What was supposed to be an hour and a half tour of an incredible Biobay was a less than 10min description of the organisms that create the bioluminescence and pointing out a few constellations. We were then told to 'go explore' and be back in 12min. We were on the water for maybe 35-40 minutes total. A very disappointing experience. read more

I've been hearing about the biobay for such a long time before my trip and was really excited to see it. My boyfriend and I wanted to go with a company where you can kayak in the water but by the time we got there, all of the seats were taken. Biobay Tours was the only company with a boat tour that had extra seats left. Since we had driven all the way from San Juan to see the bay, we said why not. Boy, did we get lucky not taking the kayaks. Yes, the kayaks would have been a great bonding activity for my boyfriend and I but knowing how paranoid I get about nature, especially in the dark, I'm really glad we took the Biobay tours. When you're in the kayaks, they don't have a light to show you the way so you can't see the environment you're in and since the kayaks do not go that far out into the bay (for safety purposes), you see the plankton light up less than with Biobay Tours. With Biobay tours, you sit in the boat which was perfect for my boyfriend since he was pretty reluctant about doing the work kayaking (haha). The boat has a light so you could clearly see through the mangrove channel we had to go through before getting to the bay. This was pretty cool because I've never seen trees like them and our tour guides pointed out giant iguanas and termite nests hidden in the trees. Since we were in a motorized boat, we were able to go farther into the bay and the farther into the bay you go, brighter the plankton were. Also, since we were in a motorized boat, we saw the plankton light trail behind us (so pretty). On the boat, they gave us sticks to put in the water to agitate the plankton to see them light up. If you were lucky, you got to hit jellyfish which also lit up because of the plankton! Our head tour guide was Mario who was super informative and really funny. We learned about the science and history of the mangroves and the bay and legends about the reserve. I had a couple of questions about the bay and he was able to answer my questions with no problem. It was also interesting getting to know him and the crew. The price for a tour was $52 per person, only a couple dollars more than the kayaks. They take card so don't worry about carrying a ton of cash with you. Overall, I highly recommend Biobay tours and would consider coming back again. Tips: ** Bring a DSLR camera if you can and if you can trust yourself with it. I was super disappointed that I didn't bring mine with me because phone cameras cannot capture the light of the plankton. I consider myself a pro-phone picture taker but you could BARELY see anything in the dark. ** Do not expect the plankton to be as blue as you see in the pictures. It was easy to get reservations, and our guide Mark was very knowledgable about a lot of different subjects, including astrology and of course, the bioluminescent bays. The bioluminescent bay is not something to be missed if you are going to visit Puerto Rico... but to see them you must plan a night in Vieques because you won't be back until about 8:30pm, and the ferries don't operate at night. I was under the impression that we would be kayaking to the bay, but instead we took a boat, which was fine by me. Be careful because the mosquitoes are everywhere, but you can't wear repellant if you are going to swim in the biobay because it ruins the habitat the organisms live in... Hence, I wore a jacket and capris and covered the rest of my legs with my towel.. The biobay consists of tiny organisms that when you touch, they glow! If you move your body slowly, you see the tiny specks glow around you; if you move faster, you just see a glowing light illuminating from you. What sucks was that this was very hard to get a picture of... the guide said you had to have at least 8 shutter speed to capture it... we had 16 and still couldn't really capture it... so now I have no proof that I was there! We did a Bio bay tour with these folks while visiting Vieques. First, I should mention that seeing bioluminescent plankton in the ocean is not new for me. I saw and swam with them while on a trip in Vietnam. It was a truely magical experience not just because of the glowing water.. but also because the place I did this was a lot more beautiful than Vieques. That said I enjoyed our tour from Island Adventure. Our guide was very knowledgable not just about the bay but also astronomy. These guys are awesome!! Michael was the "main" info tour guide and had a great way of explaining the science behind the little bugs in the water. They accommodated our little group of 3 at the last minute .. Superbowl Sunday created a mysterious cancellation of our previously scheduled tour. I'm actually glad the change happened as I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much kayaking out and back. This is a definite for your bucket list. This is awesome. The "biobay," or bioluminescent bay, is the reason we came to Vieques, and Island Adventures didn't disappoint. First, you have to go on a tour, because most rental companies on the island won't allow you to drive yourself there due to the number of times they've had to dredge cars out of the swampy roads. Also, it's a long, dark and (as I mentioned) swampy road out there, and you'd probably have a hard time finding it anyway. Island Adventures will give you a quick but thorough introduction to what you're about to experience, giving you an idea of what it is that will be lighting up around you (namely millions of bioluminescent single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates). Then they load you on a school bus (literally -- complete with zero legroom) which bounces its way down the puddle-filled path to the biobay. Word to the wise -- if you get motion sickness, this bus trip will make you sick, so take some dramamine beforehand. Once you arrive at the biobay, you get on an electric boat, which is itself a wonder because it is all but silent. It is actually a catamaran with two electric motors. As you whoosh out to the middle of the bay, the pleasant tour guide will point out various constellations with a laser pointer. Finally the boat will come to a stop, and the boat operators will hand out life preservers, and everybody jumps in the cool, salty water. On the night we went, there was a half moon out, so we couldn't see the glow around us. Fortunately, though, since the boat was a catamaran, we were able to swim under the boat between the pontoons. In the darkness there we saw incredible sights. Everything was glowing. My chest hair looked like a glistening diamond necklace. When I pulled my arm out of the water, glowing bits retreated from my hand and back into the water. I could see the glow produced by my legs kicking beneath me. After calling them and giving over the credit card number to hold the slot, I get a text message saying that the credit card machine is broken and we need to pay in cash at the booth when we check-in. We paid and went on the tour. After a great time on the boat and the rest of the vacation we head home. Looking at our credit card statement, Island Adventures charged us for the trip after we paid in cash!!! Israel, an employee of Island Adventures said the office did this to several people and they would refund the money. This was out of this world!! Vieques has one of the very few bioluminescent bays in the entire world, and supposedly the best one. For those of you who don't know what bioluminescence is, it has to do with marine microorganisms that emit a fluorescent-like light when they move. This one bay in Vieques is full of them: if you go swimming there at night, the water lights up as you move. It's hard to describe with words: you really have to see it to believe it. Island Adventures Biobay Tours is one of the couple of companies that take you to the biobay at night (there's another one that organizes kayak tours, but I hear it's not nearly as good). They charge about $40, which may sound like a lot, but believe me you won't regret it. They give a presentation on the biobay and bioluminescence, and take you to the bay by bus at night, where they have a pontoon boat that they take to the middle of the bay. Then you go for a swim, marvel for half an hour, and come back. Seriously: it was amazing. Do I need to say it again? A-ma-zing. To boot, the light pollution on Vieques is minimal, so I got to enjoy one of the best starry skies I'd seen in a long time. Don't miss it! read more

