I love these little places that create a personality to a community and find themselves forever living within your memories. This tunnel is a pretty tight drive as you pass through in your vehicle. As I said, this tunnel will stay within your memories as part of South Amboy, New Jersey. I lived in South Amboy, New Jersey and grew up in Central New Jersey, which many claim that central New Jersey does not exist. I disagree. Central New Jersey certainly is a place. It is not the more rural south Jersey nor claim Philadelphia as their city, nor is it directly in the shadow of Manhattan (though here is within the shadow of Staten Island, New York). This "hole-in-the-wall" is part of the landscape of my memories and I am better for having driven through it (definitely a better driver). Again, these little quirks will forever stay within you no matter if your life journey took you far from South Amboy, New Jersey. It is perhaps more poignant will you remember something as seemingly inconsequential as a narrow bridge as a part of a community that you fondly cherish. OK, I came here by Googling the expression "hole in the wall", which means, according to Dictionary.com "small, modest, obscure place". Google also had a picture of this place in South Amboy, NJ, which is also a small, modest, obscure place and it brought back a memory. I can't say I've ever hung out here; I didn't even grow up in the state, but my now-wife, who is from Sayreville, NJ, took me there once. I guess she thought it would be funny to take a newbie from Staten Island through this funky looking tunnel at breakneck speed. I was not amused, I nearly shat myself. I don't know how that 2008 Maxima fit through that tiny tunnel, but for like 5-10 seconds I was squirming and screaming in the passenger seat ! She gunned the engine of that white V-6 and I thought we were going to bounce off the walls of this narrow passage which seemed to be out of a different era, another time, another place, like maybe when people used horses to get around, not even a stagecoach, that would be too wide, I think. This hole-in-the-wall must have been created before modern day cars were available, only because the sheer breadth of this thing didn't seem like it would sustain the width of my girl's beautiful, sporty Nissan! Well, I'm happy to say that we made it through and came out safely on the other side, the other side of time, it seemed. My Fruit of the Looms? I'd like to say they fought the good fight, but they were just another casualty in the war against safe driving . As for my girl, I had no choice but to marry her. Nowadays her foot isn't as leaden as it once was and I still drive like grandpa, compared to her, but she's a much safer driver today. The "Hole in the Wall" separates South Amboy from a subsection of itself called Mechanicsville. Back in the day, more than 20 freight trains a day would ride over the 6 sets of trains that are on top of the Hole in the Wall. However, the tracks are rarely used anymore and it has become a hang out for local kids to get themselves with some underage drinking, smoking and such, generally after dark. Recently the city and the county have been working together to clean up the Hole in the Wall removing most of the graffiti and replacing the lights. However, the Hole in the Wall still remains an extremely narrow tunnel with only an inch or two on either side of your car as you drive through. (Just imagine what it was like when it was only one side and both directions of traffic used it circa 1930s-1940s). The trick to it is looking at the marks on the ground, there are treads from years of wear that show you where to line up your tires. But be warned locals judge based on how fast you can get through the Hole in the Wall. read more

I'll never forgot that fateful day when we were still relatively new to the area and looking around for new places that were close to discover. I was driving back towards home when I passed a traffic light and saw something that I hadn't quite seen before. My first reaction was "What the f*** was that?", me and my girl were baffled and intrigued by this hole in the wall weirdness. "What is that?" one of us said, and with that my curiosity level moved into the red...there was no turning back. I went towards it and saw it was a VERY narrow and creepy dark tunnel. As I crept closer to it I saw a car drive out the other side and decided to give it a try myself. I mean...IT'S A FRIGGIN' TUNNEL and I wanted to go through it! So there I was inching closer and closer and just about to drive through when my chick said "Uh...what are we doing? This is kind of scary." I paused, turned to her and said "Is it scary, or sexy? Either way I'm going through this mutha and you're coming with me!" Amy looked at me and said "Okayyyyye" As we made our way though I started having thoughts that perhaps the real other side of this "hole" was going to take us into a vortex or perhaps another universe...would we be in Bizarro world? Kypton? Or worse yet Camden? Nope, it was just a small part of South Amboy named Mechanicsville. This hole in the wall while creepy and having an ominous feel about it really was just nothing more than a narrow old tunnel and I lived to tell this tale. I imagine this was used back in horse and buggy days to get to the old general store, or old man Terwilligers pop stand for some sasperilla for a nickle or that place ole Gertie and Gladys would go to pick up randy sailors or something. I just want to note, this is no eatery...there is no bar or grill, no patrons or hot chicks hanging out. I just typed in South Amboy to see how my old neighborhood is doing. I couldn't believe my favorite "landmark" was listed. Every review of the hole in the wall here is perfectly accurate, some funnier than others. To locals its just a regular old tunnel that you make it through just fine if you gun the hell out of the car and keep your eyes open. Out of towners are always more leery. This made it fun the day my then to be hubbie met my parents. I purposely took him through in his Ford F 350 and giggled at his nervousness. After 15 years he had grown used to it and sometimes enters with a "yeehaa" for good measure. read more

I'm reviewing this simply because it's listed on Yelp. Why is it listed? I really don't know. It's not exactly a "hangout" spot, unless you desire to leave in a body bag...or your idea of hanging out is driving through creepy tunnels. I remember being very young with my mother..we reached the hole in the wall and she exclaimed she did not think the car could fit (she drove a minivan). The fact that she was alarmed then alarmed myself and my younger brother...we thought we would die that day..alas, here I am writing this review. 5 stars for teaching me, as a young child, that death knows no age. read more

Anybody that has grown up in the area knows it is a right of passage to drive thru the hole in the wall. Best way is to just close your eyes and floor it. I remember in the 60s & 70s the Marathon buses going thru, I think the drivers just let go of the wheel because they would bounce off the walls. read more

This little tunnel is scary. Very narrow to say the least and dark! Was forced to drive thru this on my way to a car show. Imagine my surprise when I unknowingly came upon this in my big ass 1978 Lincoln Continental! I bit the bullet and very carefully drove thru, narrowly making it. Won't be going that route ever again. The trick to driving through the 'hole in the wall' is to do it with no hands. Just allow the ancient grooves in the pavement to steer the car. All the better for holding onto your beer. Good Grief-it's still around! I drove thru this tunnel with my 3 little kids on the way to a new dr.'s office back in the early 70's. There were no lights and it was pitch black in there. Scariest ride of our lives. After dr. office visit, we had to navigate back thru. High beams-low beams-no difference. I grew up a block away from the hole in the wall in the 60's and 70's and my personal best was 65 mph. I also remember taking the Marathon bus to Perth Amboy before I could drive. 'Red', the bus driver, would drive the bus through with his elbows while he peeled the wrapper off of a drumstick ice cream cone. That was talent. read more
