    Outstanding authentic Japanese cuisine in Manila's Little Tokyo area. We came in for dinner during vacation to the Philippines and enjoyed fresh sashimi and wagyu sukiyaki at the bar. It was packed with Japanese nationals and the hostess was kind enough to squeeze us in without reservations. The service and food quality were Tokyo level. Highly recommend.

    Seryna is the first restaurant I've visited in Metro's "Little Tokyo". As other places there, is serves authentic japanese food. Something that attracted me about it is that Seryna is frequented by the japanese community placed in Manila. The night I've been there I could see lots of expats and also filipinos there. It seems everybody loves their sushi! Don't expect that kind of fusion cuisine. Seryna's focus is really the traditional japanese food. I started my dinner with a delicious misoshiru soup. Simple, but great. The sushi and sashimi were really fresh. Unfortunately, the ordinary salmon wasn't available and the waitress suggested the special one, from Atlantic Ocean, which was of course more expensive. Anyway, it was worth the money! Fish there is really soft and fresh. Try the salmon roll, with salmon skin and roe. Waitress told me their bestseller is the sukiyake, a thinly sliced beef with vegetables. You can choose between the US Beef and the Wagyu one (usually people's choice). Didn't try it yet, but it seemed tasty on the table just beside me. To be checked next visit!

    This is my favorite place in Little Tokyo. It's not on the main cluster and it's located in a building (not one of the cozy little houses) but the atmosphere in the restaurant is pretty cozy. I like to sit at the sushi counter - both because I like to see what's cooking and because I like to get my food faster! This place is a little on the expensive side, especially since the sushi is pretty small. But it's really good quality. I like the toro sushi here as well as the uni! YUM. From the fried items, the fried squid is so delicious. Not chewy and just the right amount of batter around it. The uni tempura is also pretty good. It's a pocket of seaweed filled with uni, battered, and deep fried. Heaven!

    You know you're in for a treat when local Japanese folks occupies 3/4 of the restaurant. Especially when their in the Sashimi Bar chatting their orders. Been craving for Japanese food lately and this one is my go-to place if I want to indulge a little. Mainly because they serve traditional quality Japanese food that will curb my cravings. I'm a big fan of Japanese Cuisine so I'm very particular with their raw menu. With Seryna however, it's possibly the best sashimi set I've tasted in Manila. Generous servings from the Chef and the fish tasted so fresh and butter-creamy. Did you know they serve Uni Don and Scallops baked in UNI Sauce?!?! It's so good, you won't regret the calories. I ordered two more of dish and got surprised with the huge servings. Though this joint is a bit pricey compared to its neighbors, ambiance and service wise, it's worth it.

    There was a time when my former boss and I would have these cravings for this specific Japanese place. After attempting - or were we merely pretending - to go through the menu, it's funny how we would always end up ordering the same thing over and over - I'd get the Sukiyaki gozen (Sukiyaki lunch set), while she would ask for the Sashimi counterpart. The set would consist of the Japanese beef stew, miso soup, a small serving of fresh salad, a bowl of gohan, some pickles, and a few pieces of grapes. The egg would be served on the side so it is up to the patron if he wants to drop it into the Sukiyaki or not. (Which I do.) It all comes neatly arranged on a polished, wooden tray with a matching glass of iced tea on the side. As can be expected from the Japanese, this meal is very well-balanced - no flavor overpowers another and the serving is satisfying. People with smaller appetites might even find it hefty. I have been here a lot of times and it's actually borderline foolish that I haven't eaten anything besides that. Besides the meal set that I seem to have an obsessive relationship with, I also like the place because the decorative wooden panels on the ceiling remind me of a ship's hull. The ambient music is soft and while it is apparent that most of the customers are carrying conversations with one another, never have I heard anyone speak louder than necessary.

    Seryna has always been one of the best Japanese restaurants in the country, known not only for its delicious food, but its dark and cozy ambience and very accommodating staff. My favorite Chirashi set (Kaisen Gozen) comes from Seryna, hands down. Their lunch set at 380PHP fits right on the budget and the sashimi they serve is always of the best kind-- fresh, juicy, and not frozen. I always order the Kaisen Gozen and I always leave with an aquarium tummy with the different kinds of sashimi that they include in the set. I really love their uni because it's so creamy compared to other Japanese restaurants I've tried. They're also very generous with their servings too. This set has two levels, the first with all your sashimi and the second level with your japanese rice, ginger, tamago, bamboo, and denbu, just to name a few. The set also comes with miso soup, salad, a side dish (depends on the day, but I've received karaage, mushrooms, and some salty dried fish before), and fruits. Additional items that receive special mention is their Sukiyaki gozen-- the beef is not tough and I love the taste of the sukiyaki soup, 5 kinds sashimi-- fresh, thick slices of different kinds of fish, and the grilled beef cubes-- aahh! so fatty and juicy! There's never a wrong time to visit Seryna to satisfy your authentic Japanese craving, except that they get filled fast, especially on weekends! I would recommend eating there for lunch as their sets are well worth every peso.

