My Dad's PCP recommended Aqua Therapy to help strengthen his leg muscles. OrthoSport in Niu Valley was one of the few options on the island; although it was a bit of commute, it's turned out to be a great choice. A customer's experience with such personalized service usually banks on their relationship with their therapist. In this case, we are fortunate to be aligned with Summer. She's a pro - patient, clear in her exercise instructions, encouraging (yet firm), and flexible with some of our last minute scheduling issues (Niu Valley is quite a commute from Moanalua). The facility is right behind Jack in the Box on Kalanianaole Hwy; the light at the left turning lane can try your patience. Parking during lunch hour can be a little challenging; fortunately it is very large parking lot shared by other businesses. They do a nice job with scheduling/changing your appointments, and the email reminders really do help (as does the $50 penalty if you cancel in less than 24 hours). All in all, the experience of going through this form of PT along with the physical exertion without impact to your joints is definitely worthwhile! read more

I WOULD NOT USE ORTHO SPORT-HERE IS WHY For everyone of my visits Kevin arrived 3 to 4 minutes late. Almost every visit was ended at least 5 minutes before the hour. About 20% of the session Kevin was writing notes about what just happened. Every 10th session was almost entirely spent recording measurements and strength of where I was at. I was told by Kevin that Medicare required this. I spoke to Medicare and was told that they do not require reports. I am approaching the 4th month of my recovery. This is the time when my strengthening is most important as I am limping from muscle weakness. Kevin has told me he is cutting my sessions from 2 to 1 session per week. I asked why and he told me that Medicare will not be approving 2 sessions. I asked Medicare about this. They referred me to page 48 of the Medicare Handbook which says if the Doctor prescribes 2 visits per week that is what will happen. Medicare does not challenge what a Doctor thinks is necessary. Attached are photos from the current Medicare Handbook that contradict what I was told by Ortho Sport. Even with this Ortho Sport still stands by their contradictory statements. I have found a different physical therapy provider who does NOT makeup rules. I also realize by what I have written above that my 1 hour session was "at best about 30 minutes of physical therapy". Many Physical Therapists offer websites or apps that show you videos of the suggested exercises to do. They also offer other options to help with your recovery. Ortho Sport merely prints out a sheet of paper. It is very hard to believe that Ortho Sport has 241 reviews and everyone is 5 stars. That is not likely considering life is not perfect. Please consider what I have written in making your decision. I have given the honest facts of my experience. Ortho Sport has stood by what Medicare said is not true even though it is in writing and told to me explicitly when I spoke with them. read more

