I've been going to Habana Cafe since it opened way back in the day. It's always been really solid in my opinion! Last time I went in I got the drunken shrimp and a cup of black bean soup, which were both very flavorful and tasty. I loved both dishes and the Cuban bread to dip was an amazing touch. Avoid the coffee at Havana Cafe unless you enjoy paying premium prices for something barely drinkable. This morning, we were served what can only be described as tepid, stale, weak coffee--at a staggering $15 for two cups. It wasn't just disappointing; it was borderline offensive to call it Cuban coffee. True Cuban coffee is bold, rich, dark, and unmistakably strong. What we received was the opposite: a pale gray liquid with a suspicious, artificial flavor, as if something had been added to mask its age or poor quality. Temperature? Lukewarm. Strength? Nearly nonexistent. Authenticity? Zero. If you're expecting a proper Cuban coffee experience, this is not the place. It misses the mark on every level. For anyone in Gulfport who actually wants real Cuban coffee, go to Pipos in St Pete; it's worth the drive. Their coffee is exactly what it should be--strong, flavorful, and authentic. No comparison. Havana Cafe should either fix their coffee immediately or stop advertising it as Cuban. As it stands, it's overpriced and deeply disappointing. read more

The food and ambiance at the Habana cafe was pretty darn good and welcoming. The scenery and its decorations really helped make it feel like an authentic Cuban spot in Gulfport. The music upon entry was Latin classic and exactly what you'd want a spot like this. My friend and I split the Pork Sandwich which is usually my choice and he got the Palomilla Steak. Both were flavorful with the buttered Cuban bread and served with a side of green mojo sauce that was great for both sandwiches. We asked for some extra on the side and that helped make the sandwiches taste a little less dry. You gotta love mojo to come to a Cuban restaurant! The service was alright and the waitress was nice but we found ourselves asking for silverware, condiments, & the check a few times. Drove past this place for 4 yrs. FINALLY my Gf talked me into going for dinner. BOOM. On my top 10 list for all of St. Pete area.

We stopped in on a whim in New Year's Eve. We shared 2 combos (lechon asada, camerones barrachos, pescado, and shrimp piccata). Both came with red beans, white rice, maduros, and pressed Cuban bread. The staff seemed friendly and we were seated quickly, with our order taken, and drinks and food delivered in a timely manner. The food was hot and fresh, but not what I'd consider traditional Latin by any stretch of the imagination. It wasn't crazy busy, but we only saw our server 4 times which included getting our food and clearing our plates. It felt like we were a bit forgotten in the upstairs loft. So, while we try to support small business, this is one we may not return to anytime soon. read more

First and last try. This is a restaurant that is fortunate to not have any legit Cuban food competition in the neighborhood. As the only one in the area they have successfully managed to fake it and get away with it. Place was busy, but not with Latins. Note all entrees are served with white rice, black beans, fried sweet plantains, and Cuban bread. The good is the lechón asado priced at $23, was good. The white rice is okay too. The sweet plantains were perfect. The Cuban bread was barely warmed up, and not flattened. Rushed to serve versus carefully preparing it was a concern. The black beans are edible but the taste is off. I couldn't place what ingredient they added to it, but the taste was distorted from legit flavorful Cuban black beans. My husband ordered the Bistec de Palomilla, Skirt Steak. It is served with chopped raw onions and a side of heavily oil based attempt of mojo. The quality of the steak was a huge disappointment for it was tough, burnt edges and was not properly marinated for it was tasteless. Unfortunately, we were not able to eat the steak. We ended up sharing my lechón dish. We ordered a half carafe of red Sangria and were surprised to find strawberries and blueberries in it. Not customary the fresh fruits used in a sangria. The inside of the restaurant consisted of a wall of bench tables, and several smaller tables in the center, plus upstairs loft seating, and a couple of outdoor tables too. I have been here many times and never disappointed. I always get the camarones ajillo which is shrimp dunked in butter, white wine and other deliciousness. My daughter got the Cuban which is a good portion size and one of the best Cubans I have eaten. My husband got the filete de pescado a la pirrilla which never disappoints. If the main entree is not good enough, they include their delicious black beans, white rice and plantains. This occasion was extra special because it was my husband's birthday, so they included a flan with a candle and sang happy birthday. If you want to feel like you are in Cuba or at least on vacation, check out this place. The staff is always friendly; the food is delicious, and the sangria is a must have. People who come here have never been to an authentic latin restaurant because if they had they wouldn't settle for this. This place should not be called cuban! Food had no taste