First off, the museum is free, which is great for anyone with base access who is interested in learning more. All they request is that you fill out a visitor's log. The museum covers Schofield's history from when the area was originally surveyed on up through Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts with many actual items. I was particularly intrigued by the early history of the base. My only gripe during this visit was the organization of the facility. Things seemed a bit out of order chronologically with little direction on where to go next. Overall, this museum, is well worth a visit and took approximately 1.5 hrs to go through each of the exhibits.

There is a pre-school called Armed Services YMCA that you could put your child in, a community pool for Island Palm residents, a car selling lot, a small and quaint bowling alley, and a small PX. I believe the Navy housing is farther back behind Wiliwili. The park is well kept. I'd recommend this area of you're ever stationed here and there is an opening.

I Remember when we first got stationed here my husband said to me Wheeler army airfield? Isn't that the first place to get hit before Pearl Harbor? Yes, yes it was. There's interesting historical signs about it On the main road by the big gray building and others in the pink Amelia Airhart hanger on the airfield. Many of the homes and hangers that got hit still have the bullet holes in them as historical landmarks. So we live here with respect and humility from the past & excitement about the future. This base is small but friendly & traffic isn't as bad as Schofield in my opinion. AVOID crossing between bases if you can in the morning. It will add an hour to your day. Wheeler has a wonderful new small bowling alley (only 4 lanes) with yummy food beer & free pool Thursday & Friday. Unfortunately due to sequestration they are not able to be open on other days At this time. It was built for the barracks next-door but tends to attract more of an older and family crowd. There are nondenominational Christian worship services at Wheeler Chapel 11 am Sunday's with Potlucks every first Sunday. Pagans meet in the church 1 Friday/mth although I hear it's basically a bunch of young gaming kids and probably not super religious. The Community Center behind the chapel has a pool, Small fitness center, and small movie theater you can reserve for parties. There are several great playgrounds all over the base. There is A barbershop, a bank, a delicious DFAC, shoppette, and a gym in and around the big gray building. The only gas station is on Schofield. All of the housing is pretty awesome in my opinion including the older historical WWII housing (except for poor Camp Stover in the back.) Make sure to make your way over to Schofield on the weekends for the KoleKole (sp?) Pass Hike. It's open to the public usually too. It's only .8 mi one way & doable with small kids & the views are phenomenal. I'm going to leave here with such fond memories! And those Mountain View's?! Breathtaking!! Historically Hawaiian Warriors trained on this plateau also (as they still do as part of the Hawaii National Guard.) Don't miss out on learning about the local Hawaiian history while you're here. I recommend the Shakka app if you're driving around the area. And while you're at it, stop at Zippy's and get some local food and donuts, it's kind of like a Hawaiian Denny's. Dole is only 2 Miles up the road for visiting family & tourists. We also make a great 'Gateway to the North Shore .'Last, all the helicopter & air traffic doesn't bother my family & we can't hear much in our house. The membership was for 2 adults and up to 4 kids, and also has discounts for other exhibits. After a quick sweep through the museum, and a wary observation of the flight simulator, the grandson decided it was time to eat. I got the Blue Angels Burger and he got the kids hot dog meal. I'd say the prices were reasonable, considering how much takeout and restaurant food costs these days. The burger was fat as hell and the dog wasn't Costco sized but definitely satisfied the kid. I didn't get pics of the food because I was too enthralled over the size of the patty! We spent the day also visiting the Mighty Mo, the Virtual Reality tour, and gift shop shopping also.

Plan accordingly because while the buses run every 15 minutes, you need to wait. The museum is $30 entry fee but keep in mind 3/4 of the museum is currently closed for renovation. For $30 it is a bit pricey but because of the buses and the amount of employees, i understand the high price tag. 2 stars. The deep history and the significance of this place and the men and women that gave their lives makes this a 5 star must see to show your respect. Museum: very small but well done with restored planes recovered from the war. There was a Blue Angels pilot shared his experience. I was able to catch the last 5 minutes. The employees are very knowledgeable and willing to share stories. I read everything and was done in roughly 45 minutes. The museum is very small - 4 stars. Here is my recommendation: Come the visitor center it is free. Check that out and read everything. See the Submarine from the outside because it is free. Then jump on the bus because it is free. While you are driving to the warship, you pass the Arizona Memorial. Snap a photo and show your respect. Get off at the warship. Walk around the warship it is free. Then jump back on the bus and go to the Aviation museum. Again free. Walk around the outside and see the airplanes it is free. There is a gigantic helicopter it is free. Go to the back and look in the backside to get perspective. Then just back on the bus and go back to the visitor center it is free. If anyone says anything to you, go to the cafe/restaurant across from the Aviation Museum.

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for new stamp designs, but that's just fine because snail mail is a lost art, and there's nothing quite like receiving a handwritten letter or a thoughtful card in the mail. They're well-stocked with plenty of flat-rate boxes, mailers, and envelopes, so it's easy to get everything you need. Parking is convenient, and the open-air concept of the building is my absolute favorite--it's such a refreshing experience. While they're closed on the weekends (all post offices are closed on Sundays, but this one also closes on Saturdays), it's not a problem--I just jog over to the Wahiawa Post Office when needed. Coming from San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles traffic regular - I love this highway system -…read morebasically there are three highways 1, 2 and 3. I get so confused in large cities with highways that look like spaghetti. Sitting in traffic for hours to go nowhere is something I now accept as a California resident - and coming here is refreshing. I don't care how bad it gets - its nothing compared to the worst in the world. First thing you do from the airport is hop on highway 1. Took the rental car for a little test drive on this road to see how it did. You take this East and West to Honolulu - and if your a tourist - that's probably where your headed. Also took a short trip to the Pearl Harbor memorial using this highway. Also a super quick trip. Really its all such short distances I think not renting a car is probably smartest as hotel fees for parking nightly - and we had two unnecessary cars going nowhere. It's all such a scenic place to be. A normal trip on the highway in my hometown is horrible. Unpleasant - breathing in pollution and ugly sights... but not here. I guess who's to say my rental car unnecessary? I enjoyed it and the feel behind the wheel and the sense of freedom just knowing it was parked steps away ready to go.