EVER SEE PLANKTON LIGHT UP? Not me. Til that day. Lots of raving about this 'must see' adventure. It does live up to the hype though. Give it 2 hours. I was told this is better than Mosquito Bay. Heck, I got 20 bites WITH deet on. I don't want to know how many I would get there. I digress. You kayak (1 or 2) into a hole in the bay which takes you into a mangrove that leads you to the Bio Bay. Nothing lights up until you get there. Depending on the current, you will row harder one way than another. You want to go on the early one (6:30pm), as the later one (8:30pm) has stronger currents and it's pitch black. Too bad you can't swim in it anymore, but I still saw the green light up from my HADUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKEN through the water. Total came out to $48/pp after everything. Sorry, no pics. So, this is a post that I found from 2012. I will explain why I have copied it here. "2.0 star rating 4/16/2012 We were scheduled to go on the biobay tour Saturday, April 14th. Due to the horrible weather they canceled and promised we would be booked for the 9pm tour the following day. The next day I called multiple times to confirm but no answer. We showed up at 845 pm at the green store with another couple and the van didn't show up until 930pm, only to say the packed all of the canoes away and that they didn't have us listed even though they assured us on Saturday. I did receive a text from Gary today saying, " things happen for a reason ...." I guess they have enough business to just do that to us. Defiantly book with Abe's next time" Essentially the same thing happened to us. We were scheduled to go on Saturday night at 6:30 pm and they cancelled. It was raining and they said you will get wet, we talked and we decided we would go ahead and get wet. They then switched stories and said there was lightening at the bay. At this point it was no longer raining at their offices. We think they lost some business that night and were not going to take just two people out. By the way, I happened to see their reservation book and they had us on the book at both 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm and that was before there ever was an excuse for rain. It appears they never intended to take us out at 6:30 pm and did not care if we had to sit in their offices for two hours. Did they try to get us on another tour, no. Did they try to make us comfortable about waiting for two hours - no. Fortunately we called our hotel and they got us on another tour much earlier in the evening. SAVE YOUR MONEY! $60 per person to get a lecture on protecting the environment? What a joke! We were told they had glass bottom boats; they did not. After taking a very long bumpy ride on some rickety school busses to get to the bay, we boarded the pontoon boat with about 25 other people where we were taken on an hour long ride around the bay, listening to the MOST boring biology lesson. Halfway through the tour they filled 2 5-gallon buckets with water, brought them on board and had 2 people stick their hands in the buckets to witness the bioluminescence. After that, it was back to shore with a lecture on protecting the planet. That was it! We were not the only ones disappointed in their misrepresentation. Many of the other passengers expressed their discontent as well. My advice: If you want to view this phenomenon, watch it on video. read more

