DO NOT STAY HERE, bugs, dirt, mold, not clean at all. We stayed here for one night, walking in the room there was a BUG CRAWLING on the wall. The floor was sticky and moist, the air was extremely humid. We then checked the beds due to the dirtiness of the hotel, we found MOLD, the mattress was very dirty. The floors were also dirty and there were random cords on the floor. When we went to heat up our food the microwave was not clean and had spot all on it from who knows what. If you book this hotel make sure you show up before 6pm or they will give your room away and still charge the card on file. We tried to check in at 10:30pm for a reservation that I had made a month and a half prior, but I was told that my reservation had been cancelled. They would not tell me why it was cancelled. They then put me at their sister property but had to change rooms each night and charged me a second time saying that the first charge was made by the travel agency I booked through. I called the travel agency and was advised it was the hotel that charged me and they have been avoiding the travel agencies calls. Right now I'm having to dispute the charge through my credit card because of these greedy people. The not only gave away my room but double charged me. My husband and I checked in on Friday July 18th with our grandson. We arrived at around 6:30 pm. We had issues from the moment we tried to get into our room. The key card didn't work. We called the office and they said we needed to go back down and have the key cards reprogrammed. My husband went down, came back, it still didn't work. We called again and were told that the lock probably needed a new battery. We had planned on resting from our 3 hour drive and then getting in the pool. We didn't end up making it to the pool until after 8pm because we had to wait for them to come change the battery. Tested the card, it worked. Coming back from the pool, we're stuck outside our room at 10 o'clock at night because the key card again doesn't work. We called the office AGAIN and they say they will have to replace the whole lock. We were up until just after 12:30 am with our room door open and the maintenance guy trying to get the lock replaced. This morning, Saturday as we're leaving to go to the beach, my husband closes the door and the door handle comes off the door in his hand. He sticks it back on and we called AGAIN. We're told they will send someone to fix it. I called in the evening to check the status and I'm told they fixed the handle but the card is still not 100% working. They tell me once we get back from the beach, stop by the office for new key cards and so the maintenance man can meet us and show us " the trick" to getting into our room. Apparently they lock they replaced it with wasn't new. It was just another lock. (That still didn't work) I know things happen sometimes and we try to give grace but this was too much and seriously unacceptable. I asked if we could have late check out of noon at least for our unending inconveniences, they offered to let us have till 2. That doesn't really help us once we're ready to go home. My husband asked about a possible partial refund and was told they would refund us if we left. That was per the manager. This experience has been extremely disappointing. They management here didn't show a bit of empathy for the unsatisfactory service we've received. I will say that the woman at the office was apologetic. That's not enough for us to be back. If you're planning on coming here in the next few weeks, don't let them give you room 209,there are also little black bugs in the room. read more

After almost 30 years in the military, traveling all over the world, today I had the worst hotel checkin experience of my life at this establishment, The Island Hotel Port Aransas. The biggest problem here is that not a single person at this establishment takes ownership for problems. First, their official website says checkin is at the traditional 3pm. Checkin is actually not until 4pm which the manager or owner tries to highlight when I point out that I couldn't checkin for almost 5 hours. Problem #1, this establishment needs to correct their official website. Second, I arrive at 5:40pm and I am not allowed to checkin. According to the front desk two cleaners did not show up to work. The front desk says "It's not my fault", as if the hotel staff is not part of the establishment. She suggests I go wait at a bar. She takes my name & number and says she will call as soon as my room is ready. Spoiler: she never calls. Because of this I am not able to use the pool before sunset. Problem #2, this establishment needs to hire reliable staff (e.g., cleaners that will show up to work and a front desk that will pass down information to incoming staff or hotel guests). Third, I arrive a second time at 7:41PM. I see guests checked in leaving with hotel keys. I asked the front desk why was I not called. The front desk says she did not know she was supposed to that it's not her fault. I look around the desk and I see the note indicating to call me. She sees that I see it and she says, "I know, I just saw it now." No room is available despite the fact that I paid a month in advance and other guests that arrived after me were permitted to check in. The new front desk was panicking, unable to help guests and lashing out. The front desk calls the hotel owner or manager who was also unprofessional. The owner or manager did not take accountability, tried to redirect to a 3pm vs 4pm checkin, threatened to cancel the paid reservation, etc., etc. She asked what do I want? I want to check in! Problem #3, the owner or manager herself is the problem, she makes excuses for the lousy staff and does not take ownership for the company they represent. The new front desk staff needs more training or should be fired as she cannot professionally interact with customers. (The job is not that high pressure.) Fourth, after 20 minutes I am finally checked in and given hotel keys. The hotel keys do not work! I cannot get into the room. Staff from a different hotel was called in and came and gave me a key fob with instructions not lose it as it is there last one. Their machine to program hotel keys did not work and they were trying to fix. Problem #4, this establishment needs new key card hardware or software (if it was not user error). The hotel room was nice, clean, spacious, with a cold A/C. There was a little musty or moldy smell...may be. The checkin experience was so bad that it doesn't change the rating. read more

