Over the past year, I've gone through a double mastectomy, hysterectomy, and multiple reconstructive surgeries. Throughout that entire journey, the team at Mbodied Strength showed me a level of compassion and flexibility that is incredibly rare. They graciously paused my membership during each surgery and allowed me to return for the short periods in between when I was medically cleared to train. Many gyms with membership contracts wouldn't accommodate that, and it made such a difference during an already difficult time. Every time I returned, Hrishikesh met me exactly where I was. He was incredibly knowledgeable about my restrictions, always providing thoughtful modifications that allowed me to train safely while still challenging me. What I appreciated most was that he never made me feel like I was "less than" because of my limitations. Instead, he helped me focus on what I could do, reminding me of my strength while respecting that recovery is a gradual process. I've always felt comfortable and supported at this studio, and I've always felt safe training with Hrishikesh. His expertise, patience, and encouragement gave me confidence in my body again at a time when it would have been easy to lose it. He always meets me where I am, and encourages me in a way that I always end up doing more than I thought I could. I am stronger and more confident in my abilities as a result. Training with MBodied Strength helped me dream big for my health and fitness. I always wanted to take a martial art, but was always too anxious. However, now I am currently taking Taekwondo classes. After an injury to my foot I thought I'd never be able to run a full 5k, but I'm working towards that goal next year. If you're on the fence at all, just go for it.

Seriously though, I know a few strength coaches in the cross fit arena and while I would stress this isn't a cross fit program, it does incorporate some of it's strategies. But, without the yelling, pulsating neck veins and spittle cross fit is know for. Coach Joey takes his time to get you comfortable with the lifting patterns and techniques required. He uses simple, light and effective methods to help your body learn the motions before having you dead lift the back end of a 1973 VW Squareback. He wants you to be effective in what you do without the fear of hurting yourself. But don't be fooled, he will make your heart pound and your pores open up like a monsoon in the tropics at the end of every session. Joey will motivate you to push your limits in every class in a positive and confidence building manner. Give him your time and effort and he will make you the best physical person you can be.

I've been a member a little over a year. I sort of stumbled upon the place. I had never really…read moreweight lifted before, yet alone with barbells. At first it felt a little intimidating, but pretty soon I was feeling like a bad*ss. In the past, I've tried almost every kind of gym workout class and I usually dread going or I like it a lot at first, but get sick of it. This is the only one I've really stuck with and I think there are a couple of reasons. One is that you have a uniquely tailored program for you. You have a set number of lifts to complete every class, so it gives you a sense of completion. And it's not too hard or too easy - it's just right because it's tailored to you. Two, every 10 weeks or so, we test our strength. In the year that I've been there, I've gone from doing Overhead Presses at 50lbs to hitting 115lbs in my last test. That is real progress that you can see and measure! When I describe doing Olympic weight lifting to some ladies, they think it sounds intense and unapproachable. But Joey is really good at teaching you the lifts and making sure you are doing them properly to avoid injury. The class sizes are always small enough that you get his personal attention. And all the people are very nice and friendly. It's a great diverse group that really represents the community.

The Retrofit class is great - in my case, it was the perfect regimen to build up a baseline of strength after coming out of a fairly sedentary period in my life. Travis, the owner, cultivates an energetic, welcoming, disciplined environment. You'll quickly see that the classes are full of regulars - folks stick with GymSmithy because it's a supportive and effective setting that really feels like a community. I joined with the goal of establishing a physical exercise routine, which I did, but ultimately kept coming because of the profound positive effect the classes and community had on my mental health. This is hands down the best use of my time and money for fitness classes. Each day's workout works the entire body in a balanced way and provides fitness that builds rather than destroys one's body. The exercises are structured so that you can choose your intensity; there is never pressure to do more than you can safely do. I can feel confident that after a Retrofit class I am stronger and less prone to injury in my normal life. There is no body shaming or pressure to look a certain way. The pricing is great, and there's no hidden fees or confusing contracts. No annual fee, processing fee, initiation fees, or equipment fees like big box gyms charge. Here you pay for the class, you take the class. The owner, Travis, gives great personal attention and feedback during classes, and keeps things entertaining so classes are fun instead of a chore. I've only been inside a few boxes (CrossFit aka CF uses the term 'box' for 'gym') and most are…read moreknown for grittiness or clean simplicity. This is a BEAUTIFUL space in West Seattle. The owner, Bethany, used to be an instructor at my current box; and I owe a great deal to her. Because of her knowledge and positive (yet constructive) feedback while I plowed through my first uncoordinated months of CF, I can say that I am fitter than I've been in years. Hell, I'm fitter than I was when I DID think I was fit. First, you should know that I had become a blob before I joined CF. Really. I got winded going up and down stairs and lugged around 50+ more pounds 1 1/2 years ago, so DO NOT WORRY about your fitness level. It's all scalable, and there are beginner classes to get you started if you're new. Boot camp on crack, is how I would describe CrossFit. You do team workouts, individual workouts but in a team environment, you go for personal records (PR's) from anything to running, to weights, to completing a particular workout in x amount of time. I don't think I've done the same exact workout in a year and half yet! Check out LOFT's website for their hours, fees and WODs (Workout of the Day) as I've only been here once. But, it is helpful for you to know that the entrance is in the alley BEHIND the building. (That poor consignment store lady; she was so friendly in directing people back around the building. I must remember to go and check out her store.) LOFT has lots of street parking around, and they have a small lot in the alley. This place has all the CF amenities you would expect, including a pretty high-up rope! Super-secret tip for any CrossFitter: always wear/bring long socks with you, in case of rope climbs and dead-lifts. No rope burns/scraped-up shins, k?) Aaaaand the people here are super-cool; the community, while growing, is small enough that you get to know people from different boxes all the time. It's how we grow the cult... ...Kidding. Despite what you've heard, you only have to sacrifice ONE baby goat to become part of a box. As I've said before, WOD ON!

The staff were also **super responsive during sign-up** and helped me through some unusual payment hiccups without any hassle, which really showed how much they care about their members. I mostly attended the **11:30am classes**, which tend to be a bit smaller--perfect for getting more individual attention. The focus is very much on **technique**, which I really appreciate. Head Coach Tony deserves a special mention. He's **super friendly and approachable**, but don't let that fool you--he'll absolutely push you in training (in the best way possible). You leave every session tired but better, and the support from the whole gym makes it an awesome experience. Inherent in the culture of the sport is mutual respect and sportsmanship, and Muay Thai Iyarin embodies that. Communication with your partner is emphasized, especially for more senior folks being paired with newer folks so that they feel comfortable with the light, play-style sparring used to practice the drills learned in class. Naturally, there is the option for heavier sparring for those in the intermediate and advanced classes--but even then, communication is emphasized...sometimes you've got an injury, sometimes you just don't want to go hard, etc. It's all about talking and getting on the same page. I absolutely love that, because it's so important to the sport, and to life in general! I love Muay Thai, and I really appreciate the culture and community that has formed around this gym. The folks here are great, and they work hard to make it a fun, safe place to learn the art.
