I came in early expecting to wait. I was brought back in a couple short minutes, before my appointment time came! This is an actual miracle in healthcare these days. The staff was professional, warm and helpful. I felt comfortable, safe and cared for in this office. It's a small thing but the patient exam rooms were very warm and comfortable. I sincerely wish all access to medical care was this easy! They were actually recommended in my insurance portal as a tier 1 in network provider. I won't hesitate to return.

Ten minutes later they called me back and said they had a cancellation, and asked if I could be there at 2. When I got there, I was petrified but everyone was so kind and gentle and helpful. Once I got in the exam room I couldn't stop crying and everybody was understanding and kind about it. The midwife who placed my IUD did it really quickly and clearly had a lot of experience. She told me everything she was going to do before she did it and asked for consent, which I always appreciate in a medical environment. She made me feel comfortable, and even though it inherently wasn't a great experience, every single person in this office made it manageable and I came away with positive feelings about my experience at Planned Parenthood, despite the circumstances. For anyone else wondering, they even said that I could bring my kids if I needed to (they just needed to be in a stroller during the procedure). I didn't end up needing to, but I appreciated that they would accommodate that without question. This is my third experience with Planned Parenthood (two different offices) and all three have been stellar.

Even food service rocked. Still does. Impromptu visit to put me through tests in the morning. So stuck in my room with a view. Lunch was served, per request and it sounded yummy. My issues have to do with administrative and billing nightmares. Between my two times at MaineMed facilities, I changed my name legally because of divorce. MaineMed refuses to update that but updated my insurance (with my legal name as of 3.5 years then) and my address but wouldn't update the name change. I have asked them to: 1.) Send bills in the correct name, as I would no longer be paying the bills for someone that doesn't legally exist and 2.) Send me an updated payments against account. It took four months to get that (even though I was promised that it was on its way in a phone call March 6th from a Patient Financial Services person) and it was sent certified mail to the same person who doesn't legally exist. Meanwhile, I have sent two rounds of certified mail to three different MaineHealth offices, including executives. Not one single receipt was sent back to me. (I sent the second set about two weeks ago.) I have told them repeatedly, in writing, that I would not pay on an account that was not legally mine, according to MaineHealth. I did pay some toward the balance, but MaineHealth has responded to NONE of my 12 written outreaches since the beginning of the year. Yet, MaineHealth's Patient Financial Services office has run credit checks on me three times (because the person to whom they address everything doesn't legally exist) and has threatened to send the account to collections, all while taking months to do one part of my request and not honoring any of the others. I also told them, repeatedly, in writing that once these issues were resolved and the name updated, I would send them a check for the balance. I made it clear that not paying the balance was my leverage. It is clear to me that the MaineHealth organization does not actually care about patients, just about money and process. Disgusting organization from an administrative standpoint.

Honestly the more often I am seen here the more I love it…read more I recently was suffering from a bronchial flu. Like a hideous combo of bronchitis and the flu. I had been in bed for two days and was due back at work but knew I couldn't make it thru an hour of it so I drove to the hospital. It's early afternoon on a Thursday and they had a 3 hour wait in the ER. Well I was absolutely too sick to sit in a waiting room for 3 hours- and that's just to get to step one. So I got back in my car and called Maine Med family practice and found out that they do have urgent care so I could be seen that day at a designated time just by a different doctor- but one with my records on hand. So much better . Seriously unless it's 3am and I'm in an accident I would ALWAYS prefer to just use my urgent care!! So today I had my physical. I received 3 vaccinations and was totally happy to realize the importance of having a regular doctor at a decent hospital. Going over the paperwork they gave me while there I realized that in the last few months they had amassed my entire medical history. I lived seeing shots I received in 1988. I don't have to remember that my Tetanus was due this year. They reminded me. Maybe it cuz I'm from a big city in California but insurance for me there always meant ER visits or clinic visits. Never this personalized care. They called me to set up the appt for my yearly physical. I didn't have to remember. Gotta love that. One less thing on the calendar to set reminders for.

I've utilized healthcare services at many places in the Portland area (all of the major local…read moresystems), plus some in Boston. Without even having set up my patient portal yet, my experience with Portland Gastro has been the most streamlined out of any of these, while still feeling thorough, personalized, and friendly. I expect it'll be even better once I set up a portal for easier online connection, which is my preferred way of doing healthcare. (But if that's not you, this group is still great with traditional phone calls/paper forms.) There was a wait-list when I was referred here, but not a ridiculous one like many medical offices these days (about a month). Dr. Weick and all other staff I interacted with (nursing, admin, techs, etc) were kind, calm, efficient, and skilled at communicating. Dr. Weick clearly cares about making sure he and his patients are on the same page. Our intake visit was efficient but thorough, and he makes a point of using accessible language without making it sound like he's talking to a child (a tough balance to strike in specialty care). When I let him know that I'm also a physician so we could skip some parts I didn't need explained, he modified his language just enough - he still treated me like a patient and made sure I understood everything, unlike some docs who will assume you need nothing explained at that point and slip into jargon. We made an initial plan, plus some tentative next steps depending on what we found, and he made sure to leave time for any questions I had. It was a great example of balanced physician/patient teamwork, and a treatment plan that incorporated clear next steps along with subsequent "if/then" flexibility. The phlebotomist who drew labs after that initial appointment was very skilled. I've had a lot of blood drawn over the years. This is the only time I literally didn't feel the needle. Kudos! Due to a cancellation, they were able to book me for a colonoscopy just 2 days after my initial visit (vs the normal delay of a month or two). The prep wasn't fun, but that's unavoidable. What's important is that they made sure I understood the plan and rules, and gave me a very well designed handout to guide me through it at home. Procedure day itself was seamless, low key, and even a little fun due to the good-natured energy of the folks working, even though I gathered they had some last minute changes to the schedule that would've thrown the mood off in some other offices. They also confirmed that I was ok with my partner coming back into recovery when he picked me up, and potentially hearing anything the doc had to say to me. They confirmed this *before* I was given any sedating medication! (Should be a no brainer, but you'd be surprised how often these questions are left until after a patient is basically high.) General points: easy access (295, exit 7), easy free parking lot. Very clean and comfy bathrooms, waiting room, prep/recovery room, etc. Free wifi. Close to two grocery stores and a pharmacy if you want to pick up your prep materials after an office visit. My only complaint is not their fault - Google maps sometimes directs you to the wrong place. Even if you literally type in the 161 Marginal Way address, 50/50 chance it'll inexplicably still try to send you to a Congress St location across town. If you're using GPS, just enter Planet Fitness on Marginal Way instead. It's in the same parking lot. Even as a doc, it's rare for me *as a patient* to have an experience in the healthcare sector that's just plain good. Even if providers or staff are great, the systems or processes they are a part of are often frustrating. I'm really glad to be able to write a truly positive review for once. Great job, Portland Gastro! (Note: this review is for service in March 2024, though I have a friend who has been coming here since ~2017 and reports being similarly impressed.)
