They also give 'dharma talks' from prepared scripts - not very Zen! Perhaps it is confusion like this that lead to their teacher, the renowned Joko Beck, leaving and renouncing them as not representing her teaching. More like a recovery group for disenchanted practitioners as faith is an important part of practice that they seem to lack. I would recommend going somewhere else for anyone who wants to make progress on a spiritual path.

There is so much care, precision, and love dedicated to the space, making sure to keep the vibration as high as possible. Very accepting and understanding energy - which was super intimidating at first! I was able to center my Earth Star with Lori's help and it was really disorienting at first, but I knew it's what my soul really needed as I've been "out of body" for most of my life. I took a reiki 1 certification course and on the second day, she got weird. To me she felt a little paranoid of "bad energy" and even stopped the class to provide my sister and I a "reiki cleanse" as in her own word she needed "to detach" from the energy. I didnt think much of it at first and respected her judgement since I thought, "she must know what she's talking about" but after reflecting more on it and allowing time and my own search, I see it as unprofessional and almost borderline paranoid. Her anxiety got projected onto mine. Even my sister felt the same. The reason I went along with it was because I didn't know what to expect, I've never had an experience like that one as I was hoping to seek a more holistic humanistic one. Its been a year so maybe she's worked through that fear of her, who knows. But this was my experience when attending a year ago. Lots of "do and don't". Weird.

It's important to know that this is not free like traditional temples. They describe it as "modern Buddhism," which means they charge $15 per class. The first time I attended, I noticed a donation box and assumed it was donation-based. On my second visit, I felt uncomfortable when I was asked after the session whether I had signed up or paid in advance. It caught me off guard, and I ended up paying out of anxiety due to the lack of clarity. My main concern is that it presents itself in a way that feels similar to traditional Buddhism (the num outfit and statues), but operates differently by charging per class. In my experience growing up around Buddhist temples, meditation was always offered freely, with donations being optional. That said, the environment and community here are positive--it's just important for others to understand that it is structured as a paid class rather than a donation-based temple setting.
