Careless, uninformed, rude and impatient. They often use the excuse that they are "short staffed", which should never be the problem of the patient. My first PCP was fired or quit, they "referred me to another doctor, moving my appoint out 6 months from when my appointment should have been, That doctor left and now I am on my third PCP in under 2 years. On the first visit, no one ever took my medical history, never asked any questions pertaining to the issues I shared (just took notes) and was extremely dismissive and condecending. Don't expect them to spend more than 15 minutes with you. No time to care for the patient when you need to make your patient quota! read more

Disorganized, rude staff, and zero continuity of care. I have been a patient at InterMed in Portland for years, but the quality of service has rapidly degraded from bad to completely unacceptable. It has become virtually impossible to actually see my primary care physician. Instead, I am constantly passed off to an RN or pushed toward outside referrals because the doctor seems uninterested in actually managing my care or following up on existing conditions. The scheduling system is a disaster. My GP is consistently "booked out" for six months. To make matters worse, InterMed has cancelled my annual physical twice now because the GP took vacation, yet they refuse to prioritize rescheduling me with my actual doctor. When I called to fix this, the booking receptionist named Sara was incredibly condescending and unnecessarily rude, telling me they would "try to squeeze me in" for my annual health checkup. Getting "squeezed in" for foundational, routine preventative care is entirely unacceptable. When you finally do see a doctor, the experience is cold. My GP has absolutely no bedside manner, shows zero initiative in following up on my chronic condition, and just tries to pass me off to specialists as quickly as possible. The administration is toxic, the communication is nonexistent, and the patient care is deeply flawed. I no longer trust this facility with my health and will be looking for a new GP for me and my family. read more

It is not a fringe or obscure plan -- it is coverage earned through real sacrifice. To be turned away from this practice simply because they don't accept ChampVA was a gut punch. We aren't asking for special treatment. We are asking to be treated like any other patient. When a medical practice chooses not to accept insurance that covers veterans' families, it sends a clear message about who they value -- and this practice has made that message loud and clear. I will never understand how medical practices can treat their patients the way INTERMED does. Every time I missed, the PA told me to not worry about it. Well she didn't relay this to her boss. So when I called in to get a refill on my Insulin I was told that I was no longer a patient. I was fired by my PCP. A woman I never met. I have seen her PA for my Diabetes management. It's impossible to see my PCP but now that I am learning to live without insulin I'm wondering if I needed it after all. I called to have my prescription renewed only to find out that I am no longer their patient. I just got a letter showing 8 times in the last 2 years that I missed. There are a number of times I missed appointments due to not realizing what day it was or being too anxious to go out. Or in 2024 after my wife died. After being her primary caregiver. Every time I missed, I was told by my Diabetes PA, that it was OK. Well, despite Intermed's concern for their time how about their patients? I have learned my lesson. No matter the practitioner, from now on I will document what time my appointment is for and when the practitioner finally shows up. Appointment was easy, customer service was good at desk and in lab draw, blood draw went fine & was relatively painless. I was originally sent for pancreas labs, my doctor added on some hormonal labs. When she read the labs order out, she mentioned the pancreas ones but not the hormonal ones so I brought that to her attention. She read it on the paper & said let me get extra tubes, she went and got extra tubes came back & did the blood draw. A week later I checked myquest and I only have results for the hormones-not the pancreas. It says no labs are pending. All results are done and there are no pancreas labs. I called Intermed to ask them about this, and after waiting for a long time, Emily gets on the phone to tell me that I need to come back in for a blood draw because they sent what they had to quest and obviously I don't have those results so...? I'll go somewhere else to get these labs re-drawn. Shame since I literally live next door. read more