I found Island Hotel Port Aransas to be a decent stay when we were in the area. Price was a bit under $60 per night for a double queen bed room. Cheap enough for a tourist area. Access is super easy since it's on the main highway through town. Room was acoustically insulated well enough that traffic noise was never an issue. Room was acceptably clean & comfortable to me. But my criteria for lodging is pretty simple: a place to sleep & clean up before heading out on touristy adventure. Complimentary breakfast had usual sorts of options: coffee & tea, pastries to include bagels, hot & cold cereal, fruits & yogurt, waffle batter to make if you like, etc. Breakfast room decor was light, bright, and cheery. Desk staff was always friendly, smiling, and outgoing. Downsides were: 1. The shower/bath tub did not have traction strips, so caution was called for to avoid slipping & falling while showering. 2. Vent fan in bathroom did not work. Flipping the switch on-off was an exercise in placebo gratification for the gullible. 3. Overhead light in our room did not work for the five days we were there. Other lights (bedside lamps & vanity alcove light) did work. Supposedly maintenance was changing all the bulbs in the building to high efficiency bulbs. But they obviously didn't get to our room while we were there and we lived without that light. Nonetheless, I'd gladly utilize the Island Hotel as my Port Aransas home base if and when I visit the area again. read more

This place is to be avoided ~ the owners /management could not accommodate a reservation I made on Hotels.com for a ground floor unit for traveling with my handicapped dog. The hotel was pretty much empty and the room they offered was upstairs, dark and smelled like mold. In fact the lobby even had a weird mold smell. (Could be the reason for the mentally off woman at the front desk ~ mold is toxic). When I said I had to cancel because I couldn't stay upstairs with my handicapped dog, she gave me the run around and said I had to go through Expedia (who I did not book with). Argued back and forth with me about it, and insisted she was charging me for a night there anyway. Ridiculous. AVOID this place ~ these people are jerks! read more

BED BUGS! I booked 4 nights at this hotel, we left after 2 nights because of the cleanliness and safety. I was understanding that they were very busy for spring break and since our kids were not with us the first night, I figured it would be fine until the next day. We asked for the room to be cleaned, it was not by the time we got back in the next night with our kids. I kept shoes on them if they were walking about the room because they floors were disgusting. The next morning we ask again for the room to be cleaned, citing the dirty floors, dead bugs on the walls, food spills. We got back at 5 pm and no one had been in the room. I go to the front desk again, it was the same woman we had talked to. She said housekeeping had left, we could switch to another room. We go to that room to find a broken door. Go back to front desk again and she tells us to come back for the manager at 6pm, and that she would explain the whole situation to her and she would "make it right". We come back at 620, the manager lets us know someone is doing a quick turnover on the room and apparently has not idea about anything else. We explain again how filthy the rooms were and she phoned the person cleaning the room. She said to give them 15 minutes. The cleaner had glided a swiffer over some parts of the floor but all of the hair and stains were still there. We asked to be move to a clean room. I started checking the room over and found bed bugs in the corners of the fitted sheets. I was finally done and we let them know we would be leaving. The manager, Samantha reassured me that we would be getting a complete refund after contacting the booking company. She said she would approve it immediately. I finally got a reply today that they got ahold of her and she denied the refund , citing their No refund policy. DO NOT STAY HERE read more

