The Fairfax Fair is a Northern Virginia social institution!…read more Most people's first initiation into this yearly carnival is sometime around high school when they hold hands with a certain special someone on the ferris wheel or if they took the group date route, had worn matching tee shirts emblazoned with their crew's name in neon grafitti writing. Either way, the Fairfax Fair is the start of many, many blissful summer memories. A few of mine include: 1) The time I volunteered for a major sponsor of the event to dress up as the Cow from Cartoon Network's "Cow & Chicken". All of these little kids tried to pull my udders and punch me in the eye (which was conveniently located through Cow's open mouth). 2) The time my best friend performed on the Budweiser stage with her hs sign language choir. It was like an awkward scene out of Napoleon Dynamite that I will cherish in my heart forever. Whatever your age, gender, race, or socio-economic class the Fairfax Fair has something for everyone. Meat on a stick? Check. Laser light shows and fireworks? Check. Carnival rides? Check. Crazy circus carneys? Double check. Burnt out music artists from the 80's? QUADRUPLE CHECK!!! This Festival goes under few different names: The church website calls it "Greek and East…read moreFestival", the host (Harris Pavilion) calls it "Annual Manassas International Food Festival," and earlier versions on the Facebook called it "Old World" festival. These are all good names for this Nativity of Our Lord Carpatho-Russian Orthodox church fundraiser. In a conversation with one member I learned that this is one of those orthodox churches that do not have the National denomination (Bulgarian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, etc...) as it caters not just to the first generation of immigrants but more to all generations and all people with the Orthodox fate, with no consideration of the national borders. I learned that they have one mass in English and Our Father prayer is recited in 7 world languages. The menu of the festival reflects the church diversity but caused a dilemma of many comers as far as what to eat because it is a long way from Ethiopia to Russia on the food road. People took longer time to figure out if they would rather have Ethiopian, Greek, Slavic, Romanian, Mexican or American food but once in line you move quickly with the food vendors winking and lifting their trays to entice you to get their food. Pierogi were very good, baked well; hard outside and soft inside so combination of dough, potato and cheese was properly melting in the mouth. While I was eating delicious plums with crème, my tongue quickly detected a harder object within the plum. I wondered why plums were not pitted like the most things in US are and to my pleasant surprise the object in question was a walnut half. Once I knew what I am eating - it all came together very nicely. Letdown was that the deserts did not offered any layered moist cake or crepes - which always make me anticipate any Slavic or Western Europe festival. Another letdown was that I could not have a Greek or Russian beer. There was just one Greek wine type but on a hot day a beer goes better with the lunch. The venue was perfect and enthusiasm of the host was energizing. I was happy to support in some way their church. The visit can be combined with a walk in the old town Manassas.

6th Annual Persian Annual Spring Festival - Sizdah Bedar - Bull Run Regional Park - is like a…read morePersian Woodstock. It is all about peace, love for nature, fun and dance and family time. It is very inclusive, which is demonstrated with the beer garden next to the stage where DJ spun lively Persian pop music. When a person asked me to take a picture of their group in the Farsi language I felt as one with them, not looking different, or having a different accent that triggers the loaded question that comes with the cultural baggage, "Where are you from?" Every vendor thanked me so much as if they are the guardians of their culture and I am a VIP guest. It felt like they were so many bridges, not any walls between us. Food escapades started with the Ash Reshteh soup. I worried about it because it looked like they were too many spices and ingredients in the soup - you know what color you get when you use too many colors - mud. However, the soup felt like it was in the layers - so many tastes, not killing but supplementing each other. Cost $5. Next one was the tongue - the menu was in Farsi and lady pointed her tongue when I asked her to give me something that is most popular. I got the tongue in the nice broth and sesame bread. It was so soft that I could cut it with my spoon. It was so good, that I would drive 30 minutes to eat it again. I also had to try Persian tea which was stronger than I anticipated. Cost for both $4. I did get a kebab platter and it was not good looking but it tasted good. Cost $10. At the end the real treat was Persian ice cream with saffron and cream that was so different and so rich and sweet and presence of saffron, the most expensive spice in the World, adds a rich taste and makes you feel good, as long as you do not think about how laborious is to collect delicate saffron threads, plucked from flowers and dried. $5 The biggest compliment came from my 9-year old son on the ride back, who said - eating skittles after this great Persian food is kind of lame. In order to fully enjoy the festival next year, buy tickets in advance, bring friends, blankets and do not come before 1PM. Next event is April 1, 2018.

Rather than focus on slides (of which there are two) Pumpkin Village has moon bounces. We first went to the giant pumpkin inflatable, followed by the corn bin and the zip line. My son loved the castle inflatable and the train inflatable. Several also were more obstacle course with corn and animal themes. We had lots of fun on the pedal cars and the giant pumpkin pillow too.We spent time indoors as well doing arts and crafts and playing in the indoor playground. That was nice to have given how windy it was. While you don't get a pumpkin like Cox Farms, it's still fun and worth the trip.

It's close proximity means that I have a go-to spot to bring the kids on school breaks, rainy days, cold days, or whenever we simply have nothing to do. While there are a few standing exhibits, the staff does a really good job at changing things up (and keeping things topical) so each visit feels special. And the best part... SLIME. We've made slime conductors, spider slime, fluffy slime, snowflake slime, glow-in-the-dark slime .. basically alll the slime. The experiment lab always has a slime option and it is a highlight of every visit. My eldest daughter went from barely reading and needing help at the beginning of our membership to fully reading and creating experiments on her own. It is so much fun to see. For the littles, there is a small playroom with building blocks, magnatiles, books, and those large blue fort/construction material building materials. My two-year old loved spending time in this room but now that she is three she likes making her own hovercrafts and setting them sail in the wind tunnel. The staff is SO kind, SO helpful, and so passionate about what they do. I love how they offer volunteer/internship opportunities to teens and will also set up special traveling science labs to Title I schools. If you are a member you also get discounted or free visits to children's science museums all across the United States which has made this membership 100% worth it for our family. If you are looking for an experience gift to give a little one this year, I highly recommend the Children's Science Center!

There were about 30+ vendors that offered strawberry-themed desserts and drinks - we also checked out their strawberry eating competition, karaoke, and purchased some cute strawberry-themed items. There were some live music performances throughout the day as well. Since this festival is running all weekend, they were offering entry tickets for various timeslots to manage the crowd, which was pretty smart! (I'm kind of addicted to chocolate, so...) Anyway, I definitely recommend Hilary and The Chocolate Chick. I'm going to see if my boss would have one at our Holiday party this year.
