What kinda TWILIGHT ZONE crap is this?!?! In my 58 years, I have NEVER in my life dealt with a credit union like this...I had purchased an RV from a local business and unfortunately Intrepid in Helena, MT was who they had finance it...everything was fine at first with having the months of payment coupons, but when it came time to order them, it was a nightmare. It took months to get them last year after making several calls, and this year I had called months in advance for them to generate future payment coupons, and twice they sent me the ones that I already had. Finally, on the morning of March 24, 2025, I called and spoke with an arrogant supervisor at their call center. Trying to explain the situation to was impossible to this know-it-all! For some bizarre reason they have to have a 3rd party from Texas generate the payment coupons and the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, and they have no way of tracking the status of the payment coupons that take 3 weeks for them to mail. I have one payment coupon left. After getting off the phone with the condescending supervisor I went to my local credit union and refinanced my trailer. I really didn't appreciate that rude POS talking down to me, he can kiss my @**! He was the straw that broke the camel's back. This is a perfect example of why everyone shouldn't receive a participation trophy...this poor excuse of a supervisor needs to revisit his customer service class! Banked here for 10 years absolutely worst bank in Helena. Even after 4 times arranging a payment to purchase my vacation my wifes and my card got denied every time 4 different days. I have never heard of a financial institution that posts withdrawals before posting deposits. Be careful if you have any payments that come out the day you get paid, this FI will post the withdrawals first, overdraft your account, and then post the deposits and not return your unnecessary overdraft fee(s). Anything they can do to get themselves a couple extra bucks. Would not recommend to anyone. read more

Literally the worst bank I've ever used. Trying to contact the customer service line and wait on the line for almost an hour. It's like they put a recording that goes on forever and nobody picks up the phone. There's also no way on their app to put a travel notice on your cards. My late husband and I have been a member since the late 80s. Every time I leave the vicinity, I make sure to call them to open up my card for use in other states. Last time I traveled to Denver to see my son, I called and spoke to a young man who reassured me that it was "good to go." I should have never trusted that. I get to Denver and am met with declined declined declined. They "forgot" to do what I had asked. I was stuck in a big city with very little funds and actually had to borrow from my son- who is a student. They try to "keep" you on a daily limit. I've told them time and time again that I don't need a daily limit, or budget. I told them the week of my son and future DIL's wedding to pull the stupid limit off because I was paying for some bigger items and needed the funds available that I earned. Nope- I go to pay the bar tab at the rehearsal dinner and guess what- declined. Had to panic and find a different method that I wasn't expecting to have to do. This has happened so many times. Another time I was waiting in the drive up line, it was right before closing. As the car in front of me drove off, and it was my turn at the banking window, the girl said "we are closed" and shut the draw curtain of the drive up window on me!!!!! This generation hired at that bank doesn't give two shits about listening or customer service. I just closed out a CD and am working on moving the rest of my funds to Stockmans Bank. I started banking with Helena Community Credit Union in 1984. They were great - always helpful, never a problem. That has sadly changed drastically over the years. I helped my daughter open an account with them about a year ago and it has been nothing short of a comedy of errors. She's been locked out of her account for over a month, and all we get is the same response, which never works. Getting real assistance from anyone is a hopeless quest. We'll be switching all of our banking to a real bank very soon. read more

I received a new loan through the dealership with these clowns and it has been nothing but a problem. I couldn't set up automatic payments until I went into the bank. Then when I went into the bank for the first payment they applied the payment to the wrong month which caused me get get an outrageous fee on all the future payment because all the payments now a month behind. I talked with a manager lady there and there was no common sense. She was extremely combative and rude. I will be changing my loan to another bank and will never go to Intrepid. No surprise here that their reviews are so poor!! read more

Intrepid is really good at locking out access to on-line banking. And website gives no indication that the account is locked out. So you try and try again to log in and still get no information. Even after you call and they tell you why you can't access your account, you will remain locked out. read more

