I went to see Annie about adding soft long layers to my hair. I've attached the inspo pic for reference, and pictures of the cut I received. When I went home and washed it, it dried into a more shag inspired cut. There's a big difference between what I requested and the choppy and uneven cut I got. It's a hard haircut to disguise and my confidence has taken a blow. I spoke to Annie over the phone, and at my mention of the cut being a shag like she accused me of further cutting it once I had gotten home and told me she felt I was gaslighting her. This was within the first two minutes of our call and was really jarring. I offered to send her a photo to show what I was talking about but she refused, stating she'd only look in person. Her accusations were uncalled for and disrespectful, and I wasn't comfortable going back. I then spoke to the owner, Casey, and expressed how upsetting this was to experience. She ignored it entirely, gave no apology, and tried to reschedule me, even though it was obviously an issue that affected me wanting to return. I understand their policy requires them to look at the cut in person, but nobody would want to go in after being called a liar and a gaslighter. I said I was uncomfortable seeing her for my hair if she thinks this kind of treatment towards a client warrants no apology from the business. She came back with "our policy does not include refunds for non apologies." Overall, I'm shocked at the lack of professionalism and unnecessary snarkiness from the both the stylist and owner. Their website states they value creating a safe and comfortable environment for their clients, and review responses say that they hold their guest experiences to a very high standard. This could not be farther from what I experienced as a disappointed yet polite customer. Accusing clients of gaslighting and lying does not foster this kind of "safe" environment, and refusing to apologize for this kind of experience does not make customers trust you and want to come sit in your chair. I feel like this could have been avoided with a genuine apology on behalf of anyone involved. read more

I can't recommend Ivey, but I wish could. I care about how businesses treat people. If you're a patron here, you can't trust that your stylist will be treated well. I also value good communication, and Ivey proved themselves to be poor communicators. If a business treats its staff poorly, you can assume they'll do the same to customers. My Ivey service experience eventually turned poor, and that's how I learned their poor management style too. One day, I came to an appointment and was told that my stylist "isn't here". I was given a different stylist that day. She was nice, but the cut wasn't good. She was new. I think a few months cutting hair. No worry. I figured it would get fixed up at my next appointment, assuming my stylist was just sick or something and would return in the future. What Ivey didn't make clear was that "she's not here" meant "she left the salon and isn't coming back". When I came for my next cut, I was surprised by the inexperienced stylist again. Ivey should have called me and told me that my stylist was gone from the very beginning. Instead, I got surprised twice by a new stylist. I should be able to trust that they'll give clear and up front communication. What if I don't want the new stylist? What if I want to choose a different stylist at the same salon? It felt like they were trying to sneakily keep me coming back. The new cuts were underwhelming, but they still cost the same $80! Probably one of the most expensive men's cuts you can get in Ann Arbor. Charge what you're worth. It's definitely not the same value as my fabulous, experienced stylist. I would have at minimum chosen a different stylist, but they never proactively offered that. Not a very smart business decision, since I'll never return or recommend them to anybody. When I finally asked directly, I was told that my stylist was not there anymore. I love the cuts she gives and would happily drive twice the distance to see her. I first came to Ivey b/c my stylist was called out by name in online reviews as giving great men's cuts. Yes, there were other aspects of Ivey that were nice, but I was a loyal patron to my stylist not the salon. Ivey's poor management of the situation didn't stop there. Once I relocated my stylist and scheduled an appointment, I learned that Ivey was pushing her out of the new salon by enforcing a noncompete. They forced her out of the area, and once again I had to hunt for her new location. How ridiculous and punitive for a business to do that to an individual worker. She didn't steal trade secrets or set up a competing salon. She took her talents elsewhere. Let it go. Their choices show a lack of respect for people and a willingness to be petty and vindictive. Noncompetes are unenforceable and illegal in other states b/c they often force workers to either stay in a job they want to leave or bear other significant harms and costs, such as being forced to switch to a lower-paying job, being forced to relocate, being forced to leave the workforce altogether, or being forced to defend against expensive litigation. I can't support a business that puts its employees in that position. Ivey lacks an understanding that businesses themselves aren't what's special. People make the business special. I found all my interactions with Ivey staff to be good, especially with my stylist, but it seems that top-level management/the owners are a whole different story. Sad. If you care about how your stylist is treated, good communication, or a long-term good customer experience, spend your money elsewhere. Happily, my stylist's new location is now a third of the distance from my home and I don't have to pay for parking anymore. I also get the best cut of my life again, instead of paying $80 for a subpar cut at salon with poor business practices. For a great men's cut (or all genders!), look up Mackenzie at Betty Green Studios in Ypsi. Don't worry about the $150 "first time cut" fee. My cut was half that amount b/c she charges by the hour, which wasn't totally clear from their online scheduling system. read more

