I stopped by Island Escape Grill this weekend for lunch. They are only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, so make sure to check the hours before you go. I was in the mood for some jerk chicken, so that's what I ordered along with some cabbage, rice and beans, and some fry bread. The service was fast and I ate my food there. They have a few tables available. The jerk chicken had great flavor. I do wish the portion size was a bit bigger, one thigh, so next time I will request extra meat. The fry bread was tasty and the cabbage hit the spot. The meal was $15. I will definitely be back to try some other menu items. Solid spot.

I ordered oxtails and whole fish for take out and my heart absolutely SANG when I opened these boxes. I knew they'd be large servings coz they were HEAVY, but I didn't expect such generous portions of MEAT. They looked so good and tasted even better. I order oxtails every chance I get and theirs is one of the best I've had, not just in Pinellas but anywhere in Florida. The whole fish was still nice and crispy even if it's been doused with sauce. Even the fried dumplings were so good and tasty! It's a small place with a few tables but the guy at the counter and the lady chef were all fun and nice!

Overall the food was okay, I would have preferred some more spice in my curry or some pepper sauce on the side. But overall it had some flavor. The chicken was tender and fell off the bone. They do not serve everything on the menu every day so I recommend calling ahead or checking the daily menu online. I believe there are some updated photos of the menu on the yelp page. It's a small hole in the wall restaurant. There is one table in the restaurant so I would plan on picking up your food to take home. All of the food is pre made and served from a chafing dish. So it is still very hot. Service was pretty typical of a Jamaican restaurant. Straight forward and to the point. Not a lot of fluff in the conversation. I got my food quickly and was on my way. This is a cash only establishment and there is no ATM on site so come prepared.

This ended up being such a great place and experience that we came back a second time on the weekend - and they were still able to seat our group of 8 pretty quickly despite being very busy. Amazing. The stone crab was allegedly delicious and was ordered a second time on our return. The first night I had the island rice bowl with jerk chicken. It was lovely and I ate every last bite. The rice itself was a bit bland but the flavors around it were great and mixed in with it to make a yummy combo. Any time I'm outside of Wisconsin I try to order an Old Fashioned, but this was definitely not their skillset. It came out tasting like watered down bourbon in an orange slice and a red cherry. So the next time I looked to something else. There were no great looking drinks with brown liquor, so I tried the sangria happy hour (literally a 24/7 happy hour). It was better than most sangrias I've ordered in restaurants so I was content with my choice. Multiple people in our group ended up with the jerk chicken, and they raved about it. A lot of our meals over the week were compared to Rumba's jerk chicken. We got some kind of chicken nachos as an appetizer, and oh my was it heavenly. I'm not a nachos person, but these were to die for. And the chicken on them was scrumptious. My second trip I wasn't starving, so I got the Southern Street Corn Caesar - cuz how amazing does that sound?? Well, it was basically just a Caesar salad (don't get me wrong, it was a good Caesar salad) with a few pieces of corn in it. It was indeed blistered and lovely, but it made absolutely zero impact on the salad. I expected it to be kind of the star of the dish given the name. Oh well. I added blackened shrimp to my Caesar. A great salad regardless, clean plate club once again. I thought this place was great. A casual atmosphere but still a nice setting with good food and super friendly staff. Our first night, Owen was our server and he was an absolute gem. Our second time I am pretty sure we had Tiffany, and she was also a delight. Definitely the best two servers we had anywhere during our stay in Florida. Thank you!

I got the fried platter - it was a sad plate of food that was previously frozen. They were out of grouper so I got the mahi mahi and it was a bad decision. It tasted like an overcooked chicken breast. I told the waitress that it was very gross and she asked if i wanted something else. I said no. check came out and i was charged full priced for the frozen plate of garbage. even the "scallops" came from a frozen bag of fish. unreal. this place used to be so good with actual fresh fish.

When I asked about their gluten-free precautions, our server reassured me that the chefs take it very seriously and are very careful when preparing gluten-free meals. We ordered the shrimp ceviche and seared ahi tuna for appetizers, and both were delicious! For our meals, I had Doc's paella, my daughter had the mahi-mahi with jasmine rice and vegetables, my son had the panko shrimp with fries, and my husband had the macadamia nut-crusted grouper with vegetables and rice. Everything came out fairly quickly and tasted good. Everyone in our party liked their food except my daughter she said her fish had zero seasoning or flavor, the service was great, and I really appreciated the care they took with gluten-free precautions.
