A meat head gym- no doubt! This place is typically not staffed except for when a new member needs to sign up and makes arrangements ahead of time by calling or e-mailing now. You can even get a 1 day pass online and not have to make actual contact nor is it expected probably. For the monthly pass, with no enrollment fees, mind you, you would need to make an appointment the first time around. If you can make it at least 5 times to the gym within the month, then it is worth getting the 24-7 access by the month. Most gyms wanted to charge me an enrollment fee for a partial one month period, and it was just not worth it to do that for me. Most gyms don't have 24-7 access and those that do will tack on this enrollment fee. I was planning to work out manually but then I had thought of this gym and tried asking and glad I did! There are showering facilities which I wouldn't have expected, but it's super nice to know that I don't have to leave sweaty and head straight back home if I don't want to. Definitely a potential incentive to keep working out and makes it feel less like a stressful event. One of the showers doesn't even work currently, but there are two others that do. The toilet paper rolls look worn out and it feels like if they were fixed, some musclehead might accidentally break it again by pulling too hard on it. Another one, during one time I was there, the water was accidentally left on and I turned it off, I could see how one might be in a hurry and not have closed the faucet all the way. You just try to do the right thing with minor things like that. Most clients probably would prefer to drive home and use their own comfortable shower rather than the one provided here. There are also a few bottles of wipes provided, but I was probably the only one who would use them or maybe they would only be used by others if sweat got on the equipment. There's a whole array of apparel from online that can be shipped directly to you and pictures of history and pride of the gym and the owner's past interests and successes. I can't fully appreciate the equipment that is here nor understand how to use much of it. I tried to look what equipment was what and how to use it when I could and sometimes I just did things by looking and feeling them out enough but making sure I could handle the weights and such if things didn't quite go as I expected. The only thing I wish this gym and most gyms could have is an optional local community event to get together and just chit chat once in awhile, maybe like every month or 2 or 3 months. I have run into a few that do this or did this once in a rare occasion to try it out, but it is a way to try to build community so that I'm not just showing up and leaving. Gyms that have classes, as I can't make those regularly, I'm not able to socialize that way. So, the classes have become not a big deal to me. The personal trainers I've tried at other gyms is hit or miss, more miss The trainers I tend to like to work with the least are the ones that have been hired through a mainstream gym because many of these people only want to work with certain clientele and they may do things like not show up to their appointment or put someone else in place when that is not the standard practice at most gyms (and this probably should be the standard practice at most mainstream gyms.) They are trying to go for the "relational" connection building, but most gyms are way too transient for this on both the client and staff sides to be effective. A few reviews have said that one can just ask others for help. While I probably could've, I did feel like as a non-jock, I would be intruding on someone else's workout and if I asked them something, what could I offer them back that they would want? Sometimes, a "thank you" might be enough, but I guess living in this world and how it's changed and socially, not for the better, I feel uncomfortable without more context. Even something as simple as I recognize that brand name on your shirt or something "generic" but thoughtful like that could be enough. I think there are people who are probably really nice, but some that would be super annoyed. You don't always know 100% but you just get that vibe. Even things more in my space and YelpE, and even in things where I definitely level off enough with others, I have not built the tight friendships one might expect. A few people did say "hi" when I was least expecting it, and one person ended up going into the gym even thanking me for "letting him in", but I wasn't actually letting him in and I didn't want to create an unnecessary conflict. I also just wanted to leave the gym at that time too. It was safe to assume he had a valid pass and just wasn't finding his pass or working the system right. I stopped in a couple weeks ago to check out the gym. The owner Steve was such a nice guy. The gym was absolutely spotless and it smelled so clean in there. Tons of equipment for lifting and strength training. He also had some cardio machines in the front. I ended up doing a home gym plan because I didn't want to make the drive but if it was a little closer it would be perfect. yazzzz Steve Pulcinella's gym is by far one of my favorite gyms of all time and I've been