Uni and ikura bowl
Katrina V.

One of my really good friends, who now is a resident of the Philippines, took me to Izakaya Kikufuji for lunch. It was one of her favorite restaurants in Makati, and I could totally see why! Food and customer service were excellent, and as an added plus the restaurant was a convenient 10 min drive from Dusit Thani where I was staying. We arrived Izakaya Kikufuji around 12:30pm on a Thursday. The place was super busy, and there were several guests waiting to be seated. Luckily we were seated immediately since my friend made a reservation ahead of time. As we were walking through the restaurant to get to our table, I was surprised by how big the whole place was since the restaurant looked small from the foyer. It could certainly accommodate a ton of parties, and the place was packed from room to room. However, there was quick turnaround times between guests. Customer service was outstanding. It was one of the few restaurants I've been to in the Philippines so far where I felt that wait staff members gave a damn about their customers. We were frequently checked up on, and our waters were refilled without us having to flag anyone down. I thought it was cool how Izakaya Kikufuji provided complimentary Izakaya (japanese tapas). They included a spicy tuna with tempura flakes, cabbage salad in soy sauce dressing, and a mixed vegetable stir fry. They were all great, but I especially loved the spicy tuna. It was also a large serving for the 2 of us, so I had to remind myself that I had to make room for food that was still coming. We ordered a mixed tempura appetizer to share. Honestly if I had known that Izakaya Kikufuji hooked it up with the complimentary izakaya, then I wouldn't have gotten the tempura. The tempura was totally fine though. Actually the mix of tempura pleasantly surprised me as there was some type fish in addition to the traditional shrimp tempura. There was also some type of chopped onion/carrot fried tempura that was really good. I ordered the uni and ikura bowl, which was totally worth it. For the price of P670 (~$13USD), I got a whole bowl of uni (sea urchin) over white rice and topped with ikura (fish roe). For the same price in the US, I could only get 2 pieces of uni nigiri and 2 pieces of ikura nigiri in total. Most importantly, the uni tasted fresh.

The best authentic japanese food I ever ate!! Been eating here since 2018 until now it's still the best places to celebrate intimate parties like bday celebration with your fam, special one. I really LOVE their Spicy Maguro Sashimi!! The best salad ever!!! I always order another plate. And when I had no cake, I decided to have their Special Cali Sushi with mangoes on top! Absolutely the best!!!

The area at the back is now NON-SMOKING. Queue Tip / Q-Tip?: This restaurant gets crowded rather quickly during lunch & dinner, so try to reserve or arrive 15-30 minutes before opening time just to be sure. Long lines are managed with a number system similar to CDR-King. I suggest if there's no more room to wait inside, go back in every now & then because you might miss your number. They will call out your number but not with a megaphone. :) BIG Tip: For those who'd like to lessen their chances of waiting longer, don't get a number at the main entrance & walk straight to the little pathway at the right side of the restaurant. Sometimes they have a queue too, but it's mostly less people. If a table there is vacant, you can go straight to it or out of politeness, still ask if it's occupied. Lunch Tip: Best value for what you pay is during lunch because of their lunch sets that include free side dishes. The best ones are Spicy Tuna & Miso Soup. Dinner time makes everything an ala carte/single order option. First-Timer Tip: For those who want to try a little of everything at the lowest price possible, go for the Makunouchi. You'll get a good mix of meats & veggies, fried, raw, grilled, you name it! You're most likely going to enjoy the grilled fish, particularly the shake (salmon). It's good for 1-2 hungry customers. Must-Haves: - Buri (Grilled Yellowtail Fillet) - Gindara (Grilled Codfish with Teriyaki Sauce) - Gyu Kushi (Skewered Grilled Wagyu Beef Cubes) Sashimi Tip: Always be clear if your order is for, let's say, 8 pieces instead of 1 piece. In fact, apply this tip to all food items that can be served similarly. Bill Tip: (1) You can ask for it from your table or (2) You, yourself, can pay at the cash register near the exit (also the entrance) before going. If you'll do the latter, make sure to bring the slip from where you dined. Sometimes it's behind your chair or attached on the small pillar closest to you. I used to inform my server everytime I'd do Bill Tip #2, but she'd then offer to take care of it for me instead, so I'd end up waiting again. :P Service Tip: The servers are friendly so be nice to them! Tip Box is beside the cash register at the exit. Forgive the cashier if she gets moody or distracted. She punches all our bills down. Their supervisor is also accommodating & listens to your concerns. The food here is just insanely excellent; I'm happy going here over & over again!

