The location is good, inside the medieval walls. We were the only guests, and the pension was very quiet. They have a free parking lot at the end of the street. We had a bathroom in our room, and it was spotlessly clean. The beds were comfortable with soft duvets. Breakfast had a wide variety of foods. The owners are very kind and polite. The reason I do not give it 5 stars is the place is really, really ugly: linoleum floors, dusty cheap floral arrangements, a weird rooster tail wreath, balding boar skins, and deer skulls with broken horns. I wish the owners would have a friend with lovely taste come through, take down all the decor and then only put back up the nicest items. Nothing at all would be better than what is there. Two other items: the breakfast includes no hot dishes, and the bath towels (not matching) are line-dried and rough, not dried in a dryer and soft. If you want a really good deal, stay here, but close your eyes!

We received a room on the top floor , 1 queen and 1 single, plus our own bathroom. It had been awhile since I stayed in a pension and I expected a shared bathroom & shower with other guests. Yes, as the previous reviewer mentioned the towels were mismatched & line dried but I saw this as a bit charming. Somewhat similar to staying in someone's home in Germany. Everything was clean. Our daughter was very happy they had WiFi. The breakfast was amazing. Probably would have spent $20-$25 per person on that alone in a restaurant. Fresh cold cuts, cheese, jam, eggs, fresh fruit, cereal, coffee and even a home made cake. The owner and family were very kind to us, even allowing us to leave our luggage there while we toured the city for a few hours the next morning. It is a 5 minute walk to the town square, famous Christmas store and just around the corner from the beautiful Siebers Tower The cost to stay here was exceptionally reasonable. This was my 4th visit in Rothenburg, 1st time at this pension. I know I will return one day and have every intention of staying here again. Can't wait to come back!

I don't think there are more than a dozen rooms, and there are only three levels with no elevator. Not that any of that is a bad thing, I just want to make sure you know what to expect. You could actually consider the small size of the hotel to be a good thing, since it really helps set the mood for staying in the quaint town of Rothenburg. Walking into our room, it had a level of comfort and antiquity that felt like you were maybe visiting Grandma, instead of staying at the Four Seasons - both will take care of you with much comfort and indulgence, but there's definitely a huge difference between the two. Despite the antique feel of the room, it was very comfortable, and the bathroom struck me as surprisingly modern. The staff was super friendly and helpful, above and beyond in my opinion. It was also quite a good location in the old town of Rothenburg. I also appreciated their free wi-fi access!

My stay came with breakfast, typical European foods, everything was tasty especially the cappuccino! I added parking at 18€ per night, they have a private lot with a gentleman that takes you by golf cart. You can't access your car without this man. Driving into the walled city is quite hectic, people walking everywhere and the roads are narrow so beware. And accessing the front door of the hotel check in is done in the lane.

I had a schnitzel with French fries and sauerkraut, and he had three kinds of sausages with potatoes and sauerkraut. Everything was absolutely delicious, and we were very happy! Our dinner table was served by a Vietnamese staff member. Perhaps it was because I am Asian? I am a Japanese person who resides in the US by the way. At check in, we were assisted by a German woman at the front desk, but the person who guided us to our room in the annex building was also Vietnamese staff member. I wondered if it might have been simply because of the look, and they thought I would feel better to be assisted by someone who is also Asian? Of course, Vietnamese and Japanese are quite different--perhaps as different as Germans and French-- this may have been a well-intentioned assumption based on appearance rather than necessity. That said, I personally had no issue with it and assumed they meant well. However, it would also have been perfectly fine if a German gentleman who was serving the table near us also took care of our table.

As a bit of background, I had been bouncing between hostels for the majority of my trip before I…read morearrived at Hotel Alter Ritter. Seeing that the price was about the same as a shared-room hostel, I was surprised to discover that it really was for a private, hotel room. So while the room was a bit old, and there wasn't any shampoo provided (though I had my own and didn't ask for any at the front desk), I was pleased to find that the water was hot, the room were very clean, and the employees very friendly (proactively giving me directions on a provided map how to easily get to the historic district from the hotel). The only weird thing was the shower, which requires you to sit or crouch to use it hands-free (see the attached picture). Overall though, I liked it so much, that I ended up staying an extra night, rather than head to my next shared-room hostel!