to Super Training before (have yet to visit BB). The facility is freaking amazing. Steve really spoils his lifters. You'll never be waiting for a bar that you need, but you'll probably be waiting for a squat rack lol. He has plenty of platforms for weightlifters and even deadlifting. He has bumper plates, eleiko plates, metal plates, etc. There's really so much to choose from at this facility. He also has an array of accessory machines and cardio machines for those who want to be a bunny. The atmosphere is awesome. There's always lifters who encourage each other and his dog who always barks at you haha. Steve sells a bunch of goodies up front like Lenny and Larry's cookies, drinks, etc. He has everything! It is $10 a day I believe, and I totally don't mind paying to come here and there. If you're deciding to visit this gym, I'd say go for it! read more

This gym is LEGIT. If you are actually serious about lifting weights, you need to come here. There are a few treadmills for cardio bullshit, but this gym is about picking up heavy things and putting them back down. They have plenty of power racks, olympic lifting platforms, and tons of free weights to do whatever dumb shit you want to do that isn't a squat. They even have strongman equipment including atlas stones, which is awesome. I lift here anytime I am traveling through the area. I started working out here recently based on comment a user form on weightlifting from reddit dot com. One of the lifters that was being profiled spoke about how much me missed this gym after moving to Texas. I am very glad I did. Even though I have a family membership at the local YMCA, I prefer to drive past two branches of the Y to train here. Friendly to kids above the age of 13. I am making this up, but I have seen quite a bit of high school students in here. They are all serious about working out. If you want to get stronger, this is the place to do it. read more

Probably the best weightlifting gym in the Philadelphia area in terms of equipment. Iron Sport Gym has it all. The facility is clean and roomy. There's plenty of cardio machines, accessory machines, deadlift platforms, squat racks, and benches, which caters to all athletes. When I walked into this gym 4 years ago, I thought I died and had gone to heaven (surprising!) Steve and his mecca were referred to me by my then Olympic Lifting coach Regis Becker. EVERYTHING that Rege has said about Steve-his personality, kindness, willingness to assist, and knowledge to make you as strong AF were true. For starters, THE PLACE IS CLEAN. No empties, no chalk strewn about, no stanky smell. Secondly---and the MOST important---EVERYONE can train here. Eleiko, Texas Bars, EliteFTS are the only acceptable bars. Bars you've never heard of are here---and Steve will tell you how to use them to get stronger. Elite athletes live here. I've been lifting weights since high school and now at 33 I thought it might be a good idea to get some formal training (read: i can't afford to be injured). Steve Pulcinella was recommended to me by a friend of mine who said, "if you want to learn powerlifting, learn it from Steve." So I joined the gym and took 4 private lessons with Steve. I found his rates to be a stellar value, and his depth of knowledge excellent. I also appreciated his relaxed, no screaming approach to lifting. In a nutshell, "Here is what we are gonna do, here's how it's done, now you do it and we'll make your form right." That's what I wanted, and that's what I got. The gym has a cool old-school feel. The place definitely has a rich history. Everything functional, no bs apparatuses. I also have appreciated thus far that everyone I've met there has been down to earth and approachable. So that's my review. If you're looking for a no-nonsense place to accomplish your lifting and physical conditioning goals, I suggest you take a look at Iron Sport Gym. This gym is great. There's plenty of equipment, I rarely have to wait to get on anything, they have two sets of all weights for dumbells. The owner is really cool and they have strongman equipment if you're into that, this is the gym you've dreamed of. Membership rates are competitive and lower than the commercial fitness centers. They have clean shower rooms/bathrooms and plenty of lockers. I've been working out for about 10 years at about 5 different gyms, this one is by far the best. Check out their website. Iron Sport keeps getting better! Over the two years I've been lifting here, they've added additional power racks (now at 4), more platforms (now at 6), and more of that great strength equipment you've come to expect. It really is the best place for serious strength training in the region. Pretty much everyone here is very nice and helpful, and you won't find many other environments with this many dedicated strength athletes. Iron Sport has plenty of Olympic and power barbells as well as a host of specialty bars (buffalo bar, rickshaw bar, cambered bar). There are 4 power racks, a monolift, 3 competition height EFTS benches as well as a fat bench and incline bench. There are also 5 Olympic platforms and plenty of bumper plates to toss around, plus low and high blocks. Plenty of strongman implements are at your