My wife, son, and I traveled to San Juan, PC for vacation. We have a 2 yr old son, and I read some reviews online which shows Island Adventures was kid friendly; so we decided to take a ferry, stay in Vieques for one night so we can experience the biobay tour. Going to Vieques was not an easy task, especially with a 2 yr old. Only reason why we wanted to go to Vieques was for the tour. I book this tour about 1 month out. I never received any confirmations via email or phone call about where to go for the meet up point for the tour. Very unorganized. When we got to Vieques, I called to confirm the details of where to me. The guy on the phone had an accent, but I was able to understand him clearly. He knew the hotel we were staying at because that was the info they asked when I confirmed the tour about a month prior. The guy clearly stated that there was another couple that is staying at the same hotel and he can pick us both up for the tour since we are less than 5 mins away from the meet up point. Thought to myself, well, doesn't make sense for me to drive if the guy is offing to pick us up and drop us off for no additional charge. He was supposed to pick us up at 7:15 PM...we waited until 8:00; and no one ever came to pick us up. I then called them the next day and calmly asked what happened and why didn't anyone pick us up? The guy over the phone got really defensive and combative. Didn't really allow me to talk and kept talking over me. He also indicated that they NEVER did hotel pickup since the company opened 7 yrs ago. The reviews on Tripadvisor and others on the internet beg to differ. There are reviews which says they offered pickup at hotels in the past. I asked for a refund, and the guy says he will need to give the message to the owner and he will need to call me back. Two days passed, no return calls. I tried calling again, left a message, and still no return. I'm sure the tour is a nice tour, but the company is not being accountable for what they committed to. There are many other companies on the island of Vieques which does this tour as well. I would HIGHLY recommend going with another company. We called other companies the same night Island Adventures failed to pick us up. Simply amazing. There is no other experience in the world like this....its not that its better than say, standing at the foot of the Grand Canyon or flying over an active volcano, its just completely different. There are certain areas of the world where the water composition is just right enough to allow for this. The Bay in Vieques is inhabited by millions of tiny dinoflagellates that light up as a defense mechanism. When you are riding out to the Bay on the boat you get your first glimpse of them as they swim close to the surface- blue streaks appear to shoot out from the bottom of the boat at various times. When you stomp on the foot of the boat the fish get scared and swim away from the boat creating even more streaks of light. With the Bio Bay company we chose to take a group boat into the Bay and then swim in the water, you can also choose to kayak yourself. On our way out our tour guide did an amazing job of pointing out different constellations, which were more visible than I've ever seen them. Once in the middle of the bay we donned our life jackets and jumped in the water. Every time you move you are covered in tiny flickers of light. You glitter and sparkle and its just about one of the coolest things you'll ever do. You can make snow angels in the water, blow on the water like it was soup, and really do anything you can think of! When you lift an arm out of the water some of the organisms stay attached and flicker for a few extra seconds. Grown adults were turned into squealing children. This particular bay is one of the most concentrated in the world and if you're planning a PR trip you must not miss it! read more