You get what you pay for. Staff was friendly. It's not a motel6. Ice machine broke and it looks like its been that way a while. Morning breakfast was extremely too simple and way too limited. Microwave in room doesn't work. Keycard on door doesn't work, but they actually gave us a key. It was as clean as anywhere on the island. It was useable but disappointing too. Room 226, advertised as a queen economy for $230 a night when I booked (see attached ad for economy queen), had a makeshift full sized bed and really the bare essentials. The lady at the desk had the gall to tell me hotel queen beds were smaller than regular queen beds. The sheets, while clean, were stained. The pillows were god awful uncomfortable. The bed could literally be moved around the room and the headboard wasn't attached and fell. The shower curtain was stained. The only light that worked was in the bathroom. The TV didn't work. None of the outlets in the "bed area" worked. The only outlet that worked was in the "kitchenette" area which had a fridge and microwave plugged into it so I had to unplug one of those to be able to plug my phone charger in. There was an alarm clock but again, you would have had to unplug the fridge or microwave to be able to use it. The shower was fine. The AC worked great. Otherwise, it should be a crime to charge that much for a room like that. I'll never stay here again. read more

Totally bizarre nightmare of a hotel to ever have had the misfortune of booking. We walked into our room, pulled the sheets back on the beds and found a gummy to the touch, smelly, mystery stained fitted sheets and mattress covers, mold on every possible surface, unclean bathroom with moldy door that wouldn't shut and disgusting refrigerator. I had booked a suite at the hotel for my Birthday. I was extremely disappointed. The suite was not what I expected. The suite was dirty, the refrigerator was beat up, the stove vents were dusty and caked in grease, the bathroom door was falling off the frame, the paint was peeling off the wall in the bathroom, the sofa has stains/dirty, and the sheets on the bed had stains. Overall nice place. But had to do 3 stars so far and probably wont be back. My husband said he tried calling the front office for the TV remote and they told him "things go missing sometimes". I went to the entrance a few times and rang the bell and waited. No sign of anyone and no sign of return. I called and eventually a gentleman picked up obviously not caring to talk to me. All of this btw just for a simple remote for the TV. He told me they dont have anymore remotes. (You can get this at typically any major store heb, walmart) Then told me I can flip the channels manually on the TV which I couldnt. Part of why we paid $300 for just one night I believe a simple thing as a remote for the TV wouldn't be an issue. I hope when I talk to them later I'll be reimbursed somewhat. read more

Mold was found on our curtains which is a huge problem. My husband and I both have breathing issues as it is. Our room is insanely small for 2 people. I'd understand giving this size room to a single person but this is just too tiny for 2 people!!!!! One side of the bed you can barely even fit to walk on! The restroom cabinets weren't even finished. The bed frame sticks out and you can hit your leg on it. Not to mention the rod to the curtains broke as soon as I touched it. This room seriously looks and feels as if they threw it together over night!!!!! We usually never have issues with this place. I would leave this hotel no stars if I could. before I continue the hotel itself was ok. good location etc. a bit pricey for what it is.. but overall not bad. now the issues: pool closed at 930pm on a SATURDAY when they said its supposed to close at midnight.. didn't give us any heads up or nothing... not a huge deal but that was one of the minor issue. So we booked three rooms and paid for them all in advance.. when we got there the gentleman up front stated that he only had two for us(even though we had already paid for 3) he told us to give him a bit and he would have a third available.. we waited about an hour. come to find out they charged my sister for that 3rd room(well 4th now technically, since we had already reserved and paid for 3) right then and there. I decided to wait for the charges to actually post hoping one of those $200 charges would get refunded - it didn't. so we called and called and spoke to a "mgr" only to have her tell us she wasn't the mgr after all and that the actual mgr was "running errands", we were told she would call us back before end of day - no call. call back the next day and the mgr "is out running errands" yet again. "ok please have her call us back" we replied - nothing. next day we call again(SEVERAL times) - no answer and no option to leave a voicemail. same result throughout the week. so here I am now 12 days later having to try to get my money back from my credit card company because this hotel/staff was extremely unprofessional and unhelpful. read more