If I could find a "no star review I would give it. The reason we started with the Credit Union was because our best bank in the world sold out to 1str Interstate. I HATE big Corporate Banks! We loved the service and customer care we got from our bank "Mountain West Bank" So we go interview the Helena Credit Union. Everything fit, we wanted home town service not the bull....well your debits and credits were just seconds off...so too bad cha ching $30 OD fee, Even tho my account statement shows well over the amount of money needed to cover all transactions. We got great service and they took good care of us we have had over $250,000. in trasactions with Helena Credit Union. Now it is INTREPID....the worst! A few days ago we got a check for $35,000 fro our insurance company to cover damage we had. I deposited in account at INTREPID and proceeded to write checks and online transfer to contractors. Low and behold I get a statement from INTREPID a few weeks later and I see that they have charged me $90. in overdraft charges. Well! it's in the INTREPID corporate rules that they can withhold checks for up to 10 days before releasing funds! oops! I missed that bull ---- when Helena Credit Union became another corporate bank! So even tho I deposited and check from Hartford Insurance Company for $35,000, they decided to withhold funds for 10 days.....I had three transactions all of which were in more that $1,000 overdraw......I was livid! but too bad I should have known all the rules of Intrepid....I mistakenly assumes they would be the quality of operation in knowing their clients and recognizing Hartford is not going to send out invalid check. They just wanted to hold the large cash amount in their bank for their profits. Today I took a check down for $55,000 from the sale of our Motor Home. They tell me because it is such a large amount and our account shows we do not have amounts being deposited, they will need to hold the funds for 10 days, would that be acceptable he said to me??? Nope! give me the check and the balance of funds in all three of our accounts and I will go elsewhere! Guess what? they could release the funds today! we are heading to Stockmans Bank....a MOntana owned bank! read more

I have banked with this bank for almost 30 years but it is no longer the community bank I used to appreciate. It has big world dreams and charges outrageous fees to match. It never seems to accept changes in your account. I had to try three times to fix something using their docusign system and finally had to go into the bank to force them to fix the minor account issue. you can't talk to anyone on weekends or nights about your debit card. I'm not sure what happened when they changed from the Helena community Credit union to Intrepid (an dumb name probably created by some out of state marketing firm with No sense of Montana. It makes me cringe every time I see it written). I'm sick of their incompetence and high fees. I'm going elsewhere after a lifetime of banking with them. I'm sure I can do better. read more

Not impressed at all! If I could give negative stars I would. This credit union lacks technology conveniences. They charge $10.00 to do a payment over the phone. So that's a HUGE inconvenience to me and a rip off. It doesn't cost that much to process a debit or even a credit payment for a small business yet alone a larger corporation. They say one thing and then realize they make a mistake and I had to pay more. If they were to manage things properly and back their word they would have honored the original amount said. THANK goodness I paid my loan in full in 3 months instead of the 3 years as originally established. I wouldn't want to deal with this institution that long, a serious ball and chain that would be. I have never had a problem with my accounts and if I did, I am certain they would get it straight in no time. Chad handled my last car loan and it was a pleasure working with him. A new CU from Helena set up an branch on Main St Bozeman in Q1 2019. The staff is friendly and egger to help. New accounts require a hard check which is hit to the credit report. No drive thru banking which can be inconvenient. Hopefully, they can outshine the other CUs in town. read more

We've never been happy to leave a financial institution before, but this was one time where we were glad to dump our banking accounts. We felt like this was more of a big bank in terms of fees and costs than a credit union (we've been solely with credit unions for 30 years). The tellers can't make many account decisions, so they have to call the accountants/officers and apparently the accountants/officers who make decisions don't appear to talk directly with the client on any of the 10 occasions we needed assistance, so it's always this giant game of 'telephone'--with miscommunications and rigmarole to get anything accomplished. This process of indirect communication also happens through email communication as well. They are convenient in town, and the tellers were friendly enough for some positives, but generally not a place we liked to do business with. read more

I purchased a new vehicle from Helena motors and financed it through Helena Valley Credit union. I began getting letter saying they had no record of my insurance. (My insurance was in full force) I'd go into the office on Euclid and endured the insouciance of the clerks and gresolce the issue. A month or two later, the same procedure would happen again. The only way I got it stopped was to go to the finance manager at Helena Toyota and have him intervene. Supposedly, they had corrected the problem. A year ago, purchased vehicle from Helena Toyota and after lots of arm twisting, by then financed it through Helena Valley Credit Union. Now, same deal is starting over- Letters saying they don't have any record of my insurance. If anyone from HVC has an issue with this review, I would be glad to speak to you in person. These people are totally unprofessional, don't care, and defend themselves with arrogance. read more

