I have used this company for nearly all the window coverings in my house, over a period of 30+ years, when then they started in Boulder. They have always done stellar work and carry high quality products. Unfortunately one of our Hunter Douglas shades of the mid 90s had a failed cord due to its extended use in a bedroom. When I called to see if it could be restrung, I learned the sad news that they cannot, due to federal safety laws regarding the child strangulation prevention measures of current manufacture. A good thing for children of course, but a complication for homeowners. We went out to their facility and worked with one of their designers and chose a shade similar enough in color and style to fit in our home. We ordered the product and waited about 4 weeks until it arrived. We picked it up and planning to install it ourselves, having done so for some of the older ones in the past. As it turned out, the method of install is so different now, the tools required and the shape of the brackets now also different, we were unable to do it. I called the designer and asked if we could have an installer after all. She contacted installation and got me the contact to set it up. Today the installer got here, a true professional, on time and with tools in hand, had it done in under 20 minutes. Nothing like having the skills and the tools and the height to do it with ease. We felt very fortunate and the price to do this was very reasonable. I will continue to use Innovative Openings for all of our window coverings. One more note, if you do have an older Hunter Douglas window shade product in your home with any small plastic fasteners or pull tabs for the old cord system that have cracked with age or high altitude sun exposure like ours, those parts can be ordered directly from Hunter Douglas online. It is simple to replace most of these parts. The parts are free and I was only charged a minimal shipping fee. I was able to get about 7 pieces. I was able to match colors for past products up to nearly 20 years old. I did those replacements myself. I even switched one to the same color but a different shape to better match the older blinds in the adjacent room. It's the internal cord system on the older blinds that they can no longer re-string. If you want to prevent replacing, be very gentle on them as they age. read more

We bought Hunter Douglas blinds from Innovative Openings 15 years ago. They've lasted in good condition. I recently brought in two for repair, because they are an EasyRise no-cord model that had lost their tension. Everyone I worked with was very competent and professional, from store reception, to designer to installer. The designer knew the products, and was receptive to my preferences for price-range, style and color, and guided me to the best options for the situation. Even the timing was great -- I requested a fast turn-around on the second blind, since I had guests coming, and they did it -- they squeezed me in on an already busy day, so that I had a proper window covering when my guests arrived. I'm insane about my sleep and know that having a dark room was most important to me. I searched and did a lot deep diving into what type of blinds would block out all light and give me the best rest. After speaking with some of the customer service people, I landed on a spring loaded Insolroll Shade that was middle of the price point but has been holding up so well nearly 2 years later. Super happy with the service of Innovative Openings, and look forward to ordering more shades as the time comes. I rarely post a review on Yelp but I felt the need to say something. The sales manager Kevin was completely rude and dishonest with me. My order was a simple drop-ship of a window treatment I had seen at a friend's house. The treatment was this: A glass garage door with a rollerblind affixed at the inside top of the door, with chain guides down the side, and a little extra bead-chain so that when the door is up (with the roller blind all the way up), you'd have just a bit of excess bead chain hanging down. Our garage door is 8ft tall and stows above at an angle at 10 feet. And he said that would be a choking hazard for children. Really? A choking hazard 10 feet off the ground? I use all kinds of vendors and subcontractors and this is one of the worst experiences I've had. Kevin gave me 4 different reasons for why they would not sell me what I wanted, and never would be honest for why that was. First it was because they didn't recommend installing it to the wall because the garage door would hit it (not at all what I was asking for - who would want that?), second it was because with COVID they are behind (of course, everyone is, I get that), third it was because they are only doing local installs (then why, after 10 emails back and forth was that never mentioned since they knew my location from the first call?), and lastly, that the treatment would be a choking hazard for children.. Really? Then why did they install it at a friend's house? Kevin's answer: We shouldn't have done that. A short perusal of the other reviews on this page confirms that I am not alone. I had fancy blinds from this shop installed in all the windows in my home in 1999. They look wonderful and operate smoothly and reliably. Since then I have had cords break about five times, the latest time being today. Each time the repair department fixed my blinds free of charge! Think about that - almost twenty years later and they still warranty their products. That, in my view, is amazing in this day and age of planned obsolescence and up-selling. Service technicians have been out multiple times and are always concerned about getting the job done right. To be Clear I only got an estimate from Innovative openings and this review is about the negotiation. I asked to have the contract modified in two ways: 1. To set a time limit of 6 weeks to schedule the installation. The lead time on my estimate was 4 weeks. However the contract is clear that this order is non-cancel-able, given it is a custom order. I understand that, but when I pointed out that this basically left their end open-ended, meaning they could take 6 months and I have no legal recourse, they refused to changed this part of the contract. And by they I mean management. They're fine you paying thousands of dollars and them bearing no risk at all. 2. The specifically exclude the warranty of merchantability. (See C.R.S. 4-2-314.). To be clear there is nothing illegal about this, and it is allowed under the law in Colorado. However you should ask yourself before going with this company, why don't they believe in the product they are selling? Because the warranty of merchantability essentially means that the goods they are selling you will work like they are supposed too, and if they don't then the seller has to remedy that problem. So if you refuse to honor that implied warranty, and in fact specifically say you exclude it, that means you don't believe in the product they sell you. They want to sell you the product and then hand you off to manufacturer. So if you're fine with innovative openings refusing to negotiate with you, then by all means, sign up with them. If not then I recommend you look elsewhere. The only reason I gave them 2 stars was because the sales person Ken was very professional, nice, prompt and my wife and I enjoyed working with him. But you're just a number to the company and not a customer. read more

