She's a pro - patient, clear in her exercise instructions, encouraging (yet firm), and flexible with some of our last minute scheduling issues (Niu Valley is quite a commute from Moanalua). The facility is right behind Jack in the Box on Kalanianaole Hwy; the light at the left turning lane can try your patience. Parking during lunch hour can be a little challenging; fortunately it is very large parking lot shared by other businesses. They do a nice job with scheduling/changing your appointments, and the email reminders really do help (as does the $50 penalty if you cancel in less than 24 hours). All in all, the experience of going through this form of PT along with the physical exertion without impact to your joints is definitely worthwhile!

About 20% of the session Kevin was writing notes about what just happened. Every 10th session was almost entirely spent recording measurements and strength of where I was at. I was told by Kevin that Medicare required this. I spoke to Medicare and was told that they do not require reports. I am approaching the 4th month of my recovery. This is the time when my strengthening is most important as I am limping from muscle weakness. Kevin has told me he is cutting my sessions from 2 to 1 session per week. I asked why and he told me that Medicare will not be approving 2 sessions. I asked Medicare about this. They referred me to page 48 of the Medicare Handbook which says if the Doctor prescribes 2 visits per week that is what will happen. Medicare does not challenge what a Doctor thinks is necessary. Attached are photos from the current Medicare Handbook that contradict what I was told by Ortho Sport. Even with this Ortho Sport still stands by their contradictory statements. I have found a different physical therapy provider who does NOT makeup rules. I also realize by what I have written above that my 1 hour session was "at best about 30 minutes of physical therapy". Many Physical Therapists offer websites or apps that show you videos of the suggested exercises to do. They also offer other options to help with your recovery. Ortho Sport merely prints out a sheet of paper. It is very hard to believe that Ortho Sport has 241 reviews and everyone is 5 stars. That is not likely considering life is not perfect. Please consider what I have written in making your decision. I have given the honest facts of my experience. Ortho Sport has stood by what Medicare said is not true even though it is in writing and told to me explicitly when I spoke with them.

When he asked me where would I like to have my pt, I was expecting him to refer me to the Queen's Healthcare Facility in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center but was taken back when he referred me to this place (located in the ground floor) of the building to the right of the Hi Kai 7-11/Boston Pizza building. My one hour long therapy was from 5-6pm 2x per week, then shortened to 1x week from early June to mid August. Martin, my therapist was very personable and knew his techniques and knew where my threshold of pain were and stopped before I screamed in pain. It came to a point in August where he told me that there was not much more he can do to relieve the pain, and said that I needed to go back to Dr. Morris. This was great in showing that their business wasn't trying to 'milk' the system for all they could, and I appreciate that ! Business hours were great to accommodate patients, as there was another person who had pt after mine ended at 6 pm. The reason for only 4 stars is that this office space is quite small, but looked larger than it was due to the numerous wall mounted mirrors. The waiting room is just a few feet to the room where pt is done, so whoever is waiting inside can hear the conversation going on, so what I usually did was just to wait outside until their session was pau. Long story short I really have a bad taste in my mouth from certain providers. I found them to be condescending and to position themselves as the authority, rather than evoking and collaborating with my wisdom and expertise on my own body. Also I find that people who are naturally thin tend to make a lot of assumptions about women who aren't naturally thin in terms of how fit we are. Your assumptions were wrong. However for Tara, she made me feel very seen and heard and took a far more collaborative approach. Additionally she stayed curious about what was going on and made some really crucial observations which lead to me seeking further medical tests and learning that in contrast to PT's diagnoses, I actually have osteoarthritis and a totally shredded up hip joint with multiple tears and degenerative cartilage at the most severe level someone can have. I wish I'd sought more testing sooner as I might have been able to intervene before the damage got this bad but super grateful to Tara for her insight and suggestions. She was amazing start to finish. So overall, mixed bag. I hope the other providers can take a more humble approach, recognizing the strengths and wisdom of their clients.