10s, 10s, 10s across the board! Casey is one of the most genuine and thoughtful humans I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. She is highly knowledgeable and v talented. I've been seeing her for a few months now and I have been more than happy with her work every single time. She is observant, listens, and remembers. Which is impressive given that I'm sure she works with an extensive client base. Everything she has recommended for me has been spot on, from cuts to products. She's also as kind as it gets and works very hard to create a safe, inclusive, and aesthetically pleasing space for anyone and everyone. Every other member of her staff that I've interacted with has also been no less than A+ human beings. I love them all so much and can't recommend them enough! read more

I reached out to Ivey about my experience privately to see if they would acknowledge it, but they never did. So I've moved on to writing a public review. I originally made two appts with Casey the salon owner, one for a haircut and one for haircolor, because I wanted to add a splash of blue in my bangs and wanted to make sure there would be time for it. I even called the salon and made sure there would be time and they assured me Casey was good about making time for things like that. But then the day before my haircut, she had to cancel due to a sick child, so she asked if I would rather use a different stylist or get my hair cut and colored all in one day? The salon had told me they would show Casey the pictures I had sent of the blue hair, so I naturally assumed she knew to make time for it. So I was ecstatic to get it all done at once. Come the day of the appt. I had to travel an hour to get there because we're waiting to move into our new house. When I sat in her chair, i told her what I wanted and showed her pictures and she told me right away "I don't have time to do the blue." I didn't want to come back later because of how far I have to drive, so we just agreed to just do all black this time. But I was already not happy and rubbed the wrong way. I brought pictures for my haircut and explained I did not want a mullet, but wanted a shag with ends that were not straight across or blunt. I also explained to her I was VERY nervous and anxious because I've had a lot of bad experiences in the past with my hair, anxiety around getting hair done is a real thing! Before washing my hair, she went right into my bangs and just started cutting. You would think after me explaining my anxieties, she would be more considerate of what I was feeling or stop to make sure it was the right length, etc etc. But before I could even form a thought, she was done. My bangs were too short and cut back too far past my eyebrows so I looked very young, and my already big square face looked even squarer and bigger. What could I do? It had been cut. I get a lot of people like their bangs like that nowadays, but that's not what I had in my pictures. Plus, I later noticed one side was cut back further than the other. Next, we did the haircut (my hair was colored at this point now) and I tried so hard to explain what I wanted, but I just couldn't seem to describe it to her. And she didn't seem to understand (but she did tell me she did), and she cut anyways. When we were all done, she gave me a mirror so I could see the back and, what-do-ya-know, my ends in the back were blunt, heavy and straight across my back. Had I not been so anxious or nervous about going to a new stylist in a new state, had I not been having a totally awful day and had my mind set on my hair (I thought getting your hair done was supposed to be relaxing and freeing?), I would've been clearer about it being tapered or v-shaped in the back, but I could not find my words. At this point, I knew I had to say something. So I tried to explain to her again and finally found the word "V-shaped." She told me "You never said that to me." At this point, I think she actually got angry at me and was upset/annoyed. I mean, I didn't want to be one of those clients that walks out pretending to love it and then complains later, you know? I wanted to be upfront with her, I always was with my last good stylist, I was never mean or "Karen" about it. I went to go sit back down to have her fix it and instead of sitting me down to give my haircut the attention it needed, she kept me standing and hacked a V-shape into the ends with the razor tool. Very quickly, within 30 seconds to a minute. And then told me I was done. We hardly spoke a word to each other while walking me to the front desk to pay (I think because I was in shock of how she attempted to fix my hair), it was SO awkward and so incredibly uncomfortable for me as the client! It's like she just wanted to get me out of there, or at least that's how it felt. I could feel the anger radiating off of her. This was one of the most uncomfortable salon experiences I've ever had, and even though the color turned out great, I don't think I'll ever go back because I was so traumatized by the way I was treated. Casey and I did not seem to click on a personal level, which I know happens, but her lack of patience for someone with anxiety around getting their hair done was pretty surprising. I mainly just wanted to write this review so if there are others like me out there with anxiety around getting their hair done, maybe steer clear of this one and look for the next. As I mentioned before, I did try to reach out to the salon to report my experience maybe just to clear the air and give them a chance to respond and right the situation, but they didn't reply. read more

