I sometimes think of her as a surgeon without the surgery -- she has brains in her fingers, knees, elbows, feet, and every other part of her body. She doesn't simply massage sore muscles; she figures out where a problem is coming from and then uses her own body as an incredibly precise therapeutic tool to reach it. During my most recent session, for example, Arraya recognized that I was having issues around my rotator cuff and shoulder. At one point she positioned my armpit over her knee so that she could use her knee underneath the shoulder while simultaneously use both hands above it to stretch, mobilize, and work into areas of tension that I honestly would not have imagined were accessible. The relief was remarkable. That is one of the things that makes her work so extraordinary. She uses leverage, pressure, positioning, stretching, body weight, and different parts of her own body like specialized instruments. There is enormous physical intelligence in what she does. Nothing feels generic; she is constantly responding to what she finds. Thai massage also requires a certain amount of trust because, as the client, you are allowing someone else to move and position your body in ways you could never accomplish yourself. I am continually amazed by how safe I feel in Arraya's hands and by how precisely she seems to understand both what my body needs and how to get there.
