The Other Side Academy is changing people's lives....literally. This facility is full run by…read morestudents and graduates-folks who have made bad choices (self proclaimed) and have decided to turn their lives around. They don't take money from the government or accept insurance and it's totally free for students to participate. (In fact, the longer you stay, you have an opportunity to make money while you're here.) It's not a traditional rehab center-in fact, they don't call it a rehab center at all. It's a home where students commit to live, contribute and abide by incredibly strict behavior protocol for not just months, but years. Their success rate is off the charts and students who graduate from the program are given tools to succeed at life, not just sent on their way. The funding for the Academy is mostly self-funded from their social enterprises (moving company, thrift stores, donut shops, etc.) which are all run by the students. The curriculum is rigorous with accountability and humility as the main theme that runs throughout. It's not for the faint of heart and they don't sugar coat anything, but if people are ready to make a significant change in their lives, this place will help them.

They have had good experiences in student government, theater, swim team, soccer, cross country, track, and water polo, plus a quality education with AP classes/tests/credits, college concurrent enrollment classes, vocational training and internships. Most of the principals have been excellent; same with faculty, staff and other administrators. They offer a variety of classes, service clubs, teams and programs such as tennis, golf, baseball, basketball, drama, band, choir, etc. They have the most refugee students in the state with great peer tutoring and faculty assistance. The campus is huge. They have the largest high school auditorium west of the Mississippi. It's not, however, the most up-to-date. Their football field, training room, and baseball field are state-of-the-art. They have three big parking lots, a swimming pool, tennis courts, art studios, music and theater rooms. Beginning the 2016 school year, 9th graders will be at Cottonwood for the first time. They have been 4A and 5A.

The English Skills Learning…read moreCenter commits itself to providing free English tutoring with trained instructors to immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers. They specialize in practical reading, writing, and speaking skills. For students, they have emerging and intermediate programs, as well as classes that focus on parenting, citizenship and workplace English. In April I attended the ESLC for training to become a ESL teacher. For $50 they provide a 2-weekend training at their headquarters in South Salt Lake; complete with heart-string jerking stories of their students, role playing real-life scenarios, creating a lesson plan and a swanky orange tote bag. The staff and mentors are amazing and I completed the program feeling a lot of responsibility in my new teaching role, but well-equipped and with an ample support system. They also encourage you to sit in on a class to get hands-on experience. The staff at ESLC opened my mind to what a impact confidence in language makes. From a parent who wants to ask questions their child's parent-teacher conferences, to an individual that wants a more fulfilling career.

We also provide free citizenship preparation classes, to help individuals prepare for the US naturalization test & learn English. Students can register for class at the English Skills Learning Center Office on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. We also offer opportunities to become a volunteer teacher in one of our English classrooms. Potential volunteers can apply on the English Skills Learning Center website (eslcenter.org).