I've been working with Cassidy, a medical fitness trainer, for just under 2 years now after getting diagnosed with a genetic condition that results in lifelong musculoskeletal challenges, including chronic pain. My physical therapist (PT, outside of Orthosport) is very impressed with the progress I've made with Cassidy because she incorporates my PT's recommendations into my workouts and adjusts every session according to what my body needs that day. My balance (which was embarrassingly poor when I first started training with Cassidy in 2023) has improved significantly and my daily pain level has gone down drastically! With my unique medical needs, it has been challenging to find a gym and a fitness trainer I can trust fully, particularly because I experienced recurrent injuries caused by working out for many years. Even though every workout still kicks my butt, I always look forward to seeing Cassidy because I never have to worry about getting injured and I know I'll feel so much better after our sessions. OrthoSport Hawaii is located in the Niu Valley Shopping Center in the corner next to Jack in the Box, West end. The entrance to sign in is on bottom floor. As you enter from the left side of the building you'll see the pool, check in is next to the pool. Upstairs is the gym area. I had sort of a pinch nerve on my lower right side glute area that was more annoying then painful. After talking to my Doctor I got an referral for PT, so why not check it out. I was assigned to Jensen and Corey on my first visit to assess my problem. They were Very professional, but still chill enough to make you feel at ease. They made me go through various movements and positions to narrow down the point of the problem. Overall Corey was my main therapist. I was given several strength and stretching exercises to do daily and an online account to track my progress at home. After about three visits and doing the exercises/stretching at home daily my issue went away, yes! I was approved for nine sessions by the insurance company. The remaining PT were more intense and concentrated on strengthen of the muscles around the problem area. It felt like I was back into the gym with a personal trainer and I really liked the workout. You either love going to PT or hate it with a passion. I've learned that even though your hurting and don't want to go, you should go. Ignoring the problem will only make things worse over time and might be too late when you do decide. Communication with your therapist is key and if you don't want to or can't do some of the exercises, tell them. They can modify or adjust it to help you. I just completed twelve weeks of personal training with Hannah Goltiao after rehabbing a torn rotator cuff, also at OrthoSport. I feel that I have met my goals of learning the proper form and mechanics for strength and resistance training for what is the beginning of a lifelong practice. I was referred to Esme Davis for therapy and I had a wonderful experience working with her. Esme was very professional, attentive to my concerns and needs. She was friendly and kind as well, excellent with her therapy recommendations and with assisting me during our sessions. With her guidance and therapy, my symptoms improved after the very first therapy session and so far, even after completing therapy, I am still doing very well, with resolution of my problem. Ok I've had 3 visits now and can make a real evaluation of the facility, personnel and quality of therapy here at OrthoSport Hawaii. My PT Therapist "Paris" is a fantastic, knowledgeable and great professional that motivates you toward attaining your potential. The facility is very clean, social distancing protocols are in place. Masks required by staff and patients. Hand sanitizer is readily available and the equipment and associated personnel effects tubs are sanitized before and after each client. There is a vast array of modern equipment and a wading pool to address all types of rehabilitation. I can feel the difference in my knee and legs already. I get a healthy dose of "Paris persuasion" as she helps me focus on the proper technique during my exercises without over doing it! (Review 7 of 2020) Ok, you know I'm bored when I'm hitting up all my "write a review" options list. Hehehe. Well, this is a hidden gem. Yeah well, they are literally hidden behind Jack in the crack at the front of Niu Valley. You need to park in front by Jack's & look kinda behind & in between Jack's building & the building with Cafe Asia. That 2 story building is OrthoSport Hawaii. If you're going to PT, you stay on the 1st floor & go to the left along the fence line for Jack's drive thru. You'll see a sign that says entrance on the wall. Go thru the gateway & turn right & walk thru the pool area to the front desk on the other side. The front desk peeps are always polite & friendly. I don't think I've ever seen them without a smile on their faces. It's nice seeing people actually enjoying their job & their coworkers. Anyways, I've been seeing my therapist, Devon, for almost 3 wks before the lockdown happened. He's been very helpful with showing me how to do some workouts to stretch out my arm. Come to find out I got Tennis Elbow from doing something at work. Hey! If you haven't had it before you would think, oh yeah, tennis elbow, no biggie, right? HA!! It's not as easy as one thinks to come back from this kinda injury. I thought I'd be back at work by beg-mid March. NOT!! I got injured at the end of January & been out since then. TL:DR - Ron was super caring and helpful. He listened to my strange ailments and tried everything possible to help me. Ron was very honest with me and even told me if he didn't know what the issue was. After surfing a little bit too hard, I had some sharp pain in my left shoulder. I went to Island Orthopedics and they suggested I get some physical therapy. I chose Orthosport Hawaii (Aina Haina) based upon a suggestion from my girlfriend and location. I was randomly assigned Ron to help with my shoulder. On first impression Ron comes off a little terse and all business, but after having gone to him for 6 weeks, I realized he just wants to heal people without any BS. My shoulder injury was a strange one and Ron listened to all the background information and symptoms that I presented him with. It stumped him, but he was determined to help me. Ron would massage the affected shoulder, and stretch it upon every visit, and also had me do physical therapy exercises. Over time the pain in my shoulder diminished, and I was regaining strength. Thanks to Ron's deductive work and persistence to get to the cause of my shoulder injury, I was able to make a healthy recovery. read more

