The store carries everything from organic laundry soap to bulk candy (whoo!). Despite the name, they do carry a few non-bulk and prepackaged items, including my beloved Fontaine Sante hummus. The prices are more than competitive, and they beat out the bulk sections of some of the large grocery stores nearby (such as No Frills at Dufferin Mall or the Sobeys at Ossington and Dupont). You'll never want to buy steel cut oats at Whole Foods again! The savings are definitely there, whether you are buying for a large family or just one person. You aren't paying for packaging, marketing, etc. One time, for fun, I compared my bag of whole salted almonds to the prepackaged brand at Shoppers, and the price came out to nearly three dollars more per pound (!) if I had purchased the Life brand. And they were on sale! Spices are another incredible savings, if you only need a few tablespoons of something for one recipe you will pay pennies on the dollar with nothing left to lose its potency while it collects dust in your cabinet for months or years. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They will always check to make sure that they are charging the correct price for your items. I noticed tonight that they just put their staff holiday stockings up, so if you're a regular try to show them some love! There are plenty of people who love this place so much they seem to hang out at the tables up front drinking coffee all the time! Watch out for their limited weekend hours, I have been mid-recipe cooking Sunday dinner and popped over only to have forgotten that they close at 5pm. Recommended buys: Fontaine Sante dips, handmade face and body soaps, veggie pate, grind-it-yourself coffee (I like the Turkish kind). Best value is in spices and staples (rice, beans, etc). Needs some work: Very small cheese/refrigerated selection, not the most kid-friendly store - today I saw a little boy accidentally spill about a quarter pound of pasta on the floor, and I watched in horrified anticipation as he gathered it together if he was going to take it to the trash can or put it back in the bin. Unfortunately the company changed their packaging, minimizing the size, while maintaining the price, I am sure their prices have since gone up. So I stopped. I always think back though whenever I enter pop box's door. How essential they were to my pre cold routine. Thank you! Not only do they have a wide selection of specialty beverages. The Yerba Maté cold drink they offer, is a favourite, they also have a wall of chocolate that is worldly. Their Om Nom chocolate bars are next level! Haven't tried them all, yet; however, so far the Lakkrís and Sea salt is my favourite & the Lakkrís and Raspberries is pretty well up there too. Designed and made in Iceland this specialty chocolate is sure to knock your socks off. To change it up a bit I tried the Om Nom "malt balls" to see if they were just as delicious as the bars. Lo and behold, while just as addictive - the chocolate bars can easily be consumed within an hour, these malt balls arent really malt at all. Unless it's the way things are done in Iceland, as every place of original has their own spin... these were more like cereal balls, covered in Om Nom's amazing chocolate. Kinda disappointing there, however this will not prevent me from purchasing their other flavours of chocolate bars in the future. I will just stay clear of their "malt balls". They do mention crunch on the packaging too, so... that can only be anticipated. Shout outs to Rebecca who went above and beyond to ensure I got my chocolate fix. Rebecca offered to text me when the bars were available at the store. And coordinated with a colleague at their warehouse location... such great customer service from Rebecca and the colleague (apologies I dont recall the name - Christine/Christina (?)). I'm happy to support a local business, their hours are fantastic and the staff is very friendly. Whenever I'm invited out for dinner at a friend's house, I try to stop by here instead of the LCBO. I'm able to bring over funky gifts like NICE, fair-trade coffee, desserts from the Cheese Cake factory, fancy vegan/gluten-free/free-range stacks and whatnot. I think they're a fantastic addition to the neighbourhood.

I noticed this Tufts Your Independent Grocer store and made a mental note of it. I have only visited the Your Independent Grocer store in Pickering and had a wonderful experience. PC Optimum was kind to have me pick up a package of any PC The Decadent line of cookies as my birthday perk. The catch was that I could only get these free cookies from a Your Independent Grocer store. It was the perfect opportunity to check out this grocery store. I came here after work on a Wednesday. There was plenty of parking at this plaza. I got a prime spot steps away from the grocery store's main doors. I backed into the spot and walked in. Drinks and juice greeted me. Prices can be on the higher side. I saw a jug of cranberry juice going for $10. I was here to get some groceries. The produce was healthy. All leafy greens, from romaine lettuce, to spinach, looked fresh and vibrant. I like this store. It's the perfect size. Not too large. Not tiny. Just right to find what I need. There was a prepared foods section that looked good. You can pick up a rotisserie chicken. I was eyeing the sausage rolls. Yum! There was a jovial male staffer at the customer service counter who made my day. While passing by it to get to the cookies, he asked an elderly gentleman if he was of age to buy alcohol. It was sweet and endearing. I didn't buy any ice cream, as I have a few tubs (yep, plural) in my freezer. I know that when I'm ready to restock, I should come here. This store has an extensive ice cream section at various price points an flavours. It also has frozen yogurt, sorbet, sherbet, and dairy-free options to suit your dietary needs. I found my chocolate chunk cookies. I grabbed a package and felt accomplished. The checkout area with humans is charming. I like the street lights. The only downside was dealing with a female staffer at the checkout. I said hi. I got no response from her. Was she having a bad day? It kind of put a damper on my first visit at this store. I got my PC Optimum barcode scanned. The cookies were indeed free. I then paid with a credit card. Easy peasy! When I thanked her, this woman seemed to be in better spirits and actually wished me a good day. Either my positivity finally rubbed off on her or she was indeed trying to get out of a not-so-great day that she was having. I bagged my items. I then headed to my car to put them away before heading home. I liked shopping at this store. It had everything that I needed. It's not exactly a discount grocery store. It's a Metro, so beware, items can be overpriced or certainly more expensive than over "value…read morebranded" supermarkets. Nevertheless, there are plenty of great multi-buy offers, and/or Airmiles rewards for many items. The hot food counter serving pizza slices, sandwiches, wings and other dishes is great for lunch, and reasonably priced. The deli counter has lots of interesting cheeses and meats and there's also a good selection of beers. Staff generally are friendly and helpful, whether you go to one of the cashiers or self-checkout, they're there to help. Despite being surrounded by a multitude of condo high-rises, I've never found the store to be overtly packed with customers. It's good for the location.

