DO NOT GO HERE!!!! Worst experience at a tattoo shop in my entire life, and I have over 10 tattoos. I drove 4 hours from Michigan. As soon as I got there it was SO unprofessional at the shop, they smoke inside and it's filthy dirty. 30 minutes into my tattoo "SHRED" took off his gloves to break up a fight outside (so unprofessional) and does not finishing my tattoo. I felt so unsafe and scared for my life, especially after putting my trust in an artist I've contacted them multiple times to get my deposit back and they refuse to answer me. Save your time, your money, and your skin from this TERRIBLE awful place. And potentially from an unsafe situation. I found someone to do my tattoo in Michigan, but now I've spent $200 in deposits and you can see in the pics how terrible the work is. I honestly believe that it was a blessing in disguise. His work is trash compared to my new artist. Nobody had ever reached out to me about this. read more

A true professional. I went to Shred because I was referred by a friend who had a portrait tattoo done by him that looked amazing. I contacted Shred through his website and he responded back right away. My mother recently passed and I wanted a portrait of her done on my forearm so Shred explained the process and was very kind and understanding about my loss and how he could help me to honor my mother. I went in for my appointment and I really felt like Shred cared and was determined to make sure my tattoo was everything I needed it to be. He explained he had been a tattoo artist for 30 years and it showed. His knowledge and ability to answer and explain every question I had made me feel at ease with choosing him. During the duration of my appointment he had a way of making me feel like I was all that mattered. The portrait turned out amazing and healed beautifully and I'm beyond happy. I was a few minutes late which I had texted and told him I would be. But got there 15 min after sceduled appointment. He said it would be 20 min while he finished someone up. But then he didn't tattoo us until 2 hours later. ALSO he charged WAY more than I would have EVER expected and considering this is my fifth tattoo, very dissatisfied Since I can't reply! I'll just add on here MOST of our wait time was you outside with what seemed like your friends and I may be young but I definitely know enough about tattoos as I said I already had 4. None of which were over $80 and three of the five are bigger and very well done. And I understand"big city Chicago" things go up in price. And I considered leaving and a wish I would have. I have had a few done here. I am really pleased with Shred's and the artist. I have 13 already (not all done here) but I can say with confidence that I totally trust the artist. Although I see other artist for a lot less expensive (such as house tattoo artist), I totally think you get what you pay for. Yeah, they are now tattooing outside in the streets, BUT WHY take a chance on hepatitis or other diseases. Go to places, such as Shred's and be safe and know you are paying for quality. This studio is the best! If you stop in ask for Shred. He has done all but one of my tattoos and I honestly couldn't be happier! My first tattoo was done at another shop and it looks horrible. After that experience I decided to check out a bunch of different shops. I had an idea that I needed custom drawn that I wanted to be great. To my surprise a lot of tattoo artists don't draw in this city or if they did draw they only offered a specific style. Shred is probably the only well rounded artist in the city. 2 weeks after my fiancee passed away, July 17th or so I went back to Shred's to get a tribute for my angel. I was extremely indecisive , initially wanting to get a portrait of him on my back but I changed my mind and decided to go with a key lock heart with text in it. The text I came up with myself and used a text generator to come up with that perfect styled text for my tattoo.The layout of this one also included a skeleton key thru the key lock heart with the text. The entire design the artist came up with himself and I fell in love with it immediately. I decided to drop the key as the tattoo would extend from the underside of my wrist to the front which I didn't want. I solely wanted the tattoo to be on the underside of my wrist only. The tattoo artist was the same gentleman that did my Sally tattoo and my deceased fiancee's Jack's tattoo on April 1, 2010. I had a wonderful experience with him as he did fantastic work and we talked about my previous experience with him when I had came in with my fiancee several months prior to his death. I don't even know where to begin. Shred made my first tattoo experience wonderful and enjoyable. I had no idea what to do, but Shred was super accommodating and made himself available to help me through the entire way. When I first decided I wanted a tattoo, i did a ton of research and sent out some e-mails to a few different artists. Some artists took over a week to respond, and all of them took more than 4 days. Except one. Shred answered my e-mail in less than 12 hours, and told me to come into so we could talk about what i wanted to do. I had a vague idea of what I wanted and some text I wanted incorporated, however, for the most part, I was kinda lost. Shred came up with the an amazing design that blew me out of the water. His work and portfolio speaks for itself. It's absolutely phenomenal. Look it up. However, there are a lot of great artists, and what sets Shred apart, is his customer service and making sure that I was comfortable and satisfied every step of the way. I can't recommend him enough and will go to him for all my future ink. read more

Make sure that the Artist spell checks for you, do not assume they are spelling what you want correct. I requested Carpe Diem, he mispelled it Carpe Deim, I cant blame him totally as I approved the design, however I assumed he had checked. He was on the computer for several minutes after I submitted my request and had overheard the senior artist mention to him to make sure it was spelled correct. I just assumed he did it. The mispelling is one thing and shame on me for assuming and approving. The tattoo itself is bad. The lettering is bad, there is color missing in some spots and he "went outside the lines" in others. When I went back in the next day the shop owner and Mikey seemed to have little interest in helping me with a fix idea of sorts. I will not go back and will reseach my artist before going forward with the coverup. read more

The best Chicago tattoo shop? Unequivocally yes. Shred is an artist first; he happens to convey his art through tattooing. But I've seen his paintings too. Wow. We'll save that for another review. I've been to a few tattoo shops in Chicago. They just don't measure up. I'm probably biased after the tattoo I received from Shred. It's a full sleeve of unadulterated ink. He covered up my ex girlfriends name with a biomechanical tattoo that's larger than life. I've never received so much attention from people in regards to my tattoos. His tattoo shop is in Chicago on the near south side. And, the tattoo shop is so spotless you can eat off the floor (and I did). Update: James left the shop (ah, the life of an artist), but Shred, always the pro, picked up right where he left off. He did an incredible pin-up on me, and I donated my old pin-up book to the shop as a result. I love it, and I can't wait to go back to see Shred again to finish my sleeve.