The most fun haircut I've had in the best environment. I have curly/wavy hair and just moved to town and was looking for somewhere that was reliable, fun and seemed trustworthy. This was my first time at an Aveda salon and it was a joy. From the moment I walked in the women at the front desk were kind, welcoming and made me feel at home. They all threw out ideas of what I could do to my hair. I came in with the idea of a trim and some layers but after reading all the reviews and bios of the experts I knew I would probably let them have some fun. I selected Camille based off of her bio and reviews and was so grateful - she is a joy to be with and knows her stuff. She shared what she was going to do before she started which was awesome and listened to what I was nervous about. We wound up doing a (tame) shag which I've gotten so many compliments already and feel so confident in. She worked with my hair and face shape rather than doing a basic cookie cutter cut which I often get with salons that don't know what to do with curly hair. She told me about the products and ways she was styling without ever forcing them upon me or making me feel like I had to get them. The community of the salon is clearly tight knit and feels so chill and comforting which is awesome. I couldn't recommend this spot more for a great cut that is as edgy or classic as you want. Great for wavy and curly cuts without having to deal with Deva cuts that often leave me underwhelmed. Incredible pricing. I will be back! I usually get my hair cut every year and a half but based on the experience and pricing I think that will be more frequent just because I loved it haha! Sarah was awesome! I came in for an all-over dye (to fix a box-dye job) and haircut. She explained the best ways to take care of the new dye and asked my preferences for styling my hair so she could cut the layers, so that they'd look good with however much effort I'd realistically put into styling them. When I asked for prices for each service (because my hair is longer than average) she explained how much each aspect would cost so I could make an educated decision on what I wanted to receive. She even explained to me how I can style my hair similarly at home and what type of products to use to look like the pictures of the haircut I brought in. As far as safety, she wore gloves, a mask, and cleaned and wiped everything down frequently. IVEY is also a great space to be able to be socially distant from other guests while receiving services. I have been very pleased with the service I received at Ivey in the past. Every stylist that I've met has been kind, helpful and skilled in their profession. I've left with a lot of haircuts I liked a lot, as well as some great color. They've also helped me make sure to stay within my budget. However, when my mother called to make an appointment today, we discovered that our whole family had been banned from the salon? We've been wracking our brains to figure out what we possibly could have done wrong that would warrant being completely barred, and we can't think of anything. The worst part is that they won't tell us what we have done wrong though we asked very politely for a reason and didn't even ask them to change their decision-we just want to know what the issue is. We all try to be kind and considerate people in our daily lives. We're insulted and confused about what could have happened. I do not recommend going here if you are socially anxious. They claim to be a safe space, but this is not the type of behavior that I expect from people who say that. Anything you say could apparently be taken wrong-that, or, they have made a mistake and refuse to correct it, which is also a huge problem. Not happy. read more

I took a chance on Ivey as my new salon and I am so happy I did. I needed color/cut and chose Camille as my stylist. I have to say, I was elated with every aspect of my time in her chair. She was professional, but truly friendly and authentic. I am not one for stiff hair salon chatter - I would rather stare at the wall. But Camille was a true pleasure to speak with as she turned my hair into a beautiful golden hue. I walked out of that salon feeling fantastic! I have been to many salons/stylists that will over work my hair, but Camille mastered it in one sitting. I have beautiful warm honey highlights that just glow.