This is my second time using OrthoSports in Niu Valley for an athletic injury. The therapist I had this time was Blair, very professional, funny, personable, and enthusiastic. He helped me reach the goals we established from my first day assessing my abilities. I didn't realize the scar tissue that I had developed from my injury caused my lack of mobility and range of motion. Blair got in there and broke up the scar tissue, which helped tremendously. He emphasized the importance of daily stretching, and explained why each exercise would help with my recovery. I am now doing Wellness once a month with Blair to help me continue in the right direction with my mobility and not allowing scar tissue to return. I am SO GRATEFUL to my PT Ron for reviving my faith in physical therapists and bringing my shoulder back to life. I would absolutely recommend this place to athletes! Professional staff, timely (never late for appointments), and clean facility. I wish that I was referred to OrthoSport back in July 2018 when I first tore my labrum in a bicycle accident. I learned from Josh Schien, my physical therapist at Niu Valley a great deal about how to deal with the issues of my left knee. He actually diagnosed my knee problem that my primary care physician referred me for physiotherapy with (a Baker's cyst and some osteoarthritis, a perfect diagnosis confirmed by an orthopedic surgeon I was scheduled to see later). Josh taught me how to strengthen the right muscles to take some load off my knee joint, without causing pain. He is knowledgeable and he could offer multiple approaches to address the different muscle groups. He explained how the various exercises work for my knee and patiently answered many questions. He could also manipulate my knee joint, making it less sore and more relaxed. The staff at the front desk was also very friendly and helpful. Be aware about Orthosport Rehab Facility in Niu Valley off Kalanianaole Hwy. I was referred there by my orthopedic surgeon's office after my meniscus surgery. Today I walked out (never to return) after I was scolded for dropping the F-Bomb after my therapist asked me to describe my pain and I said it hurts like F. I then apologized and said sorry, sometimes it slips out when I'm in that much pain, but I assured him it wouldn't happen again. Then, 10 minutes later, another exercise caused excruciating pain and I said, "Jesus" that hurts. He then reprimanded me again for my language. I said excuse me? What did I say? He said please don't use the word Jesus because some might find it offensive. I then ended the session, grabbed my belongings and said, if saying the word Jesus is offensive to anyone in this gym, then I am in the wrong gym and left. read more

I see Marie for Massage Therapy. Right away she was warm, and personable. I told her what areas are bothering me, and she's super careful to treat those problem areas with care. I'm not afraid to tell her to go easy or put more pressure on these areas. She understands what she's doing, and is competent in this field. Her massage room is very relaxing, so I feel very calm and can rest easily when I lay down for my treatment. I'm thankful that she puts so much care into making sure I leave feeling better than I did coming in. I couldn't recommend her enough. read more

So since I posted my review in 2015, I have continued my membership with the Medically Oriented Gym and have from time to time been prescribed physical therapy at Orthosport Hawaii. Since my problem is degenerative arthritis there are occasions where I have flare-up issues that require physical therapy treatment. I've had Jill Dietmeyer as my PT and she is one of the most dedicated therapists there. She does whatever she can--creating exercise plans on land or in the pool or massage treatments to make you feel better than when you first walked into the clinic. When I'm not undergoing PT, I'm upstairs in the MOG working out with Personal Trainers Alyssa Santos or Travis Ota. These Trainers are also dedicated to their profession and their clients. What impresses me most about all the trainers at Orthosport is that they actually have the education and training in their specialty, e.g. Parkinson's Disease, rehab therapy, overall fitness, that makes them better than the trainers at other gyms in town. They are familiar with my medical record and history of all my surgeries so they are always cognizant of any issues or pain that I'm having while exercising and will modify the exercise accordingly. It is such a comfort having Trainers that truly care for my wellbeing! I would never go to any other gym and I highly recommend Orthosport Hawaii to anyone who needs Physical Therapy and then later a gym to keep fit and get stronger! read more