Staff are great. caring, patient, and professional. But, time for a rant... OK, I've been dealing with this for years and haven't said anything. But I'm done being polite. This is a healthcare organization where we should try to make people healthy. The building is set up to make using the stairs almost impossible. There's no information on where to go. None of the doors in the stairwell labeled. There's no indication of which service is on which floor or which service check in I should go to. I love taking the stairs because it makes me healthy. When you spend more time in the barbers chair, a $20-25 haircut, not a stylist, than you do in an annual examination , it pretty much explains Intermed today. They do SEND you the results of blood work, but in a fashion only those in the medical field understands. They use to have the results and discuss at your annual examination, but I guess that takes too long now. What's next alarms going off to move everyone along? We use to be Intermed's patients. I've had great doctors and bad doctors. My current GP told me she could remove a skin tag during my annual check-up, but she didn't tell me that I'd be charged almost $400 for something that I did not know I could do myself with a cheap kit from the supermarket. I did not fill out the pronoun section of the annual health form and in retaliation an office worker reclassified me as male. That's the kind of environment you find at Intermed. Medicine is political there, which I also learned when I wanted to become pregnant late in life and not use donor eggs or IVF. My excellent OB/GYN was on leave, and I had to tune out several doctors who were openly contemptuous of my choice and, by extension, my ethics. (I became pregnant and had my baby despite them.) Lately the biggest problem is having to wait 9 months for a colonoscopy and nine months for a mammogram after I had to cancel the one scheduled a year in advance. On the plus side, it's nice that at Intermed most of your healthcare needs are met in house. read more

I went to see Meagan Johnson today because my PCP was out. She was not helpful at all and sent me home with the same problem I came in with and no solution or suggestions. I left crying. I was probably in there 10 minutes. My daughter also went to see her. She refused to give her a PAP and told her she better hurry up and call her Obgyn to get her name on the waiting list. Intermed services and care has gone downhill fast over the past 7-8 years. My doctor and the P.A.'s are wonderful. Everyone else is either incompetent, do not care, or they are outright angry at having to serve patients. Their Portal is practically useless except for a few services. There is a reason their CEO had to send a message to customers to request people not be hard on the Intermed staff. People are angry at the bad service and the CEO blames the customers...no wonder Intermed is so bad. read more

If I could give less than one star, I would. It seems they lack what is important to me, a personal experience with a provider who will recognize their own patients. They do not schedule a patient with the same provider, the provider who is assigned as THE primary care physician of the patient. What is the point of the word primary and it's use? Why does reason lack to show a patient they will usually receive secondary physician experiences here? I'd appreciate a doctor who knows my face and doesn't pick up my chart for a first time... Every time. Anyway, this is my primary concern. I won't go into the rest but I will say I feel the some of the actual people who carry a doctorate degree to lack real credibility. They seem to only throw pills at you now. Is that a miracle of their degrees or the conveneince of Big Fat Pharma's magic? I've had mixed results with Intermed. On the one hand, they seem organized and their staff are very friendly. On the other hand, I've had two conditions misdiagnosed. Also, I encountered a huge hassle with a referral which caused me to have to spend hours on the phone going round and round between my health insurance company, Intermed, and the specialist. As far as I can tell, the referral was made without the approval of my health insurance company. To this day, nobody has ever been able to explain to me why a referral was allowed to proceed without prior approval from my health insurance company. Is this standard practice? It seems to me that the referral shouldn't proceed without the insurance company approving it first. But I'm just an ordinary citizen and I'm not intimately familiar with the infernal machinations of the medical establishment and health insurance industry. read more

Intermed use to be an exceptional place. It is now an impersonal chop shop. You will get an admin staff of two layers deep. If you have real concerns or questions you are lucky if they call you back.and you won't be talking to a doctor. Some phone lines are always full mailboxes that you never get a return call back from like the physician transition team. Both my wife and I are experiencing intermed issues. We even just had a days long saga scheduling a disabled son of ours a time sensitive physical for an upcoming dentist appointment. They are full of a staff of people that sound like caring valspeak types but expect little more. It is truly sad they have gone downhill. My wife and my doctor was great..top of the line.. but now retired.. now we are on our own. They could care a less that we have been going there 30 years. Poor staff to patient ratio has resulted in delayed annual physical, inability to see a primary care physician and inability to access medication refills in a timely manner. My daughter has experienced cancellation by the practice resulting in a 4 month delay in an annual physician And ability to refill meds. Just today a missed appointment that she had waited 4 months due a poorly communicated change in location of her primary care This practice is simply a warehouse of " healthcare" pushing a Big Pharma agenda, they have lost sight of the patient in patient centered care. Excellent doctors and medical staff. Administrative services are a nightmare. Doctors are overbooked to the extent it routinely takes 10 months to see a primary physician, even for established patients with significant health issues that require ongoing treatment. The new routine is to push patients off to nurse practitioners assigned to an actual doctor. Regardless how polite you might be, you can expect to have a phone call answered by the most sarcastic, snarky, rude individuals. No administrative staff supervision. I, unfortunately,, have to find another doctor or risk my health and carry the stress of being treated at InterMed. read more

