Repaired My Spider-Cracked Screen for $80 SITREP Tripped, caught myself, but not before letting go of my iPhone 4S that was in my hand, and watching it smash face first onto an uneven cement jag abutted off the sidewalk. THE SETUP I should first note that this wasn't the first time I'd drop my iPhone. Usually the rubberized Jam Case has protected my iPhone 95% of the time when the impact is on a relatively flat hard surface of a floor or sidewalk. And I STILL swear by the Jam Case just to be fair to it's protective quality. But I don't want a hard front cover on my iPhone. Makes the phone's profile too thick in my shirt or pant packets, and I don't like having to fumble things open. I recognize that there are those freak accidents where no amount of planning is going to be able to protect a phone: * Such as when I left my iPhone 2 on top of my car roof - and forgot it was still there when I got in my car after loading the truck, accelerated up the freeway onramp, and when hitting 50 MPH, heard the *rattle, kerthunk, and kerplunk* as the iPhone fell of the roof and I watched it smash into smithereens on the freeway. Luckily, I had an upgrade and got my iPhone 3GS. * And in this case, dropping the phone over such an odd configuration of warped sidewalk (which also caused my tripping) caused the phone to land on a jagged uneven surface such that the glass was the impact point first. APPOINTMENT & REPAIR All I needed to know is that my friend Pon had valued this talented techie independent vendor (NOT part of the Apple or AT&T mafia) for her own repair and so I called Marcel right away, left a voice message, and he texted me back with some suggested times and the specifics of my iPhone and the nature of the needed repair. I got an appointment set up for the very next morning at Insight Coffee Roasters for 9:30am, we met, and Marcel went right to work with a replacement "smart glass screen" (he explained to me in detail how amazing this touch-screen technology is, created & manufactured IN THE GLASS), lots of miniature tools, and a great conversation about both our extensive family histories ranging all over the Mediterranean. Within 30 minutes, he had finished and my iPhone 4s was a good as new. RESPECT Because Marcel's technical work is very discreet and vulnerable to duplication, I am following his request and not posting pictures of the process. Suffice it to say that his work is very efficient, diligent, professional, and you get more than your money's worth, and he saves you the headache - as you would have to endure in the "old days" - of getting, and by "getting" I mean "PAYING", for an entire new phone.