Not much to add here. Its definitely a must-see-before-you-die kind of thing. I went out with Alex, and Ive reccomended him to a few friends since then. Hes chill, funny, and his mom makes the best flan in the world. Oh, actually, the flan part is pretty important. Ask him about it. He will tell you where his mom lives (its near esperanza, right across from tradewinds). You go knock on her door, and she will sell you THE BEST FLAN EVER MADE SRSLY. This is one of the best experiences I have had in my life. It was the bio bay that made it so special as opposed to the tour group, but our guide was great and the overall experience warrants 5 stars. We were a group of three. Myself, my girlfriend, and her daughter who was nine at the time. We decided to go in one kayak on the night run that left our hotel around 10pm. It was a really dark night, which is best, and the moon was a tiny crescent. When we first started out into the ocean in the dark in a little kayak, it was exciting and a little scary. We paddled into a mangrove where the trees hang overhead forming a canopy that completely blocks out the little bit of light that the moon was producing. In here, we traveled for at least 30 minutes, navigating our way through the dark waterway. The only thing you could see where the glow sticks on the fronts and backs of each kayak. Green symbolized the front of the boat and red was the back. That way, you knew if you were heading in the flow of traffic or not. I am color blind, so nobody listened to me. I thought every boat was coming right at us the entire time. Thankfully, we had a level-headed 9-year-old to keep us all in check. As we got closer to the bio bay, you could see the plankton glowing in the water with each stroke of the paddle. It became more and more intense until we finally reached our destination. After a brief orientation, we were allowed to swim in the bay. There are literally millions of plankton in each gallon of water and if agitated, they glow. It is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Swimming under water with your eyes open is surreal. Watching others swim (and even passing fish) was really fun to see from the kayak. If you took a scoop of water and tossed it on your life jacket, the plankton glow like a pulsating glow stick for a few seconds. Supposedly, it is very good for your skin and has healing powers. I have not researched that, but I like the way it sounds. The ride back was also fun with the mangroves. One thing I can tell you for sure is that if you can get along in a 3-person kayak, you are in good company. We got along famously. When we returned to the beach, we turned in our gear and jumped in the van for the short ride back to our resort in Fajardo. We all agreed that we had a wonderful time and will never forget such a special occasion. We all used the expression "once in a lifetime" at some point. Do yourself a favor and make plans to do this regardless of which travel company you use. I wish this was something I could share photos of, but I didn't have a waterproof camera at the time, and I am not sure that I could have effectively captured the event even with it. read more

So I didn't really want to do this. My mother-in-law had made arrangements for our family to do the bio-bay the day after we came in from the bay area. My 4 year old was complaining and crying. The trail was long and dark (and bumpy) in the bus. There really are mosquitos in Mosquito Bay. That said, this was a really awesome experience and I'm really glad we ended up going. The guides are incredibly well-informed and friendly. They went to a lot of trouble to help our little boy have a good time on the ride to the bay. Once on the boat we could see the glowing in our wake almost immediately. When we got to the middle of the bay each of us was strapped into a life preserver belt (except for the little ones who were already in life vests) and invited into the 80 degree water. It made it so you didn't have to focus on swimming and could instead focus on the glow. Swimming in the bay was amazing. Under the quarter moon we could experiment with the glowing effects - aside from watching the glow around you as you swim, you can lift your arms or face from out of the water and watch it the sparkle, you can spit a stream of glowing water, amazing! People started spontaneously singing - it was that kind of an experience. On the trip back the guides gave us a star lecture. Just one more amazing part of an amazing trip. Don't miss it. read more