disposal and are available for use in the gym and parking lot. Two years ago, I walked into Iron Sport Gym, intimidated. The intimidation was short lived. Yes, this place is filled with very large and very strong tattooed men. They got that large from years and sometimes decades of training. They also happen to be nice guys. There are plenty of women who train there too. And then there's Kaz, the adorable mini bull terrier behind the counter, with his daddy and gym owner, Steve Pulcinella. I started powerlifting, working with Steve. You can't help but like this guy. He is tough but kind, and funny as hell. More importantly, he has walked the walk and has lot of experience to learn from. In two years I have added 70 lbs on my bench, 145 lbs on my deadlift, and 180 lbs on my squat. In addition to powerlifting, I had fun trying out some strongman / strong woman events. They have Atlas stones, yoke, log bars, sleds, farmers walk frame, tires, kegs, all kinds of things. We even hitched a car to a big rope and practiced pulling it across the parking lot. Steve also coaches people to compete in the Highland games, and there are lots of platforms around for Olympic lifting. This place is not for you if you are looking for group cardio classes. I can't say enough about this gym. I'm a beginner powerlifter and came to Steve for coaching. On day one of my training he helped me increase my deadlift by 65lbs!! My bench increased by 35lbs on my first chest day. This guy really knows how to motivate and coach for results. The gym is equipped for any type of strength training, and you don't need to feel embarrassed to ask questions. I'm so happy I found this gym and Steve. A long-overdue review of one of my favorite places. I used to train at a commercial gym where I was the strongest woman in the place, despite actually being pretty weak at the time. It was obvious that most members were only there because they felt obligated to work out, and you could basically smell the apathy in the air. As a result, I didn't feel very motivated to improve. I have been training at Iron Sport for 4 years now, and it has pretty much changed my life. Being around so many strong people is extremely motivating. Coaching from Steve, his wife Jalaine, and many of the other gym members has made me a much better lifter than I ever thought I could be. Even now, when my work schedule means I'm stuck training late at night during the week, there are always a bunch of strong people around to motivate, inspire, and offer training advice. Everyone is super friendly, and it's just a fun place to be. The gym keeps getting better, too, because Steve is always adding new equipment. A few of the recent additions include a belt squat machine, a deadlift platform with band attachments, and some fancy new straps for chains. Cardio equipment is limited, but there are at least 2 of all the "essentials" (treadmills, rowing machines, stationary bikes, ellipticals). Let's be honest, you don't come to this kind of gym to mindlessly hamster away for hours... But the option is there if you really want it. Also awesome: they have a wide variety of membership options. You can pay with cash every month or set your credit card to auto-pay, students can join at a discount, and there is a no-hassle day-pass option (none of this "you have to come in with a member" or "guests can only come 3 times" B.S. that some other gyms have). My only complaint would be that Iron Sport has ruined all other gyms for me. Whenever I have to train at a commercial gym on travel, I just hate it and want to go home. tl;dr this is the best gym ever. read more

I was referred to Iron Sport by a friend about a year ago for lessons. The owner, Stevie P., was well known in the lifting community so I knew I was going in the right direction. The gym is a distance for me, but I willingly drive it about once a week to get in decent training with decent equipment. There are no worries about using chalk or dropping weights while there. If at any time you have any questions, Steve is more than willing to use his vast experience to help you out. The people there are great as well. Very welcoming to new lifters. I've participated in a couple of mock meets there too, which is such a fun time and a great way to get your feet wet if you plan on doing any meets. I don't have enough good things to say about this gym. The hours they are open are really convenient as well. A lot of powerlifting gyms have restricted hours, but not Iron Sport. Give it a shot! I've now been a member for almost three years. As someone who is quite successful in his professional life I wanted to find a gym back in 2012 that fulfilled my personal goals of considerably greater strength, muscles and cardiovascular conditioning but not one of those terrible box gyms with no personality and no real culture. With Iron Sport I found exactly what I was looking for - an amazing facility with some of the strongest guys on the planet. Steve Pulcinella is the owner with a great big heart and even greater knowledge on the subject of strength training. The facility has the best equipment, a supportive culture of serious and committed lifters and I couldn't be happier with my decision. It