Too busy to itemize an $11K quote? What? Not a way to win my business.
    Sadie K.

I was quoted $200 for a chimney inspection and cleaning. When Jason came to do the work, he was 15 min early which was nice. I had a good feeling that things were going to go smoothly. We spoke for about 10 minutes about the work I was looking to do, about what was and wasn't possible. He then proceeded to do the inspection. He was only outside for about 5 min when he came back in and asked me to come outside and look. He showed me where my chimney was cracked at the roof line and discussed the various options for repair. Gave me a verbal quote of 10K to restore it or 1K to take it down to a safe level and reinforce it (which would mean we'd have to convert to a gas insert). At this stage I was feeling a bit upset that there was more damage than expected, but it needed to be handled and so I decided a gas insert would be the best route. As we discussed further, Jason kept insisting that gas inserts cost $5K and above even though I've seen them online for a large range of prices and some pretty nice ones around $2K. He insisted you get what you pay for which is usually true but in this case he wasn't willing to even discuss options with me. When the inspection was done, he told me there was so much work to do that it didn't make sense to clean it, that the cleaning can be done after. Then he charged me $180 for the inspection alone, which seemed a bit high given the cost of both would have only been $20 more. He then proceeded to make a big deal about running a gas line and how expensive it would be. He wouldn't explain why and seemed short tempered and too rushed to answer my questions. Before he left he said he would email me a quote, which I requested be itemized so I could pick and choose which work to prioritize. A week later he sent me a list of work to be done with a flat price of nearly $11,000 and when I asked for an itemized quote, he replied in short that he was "too busy to break everything down". Why would I agree to an $11K job without knowing what exactly I'm paying for? From our discussion the $11K seemed quite high and I wanted to know how it all broke out. It literally would have taken 10min. He already broke the work out and named his price. His response was rude and definitely did not win him the job. I would not recommend working with Jason Wady unless your rich, don't care where your money goes, and don't mind poor manners and crappy service.

    Removal of bottom of chimney

We contacted Jason in November 2019 to assess our crumbling chimney. He was able to propose a fix with several options to repair or replace. We chose to repair the brick chimney to retain the aesthetics. Then we elected to put in gas logs in the fireplace. Jason provided a cost estimate within a few days and said he could have the entire job completed in January. He and his brother Darren were able to start early (before Christmas). Jason took care of the permitting with City of Berkeley and the project was underway. They both worked quickly and efficiently taking out the old brick (to be reused in the rebuild), putting in rebar to make it structurally sound, and rebuilding both the top and the base of the chimney. They worked with us thru the holiday period and had the project completely done with final inspection by the end of January. We made reasonable periodic payments and the project was completed timely and within budget. The gas fireplace works great, the chimney is rock solid, and we are totally happy with their professionalism, craftsmanship and getting the job done right. They know what they are doing! We would highly recommend them for any masonry projects.

I would have given ZERO stars. Don't trust their overall YELP rating. I made that mistake. I feel…read morethe finished work (driveway, pathways, and wall) are reasonably acceptable. This is ONLY because we checked daily work and instructed them to fix mistakes and sloppy work. They spent a lot of their time redoing what should have been completed right the first time. Daily progress (or lack there of) showed us that the owner/project manager (Tevita/Mata) is not a good project manager nor that he gave his crew clear direction on this project. The process after contract signing was horrible...not at all professional. The project took much longer than Tevita initially quoted (over 2 months vs the 2 weeks he originally told us). This resulted in change orders and cost overruns. He also tried to charge me to fix their breakage/mistakes/errors (e.g., fixing the sidewalk his workers broke). His crew was not respectful of our property (we had to live with their mess...it's not a vacant lot). They did not regularly clean up the work site nor organize equipment and materials left onsite. Seeing their lunch garbage (cans, bottles, wrappers, etc.) at the end of their workday was common. This continued even after repeated complaints to Tevita and to his crew. No one on site could to provide straight answers as to that day's work or when specific project goals would be completed. Whenever I would spoke with him, Tevita made excuses, provided misinformation, denied deliverables he previously promised, and deflected from answering direct questions. He has a habit of talking over the customer when asked questions he doesn't like. On at least one occasion, he raised his voice and started yelling to avoid answering questions. If it was not in writing, he'd say it wasn't what we discussed. I have never had such issues when working with professional/reputable companies. Tevita and his crew failed to meet every single deliverable date he set. I found him very difficult to work with. I feel that he does not show proper respect to the customer. Instead he appears to think that the customer, the person paying him, should accept subpar work. I suspect that he may also not fully understand the processes involved with the work being performed. I feel that Tevita and Lamata Concrete are not professional. They didn't use professional equipment and they didn't manage the job site or their onsite work time professionally. Their workers typically started late morning and were gone by early afternoon. Lamata Concrete has major logistical problems. They couldn't get an adequately-sized crew or required materials to the job site at the start of any given day, typically interrupting workflow for hours to go fetch supplies. Had they staged materials and tools at the worksite (where there was ample area to store all materials needed for the entire project) and had his crew worked a full 8 hours per day at the job site, I believe they could have finished weeks ago. They are SLOW...3 weeks for a stamped concrete driveway and pathways. I definitely CANNOT recommend them for a cinder block wall. It took way too long (over 2 months) to complete. I feel like they have never built this type of wall. I regret hiring Lamata Concrete. I CANNOT recommend Lamata Concrete nor would I use them again. They were such a hassle to work with compared to the many other professional/reputable companies I have hired. My opinion...take their negative YELP reviews seriously and ask for references and talk to those references. Tevita's response is a great example of how he makes excuses, provides misinformation, denies promised deliverables, and deflects from addressing the real issue. I find it a bit childish and very unprofessional.