We purchased an awning from Innovative Openings 11 years ago. During the pandemic I noticed the fabric had ripped some and it was less than 10 years at that time and still under warranty. I called and spoke with Barry and he said he would get back with me which he never did. I let it go because of the age. Then the wind caught the awning one day and broke one of the arms. I had a terrible time getting anyone to return my calls. I did not expect that to be still under warranty. I wanted to see if it could be fixed. They said they do not fix the awnings because they never work right after that and they wouldn't even come and look at it. I used this shop previously and was very satisfied with customer service. However, today I took my hunter douglas cellular shade in to be repaired - just as I had other times. I have to drive 55 minutes to reach the store, but since I was happy with them previously, I didn't mind doing so. I am also remodeling and need new shades for windows in our recently finished room and had hoped to get a consultation. However, after waiting for help I was informed that the store no longer repairs blinds unless bought at that shop. I told the service person that I had driven 55 minutes to get there and he said "oh". So I returned to my car and drove back home in rush hour traffic. It was definitely my mistake for not calling ahead to confirm that their service had not changed. However, it was short-sighted of the store to lose a sale by not fixing my blind or asking if I needed to purchase other blinds. I will go elsewhere where I can find complete service. read more

I have found this business does not live up to what it says it will do. They would not honor our installation. They called and left a message at 4:30 the day before to say they were not coming. I immediately called back and received no one. Finally after much calling I was told they had no idea when they would install my blinds. When I asked for a refund they refused. After much strife, they finally installed my blinds, into a brand new house that no one lived in. Their products arrived broken and they have refused to honor the warranty. They refuse to come to my house because an employee stated I was rude. I was rude because they don't care about their clients. They refused to call me back when I left multiple messages after they said not honor their contract. They had no solutions to the installation problem and now they refuse me service. I paid in full during the ordering process because I was assured by my builder how good this company was. Innovative Openings had my money and they didn't care about customer satisfaction. The installation took less than an hour. I have to believe they did a lousy job installing them which is why they are broken. I would not use them and I will also notify Hunter Douglas that they will not honor the warranty. read more

Although, the product is good (but overpriced) I did not have a good experience with their team - especially when it came to service and billing, and I would not recommend using Innovative Openings, nor will I use them in the future. It was a bit of a hard sell when I was looking at shades -- which took me aback also. I kept asking for one product (a simple roll up shade and kept getting the answer that the shades with cords were better - even though I did not want shades with cords)? Do your research and you can find similar products elsewhere (again at a much much lower price). Their billing system is antiquated and no invoice or receipts were ever emailed or mailed to me -- which resulted in confusion as to when and how much the final payment was and when this was due. The only documentation I received was at the time of the sales agreement (and this indicated all products I was interested in, not only the product I ended up purchasing). This was also handwritten. Their billing clerk, Carol, was extremely rude when questioned about this -- as she charged my credit card (I had given her two, so without asking which one I would like to pay the final amount on -- she took it upon herself to select one). She was sarcastic, belittling and unprofessional. She also indicated that she had phoned me a few weeks prior -- but I never received her message -- her response was 'maybe your phone doesn't work.' Really? As Colorado continues to grow, it is apparent that businesses can get away with poor customer service as the demand for products is so high. Again, do your research as there are several other more accommodating companies out there. Go elsewhere and receive the quality of service a customer deserves. read more