I was a bit blown away by the selection of products and the variety of products at this location. they had 5-6 coolers of kombucha all scattered throughout the store. in my travels I was able to find some ice cream that I can't find at my local grocery store, some cheese curds imported from quebec(YEAH BUDDY!) and some other kind of dessert. this location has a fully stocked seafood section with live fish and lobster, as well as a bakery and deli counter. looks maybe deceiving from the outside, but this location is definitely the best in the neighborhood of mimico. this location is serviced by the 501 queen streetcar and the 66B bus im not sure about the parking situation in respect to payment or not? lots of options above or below ground though! no complaints about this metro!

It had small, whole watermelons going for $3.44 each. I also wanted to visit a Food Basics that I had never been to before. I was in the eastern part of Markham. I did a search and found this one roughly ten minutes away. Perfect! It was easy driving over here. I've been to this area a bunch of times this year. This Food Basics is next to Home Depot, and across the parking lot from Michaels. There was lots of parking in front of the store. I backed into a spot and walked over to the main entrance. I like that you don't have to find a coin to unlock a shopping cart. Put your coins away! Rather, if you decide to take this cart home with you, the cart will freeze when you are away from its home base. Plants greeted me as I approached the entrance. They were colourful and pretty. I got the produce and fruit sections when I first walked in, which I needed. The celery was in fine condition. Folks shopping here seem to love watermelon. There was one left. I snagged it. It was heavy. I had a feeling that it was a good one. Everything else that I bought felt like bonuses. I got my watermelon. Mission accomplished! I liked the reduced pricing on watermelon and pineapple spears. Nothing was wrong with them. I looked at the expiration dates. They would give me enough time to devour them at my leisure. They were naturally sweet and delicious. I got ground pork meat that was reasonably priced. I also got pork link sausages. I've used both of them to make burgers and a breakfast skillet, respectively. Yummy and of good quality. It was sad to see a stand for bubbles (I'm guessing it's boba) in yogurt. That combination has always intrigued me. I felt that paying $4 to get the product itself was a bit much. I need a sale! Six-pack bottles of Diet Pepsi were cheap here. They were all between the frozen food fridges, which was weird to me. This store has Limca! I love this Indian drink that tastes much better than Sprite. I wish it came in a sugar-free form, but indulging now and again is okay. I went to line up to pay for my items. I got a loud, obnoxious cashier. Her voice and the volume at which she spoke gave me a dull headache and I was only there for maybe five minutes. Sadly, the couple in front of me took some time to pay and pack their items. This cashier had an obsession with thank-you stickers. When I took away my six-pack of Diet Pepsi, she seemed so offended that I didn't let her put a sticker on it. You put a sticker one this six-pack of pop, but not my twelve-pack of canned Diet Pepsi. I don't get the inconsistency. You clearly didn't run out of thank-you stickers. Perhaps you should have. My watermelon got a sticker. Maybe you need a sticker to thank yourself for using thank-you stickers so randomly. I got my Moi barcode scanned off my phone. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and was done. I packed all my items in my reusable bags. I then left as fast as I could, to stop my head from aching. It felt so much better heading to my car. No grating cashier voice with a bunch of orange thank-you stickers to haunt me. The fresh air also helped. I liked shopping here. Well first things first, it's still really new! It's located next to the Home Depot but other than that, its parking lot is not really shared with anyone else so parking was a breeze. There were a lot of carts on our way in including ones that are fun for toddlers since they had cars they could sit in. As you enter, there are some deals to check out which we kind of just passed by and regretted not looking at until we were leaving. Once you're inside the store, you'll find yourself in the produce section. To your left you'll find baskets for lighter shopping trips and kid-sized carts. These carts are kinda cool since they have a tall flag attached to it so you can keep an eye on them from farther away. The aisles in the produce section were a little bit squishy. The carts seem like they're wider than at other grocery stores so two of them passing by each other is really tight and we'd often have to wait for someone else to go before we could maneuver out. All of the displays were stacked neatly and everything looked really fresh and clean. We did pick up a few cartons of blueberries which were only $1.67 each. Normally they're at least $2.50 when I get them at Metro on sale! The rest of the store had more spacing between the aisles which made navigating around a little bit easier. The Food Basics store brand are the Selection items which are almost always a better deal than the national brands. We were able to get 3 200g bags of Selection chips for $4 whereas the Lays chips in 250g bags were 2 for $5. Marginally cheaper. Whatever, a deal is a deal. I'll take it and get to try more flavours lol. When we got to checkout that process also went smoothly. Each of the checkout lanes has the bagging item area separated into two for maximum efficiency. You do have to bag your own groceries. We definitely found a few great deals and the shopping experience was pleasant and stress free. Loblaws better watch out and Metro might regret having their low cost competitor in town!