I wish I had read these reviews before I booked a reservation with this company for the Biobay tour by electric boat. I would have realized that this company does not care about it' s customers in anyway, I will explain. I made a reservation by phone on May 23rd for a May 27th trip. I gave my credit card number to reserve our spot and I was told that I will receive a text with info about when and where. I did not receive that text so I called back, many time they do not answer their phone very often. I left messages and never received a call back. I finally got ahold of someone at 2:30pm on the 27th and I said who I was and that I need the info on time and place and he said that he would send it to me right away. He did and I thought we were all set for our trip, week I was wrong. We were told, by text, to meet at their beachside location across from the el blok sp? hotel/ restaurant starting at 7pm. After finding a parking spot I walked up to the dark kiosk at 7:04pm and no one was around. My daughter and I waited there until 7:50pm when I happen to ask an employee from the Fun Brothers kayak company if I had made a mistake with location with Island Adventures who I was supposed to meet me here at 7pm. He said I was in the right place with a frown on his face, then I ground out why the he said that Island Adventures often does not pick up their customers on time or even at all! He then said that he had room for my party of 5 to go with him on his kayak tour that was leaving very soon. He was so kind in waiting for my party to gather (they had been in the bar across the street to kill time) and to wait for my husband to go to the atm across the street as well. I can't say enough about how kind the Fun Brothers employees were and good guides out on the water as well. I wish I could say that was the end of my story with Island Adventures, I just saw today on my Visa bill that they charged my party of five for the boat tour THEY DID NOT SHOW UP FOR!!! So Visa is now taking up the fight with them to get our $250 back. Please do not consider using this company, yes it looks like sometimes you get lucky and Island Adventures does show up for you and fulfill their end on the contract that you thought you made with them but why take that chance on your vacation. I feel it is important to communicate these problems amongst consumers so that the businesses that mistreat people are not allowed to continue doing it. I was very saddened to here another local to Vieques tell me that this company often treats people unfairly, this is a very close-nit family on this small island with very little crime. What happen to me was a crime since the proprietor thought it fair to charge me for a service that he did not give me, by his own choice. I never thought that they would have the nerve to charge me after abandoning me. This place is giving the island a bad name because my story will not stop here. MAGICAL. I booked with Island Adventures because my husband hates to kayak. It was super easy to book over the phone. We paid when we checked in = credit card swipe...simple and fast. We stayed at Hector's by the Sea so basically just had to walk up our driveway to get to the shop. Watched the informative video and used the bathroom while we waited for the bus - a simple but great start to our night. I was all set to be underwhelmed by the biobay and instead found it to be a magical, amazing experience. This was in part due to the great tour we had with Dan and the crew. First, I wasn't sure what to expect because I hate boats and get easily seasick - well the pontoon and the bay are about as flat and easy as you can get so rest easy there! The only part where I got a little nervous was the practical off roading to get to the dock - I think that was more my nerves than anything though...although seriously, it's an old school bus and a bit of a bumpy dirt road. A minor adventure right there! Someone on my tour quasi-complained about the road, but in my opinion I think it wasn't that bad AND I can see the multiple reasons why you wouldn't want to pave/even the road (e.g. ecological, economical, etc) But back to the tour - we learned so much and had a lot of fun. The bay was brighter and more amazing than I could have imagined. At first when I looked at the waves I thought I was making stuff up in my head, but then they pulled up two buckets for us to play with and WHOA - definitely a real phenomenon! Waving my hand through the bucket and then lifting it up to see my hands sparkle was so cool. I don't know why but I kept thinking of the scene in Fantasia when Mickey is playing wizard. We got to stand on a ladder in the back of the boat and kick our feet in the bay (no swimming to protect the dinoflagellates - I definitely respect the efforts to be eco conscious), there was a bucket challenge (which I took - so fun!), water guns to light up the bay, a very awesome laser pointer and constellation/astronomy lesson, and to top it off restaurant and activities recommendations from a guide on the way back to town! Obviously you're dealing with nature so some days might not be as great as others - being that this was our first biobay experience I have no benchmark to compare it to but I can say it seriously made my vacation! Oh and all the tips to not waste time taking pictures - it's true - don't bother. There's something awesome about a kind of experience you can't tweet, FB, instagram, but have to just experience and then try to describe to others. Please note: newspapers have noted that due to unknown causes, the biobay is hardly glowing in the past several weeks. While this is not Island Adventures' fault, my reservation was canceled just 4 days before the trip, though newspapers have reported bioblackouts since April. I've yet to fully resolve the issue, but be warned that any excursion from any company to the biobay will either not happen, or be far less glowing than you expect. read more

We ended up on a tour with Island Adventures after our other tour provider left us standing in the rain for 15 minutes and never showed up to pick us up. Island Adventures was really nice about it and we were very glad they had room. The guides were knowledgable and fun, and clearly had an established program while remaining authentic. Unfortunately we got DRENCHED on this tour, completely unexpectedly. It had been a sunny day and the weather reports we looked at had no warning. We had to keep our cameras and valuables in a waterproof box on the boat, and got no pictures as a result. Everyone was soaked to the bone and freezing, even those who had rain gear and umbrellas were soaked through. The most prepared person had a waterproof camera... Nothing else was effective in dealing with this amount of rain, which came in horizontally, cold, and hard. Despite the rain and cold, it was amazing to see the bio luminescence light up as the torrents of rain pounded the water. We also got to put our feet in the water and play with buckets of glowing water. The boat's wake would light up, and you could see lots of glowing fish. At the end of it, the guide helped us find a ride home. We were worried no taxi would want to take people as wet as us. I can't say enough about the people at Island Adventures, and in fairness there was nothing more they could have done about the rain. I would do this tour again, even in the rain. I would probably bring some very large garbage bags with me to use as ponchos. Also, don't believe any tours that offer swimming in the bio bay - it is actually illegal. The Department of Natural Resources recently closed the bays to swimming, but some tours are still advertising swimming and/or breaking the law. read more