This is the 3rd time I have been to Orthosport at Niu Valley but for different issues. Every therapist I had was been good. I had Blair as my physical therapist this time and he was great! Professional, personable, funny, prompt and knowledgeable! He was able to help me improve my movement, flexibility, and strength with some sweat and hard work. I've been working with personal trainers at OrthoSport for a long time. They have made the differnce in my golf and tennis game especially as I enter middle age. My previous knee and shoulder injuries are well looked after and they always make adjustments to my routine to prevent pains and reinjury. All the staff are welcoming and each trainer has their unique excercises which I appreciate as it keeps my 3x/week schedule interesting. Alyssa and Sydney are my primary trainers. Can't speak enough about them. I get good solid workouts from both. If you're looking for weak ass PT with a short massage, stretching and light weight work, you at at the wrong place. This place has a different philosophy to actually strengthen your muscles and core so your problem area will heal. They have aquatic therapy as well as numerous other options. My PT, Justin is more like a personal trainer that will push me to my limit for a full hour. Im exhausted as well as sore the next day. My core definitely feels stronger and my back is getting better. I actually dread going to the next session, but I know it will help me in the long run. read more

18 months ago I was in a car accident (not my fault of course!). I've seen a dozen doctors and therapists in that time and still suffer from much pain. Last August I went to a new orthopedic doctor that suggested Ortho Sport for therapy before considering hip surgery. Justin is my therapist at Ortho Sport and has worked tirelessly with me to strengthen surrounding muscles to help alleviate the pain I feel while walking, sitting and sleeping. I'm not a swimmer but the aqua therapy is amazing! I ended up needing hip surgery in January and came back to Ortho Sport and Justin for rehab. She's been working w me for 7 weeks or so and I'm feeling great. She's guided me and offered ways I can strengthen my core and worked out the tightness in my gluteus. A year ago I made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. I was told over 30 years ago by my Dr. Eventually I would need knee surgery eventually, and through the years had quit running, but did speed walking, and when the pain got to be to much I would get some pt that helped for a while and continue on until I couldn’t stand the pain any longer. The surgeon suggested three routes, injections, pt, or surgery. Even though I had done pt 8 months prior I gave it one last try. And am I glad I did. Jensen in Niu Valley is a miracle worker. Jensen worked with me for 5 weeks twice a week, gave me a print out of all the exercises, and a link on line of all the exercises and how to preform the properly. I visited OrthoSport Hawaii in late 2019 and was referred to Devon McCord for physical therapy for a rotator cuff-related problem. Devon is fantastic! He is very friendly and easy to talk to, and his explanations are easy to understand. He is not only intelligent and well-trained, but he is skillful in locating the source or a problem and even stretching and massaging the affected muscles and tendons. He developed a series of exercises that helped me not only get rid of my original pain and stiffness, but that also will keep me from aggravating the same area in the future. Dr. Devon is a fabulous Physical Therapist. I went in for my left knee and was experiencing intense pain. He set up weekly therapies to help strengthen and make me more mobile and Dr. Devon did the exercises with me. He's extremely sharp / knowledgeable with his program. I cannot recommend these guys highly enough. I'm a competitive triathlete and have been dealing with a terrible case of IT Band syndrome for about a year now. The first time we met, Mike worked with me for an hour and a half in order to identify the cause and prescribe strengthening and mobility exercises that actually fixed the ROOT of the problem instead of just going through the motions. By doing a video analysis of my gait, he was able to recommend improvements to my run form that helped almost immediately (but did take a lot of concentration) and was able to see exactly where the problems were. Most clinics will give you the standard treatment for these common injuries. Strengthen the glutes, quads / VMO, rolling, etc... Strong muscles are helpful and obviously necessary, but when the nerves don't tell them to fire at the exact right moment in your gait, those big muscles aren't doing any good while you run. Mike prescribed a unique set of functional strength exercises intended to "wake up" the nerves in order to get them to fire at the right time during my stride. Mike is, hands-down, the best PT I have ever worked with. The ITB syndrome is an ongoing issue, but only because I continued to race on it all year. I'm confident that now that I'm taking the time to rest it and dedicate time to the rehab that Mike prescribed, it's going to get better. read more
