That's definitely not a requirement for GYN's but when you're about to have a piece of metal shoved inside your cervix, it would be kind of comforting. The second appointment I had with her, I got a checkup on my IUD and I asked her if I could cut my septate hymen, which had been interfering with my sex life. I requested numbing medication and she quickly argued with me and said that it would be more pain to get numbing medication. I hesitantly agreed, now a million times more scared because she's about to cut a part of my vagina off, with no pain medication. She then gave me the option of cutting it completely off or just cutting the middle. Initially, I wanted it completely gone, but without the numbing medication I was scared and overwhelmed. She told me to lay back and she would get ready while I decided. I couldn't decide and I started to panic as she sat down with with my hymen between her fingertips. She hurriedly asked me if I'd decided yet and told me I was running out of time and joked that she was going to decide for me, the nurse helping her laughed. I nervously chuckles and apologized, beginning to explain that it's a hard decision and I was scared. Before I had the chance to finish explaining, she cut my hymen. Once, in the middle. It shocked me, I screamed out in pain and shock. She laughed and said, 'there that wasn't so bad, was it?'. She then left the room without saying anything to me and the nurse explained to me that there might be some bleeding for the next few days and if it hurts to just take a tylenol. I sat there in shock, bleeding all over and eventually broke down in tears. I've had many gynecologist experiences and this was hands down the worst experience I have ever had with any doctor. I will never ever be going back.

My visit to Functional Nutrition Resources in Owasso, Ok was disappointing and unsettling. After…read morereading several FB reviews, I was hopeful that they could assist me with hormone balance and weight loss. I made an appointment for one of their classes and drove 2 hours to attend. It was advertised as a dinner meeting. At the start of the meeting they announced that they just got word that dinner was not going to be delivered. Interesting that there was no set up or room for anyone to eat dinner, so I question if it was ever in the plan. Hmmm! Throughout the presentation participants were asked how serious individuals were to change their life. It was expressed that if you were serious you would do anything to make changes. It was also expressed that they didn't accept everyone into their practice. At the end of the presentation the pitch was made that for $89 you could fill out paperwork and they would consider you for their practice. After driving two hours and eager to get some assistance, I was ready to make some changes. I filled out paperwork, and stayed overnight for an appt. the next morning. Upon my arrival, I was given a tour of their small office. A "Welcome (my name)" was posted on a chalkboard in the sitting area of the office for all to see. I am sure it would seem personal to some, but felt intrusive to me. I was told once again that Jeanette didn't accept just anyone into their practice. They pointed out six success stories on the wall. I was told I would meet with Jeanette and her husband. Several minutes later my meeting started with Jeanette only. Her husband never joined us. She proceeded to talk about my paperwork and said she had some thoughts on how they could help me. It was alot of talking in circles. No specifics were ever given on the plan she had. I asked questions on different approaches and what food plans (Paleo, Whole Foods, Plant based, Keto, etc.) they would be recommending. She said her approach was more "ancestral"... ???? Again no specifics were given. Many supplements would cost extra. Then the bottom line! Even though I am on no meds and desired assistance with hormone imbalance and weight loss, I was astounded at the bottom line. I was told they would work with me for 6 months (some visits & online videos) and then 3 months maintenance (email & phone calls). Knowing I lived 2 hours away, I wouldn't need to come all that frequently. The cost? $6,000! Insurance was not accepted. If interested, I was encouraged to make a significant down payment that day and make arrangements with their finance company to pay out the rest. Needless to say, this is something I would never do! I did lose $89. As an educated, professional woman the experience felt very deceptive. I am grateful for having a strong spiritual/moral compass in my life. All my internal alarms went off. Perhaps the large price tag was their way of not accepting me into their practice.

I have no words to explain how wonderful Emily was or how much she improved our birth experience. She was always available prior to the birth by phone or text and our in person meetings with her felt relaxed and added to my excitement. On the day of our baby's birth she kept in touch and then came over as soon as I said maybe I wanted her. Prior to and during labor her massage skills were amazing and her voice through contractions kept me calm. She even gave my husband a massage to calm him a bit. Our home birth was everything we hoped it could be and I credit a lot of that to Emily. It is hard for me to find the right words to exactly describe how amazing and gifted Emily is so I will share the email I wrote to Emily when my husband and I were still glowing from the experience. I hope she won't mind! "Emily, Chris and I are still on a high from how absolutely incredible and perfect we view Dahlia's birth. We feel so lucky that things went exactly as we envisioned. That seems to be a rare outcome these days and we are truly blessed. Seeing your doula skills in action made me realize that some people truly do have a calling. I saw an article today titled something like, reasons you don't need a doula and I just laughed. There is no way I could have had the birth experience I had without you. I think we need to discuss you canceling this silly move to OK." When we met for my postpartum visit I talked to Emily about flying her up to NYC for subsequent births. I think it says a lot that with all of the talented doulas in NYC, I don't want to mess with success and really need Emily by my side. NYC has suffered a great loss with Emily's move to OK. My husband's input: Emily just gets pregnant women and knew exactly what my wife needed during labor probably better than my wife knew - counter pressure, massage and encouragement. She even rubbed my neck when the stress was getting to me and made it easier for me to get in a nap. I don't even want to think what the experience would have been like without Emily. That's why we need her back for the next baby.
