I had lunch here a couple of weeks ago and it was tastey. I was hesitant in getting the pork quesadilla, but I thought, why not. It was good, not like a regular quesadilla at all. It reminded me of a chimichanga? The meat was juicy and I didn't run into those chewy gooey pieces I don't like. It was a good portion and the neat was plenty. I would have happily gave Island Style "5 Stars" because the food was DELICIOUS, however, I had a MAJOR issue with my server. My boyfriend and I went in on a Saturday for brunch/lunch. The place was busy, but we were still seated without waiting. The lady server took our drink order, and then a man server (might have been the busboy?) took our food order. He helped us decide what to order because there were so many great things to choose from, one of which was a side of banana crepes. Our two entrees came out not too long after the order was taken, but the crepes were nowhere to be found, and since the little cafe was busy, there was no one to attend to our missing crepe situation. We decided that it was no big deal because the portions were so generous and delicious that we cleaned our plates. After we finished, the busboy? came back over to ask how everything went and dropped our check. We mentioned that we never received our crepes, he apologized, and THEN the missing waitress came out of the woods to tell my boyfriend and I that our crepes would be right out. REALLY? We has been done eating for over 5 minutes and the check was already on our table. When we told her not to worry about it, she RUDELY said, "You don't want them? They are already made?!!!" Obviously someone forgot to order them for us, and NO we did not want them anymore- we were done. Then she stormed off and LOUDLY shouted into the kitchen "CANCEL THE CREPES!" When I went up to pay the bill, again she was nowhere to be found, and the busboy? told me that he would be right back with my change. Once again the angry waitress shows up to SLAM my change down on the table. Thanks for the Hospitality. I am trying to chalk it up to the fact that maybe she was having a bad day, because we really enjoyed the food- but the nasty waitress ruined it for us. While in SD visiting my friend, she took me to Island Style Cafe. I'll admit, I didn't think it would be all that great just based on the overall ambiance and the fact that there was only one other person inside. I wasn't in the mood for anything breakfast-y so I opted for one of the lunch options, Teriyaki Beef, I think it was. The wait wasn't long, and when the food came out I was pleasantly surprised at the good amount of rice. Nothing is worse than having an off-balance meat to rice ratio. The beef was good and the mac salad was REALLY good. On top of that, our server was very kind. Don't underestimate this place! read more

My new favorite REAL Hawaiian joint. Interior's kinda like Zippy's. My Kaloko moko was fantastic. Eggs were cooked perfectly over-easy with a HUGE burger steak, fried rice and crepe smothered in in gravy seasoned just right. Staff was friendly and checked on us, even though we were take out... Wow! This was so ono! Service with Aloha. I wish I'd known about this place sooner, but my girth is thankful! The fried rice is soooo good! I had the Korean chicken and it was very good. The Kalbi was also very ono. The BBQ chicken tasted just like the Huli Huli chicken I love in Hawaii. And SHAVE ICE! The prices are a little higher than expected for lunch, but the servings are very large and it is well worth it. So thankful we found this. I visited here for breakfast. I had the Island Combo, 2 eggs, 2 "meats," (bacon, sausage, spam of course), toast, and a crepe with 1 topping. Food was good, not greasy, and reasonable portion sizes. I hate breakfast places that pile on the greasy, tasteless potatoes and eggs from a carton, but this place was great. I've had their dinner and the fried rice and veggies are also delish. read more

Yum! We've been on a mission to try all our Hawaiian food options and were very pleased to find this place. The decor is nice enough, some Hawaiian touches but fairly plain. But a nice, clean sit-down restaurant. Service was friendly and competent. Portion sizes were huge - the Korean Chicken could probably serve two, if not three, people. I wish we'd been going straight home afterward so I could've taken my leftovers, because that Korean chicken was phenomenal! Perfectly crispy yet amazingly juicy with delicious sauce. This is stuff you dream of. The teri beef had good flavor (though it came as one large piece, rather than cut into strips as is often seen.) The mac salad got a good review and the salad dressing was really nice (I believe they have Mango & Papaya dressings.) We were far too stuffed after lunch to try their shave ice on this visit, but will need to sample that as well as their other tempting desserts another time. read more