BEWARE OF INTREPID CREDIT UNION!!!! 5/14/20 - I had one of my debtors take my payment out of my checking account twice this month causing my checking account to go into the negative. When I noticed this, I saw that Intrepid Credit Union charged me an overdraft fee of $28.00, SIX different times, totaling $168. I have overdraft protection so, I called them and had someone look at my account. She explained to me that yes, I did have overdraft protection but, THEY had set it up to pull from the wrong savings account. They had it set up to pull from my regular savings, not my Kasasa savings, which is where all of my money is. She was going to report all of this to her management/accounting department. This was the morning of Tuesday, May 12th. I hadn't heard anything back so, I looked at my account and I see ONE credit of $28.00 so, I called them again. Spoke with the same girl, to which she says to me, "accounting said that you should call whoever took your payment twice." I said okay BUT, that is irrelevant if I have OVERDRAFT protection!!!!!! Because there was more than enough money in my savings account to cover this. This is not my fault as Intrepid set it up wrong!!! So she said that she would have the manager call me on Wednesday morning. I waited, and waited, and waited. No call. So I called them yesterday afternoon and spoke with the same girl. She puts me on hold and finally comes back and said, they said that they'll reverse FOUR of the SIX charges. I asked "why only four when this is Intrepid's fault?" Of course, she can't answer that for me. This is unacceptable to me because Intrepid had the overdraft protection set up wrong and this is THEIR FAULT. So, once again, she was going to have a manager call me late yesterday afternoon or this morning. At 3:00 p.m. Still NO CALL BACK. Once again, I call them. The girl who I had been speaking with was on another line, of course. So the poor girl who answers said she talked to the manager and they WILL NOT refund me the $56.00 that they still owe me for THEIR MISTAKE!!!!!! I asked to speak to a manager. Of course, they are busy but, one of them will call me back. I'm not holding my breath. Now you're up to speed. So now I will have to take time off of work to go there and finally get to speak to a manager. Needless to say, I will be closing my account with Intrepid Credit Union. I was a customer at Elkhorn Credit Union for over 20 years before, Intrepid took them over and NEVER had any issues. Elkhorn CU should still be in business and Intrepid should be the one closed down according to the way they take care of their customers. WHAT A JOKE!!!!! read more

I have always found the people at HCCU extremely helpful and professional. They take the time to answer questions and go through each step personally. Their rates are fair and their service is hometown and friendly. During their recent computer conversion, the branches were open on a Saturday and the president of the Credit Union was present to over see this complex transition. I wouldn't consider banking anywhere else. read more

This is the worst bank I have EVER had the misfortune of dealing with!! Something went wrong with my direct deposit for my pay check and I was given a paper check, I went through the drive through on a Friday afternoon to cash it. I asked for it to be cashed and a few minutes later they asked me for my account number, I gave it to them, a few more minutes later they sent me a deposit slip. I sent it back asking for cash. They said I had to wait for the rep that had originally helped me to fix the transaction. I finally go my cash after waiting a total of 32 minutes! When I was leaving I called and left a message that they need to work on their customer service and speed and it was really effed up that it took them so long just to cash a check. I didn't leave a name or number on my message because I was so angry. Monday morning I got a call from the "customer service supervisor" Becky, she said "well if I don't hear back from you by 2:30 I'll just cancel your account and send you the balance in the mail since we are so terrible!" I was absolutely appalled by this message. I didn't call her back and I got my cancellation check in the mail the next day. Never going back there!!!! read more

I haven't had any real issues with HCCU. The branch I went to was usually always speedy as far as deposit and transactions. A few times I had to wait extended time to see the loan officer but that's to be expected, can't determine how long the people before you are gonna take. I have had an account there for around 2 years and refinanced my car loan through them with a 2% lower apr. The employees always made me feel like a valuable member of the bank and always happy and helpful with any questions I had. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star review is because I had accidently made a credit card payment out of my HCCU account instead of my primary account and they agreed to reverse the overdraft fees for me (after the account be brought current of course) but they used MyPoints to do so, which is fair it was completely my mistake, but I've never had an overdraft with them and a lot of institutions will reverse your first one as a courtesy. I usually went to the one on Fee street and my loan officer was the best there! read more

I don't understand how this credit union is in business. The people treat you like you are lucky to be banking there, especially the manager. It's a small town so I don't understand how they get away with their attitude. Mistakes are made on even the simplest transactions. Do yourself a favor and find a more friendly and competent bank to do business. read more
