We drove out to Pine River. They were closed during their regular hours. We called Henning's…read more They didn't answer their phone. Where to get some cheese? I remember Zutz's from decades ago. The building is well worn. There was a flag outside that said "open". The store didn't look like it was open. Went inside, it's kind of dark. A friendly fellow came down the stairs and turned the lights on. There was one cooler that was chocked full of various cheeses, cheddar, Asiago, and Swiss, oh my. We were attracted to the ghost pepper cheese. We were warned it's not for the weak. After getting it home we found it really good. This is a low key little store that sells cheese and various Wisconsin gift type items. You will get into a conversation with the owner, who is a nice guy. When it came to pay for our cheese we were informed that the store hasn't joined the 21st century yet, as they don't take any plastic. We drove to a nearby Kwik Trip to hit an ATM. Bottom line, this is not a big store like the other cheese places in the area. But the place does have wonderful cheese; and it is worthy of patronage. Bring cash.

It's an unpretentious little place with a single refrigerated case. But that case was well stocked with maybe 40-50 varieties of local and Wisconsin cheeses. Plenty to choose from without being overwhelming. The owner was a nice guy who offered cheese suggestions as well as advice on getting the cheese home in my carryon bag. Walked out with $60 bucks of cheese to share with the folks back in Virginia.

A friend of mine was going to Oshkosh so I asked him to get me a variety of chocolates. I asked him…read moreto get me three pounds. I live about 200 miles away, but he's from Milwaukee so it made sense and I appreciate it. Anyway, it was the end of the season so they were only selling pre-boxed creams and nuts inn1 lb. boxes. These were the best chocolates I've ever had. Not a bad one in any of the boxes. No pinks, or oranges, or lemons. Just the ones I love. Maple creams, coconut, vanilla, chocolate and then the nutty ones were fabulous. I like dark chocolate over milk chocolate but both were really good. I plan to visit Oshkosh in the next several weeks (for the first time), so I will definitely stop in at Hughes for a few pounds. I may actually get more than 3 lbs. because they freeze real well for future delights. I'm not sure what else there is to do in Oshkosh, but Hughes is gonna be on the list for sure.

I'm sorry to have to update my review and lower my rating. Their chocolates are top notch.I…read moreappreciate that this family run business is still here, after decades. My family has been going there for since I was a young child; I won't say how many decades. I may be ending a long-standing tradition of making the annual family pilgrimage to Hughes. I feel that success has gone a bit to their heads, and they are a bit "pissy." I am rating them at a three for now, since their chocolate is undeniably fantastic, and I am also considering that perhaps they are stretched thinly. We all have our breaking point. Last year I think I spent $800 there, less than the year before--specifically because they were out of stock on many of the items I wanted. I was partially to blame, because I had waited too long. But not this year. I called today to pre-pay for some chocolates so that I wouldn't make the drive for nothing, and so that I could avoid the congested basement and be on my way. I figured on buying 25-40 pounds this year, depending on what they had. To their credit, they answered the phone. But I was told that I would need to commit to 75 pounds before they would consider taking a prepaid phone order. They aren't open on Sunday, so I was told I'd need to visit in the next couple days if I wanted toffees before they sold out. "First come first serve." I kind of get it, but I kind of don't. $500-$800 isn't enough for them to bother with me--message received. Yeah, this is the second year in a row I sensed their attitude is overly confident to the point where they no longer have to be friendly. At all. About five years back, I called to inquire if they offered any type of corporate program discount for people sending their chocolates as client gifts. I send out 240+ boxes to my clients each year during the holidays. I was cut off mid sentence by the guy who took the call, and it was clear they were not interested in anything like that. So I went somewhere else. This year, I don't think I'm even going to make the trip for family gifts. So...Hello Oaks Candies, my friend. You're a bit more expensive, but your chocolate is equally as good, you're open on Sundays, and I don't get the arrogant attitude from you.