Picked up a couple of Groupon coupons to check this place out. Didn't expect much, boy was I wrong! The food was FANTASTIC, FRESH and PLENTIFUL. (I put that in caps so you know I as shouting). I ordered a combo plate with korean chicken and teriyaki Beef. I didn't need a knife to cut either items it was that tender. The flavors were spectacular. I felt I was back in the island. If ever I am craving Hawaiian food, I get in my car and drive up to Tierrasanta. I have 3 other "Hawaiian" food options near me, and they never satisfy the way this place does. I always go with the kalbi ribs, theyre just my favorite. Everything else Ive had here is also delicious. My toddler lives the teriyaki beef plate. I also really really like the korean chicken (its a much heavier menu option - but if you're not counting calories, freakin go for it!!!). I personally believe they make the BEST macaroni salad EVER. I seriously savor every bite like a greedy little pig. My husband always chooses rice and a salad for his sides, and he is in love with the dressing they put on the salad. Food and service was A+!!! Staff really made us feel welcomed. Place is clean and nicely decorated!!! Food tastes like someone from home made it!!! Dessert was Chantilly cake and it was moist and delicious!!!! Couldn't get enough of their lilikoi iced tea!!!! i wanna come back fro breakfast and try the kaloco moco, it sure looked delish as i was looking through their menu! my friend, cindy g., and i came here last night for dinner. i like that it's a sit down hawaiian joint where we get actual plates and silverware (plastic usually breaks when i eat some ono grinds). cindy and i both ordered a two item combo with the korean chicken and island bbq chicken. you get a choice of either rice or potatoes and mac salad or tossed salad. i got rice and mac salad and my friend got the tossed salad with papaya dressing. i tasted her salad and the dressing was delish! i then tried my mac salad, which was also good. i could tell from the first look that i would like their mac salad, it wasn't bland and had flavor, even some potatoes added in it. onto the korean chicken: mmmmmmmm! i must say that anything fried is a win in my book, but this chicken was marinated in some kind of korean spice goodness. the island bbq chicken was also full of flavor and very tasty. i loved that the chicken wasn't dry! i added some sriracha sauce to add some spiciness and i was in heaven. or so i thought... i had forgotten that cindy ordered kilauea crepe when we asked for boxes for our leftovers. our waiter brought it out before the boxes and it was the perfect ending to a great meal! this little mountain of strawberry goodness, whipped cream, and strawberry jelly on top of a crepe was not too sweet (i'm not a sweets kinda gal) and did just the trick after a heavy meal. there was a bit of custard under the whip cream which added a nice little surprise. good food and good service! i would've ordered some pog drank (papaya, orange, and guava juice) but it doesn't come with free refills. i guess they did the smart thing b.c if i ordered that, they would have run out. read more

Its nice to go some place where it feels like nåna (grandma) was in the kitchen. Ive had my fair share of local food out here on the mainland and they've all tasted pretty standard, I read some of the negative reviews on here and yes everyine is entitled to their own opinions but, anyone who thinks L&L is better than mom and pop diners is either a white boy with bland taste or an asian who was born and bred on the mainland and visited Hawaii one summer and thinks they're a kama'aina all of a sudden. Servers were sweet and tentative, food was B O M B, for the price they charge portions are definitely local style. Every so often the staff would check on us, refill drinks, ask how the food was, or if we needed anything. I ordered the Korean mix plate, kalbi and korean chicken, ono grinds for sure!! My boyfriend ordered hamburger steak with korean chicken as well and I can tell when he really enjoys a meal and this was definitely one he did. We live in Huntington Beach but if I ever make the trek to SD I would for sure go out of my way and make the trip down here! Of course no food compares to home, but this is close, very close. Any islanders living across the big blue away from home give this place a shot!!! read more

This family-owned restaurant has delicious food and fun shaved-ice desserts, but I can't give it a good rating because their customer service is absolutely awful. We have been here several times, each time hoping that the customer service has improved. In fact, I haven't been here in over a year because I was fed up with the service. They are very unaccommodating when it comes to ANY modification, for example we once asked for a crepe to be put on the side rather than on the bottom of the toppings and they wouldn't do it. How hard is it to put a crepe on the side? They flat out said, "We don't do that." I thought I'd give it another change recently and ordered something to go, asking specifically if a particular dish was free of batter coating. The server said it wasn't, that the only dish that has coating is the katsu. We took our food all the way home (15 minutes away) and found it to be battered. Disappointed, we ate the salad part since we were super hungry, but we called and asked for something else and they said to just bring the other one in. I thought this was sort of strange since what were they going to do with it but throw it out? Anyway, we bring it back and they didn't have my replacement dish ready. They looked at the old one and said,"So you want a side order of the BBQ chicken?" I asked why it had to be a side order. After all, I just drove all the way back for a mistake that they made! The girl in charge said because I ate the salad. Really? You can't just replace the whole meal after your server told me erroneous information and I drove all the way home and back? That's the kind of horrible customer service I'm taking about. I eventually got a full replacement meal, but the fact that I had to fight for it, the fact that they can't see things from the customer perspective really makes this place leave a bad taste in my mouth. Again, the food is delicious, but man, their people skills and knowledge of customer service will cause me to never return to this place again. Unless they learn some customer service skills and stop having to control every drop of BBQ sauce and every leaf of lettuce and start caring about making their customers happy, I will continue to tell people NOT to patronize this place. read more