We normally stay at a different hotel when we go to the coast but they never booked us! I hopped on Priceline real quick to find something for the same dates and I was in luck to find them available! It turns out the other hotel we normally stay at is their sister hotel! The rooms were perfect for what we needed and the price was great for the summer! What was even cooler was the unexpected concert at the pool on our last day there! Our kids swam for 5 hours only getting out to eat! It was nice to have the live music while they played! My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights on an impromptu birthday celebration about 2 weeks ago and we loved it! The hotel is basic but cozy, definitely a no frills hotel. We brought our puppy with us and the staff was accommodating. Usually we need to stay in a first floor (which I hate) of a pet friendly hotel but in this one, I believe all floors were pet friendly because we stayed on the second floor. The beds and bathroom were spotless, no dog smell or dog hair to be seen from any previous guests. The flatscreen tv had a good amount of channels but the "clean" remote wasn't exactly clean. I wiped that down lol. We only got the breakfast once and it wasn't the greatest but it wasn't the worst either. The waffles are in the shape of Texas and that was pretty cute. The location of the hotel is NOT walking distance to the beach as some reviews have said but honestly the drive to the beach is literally under 5 minutes. So awesome! The only reason I'm knocking a star off is because of the dirty remote and also the walls were thinner than expected- we could hear the snoring of our neighbor. All in all, you can't beat the price and the location. We will most likely stay here again. read more

We decided to take a last-minute trip to Port Aransas and wanted to try somewhere new. Island Hotel was rated the #2 hotels in Port Aransas and was ONLY $59 per night. They were pet friendly, free continental breakfast, close to town/beach, etc. What could possibly be wrong with this place?? Firstly, the place is directly off of 361. A short 1-mile drive to town and to the beach. Not too bad, not close enough to the beach where you could walk (you could walk, if you wanted to, not my cup of tea though). But close enough to everything, especially for the price. Driving up, the hotel has gorgeous trees, well lit, colorful, etc.. We checked in to the hotel, the lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful. We had two dogs with us and they gave us a "Beware of Dogs" sign and two dog treats which was very nice. We got the keys for our room and was so impressed. It was extremely clean, FREEZING cold, and well decorated. The beds were comfortable, the sheets were clean and you got several pillows which was awesome. Breakfast was great and was held from 7-10AM. Lots of options from cereal, muffins, waffles, etc. There was a small game room with a billiards and a ping-pong table. Pool was nice and was well taken care of. There was people working constantly around the hotel, cleaning up trash, cleaning out the pool, etc etc. Now the downsides: We stayed here on a Wednesday and Thursday night in September, needless to say we thought that it would be dead there. Surprisingly, it was PACKED and that meant the pool was always busy at night. The time for the pool is 8AM-Midnight. If you sleep on the side of the hotel with the pool (like we did) expect a lot of noise. Just because their closing time for the pool is midnight, my opinion is way too late. We had several cockroaches. The place was extremely clean, but we had about 5-6 cockroaches in our room, which was gross. I know you get them everywhere - but it grossed me out how many you got. Lastly, the people upstairs were so loud and they had dogs. You could hear EVERYTHING that went on upstairs. All of the floors are thin wood so you hear every little tap tap tap. Overall, this place rocked and I definitely would recommend. Awesome! read more

Took the actual roach down to the front desk who did not even apologize! She wasn't even shocked. I actually started this review back in September 2016 but never finished. We loved this hotel because it was kid friendly, clean, great breakfast, great staff, clean pool, and close enough to the beach. We ended up here because our neighbors told us they were going to Port A and invited us along. We hadn't been to the beach with kids and didn't know the area very well but went anyway. Upon arrival the staff was very nice. Their lounge was clean and kept up. The room we had was perfect for us and our kids. The kitchen was clean and had everything we needed. The pool was clean and we even barbecued. The one grocery store in Port A wasn't too far away and had everything you could possibly think of. The hotel even had washers and dryers! We used those too! So overall a pretty great trip. We planned on going back soon and we are this week with two other families. This just may be a tradition twice a year - at least! read more

