Horrific, Incompetent, and Invasive -- Never Again, CarMax…read more We are not new to online car buying. We have completed 10 successful transactions with Carvana, so we came into this process informed, realistic, and patient. Unfortunately, buying a vehicle through CarMax was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. We only considered CarMax because they had a vehicle that met our criteria. The process appeared straightforward--until it wasn't. Unlike Carvana, which delivers to your home, CarMax delivers to a hub. For us, that hub was Rogers, Arkansas. The vehicle was initially located in Illinois. Through the app, we watched the car leave Illinois, arrive in St. Louis... and then mysteriously end up in Oklahoma City, where it sat. And sat. And sat. For days, there were no updates. When we called CarMax (since there is no local number, only a national call center), we were told logistics "wasn't updating" and that they didn't know why the vehicle wasn't moving. At one point, we were even told the car would not be transported to Northwest Arkansas until the truck was full of other vehicles headed there. Completely unacceptable. Frustrated, I went into the store and spoke directly with a manager. Even then, no one could give a clear, simple answer as to why the vehicle was stranded in Oklahoma City. An "investigation" was started. In the end, the vehicle sat in Oklahoma City for 10 days, and it took 16 days total from purchase to arrive at the destination hub. When we were finally called to see the vehicle, we were appalled. The truck was filthy, covered in road grime, and had scratches that were not disclosed in the listing. The sales manager--who had been involved from the beginning--was at least transparent and reassuring, promising the vehicle would be properly cleaned and detailed. Two days later, we returned. The vehicle did look significantly better, and we agreed to move forward with the purchase. That's when the experience somehow got worse. We were trading in a paid-off vehicle. This should have been simple. Instead, CarMax managed to take the convenience of online car buying and turn it into the exact frustration everyone dreads at a traditional dealership. The registration process was long, tedious, and inefficient. We were told we could not use a credit card and opted to write a check. At that point, we were instructed to pull up our personal bank account and show our balance. This was a shocking and unacceptable invasion of privacy. From walking in the door to leaving, we spent over two hours in the building. After weeks of delays, misinformation, poor communication, subpar vehicle condition, and invasive financial scrutiny, we can say without hesitation: We will never use CarMax again. There are far better options for online car buying that actually respect your time, your privacy, and their own process. CarMax is not one of them. Now for the good: the manager (Xavier) that opened the investigation had the best communication and did everything in his power to better our situation. He is probably the only reason we kept the deal going. We were then handed over to Nick who helped close the deal. Nick too was amazing and was the one literally buffing out scratches and assuring us we would be taken care of that our experience was a one off. In the end, we are glad we went forward with our purchase but are certain we will not use Carmax again.