Group of 7 of us went on a Sunday afternoon. This is a regular spot my friends and I like to eat at. Food is great! We usually wait about 10-15 min for a large party. We love the korean chicken, island bbq chicken, salad with mango dressing on the side, mac salad, and potatoes! Just remember that they will charge you $1 something if you order both the mac salad and the salad as your sides. Unfortunately, this visit one of my chickens came out undercooked (pink/raw) and I asked the waiter if he could just give me a newly cooked chicken and to pack up the rest of my food (half of my meal left). He came back with 1 cooked piece of chicken in a take out container and when I asked about the rest of my food...he said he threw it out. I guess I'm more upset that he didn't apologize or anything even when I explained to him that I wanted the rest of my food packaged. He just walked away. We will probably be back because we do like eating here. We were just sad that the waiter failed to have better customer service. read more

As far as quantity, don't expect much. It's not like L&L where the portion is big. I ordered the BBQ mix plate and received a small piece of bbq chicken, 1 piece of bbq meat, and 1 piece of kalbi (short rib) meat. They do give a big scoop of rice and salad. As far as the taste... The kalbi and bbq meat was good, not excellent but good. The bbq chicken was okay. The service was great. I must say even on a bad day, they made me smile. :) read more

I've lived in Tierrasanta for just over a year, and just recently tried this gem of a family run restaurant. The first time I had to go for the Loco Moco because I haven't been able to find a good one since I was last on Maui. This one was even bigger and better than the Maui experience so, of course, I had to go back and try the Kalua Loco Moco with pulled pork instead of a hamburger patty. Since I am a great fan of pulled pork, I was a little skeptical, but wow! was I pleasantly surprised. I just wish I had more days when I could come here for breakfast. Food is definetly spot on! Tried the Korean chicken which I was told was the best seller. I was expecting something like different but overall was tasty. The short ribs were a dissapointment. Korean Style but meat wise was very limited. The chicken katsu was done well, moist and seasoned was spot on. Mac salad was actually a very tasty vs other Hawaiin spots in which is it predominately mayo. This was a good mix of mac and mayo. The fried rice which was pork I was not a big fan of. I think it had a oyster sauce and I am more into soy base fried rices. Overall was a good experience and I would recommend to friends. read more

" Worst Experience Ever !!! " We had a VERY BAD experience on our first visit. And It definitely was our LAST VISIT !! We drove 18 miles to try this cafe. When we got there the Hostess (Owner/Terri) asked if we were expecting 1 more person. We were only 3 so she wanted us to sit at a smaller table. Normally, this is understandable if the restaurant is crowded. HOWEVER, it was not! She led us to a table tucked into an awkward spot and she knew we wanted to watch the Charger game. Now there was 2 maybe 3 tables in use, and at least 10 or so tables that were empty. Terri was NOT going to let us sit at a 4 person table. To say she was Rude is an understatement. The place was 80% empty, it was almost 7pm on Saturday and the Charger game was on tv. Why she would not let us sit at one of the many empty tables was ABSURD !! As I proceeded to tell her that it didn't make sense and she was being rude, she said "never mind", started grabbing menus out of our hands and told us "just go". We could not believe what just happened and over table seating in what was mostly an empty restaurant. Needless to say, our review of this visit is Very POOR to say the least. Customer Service STUNK ! ! ! I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone! It's very sad that they may give Hawaiian "aloha" a bad rep, as there was NO ALOHA there at all ! read more

Absolutely the worst restaurant -- shady practice and amazingly rude service. Bait and switch is what this restaurant should be called. Tonight a friend and I decided to try the restaurant for an early dinner. We arrive at 5:15 and noticed that the place was nearly empty but we said great the service should be fast. Northe case, but where the bait and switch happened is their outdated and confusing menu. We order a dish that said $7.95 not realizing we needed the observatory microscope to read the fine print that detailed the addtional price added after 4pm. Now that wouldn't be so bad if we had received the listed items that the dish detailed for the after 4 pm time. Before 4 pm the dish listed rice, salad, and the island barbecue chicken; which we expected. After eating our meal which we enjoyed, we waited, waited, and finaly asked for our bill. Once we received it we noticed that the price was much higher and we brought it to our waiters attention. She stated that she was sorry but the menues had not been updated. We said okay, but the price on the ticket is incorrect. Then another waiter came to our table and pointed out the fine print and we said we had not seen that but we still didn't get the items that were listed with the after 4pm price. Then a rude waitress comes over to the table and we explain that we did not get what was advertised for the higher price and she says that we get a salad as a replacement for our vegetables; the menu states both salad and vegetables. She called me rude when I said the menu was false advertisement and that it needed to be fixed or they at least should honor the price listed. She got louder and we decided to depart and never to return. I vow to warn everyone about this resturants shady practice in any forum I come across. They need to fix their menu or the wait staff needs to point out the fine print on the menu. read more
