    Donair with fries
    Jennie L.

So we went here for a quick bite to eat. Think of a fast food atmosphere. This is not a place to linger and feel welcome. Clean enough but lacks personality and atmosphere. Menu is is basic Middle East food - donairs etc. I was annoyed that there was a lack of vegatarian options (ie falafels) but for most people the menu will be sufficient. I ordered the letil soup and the chese pide (think of a pizza ut shaped differently) and my husband ordered the donair with fries. Food was really really well done. Lentil soup was flavourful, the cheese pide was crisp and tasty and rich without it feeling too greasy, and my husband's donair was a perfect blend of onion and meat and sauce and veggies. I don't eat meat much, but I would order this. Service was super friendly.

I came here with my wife, the food and atmosphere was fantastic. I highly recommend you stop by and give it a taste. For dessert we had Kunefe.. you HAVE to have this. Best in town. Love this place and will be back

    Hanging with the bestie

The bestie suggested this place, and when I saw the location, I was like uh-oh... There had been a different mediterranean place there before, and it was not as good as Safir is. Glad I went! The place is clean with an interesting decor. Turkish music in the background was a nice touch. It is a cafe style place, but I really didn't mind. Like I said--super clean. The service was polite and attentive--the guys were really easy going and we felt really comfortable. We asked what they'd suggest and I according to my receipt it was Adana Kebab and Sac Tava. At any rate, they were both good sized portions and perfectly delicious--not too spicy. They both came with rice and the kebab came with a salad as well. The bestie and I shared both dishes. But ooh, I loved that Sac Tava. Dessert was Kunefe, and I'm at a loss to describe it. Like maybe a baclava style chow mein with the teensiet noodles known to man? Anyway, if you enjoy baclava, you will enjoy Kunefe. Round that off with a Turkish tea and dinner was complete satisfaction. Ah, and the tea came in tiny mason jars with handles and they smelled like honey. Bliss on such a miserable day. And the price was pretty good too. I was happy with it. I was happy with all of it, and I can't wait to come back again. I gotta try that donair sandwich.

    Kebab Trio

Excellent Turkish cuisine Found this restaurant via a google search this summer and had been meaning to visit for months. Finally got around to stopping in today for lunch on the way to visit my Aunt. It was a well worthwhile stop. Safir is located in a strip mall housing many businesses including a Giant Tiger store and a Bingo hall. Parking lot was very crowded and has a large number of "15 minute only" spots, I'm assuming because of the aforementioned Bingo establishment. Arrived at the restaurant at 11:30am and there were no patrons at the time. We were greeted by one of the staff who came out from the back. He asked if we had been to the restaurant before to which we told him No. So he took some time to explain the menu. The menu list is posted up above the order counter. You place your order up at the counter and they bring out your food. After a few questions, we determined what we wanted. I opted for the Adana kebab and my dining companion went for the kebab trio which consisted of consisted of Lamb, Adana and Chicken kebabs. While we waited for our food, they prepared fresh bread for us which was brought out straight from the oven. As we had not been there before, the person explained our "balloon" bread was fresh out of the oven. It was puffed up like a pillow but when we ripped it open [watch out for hot steam coming out] it collapsed down to something more like a standard pita or flat bread. The bread was served with 3 dips including a carrot and yogurt one that my friend enjoyed. With our bread, we enjoyed some Turkish tea and a soft drink. After a short wait, our entrees were brought out. They were served with a rice pilaf and three types of salad. Portions were plentiful and the food was very good and authentic Turkish cuisine. On the way out, in somewhat broken english, the cook asked me what I thought and I told him it was excellent! By the time we left, there were several tables occupied by people enjoying lunch. Food must be authentic as we were the only English speaking table of patrons, this is a good sign for authenticity of the cuisine I will return and try a few more dishes as what we went with this time was quite standard for Turkish food. For a no-frills solid dining experience, I would recommend Safir next time you are on the north side and are looking for good kebabs.

After the Simit house closed on whyte Ave, I'm desperately looking for a similar Turkish restaurant and I think I just find the perfect replacement. Istanbul kebab makes the perfect Mediterranean food that just right for my tummy. Portions are great, taste is fabulous. Just one heads up, the food present will be a little bit different from how they look like on the menu, veggies are different, but they taste good anyway.

Both were excellent and creamy and the bread is amazing. It is made to order with the wood fire oven. Absolutely lovely. Then we had assorted meat which included meat balls, lamb chops, swordfish and chicken. All were cooked well and tasty, although besides the meatballs, the marinate seemed the same. It would be nice to get other flavours. A bulgur pilaf which was delicous and perfectly cooked and tomato-ey and a lovely dressed green salad came to accent the meat. For dessert a less sweet baklava which is perfect in my opinion and a good ending to the dinner.

Both the dessert and the meat were quite good--the dessert for its crispiness and flavour, and the meat for the portion size and how well it was cooked. That said, the meat still tasted different compared to similar dishes I've had in Europe. The hummus was a bit too sour and not as thick as I prefer. Overall, I'd give it 8/10.

Hummus and yogurt added more flavour to the food. The portion size was generous that I was able to pack another meal for the next day. We were offered tea at the end of our meal. I think it was rose tea. It was strong and I liked it without any sugar. As we enjoyed sipping on our tea, we were offered a plate of rice pudding. It was a nice gesture. I really enjoyed the sweet rice pudding with a sprinkle of pistachios. It paired well with the tea. It was delicious and a great way to finish the meal.