and very slim. The cuban sandwich was bread on bread on the ends, nothing of what you would expect of a cuban sandwich. I got the steak sandwich which was also disappointing, the meat and bread were dry and barely had some onions on it. The grilled fished had hair on it. Ambience also not inviting. Some colleagues and I were in the area for lunch and Havana. Cafe seem like the perfect place to go. We were seated right away at lunch hour, which was super nice and it wasn't that crowded for a Thursday afternoon. Our server came out right away and took our drink water. It didn't take us long to decide that we all wanted to try the lunch special. All four of us had Cuban sandwiches and all four of us were super satisfied with us selection. Two people selected the rice and beans which they liked, I selected the plantains which I loved, and somebody had a side salad. Took forever ( you would think they had picadillo already made, you don't make picadillo to order) She brings it in Togo, a cup of picadillo for 12$!!!! I was just so upset at this point... I felt rushed out, no "do you want some coffee " or "try our desserts" or would you like another 8$ glass of sangria that came in the smallest glass possible , maybe 3 ounces of sangria after the ice ... . Nothing , had to literally flag her down the entire time for anything ... or catch her as she walked by me... We were in Florida for dog related activities and took a day to tour around and see the sights. We had been looking at properties in Gulfport and our friend suggested we try Habana Cafe for lunch. We enjoyed the lunch and ambience of the restaurant. The parking lot has very limited spaces so plan accordingly. We had a spot because someone was leaving. Not sure what is available for street parking, but didn't see much of that available. We were seated immediately in a combo booth and two chairs arrangement by the window on the main floor. It was busy, but not jam packed. Our server was friendly, had good food suggestions, and was attentive. We all tried the half Cuban sandwich and two of us had the black bean and rice soup and one had it with a salad. On our visit, we all would have been better to have the salad. Well to start off, I was extremely excited about going there. It was a spur of the moment thing where we passed it and actually turned around and went there. The place looks great. When we got there, 3 tables outside had been waited on and inside there were 2 tables that had been waited on already. We were waited on by a tall very slim girl. Everything seemed okay when we ordered a half Cuban sandwich and black bean soup and half a pork sandwich and black beans and rice, a Coors Edge and a glass of Pinot Grigio. We received everything in a very reasonable amount of time. Apparently there was a reason for that. I had half a ham and cheese sandwich with no extra pickles and my husband also received a half ham and cheese sandwich. Apparently pigs were on strike, no pork to be found anywhere, and oh wait never saw the waitress after the food was dropped off. We ate because we were starving. Now comes trying to pay the bill. We stacked our plates as an indication and took our card out of the wallet and set it on our table. My husband walked outside and then I watched as our waitress rang up to go order bills. She didn't take the orders, just rang the bills up. It does seem like they do a rousing to go business. At one point I raised my arm up with my card in my hand which is exceptionally tacky. 15 minutes later with my head in my hands she strolls over. She was not the only waitress. There was someone behind the counter taking the order, a short girl with glasses that spent 15 minutes cleaning the table next to us and then she wandered around and never spoke to a customer. There was a blond that had ink on her arms that we never spoke to but she seemed to be inside and outside talking to people and taking care of them. I then politely say, just as an FYI he didn't get a pork sandwich and the girl immediately looks at his plate and I said he was hungry so he ate it. Her response was oh I'm sorry I didn't pay attention to the order. She then said I'll remove it. I said thank you very much. I get my bill in short order and ask her about the cost of $35.22 and her response was oh, I took $2 off since that is the difference between the sandwiches. She then walked off. Straight up I didn't give a tip, and I always give a tip,but she didn't seem to care. And to make it even worse I get home and really look at the bill (she didn't give me an itemized receipt) and she actually added $1.19. I really wanted to like Habana Café, especially after hearing it's "the place to go" for Cuban sandwiches, unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. The exterior is cute and charming, but the interior feels kitschy in a way that doesn't work. Worse, the floors were filthy, which set a bad tone for the meal. I visited specifically for a Cuban sandwich and was shocked to find the meat was cold, pre-packaged deli slices. The sandwich was pressed, but the cheese and meat in the middle were still ice cold--completely inedible. It was 2021, I chalked it up to maybe Covid times? HOWEVER....I decided to give it another try a couple of years later, hoping for a better experience, but again, the Cuban sandwich was terrible. A proper Cuban sandwich should have pulled pork, and while some places use sliced, the fake pre-packaged meat combo and fake sliced cheese here is just not it. The cheese was melted the 2nd time but still icky. They serve cheap cheap icky bottom of the barrel wine out of the jug and some mediocre Cali wine. The only redeeming aspect is they do serve Pepsi. But that's not enough for me to give them a 3rd try. There are far better options in the area for authentic Cuban sandwiches, and I'd suggest giving this spot a pass and checking out one of those instead. read more