I understand the hurricane setbacks that all businesses have had to deal with, but this was not acceptable. They did a great job remodeling the lobby and everyone was very nice so I hate that I have to give this place a one star. The room we stayed in was the efficiency room because the whole island pretty much had no vacancy! This efficiency room also was apparently the handicapped room. Not only was the room dirty but this room is not acceptable as a HC option, no 5' turning radius, not enough clearance at door swings and the shower would be difficult to get into if you were wheel chair bound. Thank goodness we are not HC bc if you are it is VERY difficult to move around this room, it is super super small. The hotel is older but it is nice. The front check in staff are always so nice and friendly. This was my second stay. Room was clean. Beds are good for sleeping. The a/c worked very well. Our towels were clean. The hotel room smelled clean. The breakfast has waffles and cereal and a few other things. Small breakfast but very much appreciated. It is non smoking but people sit right outside their room and smoke. My neighbor smoked and every time I went in or out of my room the smell hurt my lungs. I asked the front staff about it and they said the smokers were regulars and didn't really want to upset them. That's why I deducted one star. I'm a regular too but I guess not regular enough. read more

Motel has nice rooms, but unfortunately little things have added up until I am looking forward to leaving. Staff is friendly and nice. In fact, I was upgraded for free! Unfortunately, the heater and the phone didn't work in the room I was assigned. I was given another room, but that heater didn't work either! Third time was the charm, and I finally got a room with a functioning heater. The inexpensive price also invites unwanted neighbors in the motel. There are loud, constantly-cursing frat boys that blast music in their cars. There are also plenty of parents yelling at their children, and with the paper-thin walls, I know everything from the dog's name to every reason their mom is mad. Surprisingly, pets being allowed here is the least of my concern; the dogs are generally quieter. Now I say "inexpensive," but for $80-$100 a night, I would expect a bit of better behavior, especially since I've stayed in the French Quarter in New Orleans for $100 a night and had less noise. Beyond that, this particular room has a questionably stained shower curtain and microwave. And it comes with unwanted visitors. I have had four run-ins with small roaches. One I flushed down the sink, but the other run-ins with the roach may be the same roach because it is wily and keeps escaping. I'm at the beach with a door that opens to the outside, but still, bugs are unwelcome roommates. It doesn't help that I can clearly see light around the shut edges of the door, meaning it's not properly sealed. Also, the sidewalk outside my door is terribly uneven where the cement sank strangely, so I have tripped numerous times. I'm just lucky that I haven't face-planted... yet. The free breakfast is fine, but the only hot item available is waffles (though the Texas waffle iron is pretty rad). Other hot items would be appreciated. The free WiFi is some of the fastest I have ever had in a hotel. TV channels are good too. Kudos on those. Overall, if you're used to slumming it, this motel isn't bad. Staff is courteous and friendly and do help with problems. The rooms look new and clean for the most part with a few exceptions. Maybe I'm overly critical or my multiple minor issues have just taken a toll on my appreciation for the good things this motel does offer. read more

Staff has been super friendly and accommodating. The hotel is super clean. Breakfast doesnt have protein but for a meal that is only a short walk from our room, it's nice. No breed restrictions! I had a good experience here, wouldn't say great but it was fine for a 2 night stay in Port A. I made my reservation on Kayak.com for $80/night, which was not bad at all. Decently priced, and raving reviews. I did not pay for a pet fee (did not see the option on there) so I was surprised when I got there that it was $30/pet. I have 2 small dogs that are very well-behaved and weigh 30 lbs combined. They were nice to only charge me for 1 pet, but note to self: I'd like to find hotels with no pet fees since I like to travel with my dogs...Not sure that is even possible anymore? The pictures look better online but the room was still clean and cute. The location of the hotel is excellent: down the street is the beach and restaurants...you do not need to go far nor sit in traffic. They have a cute little pool that is heated I thought (it was not at night) and next to it is a little laundry room that takes quarters ($1.25 per machine) and management will give you soap (they ran out, was a little annoyed by that considering all my clothes were in the machine already) Noise: not so peaceful. Neighbors were banging around. And even worse: a bunch of construction guys shared 2 rooms next door and partied outside all night and when they woke at 5am they blared the TV and talked loudly. Note to management: please check for occupancy limits and address noise complaints. Continental breakfast in the AM, from 7-10. That was nice. Breads, cereals, etc and a super cute waffle machine that makes waffles in the shape of Texas :) Kim at the front desk is nice and helpful. Open 24 hours! read more

