I am extremely disappointed with our recent experience. During my dog's visit, the doctor found a…read morelump, performed testing, and told me I would receive a call with the results by the end of the day Monday. When no one called, I followed up on Tuesday and was assured I would receive a call back by the end of that day. Again, no call. When I called Wednesday morning, I was then told the doctor was actually out of town for several days and that maybe someone would get back to me with the test results. Waiting on test results for a possible health concern is stressful enough without being repeatedly given inaccurate information and having to chase down answers myself. Better communication and follow-through are essential, especially when a pet's health is involved. I'm also frustrated by a previous issue involving a food change recommended by the clinic. After switching foods, both dogs gained 13 pounds despite eating only half of the recommended amount. The doctor then recommended a new food, which was the original food prior to the recommended change that was half the cost, yet the clinic refused to take back the unopened/remaining $150 bag of prescription food. To make matters worse, the bill for this recent visit for two dogs was nearly $2,000. For the cost of care charged, I expected much better communication, service, and customer care. Unfortunately, this experience left me feeling disappointed and undervalued as a longtime client. This is no longer the place retired Dr. Van Zante built.

They accommodated a yearly checkup only 2 days before the appointment and every member of the staff - from the reception area, the tech who swabbed his ear, and the vet who looked at his teeth - my cat was really well taken care of. He is a very anxious boy who is very sweet and it's rare that he lets the guard down easily. Despite him clawing at his ears and being difficult when they were trying to swab they were so gentle and empathetic with him. It made me feel really good to see such kind hearted people working in this facility, and on a Saturday no less. The price was very reasonable at $220- I got shots, an ear swab, medication, and 30 minutes to ask questions with the vet about him as he ages and the different options available for cost savings with their plans. Thank you Mary! He was very happy, didn't even hiss when he got his shots which I was shocked by. I had to leave the room but just as soon as I left they grabbed me to come back. He was a trooper. We initially took her in because she was having some difficulty walking, he attributed it to hip/back issues and prescribed 3 medication to help with pain and inflammation and said if she did not improve to bring her back in 7-10 days, her condition did not improve, we took her back a week later because she was completely lame and vomiting non stop; Dr. Stohs took X-rays and stated he could not see any visible issues with her hips or spine, but continued to insist it was a bulging/slipped disc and prescribed steroid treatment and sent us home with a referral for a physical therapy provider. That night, I decided to google her symptoms and the only diagnosis that matched her symptoms was Lymes disease, so the next morning I requested an appointment and asked if we could have her tested for lyme's disease, at this point Fifi was vomiting non-stop and immobile, so we had to leave FiFi in the car for the exam; she tested positive for ehrlichia, he injected her with an anti-nausea medication and a steroid and told us to wait another 2 hours before beginning ORAL ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT, mind you FIFI had not been able to keep food or water down for nearly 48 hours at this point-- FIFI WAS DEAD WITHIN 36 HOURS!!! This man had the unmitigated gall to call myself and my daughter the day after her death and and then texted me " I don't have any idea why this would happen." If anyone would like to hear the voicemail or read the texts from him, I would be more than happy to share. When calling to inform the clinic of her passing the callusness of the woman on the phone certainly didn't help either. All I can say is don't attribute to malice that which can be explained by incompetence, and so I will not be bringing any other animals here. Will we miss you FiFi, you're death could have been prevented if tot would have received treatment from a doctor who was willing to do their due diligence to care for you.

Her regular vet was booked. So, I looked on Yelp for emergency vet clinics and came across UrgentVet. They don't treat anything life threatening, but for this situation, it was a great option. Their hours according to their website are 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. On holidays from noon to 8 p.m. So, they're good for those emergencies that always seem to happen at or after your regular vet closes. Also on their website you can save your spot, give them an expected time for your arrival. I did that, then took off for Overland Park around 4:30. We got there a little past our ETA (construction and afternoon traffic) but were still checked in and shown a room within five minutes of getting there. Everyone was very nice. I really liked Dr. Vanzandt. He checked Ipo's vitals, her eyes, ears, teeth, lymph nodes in order to get a general idea of her health. Then, instead of going straight to her injured foot, he checked her starting from her neck down. It was a thorough exam done by a doctor unfamiliar with Ipo. The whole appointment took about an hour. By the time we left Ipo was favoring the foot, but was putting weight on it. So, not too serious. We got some anti inflammatory meds and were on our way home. The cost was a lot less than I'd anticipated too. I don't like thinking that we'll need to rush to the vet again, but it's nice to know UrgentVet is an option.

The staff and doc helped us maintain a good quality of life until she passed later in the year. We adopted a young puppy soon after and she came home with parvo.
