I grew up in the northern side of Edison and again, it was an amazing place to call home. Edison, New Jersey is named in honor of Thomas Alva Edison, who made so many of his inventions in the Menlo Park section of Edison. Edison has a light tower to commemorate the site of Thomas Alva Edison's laboratory. It is a building with a giant light bulb at the top of it. I would definitely recommend going to check this out if you are in Edison. It is just off of Route 27. Edison, New Jersey has changed a lot since I grew up there, but it is still a wonderful place. I am so grateful that this was where I grew up and I will always embrace the memories that I created here.

Facing the inlet of Sandy hook this town has almost everything from a good seafood restaurant to an old times hardware store where they still remember your name and what you are working on. The police department has maybe 3-4 officers and one fire truck. I do like visiting here for a number of reasons. Probably the best reason is the views of NYC and the hook. You can look out over the bay and see right into the City or turn your head a see the ocean a mere mile or so away. You can even look out and see Gravelly point where we come to visit this glorious weekend.

This tunnel is a pretty tight drive as you pass through in your vehicle. As I said, this tunnel will stay within your memories as part of South Amboy, New Jersey. I lived in South Amboy, New Jersey and grew up in Central New Jersey, which many claim that central New Jersey does not exist. I disagree. Central New Jersey certainly is a place. It is not the more rural south Jersey nor claim Philadelphia as their city, nor is it directly in the shadow of Manhattan (though here is within the shadow of Staten Island, New York). This "hole-in-the-wall" is part of the landscape of my memories and I am better for having driven through it (definitely a better driver). Again, these little quirks will forever stay within you no matter if your life journey took you far from South Amboy, New Jersey. It is perhaps more poignant will you remember something as seemingly inconsequential as a narrow bridge as a part of a community that you fondly cherish. If you're looking for more fine dining there is a nice seafood place called Frescos up on Ryder's lane. The Milltown diner on main street is a deal and a half when it comes to breakfast and lunch. Try your luck fishing in the pond! It's right in the center of the town by the Hess station. At the corner of one of the towns very few traffic lights. Been fishing there since I was a kid. Caught some big bass and pickerel in there. Even if the fish aren't biting, it's a nice place to grab an ice cream cone from the ice cream depot up the street and relax. Best place on the planet to celebrate the Fourth of July. They start the day with a fishing derby! Always fun fishing on the little mill pond. Catch some largemouth bass and some trout and then it's on to the 5k run! Race with all your buddies all over the town. It's a pretty hilly run, but it's well worth it when you come through the finish line and are met by 100's of cheering spectators. The parade starts normally around 10am and is filled with marching bands, fire trucks, dance teams, and even some rock bands on floats! Next, everyone files down to the towns borough park where there are rides for the kids, live entertainment, lots of vendors, and free hotdogs and soda! The large "MILLTOWN" sign up on the hill just can't be beat. This is a town with pride! At night, there are live bands down at the park and they have a firework display that often puts others to shame. Lookin for an all American small town feel? Take a trip to Milltown.

Like others mentioned, you get in line to buy a ticket for your food item(s), and then you get in another line(s) to pick up the food. Lines were a bit long but fast on Friday evening. We got the: - Greek Loukaniko - grilled sausage with bread - 5 Pack Pork Souvlaki - skewered pork kebabs with bread - Greek fries - fries with salt and oregano - Loukoumades Krispy puffs generously coated with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and sesame seeds The Loukaniko and Pork Souvlaki were both wonderfully seasoned and beautifully charred. It looked like a lot of meat, but the bright lemon flavor shone through making the dishes easy to eat. The Loukaniko had a hint of sweetness and a distinct spice blend that I haven't had outside Greek cuisine. The crisp char on the Souvlaki was the first texture and flavor I noticed. The pieces of pork were juicy and generous. These two flavorful grilled meats were easily my favorite items that we ordered. The bread they came with was soft and nice to have but nothing special. The Fries were reminiscent of cafeteria fries, but these were slightly limp. They had decent flavor and did a good job accompanying the rest of the meal. I wouldn't eat them without other food. The Loukoumades were fried to order. You must eat them hot - eat them while you're walking (with a fork) if you have to! The shatteringly crisp fried dough were warm vessels of honey and cinnamon. The commercial heart of Forest Hills is a mile-long stretch of Austin Street between Yellowstone Boulevard and Ascan Avenue. It's served by the E, ​F, ​M, and ​R trains. The local 75th Avenue stop (with E and ​F trains), was the stop I most used. Mostly in the news until 1978 with Forest Hills Stadium having hosted the U.S. Open (then closed and moved to Flushing Meadows, 3 miles to the north). CLOSE BY -- Manhattan (40 mins by train, longer due to traffic by car); Citi Field in Flushing (where the Mets play; 10 mins by car, 30 mins by train); Jones Beach (35 mins by car). PEOPLE -- Where I lived, a lot of Russians and Jews, but a great mix of all ethnicities...one of the best things about NY. RESTAURANTS -- Most of the better one's are on either Queens Blvd Austin. I fancied Cabana (Cuban), Portofino (Italian), The Family (Italian, closed 2016), Mardi Gras (Cajun, closed 2011), Just Like Mother's (Polish, closed 2014). But there's tons of others worth Yelp mentioning: Forest Hills Station House, Nick's, Bareburger, Deasura, Jack & Nellie's, Memories of Shanghai, Mito Asian Fusion, and Xin Taste Hand Pull Noodle to name a few. MARKETS -- Everyone's talking about Sakura Ya & Cipollina Gourmet, and I'm certain I'd love them too. But, my local place was a Key Food with a great selection of meats, dairy, breads, and jar/can goods. BAGELS -- There's many bagel places, and generally, there all good. But my favorite, a flat bagel from Hot Bialys & Bagels on Queens. Basically, a larger thinner bagel, yes, smushed. That means, better toasted and more schmear.