So with a holiday Sunday on hand and pretty much everything closed and a need to pickup a dessert this visit and location made it an easy choice. For starters lets get this out of the way they are geared towards the high end so be prepared to pay $$$. Now where they redeem themselves is the quality of prepped food and variety. This store is decent sized and offers a decent space to show their large variety. Decent produce as well. I had heard good things about their baked and prepped items (chicken pot pie got high praise from the foodie forum). Not wanting to roam around long (hey a (K)N95 or not I am not risking anything by staying longer than I need to indoors) grabbed strawberry rhubarb pie and a tatziki for drop off (both got good reviews). I got to try a piece of the pie the next day and found it to be decent as it has good/few ingredients. Their potato chips are made in house and were tempting despite the high $. I had to look the other way at check out line as covid lbs are already piling up. So visit this store but hold on to your wallet as well as things will add up real quick.

Went here last week and the security guard spoke to someone I went with, asked if we lived in the same house, that person said yes, yet the distinction is, we live in separate apartments within the house. I was waiting outside, in the line, while the other person I came with went in, I didn't receive proper communication from the security guard to let me know why I was waiting outside, as those behind me went in ahead of me, 3 people all at once in fact. Their capacity is small, 13, so it's a capacity that I would think fills up relatively quickly. It wasn't until after all 3 people went in that I inquired as to why. There was a severe misunderstanding as the person I went there with said we live in the same household, even though we reside in different apartments within the house, which would then mean we live in different households. After I clarified with the security guard, I was granted entry and there was no apology at all from her (assuming they identify in this way). Perhaps she didn't feel it was warranted, I don't know what was going on in this person's mind, or other factors that may have influenced either their performance or overall persona that day. I understand these days people who have positions that are security guards, gatekeepers and the like are doing there jobs by asking the questions outlined by the government of Canada and maintaining so, with a serious demeanour. However there is a nice way to go about doing that, you can be friendly and still do your job. Unfortunately that was not my experience here and it's extremely off putting. Communication to me is the most important thing and it happened later than was ideal. It could be listed on the Summerhill Market sign, "one per household", yet that's not even mentioned. And it's important so other people, and everyone really knows. The same thing happened to two others as I was exiting, only one of them could come in to shop, I get it, it's a small location, with a small capacity and why bring 2 people when really only 1 is needed (according to the government), yet this is just another way to individualize our society and separate the togetherness even within households and families, whos to say that those two people who came in after I left, who were older, needed to make decisions together, you know? even partners preparing meals? sometimes it's nice to be able to have a second opinion. Overall, the security guard could've come out and chatted with me too, to verify or confirm the information she was provided. It seemed to be a little awkward and confusing and I actually don't understand why she didn't come out to communicate anything. I have to say, aside from this little less than favourable encounter, SummerHill does have a rather large and interesting collection of a variety of foods. Their assortment of organic spices is rather large, their array of baked goods is impressive. Although I would warn, some of their labels to not be accurate, look out for the price listed for one item, when they clearly have 2 items in a bag, ie their cheese buns. I mainly came here the other day for something they no longer even carry, the ELXR juices, apparently they went out of business, through no fault of Summerhill Market, yet that was disappointing, as my intention for visiting wasn't even fulfilled and I turned out to have a pretty shitty experience. And here's a review of their seafood soup from a friend: SEAFOOD (?) SOUP !? Summer hill market stinks! I'm not sure what kind of chefs' they have preparing their meal take aways, but they are awfully bland and rather expensive! They describe themself as a 'high quality specialty shop' and the only thing special about it is their outrageous prices! Purchased an overpriced 1L jar of prepared seafood hot and sour soup. 1) $14, when I can get a 1L jar of soup elsewhere for $7.50 2) Calling the soup seafood is deception as there are only tiny shrimps and fishpaste.