My husband and I shared the Gindara kaku bento - grilled cod fish, salad, salmon and tuna sashimi, tempura, miso soup with clams and mango ice cream. For dessert, fruits was the other option. My brother also ordered several chawanmushi for us to share. My parents shared the Nigiri kaku bento. There was so much food. The one down side was the fish in my parents' bento box was a bit tough, unlike the gindara that we had. I would probably recommend the Gindara kaku bento between the 2 bento boxes. We also had this soup that came in a small teapot. I had missed jotting down the name but you drink the soup from a miniature teacup. Glad we didn't order more food because there was already lots of food! Highly recommend!

If you're an adventurous eater looking for new Japanese dishes to try, you're going to love this place. Even if you aren't that fond of much outside the staples like sushi, yakitori, and katsu, you're still going to enjoy yourself because everything on the menu is a treat. Cheers!

The Ambience: We arrived at 4:30 PM for the 5:00 PM seating, only to find no staff at the front desk and no lounge area for early arrivals. The place was literally closed and opened on the dot, 5pm! The lack of a dress code (there was a diner in shorts) and the non-festive music made it feel like a casual Tuesday rather than a special occasion. While the varnished wood tables look nice, they lack the refinement of fine dining; condensation from drinks pooled easily on the surface. The Service: Despite the restaurant being only half-full, the wine service was sluggish there were multiple times when I had to think if the staff was expecting me to stand up and grab the bottle of wine and pour it to the glass myself, there was even a time when the staff attempted to clear my plate while my wife was still eating--a basic fine-dining faux pas. The Food: This was the biggest letdown. The crackers tasted stale, the lobster bisque lacked body, and the squid sushi was bland. Most disappointing were the mains: the fish skin was rubbery, and the Wagyu was overpowered by an overly tangy sauce. Even the desserts felt repetitive in flavor. Well, I say dirt cheap now since I am already earning money on my own, with my fancy managerial title and all that. These restaurants cater mostly to students, and that usually means that the food is served in huge servings for a fraction of the cost - it's all about cost-effectiveness, as far as students are concerned, so most businesses around schools tend to drive down prices as much as they possibly can. An example of such restaurants is Ichiro, which is found in One Archer's Place, just a couple meters from DLSU's Agno Gate. I would say Ichiro would be Yabu's cheaper yet equally satisfying cousin. Though their menu is not as upscale and varied as Yabu's, Ichiro's katsu can rival the big brand's just the same. If you enjoy Yabu's interactive prelude to your meal in the form of crushing sesame seeds the mortar and the grooved pestle, you will also find it here. The katsu is thick and well-breaded with golden and crispy breadcrumbs, and the sauce base is also thick, syrupy and well-seasoned. This restaurant gives you a bang for your buck. The place is a bit hidden since it is in that awkward spot in the mezzanine, but you'll find it on your way to the washrooms, which are located far back into the building.

Really, it's hard to get Katsu that's really damn good. Most Katsu I get from a lot of places is either really bland, kind of soggy, or just plain undercooked. Ichiro's Katsu looks and feels like a premium, well-cooked Katsu from the get go. Upon looking at the menu, you're going to notice that Ichiro has a very comprehensive set of Katsu variations, from their regular Chicken and Pork Katsu to the hit, Cheese Roll Katsu, which is basically, well, Katsu with cheese inside. Regardless, no matter which version you order, you're going to get a satisfying meal. All have a side of delicious Miso Soup, a healthy serving of rice, and their sauce, which is sweet and also a little bit sour topped with sesame seeds. (That you get to crush yourself!) Their Katsu has a lovely golden brown exterior. It's crunchy on the first bite - and the taste keeps you going all the way until the last bite. Ichiro's definitely an awesome Japanese restaurant, at a price that's perfect for students. It makes sense that plenty of diners come here every night.