Whenever I'm back in the Metro, either for business or for pleasure, there is no way I'll leave town without dining in Izzakaya Kikufugi. This unpretentious japanese restaurant in Little Tokyo, Makati City is one of the best places you can sample authentic japanese cuisine. We had our usual staples. 1.)The Special California Maki - 8 big and fat rolls topped with tuna sashimi and covered with a generous mound of sweet mango slices. 2.) Spicy Maguro - tuna sashimi with spicy creamy sause topped with tempura flakes 3.) Gyu Kushi - mouth watering wagyu beef cubes in sticks among the few. The food came freshly cooked in 15 mins delivered by courteous and attentive staff. The place has various seating choices or arrangement to cater to local or japanese patrons. The standard table/chair area, the bar and the exclusive room with floor table setting. So far with the number of times I've been in this place the most comfortable is the standard table and chair setting where I'm comfortably seated while enjoying my salmon sushi. There are no reservations in this place so it's best if you swing by at 5:30pm when they start serving dinner. The place has a tight following so it gets jam-packed mosts days and especially on weekends. And knowing that parking is a challenge in this area you need to come in early. Lastly this place also serves a variety of japanese saki. So enjoy!

I never fail to visit Izakaya Kikufuji in Little Tokyo everytime I am in Makati. Classic Favorites * Gyu Kushi (Wagyu Cubes) * Special California Maki * Sashimi Platter * Grilled Bacon-wrapped Asparagus It's an authentic Japanese restaurant that serves the freshest seafood. Long queue may be avoided at the back end, formerly the smoking area. Parking can be secured at Makati Cinema Square when all areas are full.

Every time I go here with Carlo and his fam bam, there is always a looong line! If you can, try to make a reservation. The other way is that you come an hour earlier before the lunch and dinner rush. But, if it is your first time, do try to go during lunch. Why? Lunch set meals! For the lunch menu, you must try the Chirashi Don, Maguro Uni Don (my fave!), the Saba Set, the Tempura Set, and the Tonkatsu Set. All lunch sets include appetizers, rice and miso soup. The grilled saba is cooked very well here. It's not fishy and very meaty. Please give it a try! Of course. their best-seller here is the Gyu Kushi! it is a stick with 4 pieces of wagyu beef cubes that literally melt in your mouth. Very juicy! It's simply seasoned with salt and pepper. One stick is Php125. If you're just one person, I suggest you order 2-3 sticks. It takes them awhile to grill and serve. Apart from the fresh fish dishes, they have excellent noodle dishes. I go for the Chasoba! It is cold buckwheat noodles served with a dipping sauce with onion chives, wasabi and a fresh quail egg. It is your choice to add the condiments to taste for the dipping sauce. I honestly put ALL of it in. I love the kick of the wasabi! The main reason why I cannot give this place a 5 Star is... their service is just not good enough. Servers don't check on you. They for get orders or forget the the item you ordered is not available. Yeah. Patience is a virtue here. But, the food makes up for it.

A view of the place

Went here with friends Friday night, and I didn't really feel like the place lived up to the all the 5-star reviews that it has received so far... First the waiters weren't able to recommend any of their sakes? And didn't hold any knowledge about what any of them tasted like, when asked. So I had to pick my own, which was a bit disappointing has I haven't gotten a first clue about sake brands.. Additionally, they forgot 3 orders, and had to be reminded twice about it. The food that we did get, was pretty good! Perhaps, I came at a bad time? Will have to return and update this review.

This is the stuff dreams are made of -- sweet strips of mango, salty fish eggs and crunchy bits of tempura batter

Whether you're dining by yourself ,with family or with friends, Kikufuji is a great pick for unpretentious and oh-so-delicious Japanese food. From the moment you drive up to the restaurant and see the diners lined up, you know you're in for a good meal. When you enter, it's hard to miss the large open kitchen where the Japanese chef holds court with his battalion of cooks, each one preparing a dish with deft fingers and quiet precision. Personally, I like to dine at the bar so I can watch the cooks work and order my favorites -- grilled saba (mackarel), the special California maki with it's heaping pile of mango slivers and fish eggs or the glorious wagyu beef skewers. Their grilled salmon and pork belly skewers are good to, seasoned with just the right amount of salt. But if you're so inclined, you can ask for a little teriyaki sauce to slather on. By the time you're down to your last bite, the whole experience is enough to make you forget going through the horror show that is Edsa/ Makati traffic. If you're dining on a weekend, make reservations in advance to avoid a long wait and consider parking in the basement parking of Makati Cinema Square.

