This review is solely based on my current experience trying to get my son situated for kindergarten…read more(2018-19 school year). When my husband and I bought our house, a big draw was the school district. Flash forward five years and our son is ready to start. What a nightmare this experience has been. Not only is our local school overcrowded (Fernwood) but we are being sent to Frank Love for kindergarten. Between the front office staff in both schools being extremely uninformative and curt when I ask questions to the before and after school programs not being helpful (looking at you, Northshore YMCA) I have started calling around to private and/or Montessori schools in the neighborhood just to get out of this mess. (Don't get your hopes up, folks - they're all booked too). I've asked for a deference to a school that's closer so that I can keep my son is his current daycare for before and after care but have been told "you probably won't get it but it's your right to try" and that they couldn't tell me whether or not I'd qualify until the last week of August. This is not only inconvenient for my current daycare provider but for my son and my husband and I as well. On top of the before and after school care issues, we've been told that bus rides are now 50 minutes long. To go five miles. Are we serious?? The school district website is a mess - most schools aren't up to date (Frank Love hasn't had a new letter from the principal since 2016) and, quite frankly, this whole experience has made me want to put my kid into another district completely. There is no consistency, nobody is aligned and the overcrowding is flat out annoying. Get it together Northshore. You aren't instilling confidence in new parents to the district, you're making it very inconvenient for parents who have kids in two different elementary schools and your staff needs some serious training (both office and teaching). This trickles from the top down so maybe we need to start looking at our superintendent and assistant superintendent for resolve.

My son has grown immensely in his three years and my daughter has come out of her shell in her first two. I cannot thank the staff enough for investing in my children; they have gone above and beyond any expectations and have treated my family like their own. We wanted our children to know and love Jesus while getting a first class education: HCA does exactly that.

The P5 teacher Jennifer is exactly the same but hides behind the director. Encouraged my family to seek an IEP solely as a means to kick my kindergarten age daughters out. Tried to circumvent the IEP process by trying to reach out to the care team to gain a recommendation that supported their goal of kicking my kid out. When that failed the principal lied about what the care team recommended. Bullied, harassed, and finally attempted to blackmail my family into voluntarily pulling my kid out in the last few months of the school year. This behavior started escalating the day of our IEP assessment and ended in a forced reduction of service before any accommodation request was made. This was after a glowing assessment of my daughter's growth. When I made a complaint about discrimination against the Preschool Director they declined to investigate without so much as a call to discuss my concerns.

Both are student athletes, which requires a very flexible schedule to deal with all of the travel to events and tournaments. Their teachers genuinely cared about them. Chrysalis does a great job of placing the students with teachers that can allow them to see their potential. My kids speak highly about all of their teachers. My oldest is very academic and the flexible pace of Chrysalis provided her with a vehicle to move at an accelerated pace through the subject matter that interested her the most. She felt very prepared for college and is working on a master's degree currently. My son's focus is soccer, not academics, but he's warmed up to school, because of the Chrysalis model, and feels as confident as ever to enter college and succeed. Not to trash the public school education, I was a product of it and enjoyed it, but I don't believe they would have been able to cope with high school in the same way due to their set of circumstances.

The way an institution treats its most vulnerable is telling of its values and ethics. The…read moreChrysalis lacks integrity and grossly misrepresents its ability to teach children with anxiety or autism. The school knowingly accepts students with special needs but lacks the training or experience to deal with situations that arise as a result of those disabilities. My son has anxiety and high-functioning autism. In the first 2 weeks of school, he experienced a consistently disorganized educational experience. Class schedules changed regularly, without much notice. His teachers would change, also without much notice. My son's calendar would often be missing the invites for the remote class. I would have to call the school multiple times a day to get the meeting links. Teachers would be late to class (which are a short 30 minutes). The school regularly assured us of their experience with special needs children, yet continued to engage in highly triggering behaviors. When my son's disability manifested by missing some classes and cursing (once) in an email to a teacher, they used it as an opportunity to kick him out of the school. The real issue was that they were dealing with a staffing shortage and my son's disability presented an opportunity for them to solve for a business challenge. They tried to spin my son's behavior as a flagrant violation. A school that is intolerant of the messiness of children should re-examine whether they should be in the business of education. A school that lacks empathy for children with disabilities, yet knowingly accepts them and is surprised when the disability manifests is really just an unethical, for-profit business. Chrysalis does a good job of marketing, but be very careful about sending your children here. The narrative of personalized education and helping children that are struggling is simply not true. The narrative is appealing for parents who are looking for a school they can partner with, but don't be misled by the marketing.