is now such an integral part of my life that I simply cannot train in any other environment - the members are amazing and I consider many of them my close personal friends. I have actually walked away from lucrative job opportunities because I am simply not willing to sacrifice this aspect of my personal life because it is so integral to my personal well being. What others have been saying about this place is 100% true. I've been searching for a gym that is completely free of the commercial b.s. that seems inescapable in today's fitness industry. If you're looking for the same thing, then search no further, because Iron Sport Gym is the gym for you. This gym is no nonsense, and is clearly filled with the most dedicated and hardworking individuals that I've seen in the fitness world. The gym itself is filled with professional-grade equipment for powerlifters, weightlifters, crossfitters, and strongmen. I have never seen anything like it in my life. Though, you probably want to go somewhere else if you're looking for the typical wall of treadmills that fills most other gyms. Here, you have to actually look for the cardio equipment (which isn't necessarily a bad thing - there are a few treadmills and ellipticals, but they are very much secondary to everything else). Steve, the owner, is kind, approachable, and very helpful. In fact, the reason that I came to the gym in the first place was to get Steve's advice on how to improve my lifts. He completely diagnosed all of the problems in my technique and suggested a plethora of helpful hints to keep improving, all at a very reasonable price for a person of his expertise. If you're frustrated with your lack of progress in the gym, spend the money and get yourself the best coach out there who actually lifts. Better still, if you're local (or even if you're not) get a membership and surround yourself with people who are always improving, and who will probably help you improve too! Iron Sport gym is exactly what the name implies. A gym dedicated to all things heavy, without the trendy, useless flash. One of the last remaining true lifting gyms around. This is not a globo gym. It's not a place to come and tiptoe around shiny glittery machines and flirt and chat and pretend to do work. The people here are serious lifters of all kinds. Strongmen, Powerlifters, Olympic lifters, Hardstyle Kettlebell lifters, former CF'ers and YMCA'ers looking for more specific focus (and affordable cost) etc.. At the same time - everyone is welcoming and helpful. Steve is awesome - an encyclopedia of lifting history - and a man who walks the walk everyday. It's his place and he's pretty much always there - the guy has been around and back again. Powerlifting, Strongman, Highland Games - He's been competing at the highest levels for decades. The gym has everything a weight lifter could possibly need to get in and GET WORK DONE. If you are looking for an affordable, super well-equipped, supportive, no-fuss no-bullshit gym to slang some iron - this is definitely the place. PS: i'm pretty much the smallest dude in the place when i am there. I'm 50 years old, 5'7" and 170 lbs. The atmosphere at I.S. is never intimidating, in fact it's just the opposite. As a preface- I started power lifting about 2 1/2 years ago after many years of martial arts training, football, basketball and still playing in a softball league (if thats a sport lol). I have competed in several meets, and I can say without a doubt power lifters and strength athletes are the most supportive, humble, and down to earth group there is. If your reading about Iron Sport and worried its a power lifting gym and not like the commercial gyms- thats the beauty in it, it certainly is- You will be around the group of folks I just described.Do yourself a favor and stop in...I met Steve as I decided I wanted to get some coaching on my lifts before an upcoming meet.Spoke with him on line, set up a time, And done. that easy...To that morning..First off, Steve has got to be one of the most easy going guys I have met, ESPECIALLY for someone with his credentials (look the man up, I will stop there!). We went over programming, I picked his brain and we got into my lifts to check form. First to squat- 2 slight adjustments Steve noticed right from jump street We made them, and my squat has never felt better. I used to have slight pain in my upper back below my neck after heavy squatting, after working with Steve, no more. We moved on to dead lift and concluded with bench press. I can honestly say these three lifts have NEVER felt this good, nor has my body felt this good after doing my normal training days, which i 100% credit to Steve for fixing my form. Although I live over an hour away, I will be frequenting Iron Sport on the weekends every chance I can. If you are a strength sport competitor, you need to do yourself and your body a favor, and go see Steve so he can look over your form and program. You can read all the online articles you want( by the way, the guys that wrote most of those articles, Steve knows first hand!) but having someone who has lived it, breathed it, and studied strength sports for well over 30 years is the REAL answer to helping you become your best.