Sani welcomed me as soon as I walked in. He asked me what I wanted to focus on and we went to work. I get like 2+ massages a month, so I sort of know what I like. Sani was great. I told him I wanted my upper back, tops of shoulders, deltoid area, and left hip/glute. While he used great pressure on my upper back, I prefer much more pointed, focused, deep tissue massages where they dig into a knot to the point where you can feel the crunchy trigger point as it releases. Sani had a smoother, sweeping technique. He would press on trigger points to get them to loosen up a bit but wouldn't keep at it. I don't know anything about massage techniques but I wonder if this is because his speciality might be sports massage? Anyway, it was more than adequate and I left feeling relaxed but my shoulders were still a bit locked up when I left (to be fair to him, my shoulders are always ridiculously tight so they require a lot of attention). Why he gets 4 stars is because of his work on my deltoid area which I had previously injured and is still healing. He focused a lot of pressure and used his fingers to help break up whatever scar tissue or fascia or whatever. I definitely had greater range of movement in my shoulder after I left. Same for my glute medius/lower left back area. It's perennially tight and painful but Sani used a bit of compression, manipulation of my legs, and stretching to help loosen up my back. This is where he excelled as a therapist. My TL;DR is if you're an athlete and/or need to get specific parts of your body worked on due to injury, Sani is your man. He can help get that range of motion you lack back to your affected area. He reminds me of the sports massage therapists that works closely with a PT or chiropractor. I would trust him to get me back to competing in whatever sport I was in 100%. In terms of the run of the mill deep tissue/therapeutic massage. I thought he was still very good but not completely aligned with my preferences of smashing a trigger point into submission no matter how much pain it requires. Perhaps that's why this place is called Active Sports Massage. haha. Anyway, well worth the trip and the money. I'll be back when I'm on that side of the island.

After a week of pills, rest and stretching I was still in pain but somewhat mobile. A friend told my wife about Mati and she called for an appointment. About 15 minutes into the massage I was already feeling relief and when I left after an hour it was almost back to normal. 24 hours and one dose of Motrin later and I am typing this from Waimanalo beach where I have been (cautiously) swimming and enjoying the day pain free, Thanks again Mati!!

Admittedly, since moving into the Kaka'ako neighborhood, I've been spoiled by the short 2-mile drives from my home to Kapi'olani Medical Center, where my women's health care physicians are located. In the past, I've never had to travel any further than 8 miles to Kapi'olani Medical Center. However, because I was still recovering from my total knee replacement surgery, which was done in late July, I had to reschedule my annual September exam for my lady-bits to December. In June, when I called the women's health clinic to reschedule the yearly exam, the receptionist notified me that my GYN (Dr. Gary Kimoto) was transferring his practice to the Straub Benioff Medical Center - Hawaii Kai, and that scheduling patient visits past September wasn't available yet. The receptionist recommended that I call again in September to check availability for December. Of course, his office did inform me there were several other physicians within the Kapi'olani Women's Health Clinic who I could select for either an earlier appointment in October or November at the convenient Honolulu medical center, but, since I wasn't in a rush for an appointment and out of respect, I preferred to have Dr. Kimoto provide a referral. Anyway, I got the directions to this Hawai'i Kai Clinic from one of the receptionists, who gave succinct instructions to drive and turn left onto Lunalilo Home Road from Kalaniana'ole Highway, turn into the driveway and parking lot where the Taco Bell is located, and look towards the mountainside of the parking lot for the covered walkway. Fortunately, we had a 30-minute leisurely drive to East O'ahu during mid-morning, didn't encounter heavy traffic, and arrived 20 minutes before the anticipated check-in time. Upon entering the clinic, five receptionists were either handling phone calls or attending to walk-in patients. One of the friendly receptionists greeted me, and I informed her of my appointment time and provided her with my identification and medical insurance cards. She verified that all the information was on file and pointed towards the patient lobby on my left. I waited no longer than 15 minutes when Dr. Kimoto's nurse assistant, Victoria, came out to escort me to an examination room. While following her from the lobby to the exam rooms, I started to feel like I was in a labyrinth and did my best to look for clues that would lead me out. Unlike sitting in a cold examination room at the medical center while having my vitals taken and verifying my medical information, the exam room was comfortable, warm, and cozy. I was so relaxed that even my blood pressure and pulse rate, which are usually elevated due to "white coat syndrome," were at low levels like when I was an avid runner. LOL! If I lived in East O'ahu and needed convenient, compassionate, and quality health care with friendly service, I'd recommend this clinic. However, I don't know whether this clinic is equipped to handle major medical emergencies or procedures.

Most recently today I was adjusted by Dr. Hawkins, I had a tight/stuck middle of back that I was unable to stretch or roll out, she expertly diagnosed and fixed.