Was just there a few minutes ago. Unfortunately, we didn't even get to taste their food because we stood there waiting to be seated for over 20 minutes, thinking the front receptionist was just busy or away; but nobody attended to us at all. The moment we sat down by the waiting area, another group came in, and this girl near the counter who was gossiping with her colleague assisted them right away. Apparently, she was just there! Obviously this girl needs to do her job properly or be taught how to do her job properly. All she was doing was gossiping around. You work in customer service, you should now that you are the fore front and face of the company. Totally disappointing. We were so hyped up to trying them out for nothing. I read some reviews on zomato about how rude and unaccomodating their staff are, and was hoping to nevertheless give Izakaya the benefit of the doubt. Went to another place instead.

Truly an authentic Japanese restaurant! I loved everything we ordered, quality was indeed top-notch, and prices were very affordable. Instead of ordering the usual kani salad, we wanted to be adventurous and chose the Wakame Salad which contained seaweed. It was really good and turned out to be so much better than expected. The Nigiri Sushi and California Maki were great as well but since these are always present in Japanese restaurants, nothing really sets them apart from others. Do not leave without ordering the Grilled Gindara in Teriyaki Sauce and the melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu Sticks -- these are highly recommended!

Shake donburi FTW

First thing's first: Sunday Lunch Donburi Specials. If you manage to get parking and a table, take your pick from the chirashi, uni, ikura, uni AND ikura, and other equally mouthwatering rice bowls at their lunch hour prices. Izakaya Kikufuji takes on an authentic Japanese bar vibe that shows in the stellar food they offer. Definitely call ahead if you don't want to be seated at the bar or the smoking area, though the Japanese customers who frequent the place don't seem to mind. Unfortunately, I once had a terrible experience of having a huge rat graze my leg while sitting at the smoking area. The servers didn't want to believe me until the rodent poked its head from out of the wooden flooring! They then left me to finish and pay for my lunch! Once the Japanese chef heard about it, though, he apologized profusely and explained in broken English that there was an ongoing exhumation process in Little Tokyo at the time. I was moved to the bar to enjoy lunch on the house. It has never happened again and I've been back many times because I can't be bothered to miss their shake don and zaru soba, which they do really well. Other patrons swear by the grilled options like salmon jaws and wagyu sticks that I always wish I had space to try on top of my favorites.

My brother also ordered several chawanmushi for us to share. My parents shared the Nigiri kaku bento. There was so much food. The one down side was the fish in my parents' bento box was a bit tough, unlike the gindara that we had. I would probably recommend the Gindara kaku bento between the 2 bento boxes. We also had this soup that came in a small teapot. I had missed jotting down the name but you drink the soup from a miniature teacup. Glad we didn't order more food because there was already lots of food! Highly recommend!

The lack of a dress code (there was a diner in shorts) and the non-festive music made it feel like a casual Tuesday rather than a special occasion. Well, I say dirt cheap now since I am already earning money on my own, with my fancy managerial title and all that. These restaurants cater mostly to students, and that usually means that the food is served in huge servings for a fraction of the cost - it's all about cost-effectiveness, as far as students are concerned, so most businesses around schools tend to drive down prices as much as they possibly can. An example of such restaurants is Ichiro, which is found in One Archer's Place, just a couple meters from DLSU's Agno Gate. I would say Ichiro would be Yabu's cheaper yet equally satisfying cousin. Though their menu is not as upscale and varied as Yabu's, Ichiro's katsu can rival the big brand's just the same. If you enjoy Yabu's interactive prelude to your meal in the form of crushing sesame seeds the mortar and the grooved pestle, you will also find it here. The katsu is thick and well-breaded with golden and crispy breadcrumbs, and the sauce base is also thick, syrupy and well-seasoned. This restaurant gives you a bang for your buck. The place is a bit hidden since it is in that awkward spot in the mezzanine, but you'll find it on your way to the washrooms, which are located far back into the building.

Upon looking at the menu, you're going to notice that Ichiro has a very comprehensive set of Katsu variations, from their regular Chicken and Pork Katsu to the hit, Cheese Roll Katsu, which is basically, well, Katsu with cheese inside. Regardless, no matter which version you order, you're going to get a satisfying meal. All have a side of delicious Miso Soup, a healthy serving of rice, and their sauce, which is sweet and also a little bit sour topped with sesame seeds. (That you get to crush yourself!) Their Katsu has a lovely golden brown exterior. It's crunchy on the first bite - and the taste keeps you going all the way until the last bite. Ichiro's definitely an awesome Japanese restaurant, at a price that's perfect for students. It makes sense that plenty of diners come here every night.
