Great store for outdoors/mountain sports. They also sell used gear on consignment so you can build up credit selling gear or cash out. The consignment items are well priced. Staff were nice. The staff at IME were friendly and knowledgeable. They helped me choose the correct backpack for my size. I was there about forty minutes before closing, but they did not rush me to make a selection. This was a good thing as the selection is enormous. read more

If you have a serious interest in outdoor adventure, specifically hiking, climbing, mountaineering, etc, IME is about as good as it gets. Unlike large outdoor chain stores, the owners and staff here are all very experienced, and genuinely enthusiastic. They have led and taken part in treks to some of the most difficult terrain in the world, and are always happy to share the knowledge they have picked up along the way. In addition to the shop, they also offer tons of gear for rent. Anyone serious about outdoor activity knows the value of investing in the right gear, and taking advantage of good rental equipment is a great way to try things out before spending a lot of money. They rent everything from crampons, to tents, to cold weather clothing, and even Avalanche transceivers! This is also a locally owned business, so every bit of money you spend here not only stays in the local community, but it's an investment in the hiking/climbing community as well. These guys are devoted to the outdoors, and they do a lot of good in and out of the shop. I stop by here every time I come through town. Even if I'm not buying anything, it's always worth a stop, just to look around. In a world full of chain stores, IME is a great example of how a small business can still be a real and necessary asset. read more

Tim is amazing. What a delight. Stopped in two mornings in a row to get his detailed and vital beta on our planned climbing for the day. He was happy to talk to us as long as we wanted and gave us all the info we needed. Also gave great advice on exactly which one (1) offset nut to buy - we found several perfect placements for it on our climbs! IME in general is great, a must-stop for climbers visiting the area. Whenever possible, I buy my gear from IME instead of purchasing online and sleep better at night knowing that my money went into bolt replacements, cliff cleanups, and funding the mountain rescue service in the MWV. read more

The Real Deal! This store caters to the true outdoor mountaineering enthusiast. Not a bells and whistles kind of place. Just high end quality goods and a staff with tons of know how. The basement has a consignment shop where you can get a good deal on all kinds of outdoor clothing and equipment. (How about a Gregory backpack for $25) The owners Rick and Celia Wilcox have run over 50 trekking adventures to the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro and the like. International Mountain Equipment is a small outdoors store. They offer rentals here for ice climbing as well as other climbing sports. You can even rent clothes i.e jackets and winter stuff. The staff here is really nice and friendly and equipped us with our gear quick. You can find pretty decent deals here on clothing as well. read more

This is a really fantastic local outdoor gear store. They have a nice selection of the basics and have been our go-to several times for last minute needs before heading out into the backcountry. The regular retail section isn't the most varied, so if you're looking to see every hiking boot on the market side by side, this isn't the place. Definitely check out the all the consignment goodies in the basement -- it's filled with high quality snow pants, rain pants, hiking boots, climbing shoes, helmets, multi-day packs, fleece jackets, etc. The real five star plus plus plus goes to the staff, who have been instrumental in helping us map out some really great backcountry trips when we headed up there for a long weekend without planning. They're the guys who told us about our absolute camping FAVORITE spot (but I'm keeping it a secret!). They're truly a wealth of knowledge about the area and are happy to help. read more

Between their limited selection, bad attitude, and high prices, I'm not sure why people shop here. While they are knowledgeable about outdoors and gear, I find it's easier to get same quality advice from just reading outdoor websites / retailers (backcountry.com or mec.ca), without having to deal with arrogance and Mountain-hipster attitude. And here's my tale of woe: I brought a bunch of stuff there for consignment sales. Then never heard from them. When I checked back, they kept on claiming paperwork was lost, woman who deals with it is on vacation, etc. Then finally owner (who, not to beat around the bush, is simply a jerk in the vein of a mountaineer who makes movies about himself) got back to me and sneeringly said my balance was "only" $65, and someone will cut a check (as if I was being a cheapster for even bothering them about it.) Needless to say I never got the check and just was tired of them. Overall, I think it's worth driving a little farther north to Intervale (Ragged Mountain Equipment) for nicer people, better deals all around (especially on consignment stuff), and much much wider selection of stuff. read more

having worked at rei for over 3 years, been an ems customer for 10+ i am comfortable saying that i know my way around outdoor stores. IME is a different type of outdoor store. it is staffed by their guides (some) and it's family owned and really contributes to the outdoors. the prices may not be the best compared to online stores, but i am more than happy to pay the extra few dollars and support such a store. i was here for 4 days doing an AIARE class and craig the instructor was awesome. super friendly dude that really helped me and my friends better understand avalanche safety. my favorite part about this store is the bargain basement.. the items are not always a bargain, but i was able to find a primaloft vest for 25 (fair price) and a chuck roast vest for FOUR dollars. Excellent shop, great staff, outstanding selection. And they have a consignment shop where you can sell stuff and get some great buys. They can order you almost anything you want and they actually use the stuff they sell. I go out of my way to visit this shop when I'm in the area. read more