Intermed is an Admin-heavy, quality care-light organization that prioritizes scheduling and testing, presumably to hike up visit fees, and falls absolutely flat on its face when it comes to patient care. Update: I cut my arm open in a rusty nail. I called my doctor at InterMed for a tetanus booster. I was told there were no open appointments. I reminded the person in the phone that tetanus is potentially fatal, and that I needed to see SOMEBODY there for a visit, even just a nurse visit. She said that there were no open appointments for at least 3 days. I could not believe that my doctors office would deny a patient for a simple shit that could prevent a fatal disease. (The chance of getting tetanus is 10%, but that's still too high for something preventable). I cannot believe how negligent InterMed is. They clearly do not care about their patients, and should be investigated. I did go to a local AFC for a booster, but I will not ever be calling InterMed again. read more

I have gone to Intermed for the past 30 years. The care givers are good but the wait to get an appointment is ridiculous. Each time I have called I waited on the phone for almost an hour to speak to a Medical Assistant to get me in for an appointment. The facility is great as long as you already have your appointment, trying to get a sick visit is RIDICULOUS! Something has to be done to fix the wait time as I surely don't feel like their patients are their priorities anymore. They have grown too large to provide good customer care if you are sick. Great doctors, horrible scheduling, horrible billing department. My 12 month old daughter is sick and we went last week for appointment. They told us it was just a cold and maintain Tylenol regiment. I asked for RSV test since it's going around and she had a bad cough. They said they didn't think she'd need it but I was adamant. Boom it was positive and was told if she didn't improve in 3/4 days then call back for another visit and she'd be on a priority list since it was a recheck. The receptionist or nurse told me to to northern lights urgent care(they only take there patients). Spent over an hour on the phone today and can get in tomorrow afternoon or go to the ER. Just received a bill for my children's annual exams. I have to pay an additional $250 charge because we discussed acne during the visit and this is not considered preventative care. Completely worthless... The place has become a factory. My doctor wanted me to get an urgent ultrasound... It took an entire day, from 9 AM this morning until 5 PM this evening for someone in radiology scheduling to call me back, only to tell me that regardless that the order was marked "stat" or not, there were no ultrasound appoints for 7 weeks.....!!!! I asked the scheduler what I was supposed to do at that point considering it was an urgent request...should i just die? She had no solutions. It was a waste of an entire day considering I could have found, or attempted to find an appointment at another facility. Intermed has lost its way. It's all about profits. The banner at the New Hampshire/maine border should say, "Maine.. A great place to visit, a horrible place to get sick". read more

I've been seeing Dr. Trowbridge since 1999. I now live three hours north, but still see her and my OB-GYN, Dr. Noble, at Intermed. No one is perfect and I have had to advocate for myself more than I probably should have to. However, she has been very accommodating with my schedule and needs, especially when I was a travel nurse. The medical assistance and front desk staff are nice and helpful. read more

I finally got my colonoscopy results back two months later. Not sure where the break down was. I was not too impressed with the gastroenterology office across from Intermed. It was like a production line and very rushed. So either they never sent my results to Intermed or my Dr. at intermed never looked at them. Our health care system is ridiculous, so I can't fault just Intermed. Otherwise I would've given them a 2 star review, but they are only a small problem of a much bigger picture. Their patient portal Healow is the easiest way to quickly communicate. With so many apps on my phone I often forget what the app they use. The patient portal through the app only is effective for adults,so if you have a minor/child it's kind of useless. Legally minors information can't be shared. The main issue is getting any appointment that hasn't been set up months in advance--anything outside of routine exams. I waited over 6 months for seasonal winter eczema and finally got to see the referred dermatologist in the summer! Most of the times I ended up with the Nurse practitioner since my primary care Dr had no availability. Which is fine for the common cold but doesn't make sense for anything out of the ordinary. There's basically very little safety net for emergencies. I did end up switching Drs and offices to the S Portland office, which seems only slightly less busy. read more

