Do not waste your time here. Healthcare is not their main priority, loyalty is?? I made an appointment August 2025 to have my teeth worked on, could not even get seen for a filling until Feb 2026, I thought she was joking. I waited and waited for cancellations or earlier appointments, but the pain was unbearable and I had to see a go to the other side of the island to see a different dentist to work on my tooth. Unfortunately, my dentist had a stroke and was unable to practice any longer. When I came back to this dentist August 2026, they made me an appointment, then 2 days later the office supervisor Rochelle called me back and told me that they would be cancelling my appointment, not according to my insurance PPO (because you can switch to any dentist in network at anytime according to HMSA) but because I went to a different dentist and that is against their "office policy," to go and see another dentist when you cant get seen sooner. She hung up on me initially and told me that I should go to another denstist I am more comfortable with, not sure what that means considering I would not be calling to get an appointment if I was uncomfortable. Terrible customer service. I wouldnt want to come back at any point in time and Hilo is a small community ill make sure all my family and friends are aware of this awful experience. My current dentist had a stroke recently and can do longer work on patients and because I went to them for availabilty purposes I can no longer be seen at Island Ohana Dental according to the office manager. Normally, when I go to have my teeth cleaned, my pressure is elevated. Cleanings are every 6 mos. but not @ Ohana Dental. Jen is gentle but efficient. Dr. G is terrific! Remember: make appt asap! read more

Condescending, rude staff, that are not upfront regarding new patience. They won't give you a long enough appointment to get a cleaning after initial X-rays and check up. Maybe they make more money off people that way. They will not work with your insurance. They will give some off the wall, clinical answer that is meant to be an explanation. Go to someone else is my advice, and what I did. I called offices that had appointments available within the week and would work with my insurance. read more

Dr Jill was excellent. Very thorough and great bedside manner. The tech that did my xrays was also very professional and friendly. I highly recommend. my only issue is that for new patients they won't schedule a cleaning until AFTER a person has seen the doctor which makes it difficult to plan but otherwise, excellent. Overall good experience from the initial call to the initial exam and x-rays. Dr. Tesoro was awesome. He examined my teeth and mouth thoroughly and was gentle and kind. All the staff were polite and professional. They let me know the co-pay cost of the next visit which was nice. The downside is I have to wait 2 more months to get my teeth cleaned and then they will make an appointment with the periodontist and who knows how much longer that will be. They know teeth need the periodontal cleaning. It seemed odd that appointment couldn't be made until the next visit. read more

I have been going to these Doctors for years and I LOVE THEM! Funny, professional, and amazing customer service. It is important to me, as a patient, to be informed of what is happening, what procedure will be performed, and that it be performed in a kind and professional manner, I have never dreaded cleanings or any mouthwork. I had one really bad experience with a hygienist, many years ago, and kindly asked that she not be my hygienist in the future... no problem... they promptly replaced her and I have adored my current hygienist. The Admin staff are professional, and if there are any questions, they let me know my costs, what my insurance covers, and they work with me to ensure I don't have to pay out of pocket more than necessary. Dr. Nestor Santiago was so sexist, rude, unprofessional and condescending, I ended up walking out of the appointment. He did not listen to the things I told him, asked the same question over and over again, and when I left, snidely told me to "have a nice life". I have to say though, the office staff and the x-Ray tech (Zola) were extremely sweet and professional. I did reschedule my appointment with one of the owners of the practice, so we'll see how that goes. read more

I've been going to Island Ohana Dentists for almost ten years, and I and my family have always had a great experience. The office is modern and comfortable, the staff is super friendly, and the hygienists (especially Janice! ) are really gentle and kind. I'm a little nervous about dental care, but they always make me glad I came. I've seen Dr. Jill and Dr. Garrett, and they are both exceptionally skillful and painless. Their prices are great and they have always tried to avoid costly procedures as long as possible. read more

They clamped my gums multiple times, glued my teath together on a filling, didn't let me go to my appointment when I was $30 short(long time returning customer) then after everything. They don't let me rescedual, because I apparently had missed 3 other appointments in the last 5 years. So I'm never going there again. My family have been with this practice for 6 years. After all this time, because I had to reschedule two appointments for my son (due to illness) I was told that we must find another dentist. The office manager left me a voice-mail stating that they were cancelling all upcoming appointments and that we must find another dentist. This practice has absolutely no regard for professionalism or compassion for individuals. They didn't even give us a warning or any kind of consideration as to why we were forced to reschedule. They also overuse x-rays. Every single visit, whether for a cleaning, checkup no matter, an x-ray is performed. I recommend everyone do themselves a favor and avoid this business. read more

