprentice, Ceci. Even though she is new to the tattoo game, she has amazing skill and great attention to detail. She was able to create something beautiful with the idea that I gave her. He worked with my husband and me over a period of several weeks to make sure our tattoos were exactly what we wanted, and that we understood the importance of aftercare. For example, we went in to meet Bob a couple of weeks before we were going on vacation. When we mentioned that, he asked if we were going to be swimming, which we were, in the ocean and hotel hot tubs. He told us to come back for the tattoos after vacation--salt water and/or chlorine is not good for tattoos. He was more concerned about a good outcome for us and our tattoos than making money immediately. That said a lot! He is a talented and meticulous artist and really took his time positioning the decals so we could see exactly what we were getting. I would definitely recommend Bob to anyone looking to get a tattoo, but especially newbies like us. I am 54 years old and appreciated his patience and humor.
