Focus is on the whole student, and helping them to discover who God created them to be rather than trying to fit each student into the perfect mold. Through our older kids, we've also been able to experience the other BCS campus in Woodinville and the junior high and high school campus in Clyde Hill. We have a beautiful house on the border of Issaquah, Newcastle and Renton that use to be zoned the Issaquah School District (where my 2 older children attended, but sadly being on the border line and new construction got us bumped into the Renton school district. We gave the Renton school district K through 2nd to get things right, but it was terrible so we finally faced a decision - move to a better school district or find a better private school. Since we loved our home and neighbors so much, we decided to send our son to Sacred Heart where we were already attending mass as practicing Roman Catholics. From the open house, to "the interview" visit and through my son's first year at Sacred Heart - everything has exceeded our expectations beyond our wildest dreams. The staff is well paid and it shows because they are eager and willing to get a lot accomplished yet make your child feel loved and excited about school. Our son loves going so much that we seriously considered using it as leverage against him when he goes astray because he never wants to miss a day. Despite being in an extremely wealthy 1% part of town, the families have been warm and inviting without any of the snobbery you might expect from 99% of the people we have met. The entire staff - especially the principal - are so engaged that they even take turns helping to open doors for parents at drop off circle in the morning! Show me any public school that does that! Our son loves it and we love being a part of the Sacred Heart family. While it is expensive with 3 years of price increases coming, we do feel it is worth it for what you get. It's also a lot cheaper than moving / re-financing, so if you want a wholesome catholic education that feels like a top notch private school then this is it! Oh and in 6 months my son in 3rd grade has picked up Spanish, typing (on a dedicated Surface Pro!) and sign language! What's more, the day is packed with activity so he never gets bored, but the 3 recesses also means he doesn't feel the pressure that you'd find in a typical Montessori school. Oh, and the lunches are fantastic - unlike the toxic waste they serve in public schools so that was a big plus too. Lastly, I have to point out that prayer and faith are a big part of the program which has been a great relief to us. In these days of political correctness gone wild, it's great to see God and Jesus getting the place they deserve in the curriculum as well as opening and closing day prayers! I could write a book about the things I love about this school, but some of the most important are: 1) That each child is seen and valued by every adult in the building; 2) A multi-age environment where a presentation by a 5 year-old on cupcake baking receives exactly the same respect and engagement as a well researched presentation on nuclear energy by a high school junior (a real life example); 3) Extensive time spend outdoors including longer than typical lunch and recess for all ages; 4) Measuring academic progress by the extent to which each learner grows through discomfort and disequilibrium into new skills and deep understanding; 5) Kids learn at the Attic because it is safe to make mistakes; 6) Community, community, community. Learners at the Attic do not produce large quantities of "work product." Parents that want to see a lot of worksheets completed and graded on a weekly basis may feel anxious about what their child is learning. My oldest is very academic and the flexible pace of Chrysalis provided her with a vehicle to move at an accelerated pace through the subject matter that interested her the most. She felt very prepared for college and is working on a master's degree currently. My son's focus is soccer, not academics, but he's warmed up to school, because of the Chrysalis model, and feels as confident as ever to enter college and succeed. Not to trash the public school education, I was a product of it and enjoyed it, but I don't believe they would have been able to cope with high school in the same way due to their set of circumstances.

The school knowingly accepts students with special needs but lacks the training or experience to deal with situations that arise as a result of those disabilities. My son has anxiety and high-functioning autism. In the first 2 weeks of school, he experienced a consistently disorganized educational experience. Class schedules changed regularly, without much notice. His teachers would change, also without much notice. My son's calendar would often be missing the invites for the remote class. I would have to call the school multiple times a day to get the meeting links. Teachers would be late to class (which are a short 30 minutes). The school regularly assured us of their experience with special needs children, yet continued to engage in highly triggering behaviors. When my son's disability manifested by missing some classes and cursing (once) in an email to a teacher, they used it as an opportunity to kick him out of the school. The real issue was that they were dealing with a staffing shortage and my son's disability presented an opportunity for them to solve for a business challenge. They tried to spin my son's behavior as a flagrant violation. A school that is intolerant of the messiness of children should re-examine whether they should be in the business of education. A school that lacks empathy for children with disabilities, yet knowingly accepts them and is surprised when the disability manifests is really just an unethical, for-profit business. Chrysalis does a good job of marketing, but be very careful about sending your children here. The narrative of personalized education and helping children that are struggling is simply not true. The narrative is appealing for parents who are looking for a school they can partner with, but don't be misled by the marketing.