Let me preface this by saying I'm of Cuban descent and recently moved to the area from south Florida ... excited to see a Cuban restaurant in the area so we stop in for lunch. Aside from eating, we were looking for fresh mariquitas to take my mother-in-law in the panhandle. Since we hadn't seen it on their online menu, I ask the waitress (in Spanish) if they have mariquitas ... she stares at me ... turns out Jennifer doesn't speak Spanish nor does the restaurant make plantain chips... *record scratch* I'm taken aback but decide to give it a shot anyway. I ordered the half Cuban sandwich with fried plantains and my husband had the half pork sandwich with black beans and rice. Surprisingly, both had great taste, plantains seemed to be freshly fried and the pork was nicely seasoned. Although Jennifer didn't speak Spanish, she was very sweet, attentive and went out of her way to try to get us the mariquitas we were looking for (she came out with bags of Chifles mariquitas, which the kitchen uses ... not what we were looking for but they get points for at least using Chifles brand). Desserts were ok. On the Cuban side, they had flan and cheese flan (which I had - it was very yummy). The other desserts (carrot cake, chocolate cake and a peanut butter and chocolate dessert, which my husband loved) aren't Cuban. Seems although the restaurant owners are Cuban, none of the cooks are. I was a bit disappointed that their menu didn't include the variety I'm used to back in SoFla but we enjoyed what we ordered. I was also surprised that a loaf of Cuban bread goes for $9 - really really steep - that better be some dang good bread for n that price. Overall, are they what I expected from an authentic Cuban restaurant? Not entirely. I'm used to a loud busy eatery with certain staples. Would we return? Sure, we'd like to sample other dishes. Mediocre and disappointing. This was my second visit and while I thought the food wasn't particularly authentic, it was inexpensive and decent overall the first time around (drunken shrimp were good, not great, and the spanish salad was meh but edible). Tonight, I was hungry and getting gas nearby so I called in for a pickup order. I figured a cuban sandwich and medium spanish salad would be a safe bet, because how can you screw up a cuban sandwich?! Food was ready in about 10 minutes, so that was a plus. There were two big issues for me: 1- My cuban sandwich was incredibly sad with two measly slices of ham and 1/3 slice of pork on each half (see picture). I understand now, after calling, that their pork is sliced (not pulled as in traditional cubans- although pulled pork can be added). Nonetheless, there was barely any meat. 2- COVID- None of the staff were wearing masks. When I asked why, I was informed that the governor lifted all requirements on restaurants and bars today, meaning masks were no longer required. I looked online and confirmed that this was in fact, true! That being said, while this establishment is not legally obligated to require masks, I, personally, think that, at this juncture, restaurants should still require masks for the safety of their patrons and staff. I mean, who does it hurt?! This business has every right to require masks, or not, just as I have the right to decide which businesses I support. read more

The food here is reasonably priced and the portion we received was so big that we brought leftovers home. My husband and I both had the breaded steak and it was delicious. Our server, Tanya, was so nice even though she was extremely busy. We had been planning to come to this place for such a long time. I'm glad we did. Stopped in here while in the area for a quick lunch. I had never been to this location and it looked like a good place to try. When I first walked in the decor made me excited. It is a really cute place and super colorful. Our server came right over and introduced herself and got our drink order. After viewing the menu I knew exactly what I wanted: the palomilla steak sandwich! This was a staple growing up in the Washington heights part of New York. As a side I got the tostones. Everything was really good. If I happen to be in the area I would definitely stop in again for that sandwich. I am very, very sad to be writing this review. I had high hopes for my first dining experience here. I've had their Cuban coffee and some of their slow-roasted pork at the St Pete Saturday Market, the place is really cute - AND I love that they are involved in community events like Dining Out For Life. My challenge has always been that driving past the parking situation is often a mess. So, this week I saw empty spots and stopped in for lunch. I'm a Cuban food junky and have had some of the best