We took a quick detour to peek inside this place before we got back on the road. Beautiful woodwork inside the display case and seating areas really amplifies the experience. The old fashioned ice cream counter would be fun to enjoy during warmer months, it was somewhat cold outside, so we settled on a few to-go treats instead. The mix is basically leftover chocolate shavings and makes for a delicious cup of hot chocolate. They also offer a ton of molded chocolates. An old-fashioned candy parlor. They are known for their chocolate candy mold creations, unique dining experience, and a creative list of Sundaes. We were welcomed with a nice greeting and given space to enjoy all the creations behind the glass case. I purchased a bar of Bernstein's almond sea salt for $5.22. I also took advantage of a scale for a penny that gave my weight and a fortune. That was fun but the scale was off by 10lbs lololol well that is my story and I am sticking to it. There was a dining room in the back I was told served soup and sandwiches. We didn't stay only bought some candy to go. The establishment felt very historic and authentic. Tight quarters can get crowded quickly but the line moved quickly so you didn't have to wait long. Nice stop for some good hard candies, and chocolates. read more

Having had chocolates from here for YEARS from my grandparents and parents, I finally decided that I needed to stop in myself! Located right in the heart of downtown Manitowoc, it was a nice little walk! Couldn't miss the entrance with their awesome neon sign! You could also smell the enticing aroma of chocolate before you even get through the front door :) I was surprised to see a fun back dining area, I had no idea! Definitely would be a fun spot to catch up with friends or bring family/kids. I picked up my favorites, chocolate covered raisins and malted milk balls! I will say that as it was my first time purchasing the items myself, I was a little surprised at the pricing, but it is high quality and homemade, so you get what you pay for! A true confectionary! Feels like a step back in time. All your classic sweet needs from malt floats to chocolate molded treats. We enjoyed a hot fudge sundae and chocolate cookie dough custard at one of their tables--so good! It seems everything from the recipes to the decor is as it was when it first opened in 1932. Even the kitchen had copper mixers and frosted glass light fixtures. All the sugar candies and chocolate are made with care and detail. We bought a bag of cherry candies on the wire--you won't find gems like that at most candy stores. Prices were affordable. Wouldn't mind coming back here for lunch, they serve sandwiches too. We saw Beerntsten featured on "Around the Corner" and we're both like "what? How did we miss an old-timey candy shop in Manitowoc?" So we made it a point to stop on a recent weekend drive. Though Beerntsen is right on the main drag, it does fly under the radar - the storefront is relatively unassuming and easy to walk right by. That all changes when you walk in the door - you'll be greeted by the smell & sight of chocolatey delights and experience an intact antique interior. All the cases, woodwork and beautiful wood booths are original and impeccably maintained. The back half of the store is an ice cream parlour where you can get sundaes, phosphates, malts and other frozen treats. The Mister had a chocolate malt, and liked it but wished for a stronger malt flavor. I had a S'Mores sundae and really liked it - it was just the right mix of each ingredient. Service was friendly but a little slow. If you don't want ice cream you can get simple sandwiches and soup too. Be aware that the candy part of the store is very cramped and isn't fun to be in when there's more than a few people inside. read more