What an amazing experience!! Rafael was as inspiring as the glowing bay. His passion for the earth and education was inspiring. The ride there is slightly bumpy,but so worth the trip. Rafael was very knowledgeable and taught us not only about the Bay, but about the stars, nature, global warming, and even pirates. They must really hate the bio bay! Amazing that PR government actually lets them destroy the bay the way they do. These guys use gas generators on their boats to charge batteries. So they basically are spewing exhaust and Ugh NOISE all over the bay. Forget about peacefully enjoying the amazing bay. Choose someone else. There are many reputable companies that respect the bay you can choose from. read more

We showed up for our tour at 7:15pm. If not for a local taxi driver being in the area that had previously given us a ride, we would still be waiting. He knew an employee and called them. That guy told him that the your was cancelled for the evening. No phone calls, emails, or anything else from island adventure informing us we had our tour cancelled. The tour was already paid for so who knows if we'll get our money back or not. Do Jak Water Sports instead. Awesome guides and they were flexible enough to let is squeeze in on their tour last minute. read more

We were scheduled to go on the biobay tour Saturday, April 14th. Due to the horrible weather they canceled and promised we would be booked for the 9pm tour the following day. The next day I called multiple times to confirm but no answer. We showed up at 845 pm at the green store with another couple and the van didn't show up until 930pm, only to say the packed all of the canoes away and that they didn't have us listed even though they assured us on Saturday. I did receive a text from Gary today saying, " things happen for a reason ...." I guess they have enough business to just do that to us. Defiantly book with Abe's next time. read more

One of the most amazing things in this world. I can't even describe how fun it is to swim in the bio (bioluminescence) bay, I believe it is the strongest concentration in the world (I could be wrong). Don't forget to go on the new moon. Beware of jellyfish if you choose to get out and swim. They don't warn you at all about it, but they came prepared with vinegar so they knew there was the possibilty of getting stung. We were swimming around in the glowing water and both my father-in-law and I got stung. My whole leg hurt like crazy and went numb, so swim at your own risk. Also, they pack tons of people (20 on our trip, at least!) into their kayak trips to the point that it's annoying to have that many people on an "intimate" trip such as this. You have to wait your turn and wait for slower kayaks to catch up, so if u are looking for a more private trip, don't go with this group. read more

THE WORST PLACE EVER! I literally called them 10 times for 3 days! The call either didn't go through or the rude employer will pick up and ALWAYS says: Call back in 5 mins! Then hangs up on you! For me, this is a good example of a good thing being sold properly. The bioluminescence phenomena itself is super interesting, but add to that the rawness of Mosquito Bay, the knowledge and enthusiasm of the tour guides, and Israel's (the owner) passion for Vieques and his business and you get one of the best experiences you will ever have. The facilities and vehicles (both bus and boat) are very basic but still comfortable, the tour price is reasonable, and you will see the sky full of stars like you probably have not seen in a long, long time. I would recommend wearing long sleeves as it can get a bit breeze in the bay (I was there in late November). I would also add that these people love their island and its nature and they really appreciate every effort the public makes for preserving it, so please skip the insect repellent. read more