Was seen by Dr. Garrett first time ever visiting. By far the best dentist I've been to in my lifespan. He explained things easily and understandable he didn't try to do more work than my teeth needed. The office staff works with you to make your visit a pleasant one from when you walk in the door to your medical coverage, etc. Office is very clean. I don't like paying for a service before I receive it. But I went along with it. After a couple cleaning visits I needed a root canal. I was in the chair for 2 1/2 hrs for the prep. That's two and a half hours just for the prep! They shot me up 3 times to keep it numb. I should have walked out. I sat there getting more anxious , what a terrible experience. When I returned home and got my senses about me I called the office to complain about the visit. Offered an apology. Months later my wife had a bad molar. They wanted to do a $2200.00 implant with no guarantee that the root canal needed would work from day one. We asked to have tooth pulled. They don't pull teeth, but gave us a referral. That exam and referral cost $145.00. The Dr. they referred us too we find out after his 5 minute exam also doesn't pull teeth, but went on and on about how important an implant is. He charged $180.00 for sitting in his chair for 10minutes and listening to his sales pitch. We went back to Ohana dentistry to complain with my wife's still absest tooth . We were immediately stuck in a back room after asking to talk to an office manager. After a few minutes I asked a girl how long must we wait? Yes maybe over 15 more minutes. That doesn't seem long, but by now we have been in and out of 3 dentist offices around town, fleeced out of some $300.00 and not feeling real good about our day. So we left. I wrote a letter. Weeks later received their response. More apologies. They obviously have enough insurance clients where they don't care about a couple of seniors. I should have trusted my instincts the minute they asked for payment up front for services yet not received. We found another dentist who collects payment after services rendered. Update: our new Hilo Hi dentist is Dr. Igawa. Pretty much 180 degrees different than Ohana dentistry. Great communicator, taking time to explain every detail. ***** 5 Star.. First, every time you go, they say you owe more money, even if you have paid according to the bill they send and what the insurance pays. Second, it's an OK place if you just need cleaning but if you need actual dental services, forget it. Dr Garret Uehara replaced my filling and it hurt so much I had to have another dentist replace the same one within a couple of weeks. As he was injecting the anesthetic, he said for me not to 'hula around': I'm a grown up and I am well able to tolerate a professionally done injection but not this painful jabbing. Also he did not listen to anything I tried to tell him. Avoid at all costs. read more

I went to this dentist to have a minuscule chip filled on my front tooth. It was not visible to the eye but I could feel it when i rubbed my tongue over it. The dentist came in and asked me if i was interested in porcelain veneers and I told her I wasn't. I just wanted to just prevent my chipped tooth from getting worse and I was not interested in veneers since i did not need them. The dentist numbed my mouth and unbeknownst to me she drilled out half of my front tooth and put a filling on it. I could not see what she was doing and it did hurt a bit but I had had a filling put on my rear tooth before so I wasn't suspicious. Afterwards she showed me my tooth in the mirror and told me that she was going to refer me to a dentist who did porcelain veneers anyway. The other dentist called me and told me that he didn't know why she had referred me to him since he no longer did veneers. I told him that I didn't know why she had referred me since I didn't need veneers. Two months later the filling on the front tooth fell off and to my horror half of my front tooth had was missing. She had drilled out half of my tooth!!!! I called the office for an explanation and they said that they would give her my message. She never called me back. I was so mad that I was afraid that if I went to her office I would get arrested for assault! I would have sued her if I had the money for a lawyer! This is absolutely the WORST dentist I have EVER been to. They should be shut down!!! After spending nearly $10,000 on my teeth for braces and being meticulous about my dental care this quack ruined everything I had done in one hour. I still can't even drive by this office without being upset. I hope they get shut down! read more

My granddaughter was seen recently by a dentist at Island Ohana Dental. Although she had no cavities, it was recommended that she have a procedure to protect her from getting them. She was told it was a routine procedure. They put a sealant on all of her molars, upper and lower. The staff was rough with her, and also the dentist didn't sand down the sealant. After the appointment, my granddaughter was getting headaches and having a hard time chewing. When my daughter called to express her concerns, she was told that this sealant on my granddaughter's teeth would wear down over time. Since that advice was unacceptable, my granddaughter went to her childhood dentist for him to review the work. He was surprised that it hadn't been done properly. He sanded the sealant down so that her bite would resume normally. Since the sealant on the molars hadn't been sanded down, it was uneven and affecting her jaw and her bite. In our opinion, this work by Ohana Dental was done unnecessariy and performed incorrectly. I am sure they will receive a generous insurance payment for this unsatisfactory work. Our family does not recommend Ohana Dental and felt it was important to pass this warning along others. read more