in Tampa, Miami, the Keys, and Havana... and this was a letdown. I was seated right away and they had a decent number of servers on for a relatively busy lunch. My server greeted me, brought water and took my order right away. I ordered the Papas Rellenas ($8.95) for an appetizer, the Habana Combo of soup, and a sandwich ($7.95) and a Cafe Con Leche (2.95). The Papas Rellenas, unfortunately, came out at the same time as everything else. They were brown and crunchy on the outside, but they looked like they were falling apart and the breading was falling off; the potato mixture seemed very wet. One of the balls was filled with pulled pork and the other with picadillo and both lacked flavor - but their homemade habanero sauce helped. For the Habana Combo, I chose the Black Bean Soup and the Cuban Sandwich (1/2) - both were tasty and well made. My only complaint is the sliced pork lunchmeat used on the sandwich with a $2.00 charge for the good stuff. JUST USE THE GOOD STUFF! And the Cafe Con Leche was odd - the coffee was good and strong, it was lightly sweet and creamy, and was smoking hot with the milk stuck to the edges of the mug almost like it had been microwaved. Overall it was just OK, there are much better places to get any of the three items. The last thing that makes me crazy is inconsistency. The website listed on Yelp goes nowhere, their menu listing on their Google listing and on Zomato all list different pricing which were less than the menu price in the restaurant. For this month's #FridayNightFoodie we decided to try out a place we spotted while exploring our new neighborhood in Gulfport, Habana Cafe. This place is about a mile from our house, which is exciting because I haven't lived that close to a boba fide Cuban restaurant since I lived in North Miami! I should preface this review by saying that because I'm part Cuban and I spent a lot of time in my younger years in South Florida, dining in Cuban restaurants in Hialeah and Little Havana that I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to Cuban food. I look for authenticity of seasonings and flavor and value when I try a new place, because as anyone down south will tell you, you're just as likely to get a fantastic palomilla steak, picadillo, or ropa vieja in a casual restaurant with a walk up street corner counter as you are in a fancy place with prices three times higher. Habana Cafe didn't disappoint in either sense. We made a reservation, as was recommended, but when we got there we were seated right away at a table on the first floor and things weren't too busy. Our server was terrific - she was friendly, had spot on reservations, and was very attentive. Things you have to try: 1) Sangria. We went with the red, which had great flavor and you could tell was not made with a mix. 2) Drunken Shrimp. On the menu they tell you to dip your bread in the white wine, olive oil, garlic, onions, and mojo sauce - HEED THEIR ADVICE - it's to die for. 3) Grilled chicken smothered in white dill sauce. This was an evening special, it's a specialty of the house, and it was incredible! I liked my Lechón Asado - was tender, well seasoned, and exactly what I expected it to be, but the chicken dish won the night for its uniqueness. Oh, and if you have room left over, order the cheesecake flan - rich, topped with lots of caramel sauce and garnished with strawberries and whipped cream, it's a delight. And here's the best part: we got all that for under $80. Flavor. Authenticity. Value. Habana Cafe in Gulfport has it all when it comes to home style Cuban food. We got there as soon as doors opened and we're the first ones in the establishment. Suddenly , there is a rush of people coming in to eat as well and they are getting their food before us. We waited 45-50 minutes for our food , mind you it was just 2 sandwiches and an appetizer that we ordered. There is nothing Cuban about this place !!! They clearly bought this business from someone else and just perpetrate. We ordered café con leche which is in the menu and they brought out regular coffee that tasted like crap. On top of the long wait , the food also sucked and I saw them place my sandwich in the microwave because it got cold causing the bread to get soggy. The steak had no flavor and the they didn't even put butter inside of the bread they bring out before your order. They just put butter on the outside of the bread on both sides and press it. How do you not have the decency to cut the bread in half and spread butter before pressing it ?? If you don't like authentic Cuban food and prefer a watered down fake version of it , then this is the best place to come to. If you are Cuban , Latino or anyone that loves real Cuban food , run far away from this pace because you will feel insulted. The waitress who claimed to be brand new tried to get cute and insisted for me not to tip since the food took long and said "don't do it Meng" in a Scarface (Tony Montana) accent. These people are lowkey racist and don't try to hide it by not serving people of color in a timely manner and then using a Scarface accent since I'm Latino and was irate. The food is normally excellent, BUT for the last 3 visits they do not have all entrees, particularly their Blue Cheese specialty dishes. OK, once in a while understandable, but 3 times in a row???