I have been a customer of Intermed for over twenty years. The care is great! The billing practices of Intermed billing is purposely deceptive, confusing and not transparent. The statements are unreadable and trying to find how much you owe via the statements or on line portal is impossible. The online portal is only up to date as of the last statement date. Any payments don't show up on the online portal until the next statement date - so you don't know if the payment you made was accepted or not until the next statement date - sometimes a month later. read more

I needed to go to India for work. I got my visa, booked my tickets, and thought I was all ready to go until my wife asked, "did you get your immunizations". S#@%. Luckily, InterMed has a travel medicine clinic and it is conveniently located right across the street from Trader Joe's. You call their number (207-347-2908) and leave a message on their machine with your personal information and when/where you are traveling. They call you back within a few days and depending on the time of year they can get you in within the week. Tip: it is good to plan these things a month or two in advance because a lot of immunizations need time to take effect. My appointment itself was amazing. The clinic made up an information packet for me that was specific to the area I was traveling to and the doctor went over the information with me for about 30 minutes. She even went over which mosquito repellents were best and how best to apply them. She clearly explained each immunization that was available and asked whether I wanted them or not (all of them please!). The whole experience gave me a lot more piece of mind about traveling to an unfamiliar part of the world. I recommend them for all of your travel needs. read more

PCP: I have a meh Intermed PCP whom I've only met once --so I'll give her a few more chances and then move on if I feel we really can't work together. I am (I think) a bit more sensitive than the average person; I've got some body trauma that can flare up with high stress medical situations. Its hard for me to go with the flow when unanticipated things are happening to my body. I know this and try to regulate when I'm stressed so that I don't feel anxious. I calmly tried to explain my need for pre-planned exams and clear expectations, but the PCP vastly overcompensated and now treats me like I'm a very fragile idiot. She also talks down to me about tests I really want, and minimizes the importance of info I want to have. It seems I may even know more about one of these tests than she does. Otherwise she's fine. So 2 stars for her. Answering service: this is why I'm reviewing today. The after hours answering service is just plain bad. I hope this story will help prepare intermed patients for a potentially stressful situation. It's a call center somewhere in the south that must answer calls for non medical businesses as well because they lack skills for dealing with patients. They have a policy meant to prevent bothering the on call physician for rx refills, and if you even mention a need for a medication, they can refuse to help you. I called on the weekend asking for a doctor to prescribe me Paxlovid (the Covid 19 med) and I was treated like a junkie looking for a fix. The operator was rude and mean. It took a while to explain that I have Covid so all I actually need is a doctor to ok my rx. But before she would do her job and request that the physician call me back I had to state that my real reason for calling was "to discuss my symptoms." Aggressive, and not the first time I've had bad experiences with their operators. 1 star. On-call physician: The doctor who called me back about Paxlovid was good. He was prompt, friendly and warm. He didn't talk down to me and explained Paxlovid's pros and cons. He agreed that it was probably best for me to take it. He called it right in to my pharmacy. 5 stars. read more

I had such hope for this company. They started out well organized, on schedule, with terrific staff and nice facilities. Now they have gotten even worse than Martins Point. They are always behind schedule; I have been waiting 30 minutes past my appointment so far. The quality of the staff has deteriorated as they grow. Time for me to find a new physician. read more

My doctor at Intermed is the best doctor I've ever seen. We have very open conversations about what's going on in my life and what I need. He's spent 45 minutes in the room with me, checking in, explaining new medications to me, and answering all the questions I have. He's never been judgmental about my health concerns, and he always is concerned not only about my physical health, but also my mental wellbeing. Whenever I get testing done I receive immediate responses about results, and when I use the inter office communications service in patient portal, I get a response the next business day. I'll try to keep this brief: Physician dictated to me why I was there in the first place. Take a minute and think about how this attitude is a dangerous posture between Dr. and patient. In my situation it meant that she stated she treated me for a different reason than the actual reason for my visit. I went in for a root cause analysis of a health issue and she insisted on treating my symptom. An illness caused me to lose hair. She insisted on treating the symptom (hair loss) and I requested to investigate why I was ill in the first place. In the end my insurance wouldn't cover the visit viewing "hair-loss as cosmetic. Insult to injury: I also had to argue with her to have my Thyroid checked. I was prescribed my Thyroid meds later that day. Good thing I spoke up! read more
