He…read morethinks at lightening speed and is typing away to give you a detailed researched response/ideas to questions you have. He is "the specialist" for UC applications. I would trust his advice in this area (ie, classes etc.). He was very active in helping my son with his PIQs and common app. James helped him pick topics that James felt could reveal the most about my son and helped him brain storm ideas. My son was a bit stubborn and didn't follow his advice on some points which made writing a bit hard I think. James also showed him how to research and answer the why us essays. My son is usually a fast thinker and worker but writing about himself was a real struggle. We started with James late and wished we had found him sooner so that he wasn't trying to get through individual applications while studying for school. James helped my son get early action at USC, early admissions at Berkeley, and all the UCs with medical schools that he applied to. His UPenn admissions officer wrote a response about his essay that made him felt heard and understood. James doesn't make you feel like you have to do anything that isn't authentic to you to be "competitive"; he doesn't make you a cookie cutter applicant. His advice takes into account the individual. Because those high-demand teachers are often requested a week in advance, it can be difficult to book them last minute. Most teachers are good and will ensure you understand the material, especially if you come prepared with specific questions. With the strongest instructors, you're thoroughly covered. They make sure their explanations are clear and detailed, and they check for understanding. With the less effective teachers, you may need to advocate for yourself more and do additional work independently to get your doubts resolved. Math instruction here is a particular strength!!Shout-out to my goat Victor, his guidance helped me ace a Pre-Calculus test I was convinced I was going to die during. On SAT prep specifically: after attending both Elite and C2 bootcamps, I personally no longer believe SAT prep courses are even worth it. just get good at desmos bro, you don't need to even know math to do well (as someone who scored 1500). If you are set on doing a bootcamp however, C2 was by far the better experience between the two. For college applications, I would not recommend spending your hours here. While they offer college-app help, in my experience they're not especially attuned to what admissions offices prioritize, nor do they try to research it at all. You'll likely get more value from the excellent (and free) resources available on YouTube. That said, their writing + ELA support for school is fine so dw about that. MADE coffee is almost right next door and I love getting coffee before I go in Saturday mornings, that is a mega plus. overall, I really like coming here and it has saved my butt multiple times. the community of it all is wonderful and they make you feel encouraged no matter what. I'm someone who has to engage with a topic multiple times to understand something, so often I feel pretty stupid when I go to other places for tutoring help, but I never feel like that at all here! I feel safer to ask questions I would feel stupid for asking at other places. edit: a lot of my experience with this place has been during the summer before senior year, and I've heard that the vibe at C2 is a lot different during summers, so that should be something to note

Over the summer program, I was not only taught how to approach these standardized tests but how to approach studying--habits that I was able to carry over into Cal. I had over 700 point increase after 2 summer programs. Not only did this Elite program help me with my test scores, the whole staff was a wonderful support group and guided me through the college application process. They not only supplemented the little knowledge that I had about the college application process, but also gave me advice and tips with how to approach my college life experience. The programs may be rigorous, but as we all should know: "you reap what you sow" Put in the hard work and keep an open mind and voracious appetite of a student. I was one of those kids at Elite who were lazy and unmotivated. Parents forced me to come. I was…read moreoften the class clown and a punk towards the staffers/proctors at the front desk. The only benefits I saw, at the time, were 'shortcuts' to answering questions on the SAT and the one on one college counseling / essay writing with Julian Chou. Everything else felt like a waste of my time. I came to summer boot camps to make friends, some of whom I still keep in touch with. Looking back, all of that went a long way. Sure, some might argue it's not worth the money but it really depends on how the student takes advantage of all the resources. I certainly didn't take advantage of all of them but all the instructors are specialized in specific subjects and are quite knowledgeable. Some of these instructors already have full time jobs yet they take their time during or outside of Elite classes to help students. If you can study independently, props to you but most high school students can't. I couldn't. And in this way, Elite was very helpful, using both former and original test questions to evaluate how you'd score on a real test. I enjoyed all my teachers (few whom I still keep in touch with) and the staff, yes they were mean. They were too direct and condescending. However in retrospect, considering how annoying I must've been, imagine that multiplied with hundreds more. Elite wants their students to take practice tests as if it's the real setting. You can't talk, text, or cheat and you shouldn't fall asleep. I attended Elite about 10 years ago. I wasn't close to a 2400 nor did I get into an Ivy League. But considering what I've achieved since then, I can't thank them enough for prepping me for that very first step to 'adulthood': college.