Chocolate fudge sauce was just OK, lacked flavor and thickness, not up to the quality of the ice cream. They make cute molded chocolates which are very nicely done, but I would not put them in the "artisanal" category. The ambiance will take you back 100 years - really a fun experience. This was such a neat little discovery. I'm not from Wisconsin, but my mother-in-law works not too far from this place. When I was up visiting, she took my girlfriend and I here for lunch, and it was a lovely enough experience. It has a really nice atmosphere to it, old-fashioned without being outdated. It's a classic. There's a candy shop in the front, and a soda fountain/restaurant in the back. My favorite was by far the meal. I ordered a grilled cheese with tomato soup, and it was so good. If Wisconsin knows how to do one thing, it's cheese. I also got a raspberry phosphate, and it was amazing. I love that you can taste the difference when something is made the old, good way by hand. It makes all the difference. The chocolate store up front is neat too. It has long display counters and tables full of pre-wrapped confections. The chocolate is good, but it's a bit expensive for my blood. I'm lucky that my mother-in-law spoils us by randomly bringing them home for us, because I wouldn't spend very much here, at least not often. It's worth going in for the nostalgia alone, but I recommend staying for a meal. The chocolate is good and handmade, but to me not all the items are worth the price. I have been coming here since I was a child (that would've been 30+ years ago). We come here for the ice cream sundaes. I usually get either the turtle sundae or the brownie sundae. The turtle sundae is a Carmel sundae with pecans and a shot of chocolate fudge on the side. Dad always gets the opera sundae (chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup and marshmallow topping). What makes the sundaes so great is the quality of the ingredients. The ice cream is hard dip. The hot fudge and caramel are made in house (be sure to buy a jar of each to take home - you have to ask for it). The brownie is moist and has a thick fudge frosting. They also serve food - mainly deli sandwiches. I had a sandwich once awhile back and remember it being good. I haven't checked the current menu recently. Many people visit to buy chocolate or candy. You can see from the photos that there is an abundance of sweets. If you need something custom (for a business or wedding, for example), they can do that. All the chocolate is pricy, but worth it! We had heard about this place from relatives who live in Manitowoc, so after dinner one night during our visit, we decided to give them a workout. My wife loves a good turtle sundae, and my son always requests a banana split, even though he'd never finish one on his own. I decided to help him out, so we split the split. The whole experience was pretty much perfect. The folks at the counter were helpful and polite. The store is very old-school - reminds me of my youth with the wooden booths and the gauntlet of homemade chocolate delights on the way to them. More importantly, the desserts were excellent. My son plowed his way through way more than his 50% of the banana split. My wife said the turtle sundae might have been the best she's ever had. Seems like a home run to me. If we're back in Manitowoc, I can't imagine missing Beerntsen's. read more

My husband and I arrived in Manitwoc to go antiquing (or should I say, I went antiquing, he followed me around, waiting for lunch). We walked up and down 8th street, checking all over Yelp for the absolute best place to fill our bellies after sifting through dusty stores and damp basements. We went in to one place, they were closed. Went into another, saw a chef picking his nose, left immediately. After I was about to give up and literally drive down the road to - GASP - McDonald's - he saw a sign "Lunches" in front of a candy store. Now, I don't like candy. Not even a little bit. I usually don't even like chocolate or ice cream. I realize this makes me a freak of society, so naturally I said, "Um, no." I figured "Lunches" meant, candy sprinkled on top of more candy. But my stomach growled in protest and I gave in. When we walked inside, my eyes adjusted and suddenly everything was in black & white, I looked down and was suddenly wearing a poodle skirt, and my hubby had on a leather jacket and slicked-back hair. Ok not really, but this place looks like it found a time vortex and stayed there. The back of the narrow shop is where you are seated for full-service "Lunches." They were AMAZING! Incredibly priced, homemade, and quite filling. I had THE BEST POTATO SALAD I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF EATING AT THIS FINE ESTABLISHMENT. It was a tiny portion, but I would have ordered a plate full of it. Creamy, thinly sliced potatoes, not over-loaded with too much egg, and just the right amount of spice. Heaven. I had their homemade tomato-bisque, which was surprisingly sweet, and folded in was chunks of bleu cheese. Wow. I paired it with the oh-so-classy grilled cheese and went to town. I even tried their homemade cherry lemonade and it was, too, perfect. Not too tart, not too sweet. I must have eaten magic, because afterwards I even ordered an ice-cream cone. That - never happens. If I am ever in Eastern Wisconsin, or anywhere near it, I will be coming back. **Bonus points, I saw the workers sitting in back, literally hand-packaging their chocolate bars. What a find! We stopped on a whim and this historic space retains beautiful atmosphere. I felt like I could almost step back in time and see gentlemen hanging their hats and trench coats from the elegant hooks atop the gorgeous wooden booths. We took a seat at one of said booths and I ordered a half ham salad sandwich on marble rye, a cup of tomato bisque and a chocolate malt. The malt was so thick I couldn't get it through the straw at first, but had just the right amount of malt flavoring. The ham salad was delicious and the bread was nicely toasted but not basted in any butter or oil, which was fine. We stopped in as part of the Open Air Tours event for convertibles. This was not a stop on the tour, but we enjoyed a wonderful detour. The smell of so much deliciousness when you walk in is well worth the stop. As we perused the goodies, we noticed free truffles were available for visitors. Bonus! So very delicious! We also enjoyed a sample of the ice cream. What really makes Beerntsen's worth the trip, however, is its seating. Its turn of the century and beautifully maintained. One can imagine generations of visitors doing the exact same thing we did while visiting here.