Very clean, friendly and accepts dogs for a reasonable fee ($20). True, it's not as well-equipped in the kitchen as some places... but we had a full kitchen and all the basics... and a coffeemaker. The bed was comfortable, and everything was clean. The laminate flooring is cheap, but still so much better than nasty carpet. Would have been nice to have a coffee table in front of the sofa. Would have been nicer to have flat-screen TV's. A few issues: We were upstairs in the front building, and you do hear highway noise. Not a problem as it gets later, but be warned. The room had a jetted tub. Jets looked not too spiffy, so we bought a bottle of bleach and ran it through them, just to be on the safe side. Loved: Pinball machine in lobby. Happy to see the ping-pong table. Wish: They had a hot tub. They do have a heated pool Nice: Continental breakfast, along with make-your-own waffles. Very nice service from the staff. We reserved two connected rooms and were pleased with this hotel. It was clean and the all-you-can eat breakfast was FREE so for a family, it's great. It was a basic hotel though so don't expect something like the nearby resorts. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. The beach was two blocks away and the hotel was close to restaurants and near town. Our only complaint was a noisy neighbor upstairs who let their toddler stomp around constantly, even until 11pm one night, not the hotel's fault but even talking to the staff didn't help. The front desk ladies were very kind and actually upgraded us to a room with a kitchen.. The room still had a smell of Harvey and walls are thin so you hear everything going on outside, upstairs and next door.. Definitely stay there again but will bring a fan and air freshener.. read more

Thank you Island Hotel. I had such a difficult day, extremely high tide followed by incredibly high winds and flying sand at my campsite, and what I wanted most in the world was a clean comfortable place to sleep and shower and recover. The staff was friendly and compassionate, the room was exactly what I needed. I love tile floors in a hotel room, it feels so much cleaner than carpet. There were lots of pillows and lots of towels, a fridge and microwave (I think some of their rooms have kitchenettes too) and a little coffee maker. The decor was perfectly beachy. Breakfast was basic fare, the highlight for me being the Texas shaped waffles. Damn straight the waffles should be shaped like Texas. As a New Yorker I felt strange sense of envy. I wished there was a restaurant that delivered to the hotel other than pizza, sometimes you just don't wanna go anywhere. If you're the type that likes to stay in, hit the supermarket or take out ahead of time. It was midweek in the off season, so I think I got lucky with the price ($59 before tax). The room was odor free, tidy, plenty of towels and pillows, ac was super cold, "appeared" clean from a quick glance. After a second take, we noticed little details that could have been fixed if housekeeping had taken time to properly clean the room. Management was very friendly and courteous. We stayed here for 5 nights, Sunday night through Friday morning, and I was VERY pleased. The prices were quite reasonable for the area, 139.99 a night for a double queen room in June. I didn't bother to take pictures of the room because it looked EXACTLY like the pictures online. Unless our room was the model for their ads I think you can count on getting what you see. Room was sparkling clean, towels were fluffy, beds were comfy, and the pillows were an even mix of fluffy and firm. Such a great little touch! Coin operated laundry is available on site, front desk offers complimentary detergent. I did run the beach towels and swimwear through the washer and dryer one evening, and I want to warn you that the laundry room is STIFLING. Sooooo hot, humid, you will not want to wait in there with your clothes. (It took mine a little over 20 minutes to wash , so if you want to leave and come back that's your time slot) I'm not sure the dryer was working properly, but I was so ready to be done with this project I just took them back to the room and hung them up. We didn't use the pool during our stay, did all our swimming in the ocean, but it looked popular and clean. Breakfast is mainly bread based, muffins, pastries, toast, bagels, english muffins, cereal, and those Texas shaped waffles. It's easy, clean, and free, so what's not to like? read more

I have seen some negative reviews regarding cleanliness, however the room we had was awesome. We stayed in July 2021 for a week and had a 2 bedroom right above the office with a full sized kitchen and giant garden tub. We were able to take our huge lab as well. There was plenty of space for all of us (me & 6 kids) and the room was clean, modern furniture, and nice decor. The kiddos loved their breakfast and although we usually drive to North Padre shore, the hotel is very close to beach access. We would walk to dog our there in the evenings. Very nice, we will definitely be back. read more