I helped my sister choose window shades for her home in Lafayette. Her and hubby wanted electronic shades to go with their fancy new apple phones. We went to a few places before Innovative Openings, but they didn't have showrooms where we could actually see and operate the shades. My sister's neighbor used this place and said they had a nice showroom to visualize and use the products, so we headed over. Innovative Openings has a large selection so we spent a lot of time in their showroom (1 hour). When we arrived we got a quick tour of the place. There was so much to choose from so to help us narrow it down we were asked: what is the most important thing the shades should do? My sister wanted shades that dropped from the top, let light in but keeps privacy. We spent most of our time with those products. The main person who helped us in the showroom was friendly and had a good sense of humor. The environment was really casual, but it was clear they wanted to help us find the perfect product--everything is customizable. They were on the higher end of prices--but the quality of shades is great and the service is exceptional. They use their own installers, who have been working there for a long time (instead of contracting the installation out). In-home repairs are free for the first year, then after that still free if you bring it in yourself. A salesperson came over the next day to let us look at the samples in the different rooms and did measurements. My sis paid 50% up front and 50% after installation was complete (they use the same credit card and don't send a bill). The shade instillation happened three weeks later. My sis said two people came over and it took about three hours for the whole house. She skyped me and showed me the fancy electronic stuff :) It looks awesome. I don't live in CO, but if I did I would also use Innovative Openings. read more

They did all our blinds and most look good, some leave bigger gaps on the sides than we expected and at the two year mark we've had a couple go bad. One blind's motor failed and they came out and lost the power cord into the wall because the worker didn't tape or retain it, reaquiring drilling holes into a valence and wall to find the cord he lost. Then they charged my wife's credit card another $135 without speaking to us to get approval. Avoid these guys. They seem great up front but service is poor and billing without motivation seems fraudulent no?! read more

I ordered a new canvas from Innovative Openings for my large retractable awning and also had to have my awning removed to be re-installed after my roof was replaced. Jason and his crew from Innovative Openings did a great job removing the awning. The re-install required extra hardware because my original roof was shingle and my new roof is tile. Jason and crew determined the best approach (always keeping me informed). They had to make two trips to the local hardware store and spent an extra hour on the re-install. My new awning looks fantastic and is positioned even better than before. They gave me good tips on how to increase the "life" of the new fabric. I reached out to the company to tell them how impressed I was and that I fully expected to pay for the extra hardware and for the extra time. They told me they were glad that I was satisfied with everything, and did not add anything to the original invoice. I can't recall the last time I had such great service like this from any type of company. read more

We selected Innovative Openings to help us with solar shades for our new office building last year. Their team was extremely professional and helped us with everything from the type of shade to the best color and fabric type. We have a lot of windows in our office and the sun can be very harsh at certain times of the year so we needed to select a shade that would block the sun and help keep the office cool. When we had an issue with the sun still shining through the new solar blinds, Innovative Openings was very receptive to working with us to find a solution to the problem. They sent a member of their customer service department to our office to determine what the best course of action was and then they worked with us to help change the blinds to something that would be more effective. They could not have been more helpful and responsive to our needs. We would highly recommend them and would not hesitate to use them again in the future. read more

When I first bought solar window shades from IO, a good salesman came out, measured perfectly and followed my order, which came in on time. He checked on installation and corrected an error. The shades stood up well with no repairs needed. I'd have given a 5 star review then, no problem. When I moved I again called IO and was fortunate to work with the same person . . . but then I went over to the Denver store to pick up some handles to replace the ultra flimsy ones that kept breaking on cellular blackout shades. We now have some broken ones permanently glued and taped to the shades. Then one shade broke, interior mechanism, same grade of plastic maybe. So it's $88 for technician to just drive over, maybe more once repair is done? Way too high, on principle. So had to drive the shade from southeast Denver suburbs to what I learned was a far-flung and only remaining "Denver area" office/repair facility in an industrial park around Broomsfield/Louisville--then drove back again to pick up--2 round trips through traffic, construction, low signage on roads. Wasted 2 days on these drives, one off work for my husband. Learned the Denver store had closed! People are polite enough when you get them, but phones rarely pick up at this remaining Louisville facility. My old salesman said he'd retire and probably has. I feel it was a irresponsible to close a major location without providing a free or low-cost floating technician to regularly visit, repair and transport materials to and from the repair facility, or service the Denver area 2-3 times per week. The other issue is the quick breakage of low quality materials provided for premium custom prices for purchase and repair. I'm hoping this review will encourage corrections in materials and a return to more reasonable customer service levels. read more