Me and my husband had the worst experience with these guys. Firstly we tried calling them from San Juan three days prior to visiting Vieques. No one ever picked the phone. Finally we landed in Vieques and tried calling from our hotel W. We were going to stay only for one night so it was important that we went the same day we visited. No one again picks up. The hotel concierge tried their best to contact them and again no response. Thing is I have spine condition and kayaking was not an option for me. Hence island adventures were the only company who conducted ferry tours for groups. On being told by the hotel that we should just directly go to the company and ask if they could take us, we agreed to do that and landed at their office. Upon reaching, the man incharge just blunty said -"no place"! We said we were leaving next day and it would be great if he could accommodate. He said if someone cancels he will see. When we asked why they don't pick calls. He said they were booked since A week. But how would we know. Leave a recorded message atleast. We spent so Much just to see the bio bay. Anyway. Point was that the gentleman was so rude to us. We waited till his last customer showed up to see if someone cancels. Btw waiting is a task as you will be attacked by 600 million mosquitoes in the process. Finally he didn't even bother to come and tell us that he couldn't accommodate us. When we went and asked, he didn't even look at us and acted as if we were non existent. So much for waiting 2 hours in an unknown island where locals are the only help you can have. Finally he and his customers rode of and he asked us to leave rudely as he was closing his cafe. So we had the most hostile behavior and experience. All we needed was a good behavior. Anyway alls well that ends well. The cab we called had a local girl who helped us see biobay even though we were prepared to go back to hotel. She insisted someone ride us in kayak while we sat behind and do nothing. We saw the bio bay all alone at 12 midnight. The best experience ever. And good people do exist. Fraud,liar,un-reliable,irresponsible -- Beware, please do not give your credit card details upfront to this guy. He will take your money. Very nice people recommended me Island Adventure for bio-bay tour in Vieques. We were in Vieques for 2 nights and specially for biobay tour. So, I planned ahead of time and called Island Adventure before one week to reserve our spot on tour. He didn't give reservation on our desired day saying that tour is fully booked on that day. I was impressed that Island Adventure seems very popular and his tours are booked. So, I made reservation for 2nd day. He asked for credit card details for reservation. I said I will pay on tour day before beginning tour. So, he said I can't book your spot on tour without credit card information. So, I gave credit card details and he sent message on my phone that reservation is confirmed. Now, I was ready for my Vieques trip but I found that rain is in forecast for both days so we were worried we may have to miss bio-bay tour. On day when we reached Vieques, weather was nice and there was no rain forecast for evening. But, rain was in forecast for 2nd day(tour day). So, right away I went to Island Adventure to see if he can accomodate us on tour. But, they were closed. I went again after couple of hours and they were close again. So, I asked neighbouring bussiness about Island Adventure and so they said, generally if Island Adventure have no tour booking then they remain close. Originally, I wanted booking on this day but he lied to me that his tour is booked so he can't accomodate us. Meantime, I was trying to call him and text him to find out whether he will have tour next day or not. But, I did't get any response from him. Then, I texted him to cancel my reservation. No response again. Then, on same day we did bio-bay tour with other tour company. On 2nd day(rainy day), I thought let me go to Island Adventure to cancel my reservation personally. Again his business was closed. I tried to call, text him. But, no response. Our vacation was over and then after one week I saw charge of $160 on credit card statement from Island Adventure for service that I cancelled and I didn't took. Since then, I am trying to reach him via call and text, but he is not responding me. He took my $160 for nothing. read more

They cancelled on us hours before the tour, claiming it was too windy. It was not windy that night. There was a gentle breeze on the bay. I know this because I was able to book a spot that night with another company. It's a wonder I was even able to reserve a spot with Island Adventures in the first place. I called them more than 20 times. Each time it went to voicemail. They did not respond to email. Finally, after countless fruitless attempts, they actually answered the phone. Their unresponsiveness should have been enough of a red flag to avoid them. My whole trip to Puerto Rico was scheduled around this tour. Don't waste your time with these incompetents. read more

Just got back from the boat tour. The tour was amazing! We arrived early so we had to wait around a couple of minutes but that gave us a chance to use the restrooms which were very clean and nice. The person behind the counter greeted us nicely and informed us the tour takes 2 hours and there are no restrooms out there. The bus soon arrived and it was a bumpy but fun ride there. We joked around with the driver and he played music for us. It was a short drive to the bay, but we had fun. Our tour guide Robert is the Bill Nye of Vieques PR! He didn't skip a beat when it came to tell us everything you could ever want to know about the bay. From the plankton that cause it to glow, to the history of mosquito bay, to the ecosystem living in the mangrove and all the beautiful constellations in the sky. We got to see the water glow and he brought up a bucket of water for us to put our hands in. Heads up, he can't let you swim in the water BUT if you aren't wearing chemicals like bug repellent, you can put your feet in the water and splash it to make it glow. It is honestly the best tour I've ever been on! Robert is not only knowledgeable, he also makes the tour extremely interesting and fun! I highly recommend this company for anyone who wants to enjoy the bay and learn as much as possible. It's very romantic but please, leave your babies at home. It's a night time boat ride. Not safe for babies or infants and other can't enjoy the peace and quit of the bay. Not to mention the ride is extremely bumpy. read more

This was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. It was a little scary to be driven in a big van in the pitch dark to an unknown location by the water. But then you get in the canoe and put on a life jacket and with every stroke of your paddle you see the water beneath you light up. Staff was friendly and informative and the experience is truly beyond words. Anyone that goes to Vieques simply must take part in this amazing adventure. read more
